    Awakening versus Oppresion

There is quite a theme running through the movie. And it is not just the fact that our lead is struggling with her sexuality. Because it is not just what she is feeling, but how society (or rather the village she lives in) makes her feel about it. And there is quite some foreshadowing going on, that should be able to tell you where this is going.

And it is not an easy movie to watch. Not just because the main woman is so troubled and therefor makes it an uncomfortable watch. But because of how people react and how things spiral out of control. Now all that is quite an achievement for the movie, but it probably will turn people off (no pun intended) with all the nudity. There is even erect penis at display (though no actual penetration can be seen, as far as I could tell, I didn't really bother checking). So if that makes you feel uncomfortable, be warned. But there is even something worse towards the end happening ... it's really despicable and there is social commentary. So there is something there - it just could have done with a better packaging, maybe a shorter running time. Overall decent and quite a punch in the gut ...

    Death of virtue

Story of ignorance very common in small isolated barrios in the Philippines. The movie however exaggerated the sexual orientation of the people.

Stars former Ms. Philippines, Ma. Isabel Lopez, including the soft-drink beauties of the late chief exploiter, Dr. Rey Dela Cruz who was murdered sometime in the '90s. It was so disappointing that Ms. Lopez, a UP graduate, used her beauty and brain to trash herself and the institution and country she used to represent.

This movie was produced during the era of the Experimental Cinema of the Philippine when some starlets in local show business were exploited to create sex-oriented movies. Marcos was still in power, and maybe this passed his approval to divert Filipinos from the worsening political and economic problems. Most of these experimental cinema allowed "pene" so don't be surprised if the there were actual "penetration" in this movie.

Produced by Elwood Perez and directed by Ricardo Lee. This experiment was definitely an on your face spit to the only Catholic nation in Asia.

The Devils (1971) meets The Crucible halfway in the edge of the Philippines.

Silip (which translate literally as Sneak Peek/ Peek-A-Boo -a nod to its sexploitation beginning) tells the story of a rural salt drying area deep within the mountains of northern Philippines where urbanism and sexual politics has yet to arrive. When an old inhabitant with her beau returns, a thirst within the a trio of women and a local hotshot results into a grim sexual doom within the conservative area.

    Ehh.

I think there is an argument to say the last half of the film could be considered as a masterpiece BUT there are just moments in this that feels like Men writing Women. It just reeks its exploitation far too close to its "meaningful" themes at times. It distracts in a negative way. It focuses on them as sex object unable to control their desires but in a way that only sex-ploitation would do. I think especially towards the key sexual scene towards the end.

Also, the script here is very awkward. I sometimes think that the subtitle is doing it so much favors lol. I speak Tagalog, and even for that times standard - it does come off quite stilted AND very heavy on exposition of themes.

Its kinda sad, because I really think this was such great acting in this. I especially love Myra Manibog's portrayal of a sex-crazed philandering wife who just wants them nuts hard. She hits the gothic stylization that the film needed. Sarsi Emmanuel and Ma. Isabel Lopez where more nuanced but ultimately was also good.

Not recommended but I think Scorpio Nights developed these themes in a much better light.

    Disturbing and Original

This is a truly disturbing and beautifully made piece of cinema that definitely goes places where other films fear to tread.

Those wishing to gawp at another cheesy exploiter will probably not find much to enjoy here. There are exploitative elements aplenty, but they're not simply thrown in for cheap thrills. This is a film that delivers a powerful emotional punch if you're prepared to let it work its magic on you.

There was a cut and badly dubbed English version on the "gray market" a while back. Seeing this remastered, correctly framed version with the original soundtrack is like discovering the film for the first time.

    Don't miss it.

A primitive film from the Paleolithic era reminiscent of the Incas, Aztecs, and Mayans.

These films are Philippine films that feature primitive Philippine women, just like the Latin American Inca and Aztec kingdoms who lived at the level of the Paleolithic era. In this movie, it is interesting to see the primitive women of the Philippines competing with each other to eat the foreigner as they come. It is also a pornographic film, so it is faithful to pornography. Anyway, it's a fun movie. It was nice to be able to see the culture and appearance of the Philippines. Among Southeast Asian countries, the most underdeveloped country is the Philippines, and I was able to see this in detail.

    • Trivia
In this 1985 movie all the sex scenes are simulated. In a 2007 interview Maria Isabel Lopez explained how Filipino producers and directors started from 1986 to make 'pene' film: "When you do a sexy film, audiences would demand more. What will you show next? And then the filmmaker would have to outdo himself by showing more. So there was this escalation of violence and sensuality. After my generation, you know what happened? The sexy films became movies with penetration. I don't do that stuff, mine is just simulated. After that, they have to outdo themselves. The filmmakers, the producers and the move-going public wanted to see more. So they have to discover even younger actresses in the street, discover lesser stars, and the actresses became like toilet paper. That's how they (the producers) described them - tissue paper. Use them once and then throw them away. Use them for one to two films - they haven't even recovered money yet to buy themselves a car, and they are already out of the industry. And then they'll get a fresher face, younger. So my contemporaries were a decade younger than me. Because I was in my mid twenties when I was doing the sexy films, and the other films, the lead star is fifteen years old! You know, I was a middle aged woman, and my span of being a sexy star was up to one decade. I was in the industry so long, and there was a huge turnover of actresses. I outlasted them. But I told you, I have a supporting cast who will do all of the worst scenes. And since I'm the blockbuster drawer, I'm the crowd drawer in the film, they capitalize on my name, they listen to my ground rules."
