Johnny Depp was once one of Hollywood's biggest and most versatile stars, appearing in both blockbusters and true-crime dramas. The American actor gained global superstardom for portraying the eccentric Captain Jack Sparrow in five Pirates of the Caribbean movies from 2006 to 2017, earning an Academy Award nomination for the first film, The Curse of the Black Pearl. In the following years, Depp earned additional nominations for Finding Neverland and Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
Over his career, Depp has also appeared in an array of crime dramas, including 2001's Blow, playing a real American cocaine kingpin, George Jung, who was connected to Pablo Escobar. In 2009, Depp starred in Michael Mann's Public Enemies as the notorious bank robber John Dillinger, chronicling his final years. In 2015's Black Mass, Depp played American mobster Whitey Bulger. When looking at Johnny Depp’s filmography, one can easily recognize that he looks like an actor who the Academy would snub multiple times. Talented, versatile, and with no desire to win the coveted trophy, Depp’s incredible performances are a testament to the fact that being the people’s champion is much more valuable than any other award.
Still, the legendary actor has been nominated thrice for the award. His most popular role, Captain Jack Sparrow, got a nod in his first appearance. However, all three nominations were with incredibly talented artists as his fellow nominees, and winning was tough. Sean Penn, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Clint Eastwood were just some of his competitors.

The Academy Awards are around the corner and several fumbles, snubs, and outrages are expected. The Oscars are known for shocking moments and snubs, with controversial nominations already being talked about and voters regretting previous decisions. However, one fumble that the Academy must not do is to ignore Johnny Depp.
The Pirates of the Caribbean star has been nominated thrice in his career but has never won the coveted trophy. He has been one of the most versatile actors in the business and the Academy has barely recognized his talents. His controversy with ex-wife Amber Heard may make him an industry or awards pariah but that would be a huge mistake.

The Oscars have a reputation for snubbing deserving actors and technicians many times.

The documentary Finding Neverland premiered in two parts on HBO in 2019. Across four hours, former child performers Wade Robson and James Safechuck provided grueling descriptions of being allegedly groomed and sexually abused by Michael Jackson as children. The release sparked a number of questions, among them being the status of Jackson’s legacy. On March 18, director Dan Reed will return with the follow-up documentary Leaving Neverland 2: Surviving Michael Jackson that interrogates a similar question, but for Robson and Safechuck as they weathered public response to their allegations.

If Johnny Depp Doesn’t Return as Jack Sparrow, His Fans Still Have 5 New Projects of His to Wait For
Of all the projects Johnny Depp has starred in to date, his most remarkable role has unarguably been that of Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean universe. However, his chances of returning to the franchise are as bleak as ever after all the Disney abandoning him drama that ensued when he was caught in that messy divorce with his ex-wife Amber Heard.

Nonetheless, while his return to the screens through Pirates of the Caribbean 6 seems more unlikely than otherwise, his fans are still as excited for him as ever. This is because the 61-year-old actor already has five other projects in line through which he would be gracing his presence on the big screens, not to mention those untitled ones he is all set to direct!

A stage production of Neil Gaiman's 2002 children's novel Coraline has been canceled, Variety reports. A statement from the production partners behind the scrapped musical cited the recent allegations of sexual misconduct brought against the author. In the joint statement from Leeds Playhouse, Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh, Birmingham Rep, and Home Manchester, the organizations stated, "We have decided our production of Coraline – A Musical will not proceed."

The Academy Awards committee recently announced their 2025 nominations for the Best Actor category. And boy oh boy, is it going to be cut-throat with the likes of Ralph Fiennes and Timothée Chalamet competing against each other. But talk of fierce competition and we’re often reminded of the 77th Academy Awards, where Jamie Foxx was pitted against veterans like Leonardo DiCaprio, Clint Eastwood, and Johnny Depp.

Yet, the actor of color who was nominated for two categories—Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, ended up emerging victorious in the stiff competition. Despite losing the supporting actor category (which seemed rather easy to win) Jamie Foxx turned the tables and took home the coveted award for Best Actor, leaving DiCaprio, Depp, and Eastwood in the dirt.

Lily-Rose Depp’s Oscar snub for her brilliant performance in Nosferatu has enraged some fans. However, these fans seem to forget that her father Johnny Depp waited for two decades before he could get his first Academy nomination. Depp’s first of three nominations came in 2004 for his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the first Pirates of the Caribbean film.

