“The Princess and the Frog” actress Anika Noni Rose is “disappointed” in Disney after the IP did not get its happily ever after, as promised.
Rose was set to reprise her lead voiceover role as Princess Tiana for an eponymous Disney+ sequel series. The show was announced in 2020, more than a decade after “The Princess and the Frog” debuted in 2009. In March 2025, “Tiana” was officially scrapped by the streamer; a source told IndieWire that the series went through several different creative teams, and the production costs were too high to continue. In lieu of the series, a short-form project titled “Tiana Special Event” is now in the works for Disney+.
“I too am deeply disappointed that the continuation of Tiana’s journey in series form has been cut short,” Rose wrote on social media. “The series was a long time coming, and a lot of beautiful work was put into...

Anika Noni Rose is “deeply disappointed” after Disney scrapped its planned “Princess and the Frog” television series for Disney+ after years in development. The series, titled “Tiana,” was first announced in 2020. Joyce Sherri joined the project in 2023 as its lead writer and director. Rose was set to reprise the title princess, who she first voiced in the 2009 animated film. News broke earlier this month that “Tiana” had been axed as a series. A short-form project based on “The Princess and the Frog” is now being developed for Disney+.
“I too am deeply disappointed that the continuation of Tiana’s journey in series form has been cut short,” Rose wrote on Instagram. “The series was a long time coming, and a lot of beautiful work was put into it by all of the creatives involved, including but not limited to long time champion Jenn Lee, our wonderful writer/director Joyce Sherri,...

When Will Finn's and John Standford's animated musical Western "Home on the Range" was released, it came with an elegiac announcement. Disney, you see, had been struggling throughout the early 2000s. The 1990s renaissance was over, and much of the studio's more recent output was either failing critically or commercially. Films like "Fantasia 2000," "The Emperor's New Groove," and "Atlantis: The Lost Empire" were only modest successes, while films like "Dinosaur" and "Brother Bear" were coming and going without much notice. The studio's clunky sci-fi epic "Treasure Planet" notoriously lost buckets of money, which didn't inspire confidence. It didn't help that DreamWorks was attracting huge animation audiences with films like "Shrek" — a notoriously anti-Disney movie.
As such, to appear competitive, Disney announced that "Home on the Range" was going to be the studio's last-ever traditionally hand-drawn feature film. After that, it was to be 100% CGI. Animation purists panicked, feeling...

Disney Cancels the Sequel to 1 of the Best Animated Movies of the 2000s After 5 Years of Development
The Princess and the Frog sequel series has been scrapped at Disney+. Titled Tiana, the streaming exclusive would have brought back Anika Noni Rose as the voice of Disney's first Black princess, Tiana.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Walt Disney Animation Studios has officially pulled the plug on Tiana as it abandons making original long-form content for Disney+. Sources close to the project revealed that despite best efforts, including several changes to the creative team, the animation studio couldn't get Tiana where it needed to be given its budget. The decision to scrap Tiana in its entirety comes as a bit of a surprise, given that Disney recently found success at the box office with Moana 2, which was announced alongside Tiana back in 2020 as a Disney+ series before ultimately being reworked into a feature-length animated sequel.

The studio was struggling to make the transition from hand-drawn animation to CGI at the time, and Bolt gave the studio the boost it needed. Since the earliest days of cinema, the Western genre has produced some of the richest and most adventurous films in the cinema. These movies document the lives and journeys of characters of varying moral codes who try to survive the brutal Frontier, taking on rival gunslingers, Native American warriors, and the harsh environment. Despite the genre's reputation for gritty stories, plenty of Westerns are accessible to younger viewers.
While Westerns work best when they take a gritty approach to the Old West, there are plenty of movies from the genre perfect for kids that play up adventure instead of violence. From classic swashbuckler heroes of the Western Frontier to animated gunslinger stories, the list of kid-friendly Western movies is surprisingly long. The Wild West remains a place for childhood escapism; these movies are great examples.

