Twenty-five years ago, the evolution of comic book movies leaped forward. On July 14, 2000, Marvel Comics' not-so-merry band of mutants, the X-Men, made their way from the comic pages to the big screen, changing the company's cinematic fortunes and making the box office safe for the team-based superhero movies that would follow years later.
It should be noted off the top that Blade ice-skated uphill so that X-Men could run downhill to franchise-launching success. Wesley Snipes' 1998 vampire movie brought the comic-book movie genre back from the brink of extinction courtesy of the mega-bomb that was 1997's Batman & Robin. Blade was also the first Marvel Comics-derived film that didn't fall into direct-to-video hell like failed versions of Captain America and The Punisher, and Roger Corman's never-released take on the Fantastic Four.
Still, X-Men's existence was far from guaranteed even after Blade pointed a way forward for Marvel.

Having completed a full week of release in theaters worldwide, Universal’s Jurassic World Rebirth has already passed the $200 million mark domestically and the $400 million mark worldwide. The seventh installment of the long-running action-adventure franchise will likely pass the $500 million mark this weekend, as it takes aim at the coveted $1 billion milestone that each of its three predecessors managed to hit in their theatrical runs. Rebirth was conceived as a soft reboot of the franchise, which concluded its previous narrative arc with Jurassic World Dominion only a few years ago.
That movie opened to terrible reviews, and was perceived to have underperformed at the global box office despite having made over $1 billion. It cost a reported $265 million to produce, which was high, but not as high as the reported $432 million that was spent on its predecessor, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Directed by J.A. Folks, I have a confession. While those who know me best might tell you that I’m something of an X-Men apologist who will give every film involving these characters more than a fair shake- The truth is that 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand is one of the most disappointing movies of my entire fanboy lifetime. I mean, there’s just too many questions I have every time I watch this film. Why did they rush the production and sacrifice the inclusion of some of their most popular characters? When is this distant future that looks awesome and then turns out to be a danger simulator? Which plot line should we be paying attention to most? Who is this movie for? And, of course, the biggest question I’m left with after watching X-Men: The Last Stand is… Where the hell is Nightcrawler?
See, after the release of X2: X-Men United...

A good storyline will keep fans interested in a superhero movie, but they also need action. Those are the moments that people often remember and go back to. Fans won’t forget Wolverine and Deadpool’s first fight, any of Batman’s many battles, and Nightcrawler’s epic arrival at the White House during X2: X-Men United. The latter is brought up because we could be getting another action masterpiece from Kurt Wagner in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Avengers: Doomsday.
During a recent Q&a with Marvel fans (via The Cosmic Circus), Alex Perez was asked if Nightcrawler (who will be played by the returning Alan Cumming) would have a “decent amount of screen time in Doomsday.” Perez responded, “I heard he has some incredible action sequences, one of which involves the use of his signature swords.” If this turns out to be true, then we could witness one of...

Nicholas Hoult is “excited” to see what Marvel does with Kelsey Grammer’s Beast in Avengers: Doomsday. The 70-year-old actor portrayed the mutant superhero in 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: Days of Future Past in 2014, and with Grammer set to reprise his role for Marvel’s upcoming team-up blockbuster, Hoult - who played a younger Beast from 2011’s X-Men: First Class to Dark Phoenix in 2019 - has now opened up on getting the chance to see Grammer back in action as the character for Avengers: Doomsday.Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the 35-year-old actor said: “Kelsey was a great Beast. He was the Beast I saw when I was a kid.” The Superman star added he was also glad to see Grammer’s fellow X-Men stars Sir Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Sir Ian McKellen (Magneto) and James Marsden (Cyclops) get the chance to suit up once again for the 2026 Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film.

Of all the actors announced during the recent Avengers: Doomsday's cast reveal live-stream, Alan Cumming might have been the most surprising.
Cumming made his one and only appearance in 20th Century Fox's X-Men franchise as Kurt Wagner, aka Nightcrawler, in X2, but declined the studio's offer to reprise the role for the third film because he had no interest in sitting through the arduous makeup process again.
Wagner didn't show up in again until Kodi Smit-McPhee took over as a younger take on the character in X-Men: Apocalypse, but the character was pretty much relegated to background support aside from a couple of decent action scenes.
Nightcrawler's charismatic, Errol Flynn-inspired nature has yet to be fully explored in live-action, but it sounds like we will get to see the teleporter's swashbuckling side when Cumming reprises the role in Avengers: Doomsday.

