In an industry where franchising is the name of the game, there's money to be had in branching off from a popular main series with a spin-off show. With 12 seasons and 279 episodes under its belt, it was all but inevitable that "The Big Bang Theory" would secure a spin-off of its own, but comedy can be especially tricky. Other long-running shows had spin-offs like "Joey" or "That '80s Show" that barely mustered enough energy to last a season or two. But on the other end of that, "Frasier" is just as vital to "Cheers" as "The Jeffersons" is to "All in the Family" (possibly even more so).
Outside of the central group of Sheldon (Jim Parsons), Leonard (Johnny Galecki), Raj (Kunal Nayyar), Penny (Kaley Cuoco), Howard (Simon Helberg), Bernadette (Melissa Rauch), and Amy (Mayim Bialik), the remaining side characters on "The Big Bang Theory" largely don't have any kind of...

If you’re a massive It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia fan in 2025, chances are, you weren’t here 20 years ago when the budget was $200, Mac was into women and Frank was still far off-screen with his whoo-ur wife.
The humble origins of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia are the stuff of TV legend. In the early 2000s, Rob McElhenney, frustrated with the constant auditioning and regular rejection that typifies an up-and-coming actor’s life in Hollywood, convinced Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton to shoot a short film about a bunch of a-holes living in his hometown of Philadelphia. Using a camcorder purchased with the proceeds from Glenn Howerton’s short-lived starring role on That ‘80s Show, the three friends filmed a rough cut of what would eventually become the Season One episode “Charlie Has Cancer” and sent it to as many agents and networks as they knew, eventually getting a...

Savages, idiots and jerk-offs will say that Glenn Howerton’s acting talents peak with one-note performances, but true believers in the Golden God know that he hasn’t even begun to peak.
As non-idiotic, non-jerk-off It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia fans always love to bring up, the actor who plays the divine Dennis Reynolds on the longest running live-action sitcom in American history is a much more well-rounded performer and person than the actual characters on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Before Howerton helped his friend and roommate Rob McElhenney out by appearing in a shoestring budget pilot (one that Howerton himself funded), Howerton graduated from the competitive and prestigious Juilliard School, he became fluent in Mandarin, Korean, French and Spanish and he starred in the most ill-conceived sequel sitcom in Fox history, the oft-mocked That ‘80s Show.

As each year comes to an end, entertainment outlets remind us of all the beloved celebrities who left us over the past 12 months. There’s no need to get that depressing, but why not pour one out for the comedy television we lost in 2024?
Whether it was due to cancelation, lost networks or creator fatigue, here are six shows that comedy fans were mourning this year…
1 Curb Your Enthusiasm
How did a show that premiered in 1999 give us only 12 seasons? Larry David’s comedy ode to himself finally concluded in 2024, devising an ending that essentially apologized for the botch job on that Seinfeld finale all those years ago.
The show has gone dark before (David and the show disappeared for six years after Season 8), only to return. But he insists that Curb Your Enthusiasm is finally done, especially because HBO did very little groveling about another encore. “I’m very susceptible to a beg,...

The former NBC sitcom A.P. Bio has a robust cast full of hilarious main and supporting characters. Mike O'Brien of Saturday Night Live acclaim created the original sitcom, which first premiered on February 1, 2018. The show is centered around professor turned high-school teacher Jack Griffin, who is played by Glenn Howerton of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. A.P. Bio follows Jack as he transitions from being a philosophy professor at Harvard University to an A.P. Biology teacher at his hometown high school after falling from grace due to a YouTube video.
A.P. Bio ran for two seasons on NBC before moving to Peacock for its final two seasons. The series was canceled twice even though it maintained an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 88%, with its second and third seasons earning perfect 100% critic scores. Despite the positive reviews of A.P. Bio, there was not enough consistent viewership for the series to continue past four seasons.

Despite being the It's Always Sunny star and producer with the Emmys, the personal production company and the high-profile bromance with Deadpool, Rob McElhenney isn’t going to disagree with anyone who thinks that his co-conspirators Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton are the top talents of the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia team.
And here we thought no one needed a wild card.
When McElhenney, Day and Howerton first shot the pilot for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, they budgeted $100 for the entire project and used a digital camera that Howerton had bought with the money he made starring in the universally panned and short-lived That ‘70s Show spin-off That ‘80s Show. At the time, McElhenney envisioned the project as a way for the three friends to secure steady acting gigs without attending endless, soul-crushing auditions, and it’s doubtful that any of them expected the potential show about...

