A Wrinkle in Time might be beloved, but its filmed adaptations haven't gotten much love from The Hollywood Reporter.
Critic Todd McCarthy offers a less-than-glowing opinion of the new Disney version directed by Ava DuVernay and starring Oprah Winfrey (see page 89). But his review is sparkling compared to the shellacking the 2004 TV movie received from Ray Richmond. If a critic notes in his opening sentence that he's "a huge fan" of the original work, watch out.
A few paragraphs later, Richmond is calling the ABC presentation that starred Alfre Woodard...

Ava DuVernay didn't read Madeleine L'Engle's 1962 novel A Wrinkle in Time as a young girl. But, when she agreed to direct the $100 million movie for Disney, she had some stipulations. Chief among them: The director wanted to hire a diverse cast of characters. "I wasn't just casting for actresses," she says in the current issue of Time. "I was casting for leaders—icons." And did she ever. Mindy Kaling, Oprah Winfrey and Reese Witherspoon were cast as Mrs. Who, Mrs. Which and Mrs. Whatsit, respectively, while Rowan Blanchard, Zach Galifianakis, André Holland, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Deric McCabe, Levi Miller, Michael Peña and Chris Pine round out the star-studded cast. Looking ahead at 2018, it's going to be another exciting, spectacular year for the science fiction genre. With a few weeks to go until the New Year, Looper put out a video previewing some of the most anticipated sci-fi movies opening in 2018. They call the video "Sci Fi Movies That Will Completely Blow You Away In 2018," though that's some epic hype. I'm just happy to see this much sci-fi, it means the genre is truly in a new era of brilliance with so many boundary-pushing films on the horizon. The video profiles most of the major sci-fi movies coming out in 2018, like The Predator, Ready Player One, Annihilation, and A Wrinkle in Time, but misses one big one - the Cloverfield movie, currently set for February 2nd though that might change. This is a good video to watch to get you in the mood for some awesome movies to anticipate in...

Warner Bros. has released a new poster for Tomb Raider, featuring Alicia Vikander as the iconic video game character Lara Croft. The poster is a decided improvement over the first Tomb Raider poster, which several fans called out on social media, due to a poor Photoshopping job on Alicia Vikander's neck, which lead to several parody posters. This new one-sheet likely won't have the same type of response, but it will be interesting to see how fans of the video game franchise react to this movie as a whole
It was confirmed last March that this movie adaptation is based on the current Tomb Raider video game series, which was launched in 2013, focusing on a younger Lara Croft as she just starts out as an adventurer. As expected, this movie also follows a similar story with Lara searching for her long-lost father. Lara Croft, the fiercely independent daughter of a missing adventurer,...

Disney is upping the ante with A Wrinkle in Time and the latest trailer proves that we're in for a wild ride come March of next year, when the movie hits theaters. Disney released a new poster and a teaser for the second trailer late last week in advance for the hotly anticipated movie. While the short teaser didn't reveal much new footage, it ramped up the intensity and made the nature of dark and light look really intense this time around. Most of the footage in the teaser was derived from the first trailer that debuted back in July, but the new trailer shows off plenty of brand-new footage from A Wrinkle in Time.
There is no other studio that can bring a classic fantasy epic to life better than Disney, and their second trailer for A Wrinkle in Time proves just that. The new video shows the movie's...

Disney just dropped the official trailer for A Wrinkle In Time during tonight's 2017 American Music Awards and it looks out of this world! Ava DuVernay's adaptation is based on the Madeleine L'Engle book from 1962 and deals with the consequences of inter-space travel, specifically from Earth to a planet that possesses all the evil and darkness in the world. As seen in the center of the poster, Dr. Alex Murry, played by Chris Pine, discovers a way to travel to a new planet he discovers. Unfortunately, this move opens the floodgates of travel and the planet's darkness begins to spread freely throughout the universe. Dr. Murry's kids, Meg (Storm Reed) and Charles (Deric...