While it may seem like a dream job to be an actor, the reality can often be very different if things don’t quite go as planned on a film set. That was true for X-Men star Alan Cumming, who is set to return to the Marvel fold as Nightcrawler in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, and has found the whole experience much more enjoyable than when he worked on X2: X-Men United back in 2003.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Cumming explained how his Marvel return was as much a shock to him as anyone else and was not something that he ever believed would happen. Recalling the “miserable” experience he had working on his previous X-Men outing, The Traitors host said:
"No [I didn't expect the call to return]. There was already a younger version of my character played by Kodi Smit-McPhee. That’s happened to me several times, where there’s a remake of something...

The Avengers: Doomsday cast reveal saw Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), James Marsden (Cyclops), Kelsey Grammer (Beast), and Deadpool & Wolverine's Channing Tatum (Gambit) all board the movie.
Characters like Jean Grey (Famke Janssen), Storm (Halle Berry), and Rogue (Anna Paquin) are all notable by their absence, as is Hugh Jackman's Wolverine (though we got a potentially positive update on that front yesterday). We expect to see a bigger X-Men team than the one above, perhaps with a few new Multiversal Variants added to the mix for good measure.

Arguably, one of the most recognizable and popular Marvel comic book franchises is the X-Men. The world can be complicated, add to it the existence of both good and bad people with special abilities a.k.a. the mutants, and you have a story that continues to thrill, enamor, and entertain audiences.
The X-Men comprised of two sides: Charles Xavier / Professor X's team of mutants who seek to protect humanity, and Magneto's acolytes hellbent on controlling the human race. Each mutant had a unique name, ability, personality, and design.
As popular as these characters were, they wouldn't arrive on the big screen until the 2000 film X-Men. Regardless of the differences in the story from the original source material, including costume changes, this film put X-Men in a whole new light, perhaps becoming the catalyst for the superhero films that followed. The opening scene of a movie is essential for obvious reasons. The first thing you see when you’re watching a movie is what sets the tone for the rest of the experience. It also usually introduces the core themes of the film. Or, at least the seeds that will become those themes. And of course, the most important thing about a movie’s opening scene is… It’s almost always something cool. One thing is clear: whether it’s the opening kill in Scream, the opening heist in The Dark Knight, or even the beginning of Fight Club, which starts at the end of the movie. Your opening scene needs to hook the audience in. And folks, come in close- because today we’re talking about the opening scene from X-Men 2 and my fanboy brain is buzzing right now. Most of you probably know this scene already, and if you’re like me,...

When X-Men arrived on the big screen in 2000, the comic book world was very different. DC Comics had been successful in movies until 1997's infamous Batman & Robin ended that trend. Marvel was much worse, though, with rough projects until 1998's Blade became a hit and changed things forever.
So when Bryan Singer brought X-Men to the big screen, hopes were high he could reverse this trend. He more than succeeded as the movie was a smash hit that pleased not just comic book fans but general audiences as well. It would begin an epic franchise that would see various ups and downs over the next two decades.

The summer of 2025 will mark the 20th anniversary of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia." The series, which is centered on the infamous Gang that owns the failing Paddy's Pub, helped launch the careers of Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, Rob McElhenney, and Kaitlin Olson. When the second season premiered, the series gained considerable notoriety with the addition of Hollywood legend Danny DeVito, whose mere presence on the series is inherently hilarious. The success of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" has led the cast to pursue more exciting opportunities, with Charlie Day perhaps being the most notable of the team, thanks to his roles in high-profile studio films that include comedies such as "Horrible Bosses," action blockbusters like "Pacific Rim," and notable voice work in animated films including "Monsters University," "The Lego Movie," and most recently, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," where he voiced Luigi.

Alan Cumming’s return to Marvel’s cinematic lineup has already created a stir, but it’s an offhand comment during a recent interview that may have ignited a new round of speculation about Avengers: Doomsday. During a promotional conversation with BuzzFeed UK, the actor, known for portraying Nightcrawler in 2003’s X2: X-Men United, shared an anecdote that has led many to believe a key scene in the upcoming film may involve a direct clash with Pedro Pascal’s Mister Fantastic.
Marvel Studios has remained characteristically silent on the storyline of Avengers: Doomsday, which is set to release on May 1, 2026. However, Cumming’s remark—delivered with a casual tone—implied that his character might be involved in an action sequence with Pascal’s Reed Richards. “I was learning stunts yesterday for some fight scene and I just think, I’m 60 years old. 23 years ago, I played that superhero,” Cumming said.