Believe it or not, Fight Milk wasn’t the first not-exactly-milky drink that Ronald “Mac” Donald ever endorsed.
Before Rob McElhenney came up with the idea of shooting a shoestring-budget pilot for a sitcom about the biggest a-holes in Pennsylvania, he was a struggling actor in L.A. waiting tables in between acting gigs. The slightly embarrassing before-they-were-famous careers of McElhenney’s co-stars are already an integral part of the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia lore — Glenn Howerton starred in the hated failure of a sitcom That ‘80s Show before becoming Dennis Reynolds, and Charlie Day passed on an almost-as-bad show to work as an illiterate janitor. But McElhenney’s list of credits pre-2005 is, comparatively, not quite as notable or mockable as those of his collaborators.
However, there is one particularly fascinating and thankfully surviving clip from McElhenney’s acting career pre-Sunny that even includes cameos from a couple of his future co-stars.

Dennis Reynolds is a five-star man, but his biggest pre-It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia project is bad enough to make someone want to grab a shoe and beat his testicle.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia fans have long mythologized the humble beginnings of the longest running live-action sitcom in American history. Famously, Rob McElhenney shot the pilot for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia on a $100 budget after convincing his friends Glenn Howerton and Charlie Day that making their own TV show would be a better way to get acting work than attending endless auditions while waiting tables in L.A.
However, a couple years before McElhenney, Day and Howerton shot to sitcom superstardom on Always Sunny, Howerton’s first attempt at becoming a bona fide TV comedy leading man came on the short-lived spin-off series of That '70s Show, titled That ‘80s Show, in which he starred as a...

That '90s Show succeeds without Og characters by focusing on the teenage daughter of Eric and Donna from the original series, and new friendships. Season 2 has a 100% Rt Score, developing its own style and humor, and not relying on cameos from the original cast. The show connects to the original through Red and Kitty Forman, providing a balance between nostalgia and new stories.
Reboots always face a struggle as they attempt to revive a series that has, by definition, been dead for a while, but That '90s Show is succeeding despite the lack of Og characters. The teen drama genre is a classic staple of the TV industry. With countless fans of the genre naming shows like One Tree Hill, Gossip Girl, The O.C., Glee, or Pretty Little Liars as their favorites, many have argued that the genre died in the mid-2010s, with no modern teen dramas living up to that standard.
However, with the rise of streaming services, many teen dramas have been released in the past five years, many of which still running today. Some of these shows stand out as especially great additions to the genre, with a greater emphasis on groundbreaking storytelling, racial diversity, and LGBTQ+ representation than similar series of earlier years.

TV show reboots can be successful even without a major character returning, as seen in "That '90s Show" and "Fuller House." Sometimes a character's absence is beyond the show's control, but it doesn't stop the reboot from establishing its own popularity. Reboots can refresh the show, tidy up plot holes, and introduce new storylines, even without the presence of certain characters.
TV show reboots generally do well when its original cast returns in its entirety, but there are also some shows that were successful even though a major character didn't return. A show can be rebooted for many reasons, including a change in characters or storylines, the commercial desire for nostalgia, or its cast going through a sudden career boost. However, there are times when a TV show is unable to return to screens exactly the same way as it used to be.

The hilarious and adored period sitcom That '70s Show introduced audiences everywhere to the lovable stoner misfits of Point Place, Wisconsin. The series follows a group of six teenagers living in the grooviest decade of all as they deal with adolescence, romance, and overbearing parents while navigating life’s ups and downs. The sitcom was notorious for its depiction of “the circle,” a recurring scene that illustrated the gang’s use of marijuana in Eric Forman’s basement, but without actually ever showing cannabis paraphernalia. That '70s Show addressed many social issues of the time period, such as generational conflict, sexual attitudes, and both fashion and entertainment trends. The program helped launch the careers of many of its talented leads, as the cast members went on to star in an array of hit television shows and films.

Spinoffs of successful shows often fail to live up to the original series, even if they last for years. Introducing new characters in a spinoff can be a challenging task to keep fans interested. Many poorly received spinoffs, such as Joey and Once Upon A Time In Wonderland, should never have happened in the first place.
It's not uncommon for successful shows to be followed up by bad spinoffs that should never have happened, failing to live up to the initial series. While networks assume fans will follow the show and its characters into a new adaptation, this isn't always the case. Even on the occasion that a spinoff does go on for years, a lot of the time, it still isn't as good as the original series was.