Disney is flexing its muscles in the marketplace. The studio is not only launching a streaming site to compete with Netflix, but demanding from domestic exhibitors a firm 65 per cent aggregate film rental –the percentage of ticket sales that theaters return to studios– for “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.” This is yet another sign of the top-ranked studio’s confidence and assertiveness.
There’s reason for cock-of-the-walk status. Over the last two holiday seasons, Disney’s first two reboots in the “Star Wars” franchise amassed nearly $1.5 billion in domestic gross, in both cases the biggest release of their respective years (on the all-time adjusted charts, #11 and 57).
Disney’s bold move is underscores its proximity to becoming more powerful than any studio in the history of Hollywood. And it comes as their successful brand label strategy looks impossible to replicate for the foreseeable future.

Aside from a Tomb Raider remake photo that dropped last week, featuring a new look at Lara Croft (Alicia Vikander), there haven't been many updates on the reboot, but according to Alicia Vikander, the new trailer will be coming soon. The actress didn't offer any specifics, but there is one distinct possibility, as to when the trailer could debut.

The events of the last several weeks, while horrible, raise several issues that affect us not only as citizens, but as creative people and fans of the popular arts.
How do we respond to racism and other forms of bigotry in our government. Do we cooperate and try to change the minds of the people in power? Do we quit and make a statement? Do we resist? Do we perform non-violent acts of civil disobedience and fill the jails?
In my life, I’ve advocated (and disagreed with) all of these things. Different times in my life, different circumstances, different perspectives. Therefore, I hesitate to call out people who make different choices than I do, as long as we share the goals of a fair and just, egalitarian, non-hateful non-violent society.

For some time, director Ava DuVernay and Disney have been hard at work at adapting the classic Madeleine L'Engle novel A Wrinkle in Time for the big screen. Yes, it’s an all too familiar tale that’s been adapted several times before, but make no mistake, this is undoubtedly the most high profile adaptation yet. As such, it has a budget to match it, and from what we can tell, it certainly shows quite a bit.
Between the bright colors, A-list talent, and vibrant imagery, DuVernay’s A Wrinkle in Time looks like it may be quite the crowd pleaser.

Chicago – The 44th edition of the Non-Equity Jeff Awards were given out on June 5th, 2017, at what insiders call “the theater prom.” The event honors the non-union smaller or “storefront” theater companies, and their efforts to produce quality stage work. Hosted in grand style by Alexis Roston and Lillian Castillo, the recipients of the top play was “At the Table” by the Broken Nose Theatre and top musical was “High Fidelity” by the Refuge Theatre Project.

Harry Potter, Pirates Of The Caribbean, even The Exorcist: they're four-quadrant movies. But what does that even mean...?
The summer of 1990 was a good one for blockbuster cinema. Notwithstanding the fact that Dick Tracy and Gremlins 2 didn’t get the expected financial returns – and in the latter case, that’s a scandal – it saw the emergence, for one, of Arnold Schwarzenegger as a bona-fide movie star. He finally reached the top off the back of an 18-rated science fiction Philip K Dick adaptation, Total Recall. In a summer laden with hits, it was one of the biggest.
The film was one of the top ten of the year overall too, notable in particular now because it targeted adults, and was a hard science fiction blockbuster. Other films in that top 10? The tense Jack Ryan feature, The Hunt For Red October. There was Pretty Woman, an R-rated romantic comedy with sinister undertones.

Movie scheduling is a big, ongoing game, and as soon as one studio announces their moves, it doesn't take long for another to put their cards on the table. 2018 is shaping up to be perhaps the biggest year for superhero movies to date as Fox has added three Marvel movies to their schedule. While we’ve known for a while that something would be coming from them next year, this announcement still came as a big surprise!
First up is Josh Boone’s New Mutants on April 13th, 2018. In a stacked year, that will square off with a currently untitled Universal Classic Monsters Movie and will have to contend with Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time during its second week. Dwayne Johnson’s Rampage opens on the 20th, so that could really hurt this movie at the box office.
Deadpool 2 is coming on June 1st, 2018 and while the first movie exceeded expectations, this one could suffer despite having nothing opening opposite it right now. That’s because Han Solo is on the way the week...