It's nice when the lads go for a night out on a Friday, isn't it? That's exactly what one of the most star-studded screenings you could imagine at an impromptu time has given us, as Simu Liu and a few mates went down to the pictures for a screening of Thunderbolts*, the latest movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Who did he go with, you ask? We'll fill you in. First of all, there's Winston Duke, Paul Rudd and Channing Tatum. Pretty good, right? Anthony Mackie was there too. Captain America likes a good flick, after all. Chris Hemsworth and his giant arms tagged along and, oh, who's that at the back? It's Doctor Doom himself, Robert Downey Jr. looking distinctly... unlike Tony Stark.

By the time Chris Claremont took over as writer of Marvel's X-Men comic with issue No. 94, there had been an amalgam of various speculative storylines regarding Nightcrawler's (Kurt Wagner) origin, backstory, and mutant lineage. Claremont initially added an image-inducer as part of Kurt’s storyline to hide his indigo-colored skin and demonic-like features that manifested in yellow eyes, a prehensile forked tail, pointed ears, and two-toed feet and three-fingered hands.

Ben Affleck MCU Interview (Photo Credit – Wikipedia)
Ben Affleck’s connection to Daredevil is something that’ll never be forgotten by comic book fans. Back in 2003, he took on the role of Matt Murdock in Daredevil, a film that didn’t quite land with critics but still holds a special place in the hearts of many fans. His portrayal of the blind lawyer turned vigilante didn’t have the same cultural impact as the MCU’s later heroes, but it definitely helped lay the groundwork for superhero films in the early 2000s.
Since then, the character of Daredevil has seen a massive revival, most notably in Netflix’s 2015 Daredevil series, which redefined the character as darker, grittier, and more mature. Despite the gap between his turn as the Man Without Fear and the more recent versions, Affleck’s time in the red suit remains iconic, and it’s clear that...

Having completed two months in theaters worldwide, Marvel's Captain America: Brave New World is nearing the end of its run. It'll soon debut on digital, where new audiences will hopefully be able to check it out. Not too many people, relatively speaking, showed up to watch the film in theaters. Brave New World remains one of the lowest-grossing installments of the Marvel Cinematic Universe — the biggest film franchise in global box office history. That being said, it passed a couple of landmark superhero movies on its way out.
With $413 million in the bank so far at the global box office, Brave New World has now overtaken the $412 million lifetime global haul of Tim Burton's Batman, which set records during its original run in 1989. The movie has also overtaken the $406 million lifetime global haul of X-2: X-Men United, often considered one of the greatest comic book movies ever made. Brave New World...

Alan Cumming is returning to the Marvel universe to reprise his Nightcrawler role in Avengers: Doomsday.
In a new interview, the Traitors U.S. host teased that the makeup process has changed since starring in 2003’s X2, making it easier to play the character.
“It’s 23 years since I was a superhero,” Cumming said recently during an interview on NBC’s Today with Jenna & Friends.
When Jenna Bush Hager asked Cumming if he was going to be wearing all that makeup again, the actor said, “I had some makeup tests already.”
“Actually, what’s great about it, it was four and a half to five hours before, and now it was 90 minutes,” he said, before explaining that “before all the tattoos were done by hand because they hadn’t decided on thm before we started filming and now there are all these little things that stick on — it’s a game changer.

Preparations are underway for Alan Cumming’s return to the X-Men franchise and his introduction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Traitors host is one of many actors who joined the cast of Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday where he will reprise his role as Kurt Wagner, aka Nightcrawler. With the film set to soar into theaters in May 2026, Cumming revealed he’s already undergone makeup tests, sessions that have underscored the advancements in SFX makeup over the past two decades since he last played the blue-skinned mutant.
“I had some makeup tests already,” Cumming said during a Friday appearance on Today with Jenna & Friends. “It was like four and a half to five hours [of makeup] before, and now it’s 90 minutes.”

Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday will be packed with our favorite heroes and villains, and while many of them are returning characters that we’ve seen in recent movies, there’s one who will be coming back after more than two decades—Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler!
Fans first met him in 2003’s X2: X-Men United as the demonic-looking mutant with teleporting abilities. Even though he was not able to reprise the role in future sequels, he still became a memorable character.

Now, Marvel is bringing back the nostalgia with the Scottish star painting his skin blue once again.
Alan Cumming officially returns as Nightcrawler in Avengers: Doomsday
If there’s anything immediately noticeable about Nightcrawler, it is the scary-looking appearance brought by his dark blue complexion and terrifying eyes. To achieve this look, the makeup department would spend almost five hours painting Alan Cumming’s skin.