The world of television is full of successful spinoffs of popular shows, like Frasier, Better Call Saul, and NCIS. However, for every spinoff that lived up to the original series, there are countless more that ruined the legacy that their predecessors established.
Some spinoffs start off weak but eventually find their footing in later seasons, while a few poorly-received spinoffs never get there and are canceled by the networks. Spinoffs like Joey, That '80s Show, and Blade: The Series disappointed viewers, who were glad they got canceled.

Former That '70s Show star, Danny Masterson, is facing up to 30 years in prison. Some speculate that he always gave them a bad vibe, and his role on That '70s Show supports that narrative. It's hard to say if he was as obviously creepy in the show watching it the first time, but in light of his current situation, his character makes your skin crawl. Just like in real life, his character on That '70s Show, Hyde, was a creep.

From the Gang to familiar supporting players to all-new guest stars, the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 16 cast is full of great actors. From 1998 to 2006, Fox's hit series That '70s Show made a major impact on viewers of all ages. Reliving the vibes of the 1970s in the fictional town of Point Place, Wisconsin, the series followed six teenage friends who spent their free time hanging out in main character Eric Forman's basement. Though the '70s have often been a point of parody on account of their strange place between the groovy '60s and the materialistic '80s, something about That '70s Show inspired a sense of realism and nostalgia in viewers who both experienced the time period or heard all about it from their parents.
The series was so popular it inspired a British remake called Days Like These, as well as Fox's That '80s show. While neither of those shows did nearly as well as the original, Netflix's 2023 reprisal, That '90s Show, was a hit with viewers.

That '80s Show is the failed spin-off of That '70s Show. Set in 1984, the series follows a group of 20-something adults living in San Diego, and was canceled after only 13 episodes due to very poor ratings and failing to gain a large audience on Fox. That '90s Show has used its nostalgia factor in a way other reboots have not, resulting in a delightful sequel to That '70s Show. It seems as if the series learned from other recent reboots that have failed to draw audiences back in after decades of its parent series being off the air. These flops made many cautiously optimistic about returning to the Forman residence since it could potentially taint That '70s Show's reputation. However, That '90s Show came ready with an excellent recipe for a successful reboot, all the way from how it featured its returning characters to the respect it shows the nostalgic '90s.
The sequel to That '90s Show picks up in 1995, about 16 years after the conclusion of That '70s Show. Audiences were immediately welcomed back into Kitty Forman's kitchen and greeted by familiar faces. However, it wasn't long before the show began to feel entirely new.

When the sad news of Burt Bacharach’s death came down Thursday morning, your first memories of the songwriting genius likely depended on your age. If you grew up in the Sixties, you probably remember the hits he wrote with Hal David for artists like Gene Pitney, Dionne Warwick, and B.J. Thomas. Children of the Eighties are likely more familiar with Christoper Cross’ “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do),” Neil Diamond’s “Heartlight,” and the Dionne Warwick charity single “That’s What Friends Are For.”

Topher Grace, who shot to fame playing Eric Forman in the popular sitcom That ‘70s Show, has jokingly teased another spinoff to come. While That ‘70s Show wrapped up after eight seasons in 2006, Grace later returned to reprise his role in the first episode of the new spinoff series That ‘90s Show. Set 15 years after the events of the original series, That ‘90s Show follows Eric Forman's and Donna Pinciotti’s teenage daughter Leia Forman (Callie Haverda) as she spends the summer of 1995 with her grandparents, Red (Kurtwood Smith) and Kitty (Debra Jo Rupp). The new show has also seen several other actors from the original series return, including Laura Prepon, Ashton Kutcher, Wilmer Valderrama, Mila Kunis, Don Stark and Tommy Chong.
Recently, Netflix announced That ‘90s Show would be getting a season 2 renewal, just weeks after the spinoff first premiered on January 19. When Grace discovered the news, however, he...

Warning! This article contains minor Spoilers for That '90s Show season 1!One line from Ozzie in That ‘90s Show season 1 proves that a spinoff following Red and Kitty’s youth in a That ‘50s Show spinoff would actually work. While That ‘70s Show did technically have an indirect spinoff with the canceled sitcom That ‘80s Show, it was virtually unconnected to the main story. As such, That ‘90s Show is the first official spinoff, with its popularity and success on Netflix increasing the likelihood of That ‘70s Show's franchise being expanded even further.
While there has yet to be any word on new spinoffs for That ‘70s Show, the best decade to cover after That ‘90s Show’s timeline would be the 1950s, thus taking the Formans’ story back in time. A prequel set around Point Place in the 1950s would add plenty of new layers to the beloved...

