It may sound like a silly idea at first, but it was actually one of Kemp's biggest ambitions since his Eastenders days. He loved to read Charles Dickens' classic novel and wanted to star in a production of it, but the BBC would not let him produce it for them, so he turned to ITV (the BBC's biggest competitor) instead. He would end up producing shows with ITV for several more years after this film.