Alan Cumming's Nightcrawler was only ever in one X-Men film, the 2003 outing X2: X-Men United. Yet his comparatively short amount of screentime didn't stop him becoming a fan favorite, and now he's back for more.
Cumming was one of the names announced for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, meaning it's time for the actor to get back under Nightcrawler's blue skin. But that's not always an easy task. Actors in superhero movies have long lamented having to spend hours in the makeup chair doing nothing while their skin is poked at and prodded. But Cumming has already had a go with new Nightcrawler makeup, and he's delighted.
“Isn’t it nuts? I’m excited and amazed,” Cumming said on a Today With Jenna and Friends interview, via Variety. “It’s been 23 years since I was a superhero. I’ve had some makeup tests already for the role, but what...

Alan Cumming is returning to the role of Nightcrawler in Avengers: Doomsday, more than two decades after his first and only appearance as the character in X2: X-Men United. The actor revealed that recent makeup tests have shown a significant reduction in preparation time, citing improvements in prosthetic techniques and application methods.
Cumming shared his thoughts during appearances on Today With Jenna and Friends and in conversation with Olivia Munn for Collider. “It’s been 23 years since I was a superhero,” he said. “I’ve had some makeup tests already for the role, but what’s great about it was that before it was about four and a half hours to apply it, but now it’s only 90 minutes.”

What a difference two decades make. Alan Cumming recently said during an interview on “Today With Jenna and Friends” that he’s already begun makeup tests for “Avengers: Doomsday.” He is reprising his “X2: X-Men United” role of Nightcrawler in the upcoming Marvel tentpole, alongside fellow “X-Men” co-stars Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn and Kelsey Grammer. Cumming said advancements in movie makeup have dramatically cut back the amount of time he’ll spend transforming into the blue-skinned and tattooed Nightcrawler.

Of all the actors announced as being part of last week's massive Avengers: Doomsday's cast reveal live-stream, Alan Cumming might have been the most surprising.
Cumming made his one and only appearance in 20th Century Fox's X-Men franchise as Kurt Wagner, aka Nightcrawler, in X2, but declined the studio's offer to reprise the role for the third film because he had no interest in sitting through the arduous makeup process again.
Wagner didn't show up in again until Kodi Smit-McPhee took over as a younger take on the character in X-Men: Apocalypse.
There's been some speculation that Cumming may only be lending his voice to a fully CG take on Nightcrawler, but the actor has now confirmed that this will not be the case, as he's already done a makeup test.
"Isn't it nuts? I'm excited and amazed," Cumming tells Collider when asked about his return for Doomsday.

One of the X-Men’s most beloved mutants is back — and this time, he's not spending half the day in a makeup chair. Alan Cumming, who famously played the teleporting, German-accented Nightcrawler in X2: X-Men United, is reprising his role in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsdayand he was thrilled to confirm that one of his most hated parts of shooting a Marvel movie has been mercifully shortened due to advancements in technology.
Speaking to hosts Jenna Bush Hager and fellow X-Men alum Olivia Munn, Cumming opened up on his excitement at reprising the role almost a quarter of a century later, while revealing that the makeup application — which he was a vocal critic of last time around — has become much more streamlined. This, said Cumming, was a key factor in his return.

The world of the Marvel Universe is highly intriguing, for it is filled with incredible characters, unbelievable locations, ruthless villains, and extraordinary tech. It also has fictional metals that have led to whole discourses and debates about them. Among these many metals, few are as legendary and hotly debated as adamantium and vibranium.
Both existing in the Marvel Universe, these metals have long captivated fans for decades due to their extraordinary properties and unique applications. While adamantium is famously associated with Wolverine’s indestructible claws and skeleton, vibranium is the core element of Captain America’s iconic red, blue, and white shield and the reason for Wakanda’s technological advancements. Even though both metals are unique and important in their own special ways, the question of which metal is superior has sparked intense discussions among Marvelholics for decades.

Halle Berry told Black Girl Nerds at CinemaCon that comic book movie fans should not expect to see her name called among the cast for Marvel’s “Avengers: Doomsday.” Several of Berry’s original “X-Men” co-stars were announced as part of the “Doomsday” cast earlier this month, much to the surprise of fans. Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, Alan Cumming and Kelsey Grammer are all coming back. So what about Berry?
“Fans want to see your name on the chair for the next next announcement of ‘Avengers: Doomsday,'” a reporter for Black Girl Nerds told Berry, alluding to the “Doomsday” livestream announcement where each cast member’s name was revealed on the back of a director’s chair. “We didn’t see Storm. We want to see your name”
“Keep waiting,” Berry answered. “It’s not going to be there. It’s not going to be there.