When That '80s Show failed to include the beloved weirdos from Point Place, it may have signed its own death warrant. So, where are all of our favorite characters now, and what have they been doing for the past 16 years?...

Once upon a time, most of television was like Poker Face, the new Peacock drama created by Glass Onion’s Rian Johnson and starring Russian Doll’s Natasha Lyonne. It is a purely episodic, case-of-the-week show. Each episode sets up its own specific story, which Lyonne’s Charlie Cale finds a way to conclude by the end of the hour. There are some extremely loose ongoing threads, but you could in theory watch every episode but the first in any order and get the same enjoyment out of each. It...

Selina Scott has claimed that she experienced sexual harassment while working as a presenter on BBC Breakfast in the Eighties.
Scott, who was one of the first co-hosts of BBC Breakfast Time in 1983, explained why she declined to be a guest on the BBC Breakfast show this week as part of its 40th anniversary celebrations.
She said it would be “dishonest” to appear on the show following her experiences on the show, which she claimed included being forced to deal with being kissed by co-presenter Frank Bough.
Scott also spoke about feeling forced to kiss Jimmy Savile when he appeared on the show as a guest, and said she felt women were placed on air for “decoration”.
The presenter told Daily Mail on Friday (20 January) that she was warned about the “snake-pit atmosphere” of the broadcasting house before she began her role.

That ’90s Show has dropped on Netflix, but while stars ofThat ’70s Show such as Topher Grace and Ashton Kutcher make an appearance, viewers won’t be hearing from Danny Masterson.
The 46-year-old actor appeared in court in November, charged with allegedly raping three women, including a former girlfriend, at his home between 2001 and 2003.
In December, the case ended in mistrial after the jury were deadlocked and unable to reach a verdict. Last week, prosecutors said that they would retry Masterson on all three counts.
At the time of the alleged assaults, Masterson was starring in That ’70s Show as Steven Hyde, a rebellious high school student and the best friend of series lead Eric (Grace).

Welcome back to Point Place! After eight seasons on the air, from 1998 to 2006, That '70s Show wrapped and continued to occupy a soft spot in the hearts of those that grew up watching the sitcom. Years later, cast members from the series decided to return to their memorable roles in a revival project entitled That '90s Show. No, it won't be related to That '80s Show, an unsuccessful spinoff that came out in 2002. Instead, the latest sitcom will continue from where it left off in the Og series, but with the inclusion of a new generation of angsty and complicated kids as the leads. Since Donna (Laura Prepon) and Eric's (Topher Grace) daughter Leia (Callie Haverda) is currently a teenager, she must face all the coming-of-age struggles that arise from relationships, popularity, and more. Luckily, she has a group of friends to help her navigate this tricky phase. Given that...

Let me save you some time: If you’re old enough to actually remember the ’90s, then That ’90s Show probably isn’t for you. Netflix is trying to recapture the retro magic of That ’70s Show with an all-new reboot — they’re calling it a “sequel series,” but really, it’s a reboot — with suburban parents Red and Kitty Forman enduring a new generation of unruly teens. But That ’90s Show (debuting today; I’ve seen the first three episodes) is an uninspired buzzkill: half tired nostalgia tour and half mediocre retread.

Lewis Capaldi is trying not to choke to death on confetti. One song into the first night of a gargantuan world tour and the confetti cannons have gone off, showering the audience at Leeds arena in small strips of white paper. “Cause I’m not ready,” he splutters, “to find out you know how to forget me.” It’s not the most dignified start but, then, Capaldi never did seem too concerned about that.
Capaldi is the UK music industry’s golden boy. A blend of charisma, candour and a vocal range similar to that of Adele led to a handful of Brit Awards, a Grammy nomination and sold-out arena tours. He shrugs off critics or else comes back at them with impish glee. A new poster for upcoming Netflix sitcom That '90s Show teases the show's return to one of That 70s Show's most iconic locations. After a successful run on Fox from 1998 to 2006, That '70s Show will be returning in the form of a revival show set in 1995, 15 years after the end of the original show's story's conclusion on New Year's Eve 1979. That '90s Show will see worlds colliding as many characters from the show's original run will return alongside a fresh, new cast of teenagers. While the original show was all about what it was like to grow up in the '70s, the revival will focus on what it's like for these new characters to grow into adults during the '90s.