The 1990s saw Hollywood studios make a rush to 3D animation in the wake of Toy Story. But in the process, it abandoned decades of hand drawn artistry.
When Ron Clements and John Musker got the greenlight to make The Princess And The Frog at Walt Disney Animation Studios, they faced a problem.
Appreciating some hand-drawn animation had been done for the slightly earlier Disney production, Enchanted, remarkably Disney had to outsource those segments as it didn’t have the internal resources to bring them to life. When it then decided to attempt a hand drawn animated film for the first time in over a decade, the apparatus to do so was all but gone.
“They had gotten rid of many of the machines, even the animation desk that had lightboards in them,” co-director John Musker told me on the press tour for The Princess And The Frog in 2009. “They...

The Walt Disney Company has been through many eras. Its most famous, the so-called “Disney Renaissance,” spanned the breadth of the 1990s. This period was marked by instant classics like Hercules, The Lion King, and The Little Mermaid. The studio’s animation department flourished as it produced hit after hit. What followed is informally dubbed the “post-renaissance.” These films tend to be less known and rarely fall into the beloved musical comedy niche, but they’re no less remarkable than their predecessors.
In fact, it can be argued that one of the early post-renaissance Disney works should qualify as part of the animation studio’s Renaissance lineup. Brother Bear hit theaters at the beginning of 2003’s holiday season. Like its early relatives, the film is a musical comedy with lush visuals and a compelling story. By the end of its theatrical run, Brother Bear pulled in $250 million against its $46 million budget,...

Disney is renowned for its animation, but the company has still seen animated movies flop at the box office. Many of the early best Disney animated movies performed well enough at the box office, while the biggest flops came in the company's later years. This is likely due to a myriad of factors, including basic inflation meaning a greater loss. Disney also has more box office flops after the rise of 3D animation, possibly due to an increase in animated blockbusters in general, meaning more competition and higher standards.
Many box office flops become cult classics, animated Disney movies included. This reflects how the marketability and advertising strategy may not be the best representation of a movie's quality. The most underrated Disney movies are generally not the highest earners but still deserve the attention of the Disney fanbase. Jeremy Renner as Mike McLusky in ‘Mayor of Kingstown’ (Credit: Eric Ogden/Paramount+)
Mike McLusky (Jeremy Renner) will continue to try and keep the peace in a town ripped apart by gangs in Mayor of Kingstown season four. Paramount+ officially renewed the drama for a fourth season, but didn’t confirm when production will get underway or a target premiere date for the new season.
Season three, filmed after Renner’s horrific accident, claimed the number one spot as Paramount+’s top series during its run, pulling in 8.8 million households.
In addition to Renner as Mike McLusky, season three starred Hugh Dillon as Ian, Taylor Handley as Kyle McLusky, Emma Laird as Iris, and Tobi Bamtefa as Deverin ‘Bunny’ Washington. Derek Webster played Stevie, Hamish Allan-Headley starred as Robert, Nishi Munshi played Tracy, and Michael Beach played Captain Kareem Moore. Some obviously won’t return as their characters met untimely deaths in the third season.

“Spellbound,” now on Netflix, is an animated fairytale about a princess from a far away land (voiced by Rachel Zegler) whose parents (Javier Bardem and Nicole Kidman) are mysterious turned into monsters. That premise starts young princess Ellian on a journey – to not only break the spell, but to also figure out what turned her parents into monsters in the first place.
And putting some spring in her step along the way are a collection of killer tunes from Alan Menken and Glenn Slater, the songwriting team behind Disney gems like “Tangled” and “Home on the Range”.

The two most expensive Western movies ever made were also massive box office flops, and there's a fairly simple reason why. Low budgets are almost baked into the Western genre, all that a good Western needs is a few talented actors, natural scenery, intense gunfights, and a well-written story. Some of the best Western movies ever made were made on a shoestring budget. An entire subset of the genre - Spaghetti Westerns - was known for being extraordinarily cheap. Not all Westerns, however, have managed to keep costs down, and two of them got so expensive they were basically destined to flop.
Westerns are no strangers to failure at the box office, particularly after Westerns became unpopular after the 1970s. There's a long list of great Westerns that bombed at the box office, and a lot of Western flops have been a product of the genre's constantly changing popularity. The...

