Seema and Ilavarasi are siblings and they live together in a small house .
Seema is in love with Venu who is her colleague. They belong to low mid class economically . Seema is very protective about her younger sister. Ilavarasi is at an awkward age where she is neither a child nor an adult .
When she attains puberty , Seema merely helps her with basic protection. She is never able to sit with her and explain the changes inside her and outside in the society .
Ilavarasi grows very confused and dazed about new changes .. good ... bad ... morality character... . In fact her neighbor a girl of her own age is herself changing boy friends every day and coming to boast about her conquests .
Seema gets married to Venu in a small registration court . He comes to live with her without much fuss or abundance .
Ilavarasi starts missing her old loving sister who now has to divide her time between herself and her new husband . Unwittingly she starts snooping on them . Both Seema and Venu are aware of it and try to mend fences telling her time and again that she is indeed the centre of their attention.
Seema often is chastising her little sister for creeping around .
Finally fed up of her interference , they send her off to a hostel . She starts college life as any normal girl . Her room mate Unni Mary is a receptionist in a hotel . She also works as an escort on the side . The local video shop owner Mohanlal is her pimp .
She keeps Ilavarasi away from all this . Initially taken as a loose girl , Unni's soft side emerges as she realises that her room mate is a very innocent girl. She takes Ilavarasi on some of her outings but cautions her about such people in society .
Unni gets pregnant and Mohanlal takes her to a rustic illegal abortion centre . Ilavarai is shocked at all this . When Unni is unwell and resting , she herself slowly starts going around with Mohanlal who is more than happy to replace his previous girl friend.
The local hostel watchman Ravi Menon is her silent lover . He knows whats going on with her and tries his best to keep her out of all this murk and filth.
Involuntarily Ilavarsi gets drawn in this murky world of carnalities. Very soon its time for her own abortion. She herself asks Mohanlal to take her there and gets it . She is unapologetic about her new way of life . Super self over confident about her new found woman hood she uses it to her full advantage . Mohanlal is an equal party to this . Meanwhile her sister Seema and Venu come visiting her regularly but are unaware of this new development They innocently assume that she is out for studies or with friends .
Unni comes to know this but is not able to do much. When she recovers she is back on the streets but due to her failing health she does not find any takers.
After her illegal procedure , Ilavarasi falls ill . When she does not get better after few days , She realises her mistake and returns back home . Seema then realieses her own mistake of not being the full confidante of her little sister. Ilavarasi meets a gruesome poignant ending when she dies due to medical complications .
Ilavarasi looks cute and fresh in her role of an adolescent . Seema is slim and wears cotton saris mostly to show their megre economic status . Fair and slim Unni is perfect as an eye candy and a mature woman who knows it all . The hostel matron shows a lot of unwanted interest in the new Ilavarasi . She herself is a threat if not checked in time by Unni . Mohanlal is fine as unapologetic villain who knows it all and does it all. Over all a fine eye opener for girls or boys in our society even today .
