Very boring but "Loffe" shines bright.

I was almost certain that I would hate this movie when I started watching it. Well, now I'm certain that I would hate this movie if it wasn't for one redeeming factor: Janne "Loffe" Carlsson. Anyone who doesn't know much about Swedish movies will have absolutely no idea of who he is what so ever, but take my word for it, he is just simply lovable. He plays his role in such a way that you just can't dislike the movie, even if you really want to and I'm sure you'll want to, because besides Loffe's superb acting, there's really nothing here to recommend, most supporting actors are bad, many characters are seriously underdeveloped and to top it off the story is both sentimental and boring, this movie is, however, worth seeing for "Loffe" alone.

Long live "Loffe"!

Return of the "Loffe"

The plot is uncomplicated, to say the least. This is the "Death of a Salesman"-syndrome, however light years away from Arthur Miller's masterpiece and not THAT tragic. This is a Swedish comedy, with the heart on the right place, but it's really a little odd having a rather old man being the hero and his tragedy being the main subject.

I don't know if anyone outside Sweden is reading this, except for the IMDb people. Maybe one should explain that the main actor here, Jan "Loffe" Carlsson is a well-known Swedish "clown" in many entertaining circumstances since the late 60s. But he is doing fine here, making his character really believeable and without Loffe, this piece would have fallen down to earth and hadn't deserved much mentioning.

The fear of leaving things behind

It begins a bit unstable and with some wooden acting but once the story gets going it's heartwarming and well-written. The chemistry between the two lead actors is good and it contains some strong memorable scenes here and there. At times it can get too melodramatic but fortunately those are few. It's a solid, well-written, well-acted movie about age problems. Even though this is about a man entering his sixties, and tries to deal with the fact that he's getting old, I think younger persons can find something useful in this too. After all, there are many age crisis in life and if you go beneath the surface they're all about the same thing. The fear that you haven't done all you should have, and the fear of leaving things behind. It's not a perfect ten, but it's a darn good movie!
