Despite being released in its native country almost 12 months ago, The Pokémon Company has left fans outside of Japan hanging in regards to a potential localization of Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution.
The film, a CGI reimagining – but not quite a frame-for-frame remake – of the original 1999 pic that helped kickstart Pokéfever, stars series protagonist Ash Ketchum in the early days of his career alongside companions Brock and Misty. After receiving a mysterious message calling for a convergence of the world’s strongest Trainers, the trio heads to New Island to compete, only to discover that the gathering for a supposed tournament is, in fact, a ruse masterminded by Mewtwo.
We won’t reveal any further plot details (like you don’t already know what happens anyway), but suffice it to say that The Pokémon Company was responsible for theatres full of weeping children back in the 90s when that scene...

One of the most powerful moments in Marriage Story comes when Adam Driver's character, Charlie, reflects on his failed marriage in an impromptu performance of "Being Alive." If you're wondering if that really is Driver singing, then you'll be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is! Driver tackles the famous Stephen Sondheim song from the musical Company without any assistance or dubbing.
"Where Noah [Baumbach] put it in the script I thought was really beautiful writing," Driver said in a Q&a, per IndieWire. "The two characters started in this polar opposite journey. Before the movie starts, Scarlett [Johansson's character] has already made a decision. She's executing for the first half and building herself and reclaiming the thing she thinks she lost. Whereas Charlie, a director, who is so used to being in control, is now on the back foot. He's playing catch up, and it's not until this spontaneous moment happens...

Abbott & Costello – The Complete
Universal Pictures Collection
Blu ray
Shout! Factory
1940-1955/1:33-1:85
Starring Bud Abbott, Lou Costello, Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff
Directed by Arthur Lubin, Erle C. Kenton, Charles Barton
Two footloose Jersey boys with no particular place to go, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello finally found themselves – literally and figuratively – on the burlesque stage. Their act, equal parts smart talk and ancient slapstick, was honed alongside curvy chorus girls and tassel-twirlers but it took a lady of a decidedly different stature to make them superstars. On March 24, 1938, Kate Smith, “The First Lady of Radio”, invited them to perform “Who’s On First”, a routine delivered with such hairpin curve precision it left listeners breathless. That appearance fast-tracked the duo to their own radio series and a contract with Universal Pictures.

Adam Driver on the Meaning Behind His Heartbreaking Stephen Sondheim Performance in ‘Marriage Story’
Certainly one of the most emotional centerpieces in Noah Baumbach’s devastating divorce drama “Marriage Story” is Adam Driver breaking down and singing Stephen Sondheim’s “Being Alive” at a piano bar. The moment arrives near the end of the film — which is now in theaters and hits Netflix on December 6 — and it offers a poignant window into Driver’s character Charlie’s state of mind at the end of a bitter separation from his estranged wife Nicole (Scarlett Johansson), who has left their New York life to pursue acting in Los Angeles.
At a recent Screen Actors Guild Q&a moderated by IndieWire Editor-at-Large Anne Thompson, Driver, joined by his castmates, explained the origins of the scene. The song “Being Alive” comes from Sondheim’s 1970 show “Company,” which revolves around a man struggling with commitment.
“Where Noah put it in the script I thought was really beautiful writing,” Driver said.

Noah Baumbach has made a career of dramatic comedies inspired by facets of his own life. He’s been writing bits and pieces of “Marriage Story” for years, and spent many hours discussing it with his go-to leading man Adam Driver. While they were in post on “The Meyerowitz Stories,” Baumbach decided he was ready to fulfill two goals: To make “Marriage Story,” and to end a movie with Driver singing “Being Alive” from Stephen Sondheim’s “Company.”
“I’d heard him sing,” he told me. “It’s good because it’s human. I wanted the song to have the same function songs do in musicals: the character arrives at another place by the end of the song. It’s story and character. This material offered many hidden and not so hidden genres in it: comedy, horror, thriller, court procedural, love story, musical.”

“Somebody crowd me with love. Somebody force me to care,” Adam Driver sings, practically sneers, at a pivotal moment in filmmaker Noah Baumbach’s blistering new divorce drama, “Marriage Story,” his voice hemorrhaging, quivering with unbearable emotion, rising with searing anger but also pure, distilled desperation. “Somebody let me come through, I’ll always be there, As frightened as you, To help us survive!” he roars in his literal cry for help, belting out Stephen Sondheim’s “Being Alive,” from the 1970 musical play “Company,” like he’s gasping for air, looking to claw at the nearest life preserver and hold on for dear life.