The idea for That '90s Show was initially rejected by the creators of That '70s Show, but this decision only made the sequel series more exciting. Created by Bonnie and Terry Turner, That '70s Show focused on the lives of a group of teens living in the fictional Point Place, Wisconsin in the 1970s. The Turners eventually agreed to create a '90s-set revival for Netflix, though That '90s Show will focus on a new generation of teens, including Eric and Donna's daughter, Leia Forman (Callie Haverda).
In an interview (via Variety), Bonnie and Terry Turner revealed that when Netflix first reached out to them about creating a '90s sequel, they turned down the streaming service twice. The creators did come around to consider the idea—but only if they landed on the right concept. The Turners' original That '90s Show plan involved Eric's child from a music festival...

The That ‘90s Show creators offer insight on the writing process for the That '70s Show spinoff series. The successful decade-based sitcom That '70s Show ran for eight seasons from 1998 to 2006. It also spawned a British remake in 1999 and a related but separate series called That '80s Show in 2002. Netflix announced the spinoff That '90s Show in October 2021, with Debra Jo Rupp and Kurtwood Smith returning to reprise their That '70s Show roles 16 years later. Picking up 15 years after the original, That '90s Show will see original protagonist Eric (Topher Grace)'s daughter showing up at Red (Smith) and Kitty (Rupp)'s house to spend the summer with her grandparents.
Unlike the short-lived That '80s Show, That '90s Show will be a direct spinoff and sequel series to That '70s Show, featuring several of the characters from the original show as well as their children and sporting much of the same creative team.

In the event you've missed hanging out down the street, while doing the same old things you did last week, then Netflix has you covered with "That '90s Show," a sequel show to the hit sitcom "That '70s Show," which itself premiered in the '90s. Seeing as "Fuller House" was a hit for the streaming giant, it makes sense that it would want to try its hand at reviving another beloved series. But where "Fuller House" made sure to bring in all of the original cast members in lead roles, "That '90s Show" takes a bit of a different approach.

Ashton Kutcher perfectly captured the essence of why That ‘90s Show will be a success back in a 1998 interview. Repeating the nostalgic Happy Days effect, That ‘70s Show – which originally ran from 1998 to 2006 – still appeals to a broad demographic. Michael Kelso actor Ashton Kutcher explained how the series was able to appeal to various generations in “The Final Goodbye” special episode. According to the actor, those who grew up in the 1970s would enjoy pointing out the nostalgic novelties and clothing of the era, while the next generation would recognize that they’re still experiencing the same youthful conflicts over 20 years later.
Netflix’s That ‘90s Show will repeat this success trick, as those who grew up in the 1990s will enjoy callbacks to novelties of the era while the current generation of teens still recognizes their own experiences in the characters. This is part of why Netflix's Stranger Things...

Chicago is one of the great musical powerhouses of America. Since the Twenties, its Black population has produced colossal talents, such as classical composer Florence Price and soul singer Curtis Mayfield, not to mention any number of jazz pioneers, from Sun Ra to Quincy Jones to Herbie Hancock. Less well known to the mainstream than some of the above, saxophonist Henry Threadgill has a place in this pantheon, having crowned an eventful 50-year career with the prestigious Pulitzer Prize in 2016.

“The children of Dame Angela Lansbury are sad to announce that their mother died peacefully in her sleep at home in Los Angeles at 1.30am today, Tuesday, October 11, 2022, just five days shy of her 97th birthday,” her family said in a statement.
“In addition to her three children, Anthony, Deirdre and David, she is survived by three grandchildren, Peter, Katherine and Ian, plus five great grandchildren and her brother, producer Edgar Lansbury. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Peter Shaw.”
A private family ceremony will be held at a later date.

The “Bff Quiz” was a staple of the Eighties teen girl magazine. Back then, the media treated young women with open contempt. Female friendship was deemed too fickle and too poisonous to be determined by feelings – no, the only way to know if your bestie was really your bestie was to have them answer 12 hypothetical questions. Would they tell you if your new Esprit skirt was actually hideous? Would they get jealous if you started dating one of the popular boys? Would they douse your body in holy water if a supernatural entity took possession of your soul?
In My Best Friend’s Exorcism, banishing demons is the ultimate test of teen girl loyalty. It’s a devilishly smart and self-aware take on the current trend for Eighties horror homage, lovingly adapted from Grady Hendrix...