In 1994, David Geffen, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and Steven Spielberg -- three of Hollywood's biggest power players -- united to form a brand-new major motion picture studio called DreamWorks, something that hadn't been attempted in decades. The trio of execs had three stipulations: they wouldn't make any more than nine films a year, they would be allowed to make movies for other studios, and they would be able to go home in time for dinner.
For three years, the trio would wrangle contracts and make deals with various music, film, and television entities to make sure it was standing on solid ground and could handle being the outsize business entity they wanted it to be. In 1997, DreamWorks finally released its first three movies: "The Peacemaker," "Amistad," and "Mouse Hunt." The year after, the studio broke into feature animation with the bad-but-popular CGI insect film "Antz" and the highly acclaimed and very good "The Prince of Egypt,...

When composer Alan Menken first joined the animated film “Spellbound,” the prospect of writing the score and songs felt “exciting and terrifying at the same time” because the story “defied a formulaic approach.” It is a sentiment that his collaborator and lyricist Glenn Slater echoes, because “while this has the form of a fairytale story, it’s actually a much bigger story than your typical fairytale.” The new Netflix movie centers on Princess Ellian, whose parents have been inexplicably transformed into gigantic monsters. The lyricist continues, “It’s an allegory for a family dynamic that many, many families go through.” Watch our complete video interview above.
Menken and Slater are frequent collaborators, having preciously worked on films “Tangled” and “Home on the Range,” TV series “Galavant,” and Broadway musicals “The Little Mermaid” and “Sister Act” together. 2004's Home on the Range was meant to be Disney's final hand-drawn film in their long history of dominating traditional animation at the box office. The movie starred Roseanne Barr, Dame Judi Dench, and Jennifer Tilly as three cows attempting to save their small farm from ruin. Home on the Range came during a very transitional time for the Walt Disney Company. Computer animation was slowly becoming the new hot tool for cartoon movie-making and CEO Michael Eisner was on the verge of being ousted from a company he led through a successful Renaissance Era in the 1990s. A year prior, Roy E. Disney (nephew of Walt Disney) had also resigned from his positions as Chairman of the Board and Vice Chairman of Feature Animation due to his displeasure with the company.

This article contains spoilers for the "Toy Story" movies.
When John Lasseter's "Toy Story" was released in 1995, it was a coup for the industry. CGI had been used in films for a decade and there were myriad computer-animated short films, but the first theatrically released, fully-computer-animated feature changed the landscape. It certainly helped that "Toy Story" was a massive success, raking in over $365 million on a mere $30 million budget. The film was also highly acclaimed, sporting a novel concept (your toys are alive when you aren't looking), an excellent screenplay, and a first-rate cast.
After "Toy Story," it felt like the floodgates opened, and a shift from traditionally animated features to fully computer-animated features occurred within the next five years. One might even recall when Disney announced that it would be shuttering its traditional animation studio and only make computer-animated features going forward. This was slightly before its 2004 film "Home on the Range" flopped.

The following contains major spoilers for Mayor of Kingstown Season 3, Episode 9, "Home on the Range," now streaming on Paramount+. It also contains descriptions of violence and strong language.
Mayor of Kingstown Season 3 has been a mixed bag for Paramount+ viewers. Some episodes are outstanding, while others wander off track and make things more confusing. Season 3, Episode 9, "Home on the Range" is a combination of both -- it's a suspenseful episode, but it also just creates an even less clear narrative going into the season and potentially series finale.
"Home on the Range" largely centers on Raphael, who makes a surprisingly easy escape out of custody in order to see Roe and Trey one last time. Mike uses Raphael's escape as a way to continue playing everyone off one another, hoping that he can fix everything as he always does. But the final few minutes throw two major monkey wrenches into the plot.