Certainly this could have been avoided? According to a bombshell report in Puck, Lionsgate‘s upcoming Michael Jackson biopic “Michael” faces massive rewrites and reshoots because of a deal the Jackson estate made years ago with the family of one of the performer’s child molestation accusers. Lionsgate did not return calls seeking comment.
In November 2024, Lionsgate announced that “Michael,” directed by Antoine Fuqua, would be delayed from a April 2025 release to October 3, 2025. According to Puck, the problem lay with an agreement between Jackson’s legal team and the family of Jordan Chandler, the then-13-year-old who accused Jackson of molestation in 1993.
That deal, made years before the movie began development, specifically excludes the Chandler family from any movies about Jackson’s life. However, the “Michael” script began and ended in 1993 with the Chandler accusations, with a third act that hinges on the legal drama surrounding the Chandlers’ eventual $20 million settlement.

Set in wartime France, White Bird is the moving tale of Sara, a young girl hiding from Nazi occupiers, and Julian, the classmate who protects her. Adapted from R.J. Palacio’s acclaimed graphic novel, director Marc Forster crafts a story that shines light on humanity’s resilience in even our darkest of times.
Much like Palacio’s earlier work Wonder, which explored a boy learning to accept himself despite bullying, White Bird finds the power in treating others with compassion. This time the setting is German-occupied Alsace in 1942, where Jewish teenager Sara must go into hiding after Nazis raid her town. When her friend Julian offers shelter in his family’s barn, an unlikely bond forms that helps Sara and Julian endure the months-long ordeal.

There is a particular scene in White Bird that made me gasp out loud. The scene was not violent; however, watching a teacher insist on chaperoning the Jewish children pulled from her class because they are her responsibility felt like the equivalent of me yelling out during a horror film, “Don’t go in there!”
You cannot argue against how effective White Bird is in terms of engagement. Watching teachers, priests, and neighbors risk, and at times outright sacrifice, themselves to protect Jewish children is compelling, if not heartbreaking. Disturbingly, this has practically become a Hollywood trope.
There are several scenes like the one I described above. Saviors appear on the screen and vanish from sight, never to be seen again. That’s what makes Marc Forster’s White Bird haunting at times—kindness is an enduring theme, but it comes at the cost of one’s life.

Kate Winslet has been a driving force in Hollywood for over three decades, but the 48-year-old Oscar winner is only now entering a phase in her career where she is being brave according to some people. This includes speaking out about comments made by crew members about her body during a topless scene in her new movie Lee. However, Winslet has previously said the whole idea of being called brave because of this is nothing more than another sign of how gender plays a huge part in how actors are viewed in the industry.

Black Mass features some cast members giving fantastic but incredibly eerie performances. The Whitey Bulger biography is not Johnny Depp's most talked-about role, but it is perhaps one of his most chilling. The actor is better known for parts like Willy Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland, or Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean, which easily overtake Black Mass in popularity, but his part is nonetheless worth looking at.
Whitey Bulger was an Irish-American mobster in South Boston who became one of the most notorious criminals in his area's history. World War Z had the potential to kick off a new zombie movie franchise but never materialized. Despite being a commercial hit, World War Z faced numerous obstacles in producing a sequel. A World War Z remake could provide a fresh opportunity to explore the original novel's storyline.

One of the most enigmatic actors out there, Johnny Depp had a somewhat modest start as a regular on the TV series “21 Jump Street,” Depp has put together a remarkably diverse collection of film roles, most of which have one thing in common — he is drawn to playing outcasts or people who are on the edges of society who go their own way — and going his own way is certainly something that’s been a hallmark of this much-awarded actor’s career.
In Depp’s almost four-decade (beginning with 1984’s “A Nightmare on Elm Street”), he has earned a remarkable 10 Golden Globe Award nominations, winning the Best Actor prize for the 2007 musical “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.” That film also garnered Depp his third Academy Award nomination (along with 2003’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” and 2004’s “Finding Neverland”). Jan A.P. Kaczmarek, the Polish composer who won a Oscar for his score of the 2004 film Finding Neverland, died today in Krakow following a years-long battle with Multiple System Atrophy. He was 71.
His death was announced bythe Polish Music Foundation.
A prolific composer for film and television, Kaczmarek’s credits beginning in the 1980s and building momentum in the 1990s and 2000s. Among the titles: Total Eclipse, Washington Square, Aimee and Jaguar, Unfaithful, Soldier’s Girl, The Visitor, City Island, Get Low and Paul, Apostle of Christ.
But it was his score for Finding Neverland that he’ll perhaps be most remembered for. Nominated for both BAFTA and Golden Globe awards, the score for Marc Forster’s J.M. Barrie 2004 biopic won the Oscar for Best Original Score the following year. The win made Kaczmarek an international presence in cinema.

