Le Fantôme de l'espace (1966)
Adult Swim: The First 13 Shows To Air On Cartoon Network’s Late-Night Program Block
Le Fantôme de l'espace (1966)
Since children often go to sleep on the earlier side, channels targeting them needed to find something else to air late at night. Nickelodeon had Nick at Nite and Disney had Vault Disney which aired both adult content and vintage programming. In 2001, competing children’s channel, Cartoon Network, decided to enter into the late-night programming game with Adult Swim, which kicked-off each night saying “All kids out of the pool”. However, unlike its competitors, Adult Swim aired mostly original shows and like its home-network, only offered animated series. Many of their shows were parodies based on the 1960s Hanna-Barbera cartoon, Space Ghost including Space Ghost Coast to Coast, The Brak Show, and Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, all of which are currently available for streaming on HBOMax.

There was a certain point in history, somewhere between The Simpsons and Daria, when TV animation ceased to be the sole provenance of kids drooling over their morning bowls of Lucky Charms. What began as a freaky little block of late-night programming has evolved into a vast, even-freakier universe of animated and live-action series with a sardonic, absurdist sense of humor that's...

The Week In Geek: 'Sucker Punch,' 'Cowboy Ninja Viking' Take a Kitchen Sink Approach
Filed under: Columns, Sci-Fi, Cinematical

Movies are becoming turducken. Not content to be just turkey, the turkey is stuffed with a duck. And that duck? Stuffed with roast chicken. Three meats, perfectly tasty in their own right, frankensteined together into a poultry monstrosity that is ever so slowly becoming an honest-to-goodness Holiday tradition. It's overkill; to paraphrase 'The Brak Show' it's "death by deliciosity."

When I first saw the trailer for Zack Snyder's upcoming 'Sucker Punch' I thought it looked like a Pussycat Dolls' music video, only with dragons. And samurai. And Nazis. And did I see a zombie in there? There's a brand new trailer now, released just this week, with a little bit more of the story revealed (a girl in an asylum lives out her escape plan through a mental fantasy -- maybe?), but it's still a hodge-podge of images from adolescent geek playground.

Manufactured On Demand DVDs – Adult Swim Shop
Adult Swim, which is typically written this way, [adult swim], to give personality to the title, is part of Cartoon Network. It’s primarily dedicated to animated TV shows that are for adults and not for kids. That’s not to say that the content is obscene necessarily, but the humor is directed to a more sophisticated audience. By making use of innovative DVD publishing technology, Adult Swim brings its consumers Adult Swim Shop (adultswimshop.com) for manufactured on demand DVD purchasing. Now all the zany and sometimes demented cartoons that are on or have been on adult are available to customers through Adult Swim Shop. There are a few non-cartoon titles.

Some of the titles that Adult Swim Shop offers are: Aqua Teen Hunger Force, The Brak Show, Frisky Dingo, 12 oz. Mouse, Harvey Birdman, Metalocalypse, The Mighty Boosh, Moral Orel, Robot Chicken, Sealab 2021, Space Ghost and Space Ghost Coast To Coast.

'Weird Al' Yankovic at an event for The 57th Annual Grammy Awards (2015)
Weird Al Yankovic lands deal with Cartoon Network
'Weird Al' Yankovic at an event for The 57th Annual Grammy Awards (2015)
Comedian and Kenny G lookalike "Weird Al" Yankovic has inked a deal to direct and star in a live-action TV movie for Cartoon Network. Sadly, it's not a sequel to his 1989 cult classic Uhf, so don't expect to see Michael Richards tossing poodles out of a ten-story window again.

Yankovic was nice enough to interview himself about the project on his personal blog. He's keeping mum about the movie's plot details, but he revealed that the film's protagonist would be a teenager. Yankovic also said he'd take on a supporting role.

If the film is able to draw an audience, it's likely that Cartoon Network will develop it or another Weird Al project into a live-action series. The network already has a working relationship with Yankovic thanks to his voice work on The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, The Brak Show, and Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job.

'Weird Al' Yankovic at an event for The 57th Annual Grammy Awards (2015)
Weird Al Directing Live-Action Feature (No, It's Not 'Uhf 2')
'Weird Al' Yankovic at an event for The 57th Annual Grammy Awards (2015)
Smells like nerd comedian-musician-parodist extraordinaire "Weird Al" Yankovic will be diving into his first feature-length directing gig for the Cartoon Network, where he's already established himself as an animated presence on shows like The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, The Brak Show, and Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job. Yankovic broke the news earlier today on his own blog, where he preempted the inevitable media queries about his unnamed project by interviewing himself.

"Have you already written the script?

Yes -- in fact, I'm about to start the third draft. It needs to be fine-tuned a bit more and it hasn't been officially green-lit yet, but it's gotten some very positive buzz at the network.

Is is going to be a sequel to Uhf?

Sorry, no.

Is it going to be a documentary about Winston Churchill?

Again, no.

Is it going to be funny?

Well, that's the intention."

More after the jump.

Midway swims with Cartoon Network
Midway Games announced Tuesday that it has signed a multiterritory agreement with Cartoon Network to publish video games based on five of the network's Adult Swim programs and three of its top-rated children's programs. Under the terms of the deals, which went through Cartoon Network's sibling company Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Midway secures multiterritory rights to develop and publish games for the console, hand-held and PC platforms. Adult Swim is the network's late-night programming block of animation that targets on an older -- if not necessarily mature -- audience. The shows included in the Midway deal are: Aqua Teen Hunger Force, The Brak Show, Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, Sealab 2021 and Space Ghost Coast to Coast.
