Writer-director Florian Zeller had such great success with his 2020 film adaptation of his stage play The Father which earned six Oscar nominations including Best Picture — winning for his and co-writer Christopher Hampton’s screenplay, as well as Best Actor for Anthony Hopkins — that he was able to move quickly in getting a film version going for his next play, 2018’s Le Fils. The result, The Son, premiering Wednesday at the Venice Film Festival in competition, is the second of a three-part stage and film series on stories dealing with mental health; in this case, a troubled 17-year-old boy who has been deeply affected by the divorce of his parents and is suffering severe problems. Of course, The Father dealt with one elderly man’s devastating descent into dementia and the effect that had on his family, and it was an intimate film production for Zeller, largely taking place in the man’s apartment,...

Hugh Jackman hosted the Oscars in 2009 and was nominated for Best Actor in 2013 for “Les Misérables,” and while it’s way, way too early to tell, he’s got everything lined up for a return trip this year. He’s teamed with the French novelist/playwright turned director Florian Zeller, whose adaptation of his 2012 play “Le Père” became the 2020 film “The Father” which gave Anthony Hopkins his surprise Best Actor Academy Award in 2021 over the late Chadwick Boseman. And while this one doesn’t appear to have the disorienting time-shifts of an unreliable narrator, it does have plenty of people yelling at one another in coldly decorated rooms.
The new project, “The Son,” based on the 2018 play “Le Fils,” is not a sequel, per say, but part of a “spiritual trilogy” from Zeller. While Hopkins does make an appearance in this, it’s a little unclear if he is playing the same role.

The Son, which is based on the 2018 play Le Fils written by director Florian Zeller, is reportedly set to be released later this year, with Hugh Jackman taking on the role of the protagonist Peter (via Variety). As there are no trailers or teasers released for the movie yet, fans are anticipating what the Australian actor's latest performance could entail.
Since his role as Wolverine in the X-Men franchise, Hugh Jackman has become arguably one of the most popular and successful actors currently working today, with a beloved fanbase due to his large and genre-crossing filmography. Fans have taken to Letterboxd to rank Jackman's best films, and while the review site includes the many documentaries Jackman has been part of, consideration is given to his highest-rated feature film roles.

"Synecdoche, New York" is the best film of the decade. It intends no less than to evoke the strategies we use to live our lives. After beginning my first viewing in confusion, I began to glimpse its purpose and by the end was eager to see it again, then once again, and I am not finished. Charlie Kaufman understands how I live my life, and I suppose his own, and I suspect most of us. Faced with the bewildering demands of time, space, emotion, morality, lust, greed, hope, dreams, dreads and faiths, we build compartments in our minds. It is a way of seeming sane.
The mind is a concern in all his screenplays, but in "Synecdoche" (2008), his first film as a director, he makes it his subject, and what huge ambition that demonstrates. He's like a
novelist who wants to get it all into the first book in case he never publishes another.

'Son' proves Belgian favorite
BERLIN -- The Dardenne brothers' minimalist drama Le Fils (The Son) swept Belgium's top film honors Thursday night, winning three prizes, including the nod for best film. Writers-helmers Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne also took home the best director prize at the 18th annual Joseph Plateau Awards. Olivier Gourmet was named best actor for his lead performance in The Son, which centers on a carpenter and his enigmatic relationship with a young student. Gourmet adds his Joseph Plateau prize to the best actor award he won at the Festival de Cannes last year for the same role. The best actress award was a split decision, with both Antje De Boeck and Els Dottermans taking home the Plateau statuette -- De Boeck for her role in Hop and Dottermans for Girl.
