Hollywood Flashback: Anthony Bourdain’s ‘Parts Unknown’ Won Emmys for Raw Truth
Image
This year, the Emmy nominees for outstanding hosted nonfiction series include Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy (2021 and 2022’s winner) and Taste the Nation With Padma Lakshmi. It’s fair to say these food travelogues owe their entrée into awards contention to Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, which dominated the category in the 2010s and brought credibility to food programming in a field that had previously overlooked it.

CNN’s Parts Unknown, which won 12 Primetime Emmys over 12 seasons — including six for outstanding informational series (as the category was known from 2013 to 2019) — was Bourdain’s fourth series following A Cook’s Tour and Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations on the Travel Channel, and Food Network’s The Layover. All were travel shows presented through the prism of food, but in Parts Unknown, Bourdain — an executive chef at New York’s Brasserie Les Halles who rose to fame for his tell-all memoir Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in...

Dish’s Sling TV Rebrands Free-Streaming Service as ‘Freestream’
Image
Sling TV, the internet-streaming division of Dish Network, is doubling down on free, ad-supported streaming television (Fast) and free, ad-supported VOD — looking to beef up its offering for consumers who balk at paying a monthly subscription fee.

The redubbed Sling Freestream is launching with 210 free channels and 41,000-plus on-demand titles. It’s a rebranding — and expansion— of Sling Free, which has been its free, live TV streaming service with some 150 channels and AVOD selections. In addition, Sling Freestream users can subscribe to more than 50 standalone streaming services, including AMC+, Discovery+, MGM+ and Paramount’s Showtime.

With Freestream, Sling is trying to lower the barrier to entry even further, by eliminating the requirement that users create an account to be able to start streaming free content. And by the end of this spring, Sling Freestream is on track to offer more than 400 channels, said Gary Schanman, group president of Sling TV.

On-Air Film Review: ‘Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain’
Image
Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm on July 15th, 2021, reviewing the new documentary “Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain” in theaters beginning July 16th.

Rating: 5.0/5.0

The fans of chef-turned-food-traveler Anthony Bourdain are many. The author of “Kitchen Confidential” and “A Cook’s Tour,” in addition to the TV host of “Parts Unknown,” had a large and fanatic audience. This film follows his career, from marginal restaurant chef to mega superstar foodie and globe trotter. And as that fame grew, so did his anxiety about purpose, which fueled his suicide in 2018.

“Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain” opened in theaters July 16th. Featuring Anthony Bourdain. Directed by Morgan Neville. Rated “R”

Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain Review: A Heartbreaking Remembrance of A Great Adventurer
Image
Anthony Bourdain is remembered fondly in a heartbreaking retrospective of a great adventurer. Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain takes an intimate look at a complex individual. Award-winning documentarian Morgan Neville explores his life from meteoric stardom to shocking 2018 suicide in provincial France. Bourdain's friends, colleagues, production team, and second wife, Ottavia Busia, speak frankly about their tragic loss. But it is Bourdain's own haunting words that best illuminates his hopes, dreams, and struggles. He experienced the world on a grand scale. It was not enough to silence his personal misgivings.

Roadrunner begins in 1999 with Anthony Bourdain at forty-three as the executive chef of the French Brasserie Les Halles in New York City. A recovering cocaine and heroin addict that started in the kitchen as a dishwasher, Bourdain was perennially in financial distress. Philippe Lajaunie, the owner of Les Halles, comments how Bourdain always had difficulties paying bills. But he...

‘Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain’ Review: The Insatiable Life and Enigmatic Death of a Foodie Superstar
Image
Why did he do it? That’s the question that anyone who’s ever been touched by the hungry, life-force spirit of Anthony Bourdain will have at the top of his or her head going into “Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain.” Directed by the award-winning Morgan Neville, the documentary, which premiered tonight at the Tribeca Festival, is an intimate and fascinating portrait of the beloved celebrity chef and television globe-trotter. It is also, inevitably, a spiritual investigation into why his life ended. On June 8, 2018, Bourdain hung himself in his hotel room. Three years later, it’s still shocking to think that his name could be included in the same sentence with the word “suicide.”

We all know that suicide, too often, is a cruel mystery, that it has a way of mocking our need for “why.” (Bourdain was a brilliant writer who left no note.) We also know that...

Anthony Bourdain Documentary ‘Roadrunner’ Hitting Theaters This Summer
Image
Anthony Bourdain, the globe-trotting chef and television personality, will be the subject of a new documentary. From Focus Features, “Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain” is coming to theaters on July 16.

Directed by Morgan Neville, the documentary will explore the life of the late Bourdain, who died by suicide in 2018 at the age of 61. The culinary expert rose to national prominence with his 2000 book “Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly,” a stark, thrilling peak behind the curtain of the restaurant industry. After his literary success, he hosted several traveling series revolving around food, including “A Cook’s Tour” on the Food Network and “No Reservations” on the Travel Channel. He later became a fixture on CNN for his travel show “Parts Unknown.” His shows were hailed for spotlighting not just the cuisine in lesser-known parts of the world, but their cultures as well.

Following its release in theaters, “Roadrunner” will...

How Anthony Bourdain Evolved From Brash, Boys' Club Chef to Passionate #MeToo Supporter
Anthony Bourdain
Anthony Bourdain was nothing if not self-aware. Painfully so, at times. The journeyman cook turned executive chef turned best-selling author and TV's preeminent culinary ambassador was known—and often revered—for his unflinching honesty and his way with the human microscope, whether it was turned up on the restaurant industry or, more often than not, cranked to 1,000x on himself. Devotees of his expeditions chronicled on Food Network's A Cook's Tour, Travel Channel's The Layover and Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations and then on CNN's Parts Unknown—as well as his one-on-one sit-downs on PBS' Mind of a Chef—knew that Bourdain...

Chatting With Anthony Bourdain
Anthony Bourdain
Love him or hate him, Anthony Bourdain is the baddest food (and travel) dude on the block. After wrapping up the ninth season of "No Reservations" on the Travel Channel, Bourdain migrated to CNN where he now hosts "Parts Unknown," which will "examine cultures from around the world through their food and dining and travel rituals." In the premiere episode, Bourdain headed to Myanmar where he sought to uncover what, exactly, Burmese food is, and how food culture evolved through the country's conflict.

It's no secret that, especially when traveling through Asia, Bourdain is an outspoken advocate for the virtues of chowing down on street food. So, it comes as no surprise that in addition to the new show, he's pulling double duty as an ambassador for and speaker at the inaugural World Street Food Congress beginning May 31. We caught up with Bourdain to learn all about this new venture,...
