The landscape of Netflix was forever changed in September 2019 by a single decision. In an effort to strengthen its international offerings, the red and black streaming service decided to pick up director, producer, and screenwriter Hwang Dong-hyuk’s dystopian story about a secret and deadly contest. Squid Game was the name and the nine-episode first season made its premiere two years later to an outstanding ovation from both audiences and critics alike.
The story of a downtrodden man who thrusts himself into a deadly version of a children’s game (and conspiracy) quickly garnered immense public response and all sorts of official awards, including Primetime Emmys and Golden Globes. Even with Netflix having a reputation for canceling the fondest of shows, it was pretty clear this thriller wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Just as the first did,...

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. And sometimes if we’re lucky we talk to movie stars about their B-Sides!
Today we talk to the great Eric Bana about Eric Bana B-Sides on the occasion of the release of his new film, Force of Nature: The Dry 2, now available in theaters and on VOD.
Our B-Sides today include: Lucky You, Romulus, My Father, and The Secret Scripture. Bana discusses why Lucky You maybe didn’t connect with audiences in 2007, how Romulus, My Father is actually quite the A-Side in Australia, and the need to be malleable when working with somebody like director Jim Sheridan.
We also talk about Bana’s detective influences for the Aaron Falk character in The Dry films, why...

Shoghakat Vardanyan’s “1489,” which follows the director’s family after her brother goes missing while serving in the Armenian army, won documentary festival IDFA’s best film prize Thursday.
The jury of the International Competition section said the film “acts as a piercing light that makes visible the vast hidden interior landscape of grief and creates a tangible presence from unbearable absence.”
The jury added that it was “cinema as a tool of survival — to allow us all to look at the things we would rather not see, and ultimately, an unforgettable example of cinema as an act of love.”
The best directing award went to Mohamed Jabaly for “Life Is Beautiful,” in which the Palestinian filmmaker documents his life in 2014 when he was visiting Norway and was prevented from returning home to Gaza because the border was closed.

Old Dads is a comedy film directed by Bill Burr, who also co-wrote the film with Ben Tishler. The Netflix film follows three middle-aged men, who find themselves not fitting in the customs of the modern and often times very fragile and easily offended world. Burr’s style of comedy makes the film work as he also stars in the lead role alongside Bobby Cannavale and Bokeem Woodbine. So, if you loved the Netflix film here are some similar movies you could watch next.

About My Father is a perfect 180 flip of another famous Robert De Niro movie. The new comedy stars De Niro as Salvo, the fictional father of comedian Sebastian Maniscalco. Maniscalo plays an exaggerated version of himself who is encouraged by his fiancée to invite his old-school Italian-American immigrant father to meet her wealthy family for a holiday weekend. The trip is faced with a number of cultural clashes and familial differences that create a variety of uncomfortably funny on-screen scenarios.
Released nationwide in theaters on May 26th, the De Niro-led comedy also stars David Rasche, Anders Holm, and Leslie Bibb. De Niro has starred in other funny roles in several comedy movies throughout his illustrious career including The Family, The Intern, Dirty Grandpa, and Analyze That. About My Father is strangely reminiscent of one distinct De Niro comedy.

Directed by Laura Terruso from a screenplay by comedian Sebastian Maniscalco and Austen Earl, About My Father has a fun, trope-y premise that somehow doesn’t land, and a fantastic cast can’t save it. It’s hard to come by a really good comedy these days, and though About My Father has its moments, its humor and story never reach the heights they were perhaps aiming for. At times sweet and occasionally funny, the film leaves a lot to be desired despite a stellar cast, and is an exercise in wasted potential.
Sebastian (Maniscalco) was raised by his working class immigrant parents. He always saw his father, Salvo (Robert De Niro), as his hero growing up. As an adult, Sebastian and his father don’t always see eye to eye, but there’s still love there. When Sebastian decides he’s ready to propose to his longtime girlfriend, Ellie...

“This was not planned,” says stand-up comedian Sebastian Maniscalco about his auto-biopic comedy About My Father making it to the screen.
“This is not something I had on my vision board,” he tells us on today’s Crew Call.
About My Father, directed by Laura Terruso, and written by Austen Earl and Maniscalco, follows the stand-up as he meets his posh wife’s well-to-do family. Complicating matters is Maniscalco’s salon stylist immigrant Italian father, Salvo (played by Robert De Niro) is also along for the ride.
Earl and Maniscalco bonded as both of their wives “come from a better cut of cloth” as the stand-up puts it.
How did Terruso win the job?
“She had –I don’t know what the hell it was–a power point presentation,” Maniscalco tells us, “She came in with visuals of what the wardrobe is going to be; I’m a visual guy.