Newly titled Ralph Breaks The Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 to open March 9, 2018.
A delayed start to Tuesday night’s Disney presentation meant distribution chief Dave Hollis raced through the studio’s upcoming slate before the Colosseum audience settled down to watch Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
Hollis hailed once again the studio’s remarkable 2016 at the box office that generated $7.6bn worldwide and delivered four films on more than $1bn each.
The executive noted this was the year when for the first time Disney released a film from each of its divisions: Marvel Studios, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Disney, Pixar and Lucasfilm.
Turning to the pipeline for the next few years, he revealed that Jane Lynch and Jack McBrayer have joined John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman on Ralph Breaks The Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2.

... Now this is a party we wish we could've attended!
It's already been established that Oprah Winfrey and Reese Witherspoon are basically having the best time ever shooting their rendition of A Wrinkle in Time in New Zealand, but on Wednesday, they took things to a whole new level at the wrap party. Director Ava DuVernay posted video of Winfrey getting behind the bar and making margaritas on her Instagram Stories, and the 63-year-old legendary media mogul is clearly pretty great at it!
"This is how we do it!" DuVernay joked as Winfrey blended up and poured the delicious-looking drinks.

Much like The Force Awakens before it, Star Wars: The Last Jedi has been partially shot in IMAX.
Two years ago, J.J. Abrams utilized the large-screen format while filming scenes in Abu Dhabi, as he set about crafting the origin story of Rey, along with that Millennium Falcon chase sequence that had viewers perched on the edge of their seats. Little is currently known about how director Rian Johnson will incorporate his own IMAX sequences into The Last Jedi, but let’s not forget that the director hauled an IMAX camera to Skellig Michael, the Irish isle that doubles as the First Jedi Temple, so a scene involving Luke and Rey is almost a forgone conclusion. Either way, rest assured that Disney’s Episode VIII will take advantage of the exclusive aspect ratio and increased image quality that IMAX affords.
Today’s announcement is part of an extended multi-picture deal...

Twenty-two film projects, including Warner Bros.’ A Star Is Born remake starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, have been selected to receive tax credits under California’s Film & Television Tax Credit Program 2.0.
The list includes one so-called big-budget film, an untitled Paramount project, which would have been ineligible under the state’s first-generation tax credit program, which excluded projects with budgets greater than $75 million.
In contrast, Program 2.0 is open to film projects with any budget (though credits are capped to each project’s first $100 million in qualified spending). It joins Disney’s previously announced A Wrinkle in Time as...

A full year’s worth of data on the program is reflected in the California Film Commission’s first official annual report on the expanded Program 2.0, which was released on Thursday. Cfc estimates the new program will generate $1.5 billion in direct in-state spending, including $600 million in below-the-line wages. I still haven't read all of Madeleine L'Engle's Newberry Medal-winning book A Wrinkle in Time, but I'm very excited to see what Selma and 13th director Ava DuVernay does with Disney's upcoming big budget film adaptation. The story follows a young girl named Meg (Storm Reid), her little brother, and her friend who go on a search for her missing father, a government scientist who was working on a top secret project involving an inter-dimensional tesseract. Joining the trio on their journey are three supernatural beings: Mrs. Which (Oprah Winfrey), Mrs. Who (Mindy Kaling), and Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon).
Variety reports that Gugu Mbatha-Raw has joined the cast and she'll be playing Dr. Murry, Meg's mother and a scientist, who, along with Meg's father, discovers the wrinkle in time. DuVernay took to Twitter to confirm the news:
"Don't hope it was a dream." Thrilled to confirm that Gugu Mbatha-Raw has joined #TeamWrinkle as Dr.