Disney’s animated ventures were in a rough patch in the 2000s. The outfit that had earlier delivered Aladdin and The Lion King to the world was now responsible for films like Home on the Range and Dinosaur. Box office bombs were common for the studio while Disney executives were brewing up a contentious relationship with the only Mouse House animation division (Pixar) producing hits for the studio. Even cheaply-made animated titles made outside of Walt Disney Animation Studios weren’t very profitable for the outfit. In that particular class of movies was a January 2004 release adapted from a popular Disney Channel cartoon about a dog who dresses up like a human boy to attend his adolescent owner’s elementary school.

If there’s one film company that everyone’s heard of, that’s The Walt Disney Company. Since its inception in 1923, Disney has been breaking new ground in the American animation industry. Disney broke out into the world of feature film animation in 1937 with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. But despite being groundbreaking at the time, the method of animation used for classic Disney films has become outdated. While Disney is most known for some of their classic 2D animations like Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King, Disney's last 2D animated films were The Princess & The Frog, released in 2009, and Winnie the Pooh in 2011.
While this departure from hand-drawn 2D animation seemed like the end of an era for some Disney fans — who might, in fact, still want Disney's next movie to be 2D — others were glad to see a total switch to 3D, moving on to make hits like Tangled,...

With this year being the 100 year anniversary of The Walt Disney Company and the release of their latest animated title, Wish, we wanted to know what animated Disney film has been your favorite over the years? We stuck to films specifically released by Disney, so no Pixar titles are included. What struck me while compiling the list is the progression of their films. From the innocence of their early work to what many consider their heyday in the early 90’s to the emergence of the CGI era. For many of us, Disney films defined our youth, but which is the one that has remained with you all these years? As always, if you don’t see your favorite listed, please click “Other” and let us know what it is in the comments section as well as any fond memories you have of these timeless classics.

The history of Walt Disney Animation Studios is one full of extreme highs, but also equally precarious lows. You cannot have your Frozen or The Jungle Book without also going through titles like Home on the Range or The Black Cauldron. In 2008, Walt Disney Animation Studios was in the middle of those dark times, with the outfit being constantly outmatched by fellow Disney entities Pixar and other animation entities. John Lasseter and Ed Catmull, leaders of Pixar Animation Studios, were installed as the heads of this division in 2006 in the wake of Disney purchasing Pixar in the hopes that they could turn this label around. One of the first titles released under their watch was the story of a Hollywood hound by the name of Bolt.

This year marks Disney’s 100th anniversary as an animation studio, and they’ve decided to celebrate the occasion by taking several of their classic characters and throw them all together into the same film for one magical story. That, at least, is what Wish is supposed to be—if you squint hard enough. The film plays incredibly coy with its portrayal of its classical Disney archetypes and tropes, choosing to take recognizable characters and their trademark traits and transpose them onto ancillary characters with only seconds of screen time.
What Zack Snyder did to DC Comics is what Wish does to Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, and that’s extremely odd for a studio so surgically effective at fracking its own nostalgia to new audiences. That wouldn’t be such a knock against Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn’s film had it turned out to have a life and vibrancy all its own.

The movie centers on a teenage girl who makes a wish to save her kingdom from doom, with the company's iconic wishing star as a key character. As of now, Wish has a Rotten score of 58%, the first time a Walt Disney Animation Studios movie has received such a low rating since 2005's Chicken Little.

The Princess and the Frog was Disney's return to traditional animation after a five-year hiatus following Home on the Range. Directed by the legendary duo of John Musker and Ron Clements, the film is a modern adaptation of the classic tale The Frog Prince, giving it a modern twist by setting it in 1920s New Orleans. Sadly, it didn't make as much money as Disney was hoping, and coupled with the success of Tangled, the company ceased producing 2D animated films following Winnie the Pooh.