Polish composer Jan A.P. Kaczmarek, who won a 2004 Oscar for “Finding Neverland,” died Tuesday in Krakow, the Polish Music Foundation announced. He was 71 and had suffered from Multiple System Atrophy (Msa) in recent years.
Also among Kaczmarek’s 50-plus film and television scores, mostly from the 1990s and 2000s, were “Unfaithful,” “Bliss,” “Aimee and Jaguar,” “The Visitor” and “Get Low.” He also scored the lavish four-part French-Italian miniseries of “War and Peace” in 2007.
Kaczmarek had one of the most unusual backgrounds of any film composer of his time. Born in Konin in 1953, he was educated as a lawyer. But he abandoned a planned career as a diplomat to compose music for an experimental theater company, headed by avant-garde theater director Jerzy Grotowski, in Poznan during the 1970s.
He formed his own ensemble, the Orchestra of the Eighth Day, which toured Europe in the late 1970s and early 1980s, releasing an LP,...

Robert Downey Jr. has been receiving congratulations for winning his first Oscar at the 96th Academy Award. His long-time friend and fellow actor Johnny Depp also extended his congratulatory remarks to the Oppenheimer star. But a slightly awkward moment occurred after he shared a photoshopped picture with Downey Jr. The Pirates of the Caribbean star, however, promptly rectified the error and joined in celebrating Downey Jr.’s triumph at the 2024 Oscars.

The Oscar for Best Original Score has been awarded to some of the most memorable pieces of film music of all time, from “Star Wars” to “La La Land.” Many awards are considered precursors to the Oscars, so you would think the Grammy for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media would be pretty accurate, right? After all, there’s surely overlap between the Recording Academy and the music branch of the motion picture academy. And musicians would naturally be more aligned with what other musicians think than with groups of journalists like the Golden Globes Association or Critics Choice Association.
The two awards bodies have overlapped a lot over the years, but they are not afraid to differ. Since 2000 Oscar-winning scores for films like “Babel,” “The Artist,” “Life of Pi” and “The Hateful Eight” have lost the Grammy, sometimes to scores they beat at the Oscars. Other Oscar champs like “Frida,...

Even before convicted s*x offender and disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein’s criminal, predatory behavior sparked the global phenomenon of the #MeToo movement in 2017 that questioned and examined the ubiquity of harassment and assault that women from all walks of life, unfortunately, undergo, the Miramax co-founder earned a reputation of notoriety for being ‘exasperating’ and just overall difficult.

Paul Giamatti turned the tables on Leonardo DiCaprio when Oscar nominations were announced, with Giamatti nominated for Best Actor for “The Holdovers” while DiCaprio was snubbed for “Killers of the Flower Moon.” But 19 years ago it was the other way around.
SEETop 20 Oscar snubs of performers: Margot Robbie, Leonardo DiCaprio, Willem Dafoe …
In 2004 the Oscar lineup for Best Actor consisted of Don Cheadle (“Hotel Rwanda”), Johnny Depp (“Finding Neverland”), DiCaprio (“The Aviator”), Clint Eastwood (“Million Dollar Baby”), and the eventual winner Jamie Foxx (“Ray”). Someone who was notably absent that year was Giamatti for “Sideways.”
Prior to the nominations announcement DiCaprio was recognized at every major precursor for his performance as Howard Hughes, a real-life filmmaker, pilot and businessman, in Martin Scorsese‘s “The Aviator.” Among those plaudits, he won the Golden Globe for Best Film Drama Actor. The movie itself received 13 Oscar noms overall, including DiCaprio’s Best Actor bid.

Paul Giamatti turned in one of the best performances of 2004 in Alexander Payne‘s “Sideways.” He played Miles, a depressed writer who takes a trip to Santa Barbara County to celebrate his friend’s (Thomas Haden Church) engagement. He reap bids at the Critics Choice, SAG and Golden Globes awards. It was shock when he was snubbed at the Oscars in favor of eventual winner Jamie Foxx (“Ray”) plus Don Cheadle (“Hotel Rwanda”), Johnny Depp (“Finding Neverland”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Aviator”), and Clint Eastwood (“Million Dollar Baby”).
The academy can finally rectify that oversight as Giamatti and Payne have reunited for “The Holdovers,” which Focus Features is releasing on Oct. 27. Giamatti is a curmudgeon of a teacher forced to stay behind and look after students staying at his school throughout the holiday period. Dominic Sessa and Da’Vine Joy Randolph are great in supporting roles but it’s Giamatti who is the star of the picture.