Halle Berry cast doubt that she will reprise her role as Storm in Avengers: Doomsday, but is she being honest or trying to hide the reveal? The Avengers: Doomsday five-hour livestream was filled with surprises, including seven different X-Men members as a significant talking point. With all signs pointing to Avengers: Doomsday being a stealth Avengers vs. X-Men film, the exclusion of names like Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Famke Janssen as Jean Grey, and Halle Berry as Storm was notable.
During Cinema Con, The Associated Press asked Halle Berry if she would reprise her role as Storm in Avengers: Doomsday. The interviewer told Berry they hope to see her name on a chair in the next announcement that Marvel Studios has teased. The Academy Award-winning actress responded with a laugh and said:
"Well, keep waiting because it's not going to be there. [Laughs] It's not going to be there."

On X (formerly Twitter), Marvel Studios revealed the impressive lead cast of Avengers: Doomsday, slated for release in 2026. The new movie will mark the first time the titular team has assembled since 2019's Avengers: Endgame. With several of Earth's mightiest heroes now either deceased or retired, the new movie will feature a new Avengers roster, presumably led by Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson as the McU's new Captain America. However, the Avengers aren't the only heroes set to appear in Doomsday, as they will be crossing paths with other teams of heroes from their universe and beyond.

Some names, like Vanessa Kirby, Pedro Pascal, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn, were expected, especially considering Fantastic Four history with Doctor Doom. However, the biggest shock came when former X-Men stars like Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart were revealed to be reprising their iconic roles, alongside James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, and Alan Cumming.

Alan Cumming has us all excited with his latest Instagram video. The Scottish actor, known for his vibrant personality, is stepping back into the blue skin of Nightcrawler for Marvel’s upcoming blockbuster ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. Dressed in a festive Christmas hat and a cozy scarf, he’s hopping around what looks like his own home, showing off some playful energy that’s got everyone talking.
The big news dropped recently when Marvel confirmed Cumming would return as the teleporting mutant he first played over 20 years ago in ‘X2: X-Men United’. A transformation is coming to Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox). In a new slate of set photos from Daredevil: Born Again, a little spoiler from the series' upcoming Season 2 episodes was revealed, but fans are happy to know it. The photos reveal that the superhero will don his famous black outfit for the first time in the series. At this point, we don't know in which episode this will happen, but Cox's face with the mask off confirms that it's indeed part of his storyline. Season 1 of the series is still rolling out new episodes on Disney+.
The Dd on Matt's chest is a big development because Marvel fans have noticed its absence in the red suit that the protagonist wore ever since the series first debuted on Netflix. The red suit from the show is considered fairly accurate, but the D's are a defining element from the comic books that fans missed.

In a five-and-a-half-hour live stream on Wednesday, Marvel revealed its initial lineup for “Avengers: Doomsday,” set to hit theaters in 2026. And, beyond the length of the announcement itself, there were a few other surprises in the group.
The reveal came in the form of a camera slowly panning outward, roughly every 15 minute, in a massive hangar, revealing cast chairs with the names of the stars one at a time. In total, there were 26 names revealed — though insiders say there are more surprises to come — and for the most part, it was who fans expected.
Still, as Marvel is prone to do, there were a few big surprises in there (though none as big as the reveal at San Diego Comic-Con last year that Robert Downey Jr. would be returning to the franchise as Doctor Doom).
Here were some of the biggest surprises.

There may soon be a new most tenured member of the Marvel universe. With the announcement today that Patrick Stewart would be returning to the MCU as Professor Charles Xavier alongside his fellow X-Men in next year's Avengers: Doomsday, the Star Trek icon is positioned to take the crown as the longest-serving character actor in Marvel's on-screen history. He'll have played Professor X for 26 years across eight films by the time the big crossover film comes out next May, with his debut coming in 2000 in the original X-Men. However, his usurping of the position isn't guaranteed, as it relies on Hugh Jackman, who kicked off his tenure as Wolverine alongside Stewart in the mutant film, not appearing in the latest Avengers.
Stewart and Jackman have traded the title of most tenured Marvel character actor a couple of times in recent years. Before Doomsday, the former most recently enjoyed a...