Since the medium of animation has been primarily dominated by family comedies, fairy tale fantasies, and poppy musicals for most of its history, animated Westerns have been few and far between, especially in recent years. While films like Disney’s Home on the Range, DreamWorks’ Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, and Steven Spielberg’s An American Tail: Fievel Goes West use the genre as a source for parodies and aesthetic inspiration, seldom has there been an animated Western true to the genre’s themes and conventional tropes. Shows like Samurai Jack and Avatar: The Last Airbender have also explored the thematic and archetypal elements found in classic American Westerns, but have done so in ways so far aesthetically detached from the traditional Western genre to the point that they are almost unrecognizable. While the Western has been largely absent from blockbuster cinema in general over the past decade, director Gore Verbinski...

If Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was “the one that started it all,” Home on the Range was (briefly) “the one that ended it all” for Walt Disney Animation Studios. Released in April 2004, this title was briefly most famous for being the last-ever hand-drawn animated title from this studio. 2D animation had put Disney on the map back in the 1930s, but Mouse House bosses at the start of the 21st century felt the art form was no longer relevant to modern moviegoers. With this development, animation houses were shut down, artists were put out of work, and Home on the Range suddenly became a way more historically important project than anyone could’ve imagined.

Since the Writers Guild of American and Screen Actors Guild are both still on strike, this year's Destination D23 convention down in Orlando, Florida didn't really have much of anything to showcase. But there was one other announcement that might be intriguing for anyone who is both a Disney fan and a physical media collector.

Disney is releasing a limited edition box set of 100 animated movies to celebrate their 100th anniversary, priced at $1,500. The box set includes classics like Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, as well as newer films like Encanto and Turning Red. While the price may seem steep, the box set comes with bonus collectibles and is a comprehensive collection that would be difficult and costly to build on one's own.
The price tag for Disney's new DVD collection set that contains 100 animated movies has been set at a hefty $1,500. With Disney's 100th anniversary set on October 16, the renowned company has been celebrating the milestone all through the year. The Disney theme parks began the official celebration by kicking off Disney 100 in January, a series of special events taking place in parks across the globe all year long. However, Disney will soon offer a way to bring part of the celebration into audiences' own homes.

From the moment “Home On The Range” became the defining song of the American West, accusations of plagiarism over its lyrics cast a shadow over its success. Dr. Brewster Higley was eventually credited with the poem that became the eternal hit, and while it’s now the state song of Kansas, there was a time when Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico all made claims for the tune as their own. When New York rocker Wendy (Carrie Hamilton) arrives in Tokyo, she winds up working as a hostess in a karaoke bar, despondently singing that very tune to a room full of enthusiastic (and drunk) Japanese salarymen.

2022's Strange World had the ignominious fate of officially ending Disney Animation's CinemaScore ratings streak by scoring lower than any film in 31 years. Directed by Don Hall and Qui Nguyen and written by Nguyen, Strange World was the third major animated feature to be released by Disney in 2022 after Pixar’s Turning Red and Lightyear. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Jaboukie Young-White, Gabrielle Union, Dennis Quaid, and Lucy Liu, and Jonathan Melo, Strange World brings viewers into the fold of a new adventure and story centered on a family of explorers.
Strange World reviews from critics presented mixed opinions about the pulp adventure flick, which led to a Disney tradition being broken. The market research firm CinemaScore, which polls theater audiences after seeing the movie, has revealed that Strange World received a B, making it the first ever Walt Disney Animation Studios film to score below an A- according to CinemaScore's metrics.

According to Empire, Rob Marshall's "The Little Mermaid" -- a live-action/CGI remake of John Musker and Ron Clements' 1989 animated film of the same name -- will feature a brand new song called "For the First Time," to be sung by the titular mermaid Ariel (Halle Bailey) as she makes her first sojourn onto dry land after being transformed into a human. It was co-penned by Disney legend and award-winning songwriter Alan Menken, the Egot maestro who co-wrote the songs for the animated "Little Mermaid" movie with Howard Ashman, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, the Broadway superstar and songwriter behind the Disney-released animated films "Moana" and "Encanto."

Mrs. Potts, Mufasa, Quasimodo, and Kuzco. These are just a few characters that Disney animator Phillip Young helped bring to life.