A California appeals court restored lawsuits from the two men who claim Michael Jackson sexually abused them for years when they were young boys. A new California law that increased the scope of sexual abuse cases temporarily allowed the court to revive the lawsuits.
The state’s 2nd District Court of Appeal ruled that Wade Robson and James Safechuck‘s lawsuits should not have been dismissed by a lower court. The three-judge panel also stated that Robson and Safechcuk had valid accusations against two Jackson-owned companies, which both had a responsibility to protect them.
This is the second time the lawsuits have been revived after being dismissed. Robson and Safechuck’s stories became widely known to the public following the release of the 2019 HBO documentary, Leaving Neverland.

Hugh Jackman and Kate Winslet. In the 2000s, Hollywood was convinced the duo would be part of the next generation of great movie stars. In a way, movie studios were both dead-on and also a bit off. Both turned out to have more fickle fanbases than vintage stars of old, who could headline any movie and get some degree of success. By contrast, Jackman’s often struggled to find box office success for features that aren’t musicals or X-Men titles. Meanwhile, in the 2000s, Kate Winslet only appeared in two live-action films (The Holiday and Finding Neverland) that cracked $50 million domestically. That's not say to these actors were total wipeouts or anything like that, especially since many of the films they headlined in that decade have endured as classics.

In Hans Christian Andersen's original tale of "The Little Mermaid," first published in 1837, the titular mermaid longs to swim to the surface and explore the world of humans after falling in love with a human man. She visits a sea witch who has a potion that can give her legs in exchange for her voice; she will become human but won't be able to speak. In Andersen's world, mermaids don't have souls and, when they die, transform into sea foam rather than ascending into heaven.
In order to survive, the little mermaid will have to marry a human man before a certain amount of time elapses. It seems that the mermaid will not be successful in wooing the prince and is destined to become sea foam. At the last minute, the mermaid's sisters rally, giving their hair to the sea witch in exchange for a magical dagger. If...

What did the reviews of A Man Called Otto say about the dark comedy starring Tom Hanks? The movie's title character is a lovable curmudgeon who is left feeling pessimistic and suicidal following the death of his wife. As he plots to take his own life, Otto’s worldview is turned around when a young family moves into his neighborhood. A Man Called Otto is a movie adaptation of Fredrik Backman’s bestselling 2012 novel A Man Called Ove and an English-language remake of the 2015 Swedish film version with the same title as the book.

The success of Disney’s live action remake strategy will reportedly continue courtesy of The Little Mermaid, which is currently tracking to make a splash at the box office during its opening weekend. Set for release over Memorial Day weekend, the latest live action adaptation of a Disney animated classic is projected to rake in $100 million from 4,300 North American theaters across its first three days of release, followed by another $120-125 million come Monday (according to Variety).
This would make The Little Mermaid one of the most successful live action remakes, with the likes of The Lion King bringing in $191 million over its debut weekend, Aladdin garnering $91 million, and Beauty and the Beast launching with $174 million. All three of these movies then went on to gross over $1 billion worldwide, and thus suggesting that The Little Mermaid could well do the same.

The Little Mermaid is the latest live-action remake of a Disney animated classic. This new version is directed by Rob Marshall, whose credits include the Academy Award-winning Chicago and recently Disney's Mary Poppins Returns, with a script by David Magee, who is a two-time Oscar-nominated screenwriter for Finding Neverland and Life of Pi. With music by original songwriter Alan Menkin and popular musician Lin-Manuel Miranda, the 2023 Little Mermaid sticks rather closely to the Disney classic. The goal here is obviously to recapture the original's magic, as the creative team seems to have a genuine love for it, leaving this remake as a relatively unambitious but still entertaining movie.

Thanks to his legal battle with his ex-wife Amber Heard, it has been about three years since Johnny Depp has been part of any cinema projects. Now he is back and starring in a significant role in the French biographical drama film Jeanne du Barry. He will play the male lead, King Louis Xv (former king of France), and star alongside Maiwenn. With his comeback to his acting career, fans were hoping (albeit expecting) for him to portray Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean again. There could still be a chance for that in the future.
For right now, let’s put our focus on what is bringing Depp back onto the big screen. Jeanne du Barry is about a young woman named Jeanne Vaubernier, a working-class woman who uses her intelligence to climb the social ladder. She hungers for culture and pleasure, and as she continues to rise,...