There’s a scene in D.A. Pennebaker’s “Original Cast Album: Company” that unites all Elaine Stritch fans. Of course, younger audiences know her Emmy-winning turn as Jack Donaghy’s sharp-tongued mother in “30 Rock,” and Broadway fans will never forget her Tony-winning one woman show “Elaine Stritch at Liberty,” the film version of which incidentally united her with Pennebaker decades later.
But it is her increasingly desperate attempts to record the most famous number of her career, the 11 o’clock number “The Ladies Who Lunch” from Stephen Sondheim’s “Company,” that Pennebaker captured and edited so sensationally, that shows a rare peek behind the curtain at the ferocious talent at her most vulnerable.
Less Broadway-inclined cinephiles may be unfamiliar with “Original Cast Album: Company.” The documentary legend, who died over the weekend at the age of 94, was known as a groundbreaking figure in the evolution of documentary filmmaking, helming...

D.A. Pennebaker, the documentary filmmaker who helped pioneer cinema verité in films like the 1967 Bob Dylan film “Don’t Look Back” and 1993’s “The War Room,” died Thursday at his home at age 94, Pennebaker’s son and executive producer and distributor for nearly all Pennebaker Hegedus films, Frazer Pennebaker, told TheWrap.
The celebrated cinematographer and director received an honorary Oscar in 2013 for his work, and an Oscar nomination, with Chris Hegedus, for “The War Room,” an inside look at the 1992 presidential campaign of Bill Clinton that helped make a star of Clinton’s then communications director and current ABC News chief anchor, George Stephanopoulos.
Pennebaker first rose to fame in the early ’60s after he and his colleague Richard Leacock developed one of the first fully portable 16mm synchronized camera and sound recording systems which revolutionized filmmaking.

Kapil Sharma is having a really bad 2017! Be it the flight brawl, drunken state of affairs or the last minute cancellations, re-shoots, ill health, once TV's top rated show is seeing bad days. The show's Trp is falling and a lot of people are blaming Kapil Sharma for it and more precisely, his bad health. Let's take a look back at all the past mishaps with the show that doomed its future. First, it was the untimely exit of Sunil Grover, Ali Asgar and Chandan Prabhakar from the show, following Kapil's rude behaviour on a flight. While the co-stars ultimately patched up, there was another thing bugging the show and it was the number of re-shoots that happened due to Kapil Sharma's ill health and cancellations. Big stars like Shah Rukh Khan, and most recently Ajay Devgn and Emraan Hashmi were forced to return when Kapil did not show up on the set.

Mubi is partnering with the New York Film Festival to present highlights from Projections, a festival program of film and video work that expands upon our notions of what the moving image can do and be. James N. Kienitz Wilkin's Indefinite Pitch (2016), recipient of the festival's Kazuko Trust Award, is showing on Mubi in many countries around the world from October 18 - November 16, 2016.I’ve come to the conclusion that movies always communicate the circumstances in which they were made, and most of the time, these circumstances are unconscious influences. If one identifies with movies, or has dedicated one’s life to, or expects to make a living from, movies, then circumstantially, one's personal ambitions, dreams and memories get riskily exposed. Indefinite Pitch tries to pinpoint this. But not everything can be pinned down. In music, not all instruments make notes with a clear pitch. The rising and falling background...

Fourteen years after Eesha Koppikar sizzled in 'Khallaas' in Ram Gopal Varma's gangster thriller Company, the filmmaker is gearing up to recreate the special number for his Veerappan biopic. The plot of Ram Gopal Varma's Veerappan covers Asia's biggest manhunt in history, the hunt for Koose Muniswamy Veerappan, also known as bandit Veerappan. While the 2002 film featured Ajay Devgn, Vivek Oberoi and Manisha Koirala, the biopic has Sandeep Bharadwaj in the titular character, and Lisa Ray. Zareen Khan, who made waves with her bold turn in Hate Story 3, steps into Eesha's shoes for the song. "The lyrics, 'Bachke tu rehna re... Nahin duja mauka milega sambhalna,' literally hint at Darwin's 'survival of the fittest' theory. Now the lyrics have been reworked to 'Khallas Veerappan', but its spirit remains the same, with a sexy Zareen dancing in the forest", states Rgv while talking about the recreated track.

Ram Gopal Varma never fails to make news. This time round, it's for a good reason. After releasing the trailer of his latest film Veerappan and announcing Rai, the maverick film maker has now confirmed that he is making Sarkar 3 with Amitabh Bachchan in the lead. Amitabh Bachchan recently he said that when he had visited Ram Gopal Varma at his new office (named 'Company'), Sarkar 3 was amongst the many things that they spoke about. Besides that, he did not say anything. On the other hand, Rgv stated that he was very excited about the film as for him, Sarkar 3 was as an opportunity to redeem, reinvent and redefine him. He added while they were keeping the essence of Sarkar, Amitabh Bachchan would be styled as per today's fashion trends. Additionally, while Aishwarya Rai Bachchan or Abhishek Bachchan won't be there in the film, Sarkar 3 will see a...

Says a source close to the director, "Ramu kept away from Mumbai to avoid all the flak he was getting for making repetitive films. He spent 4 years re-charging his batteries in Hyderabad. Vivek Oberoi recently revealed that he wants to delve deeper into the process of filmmaking and hence decided to produce films and now the actor mentioned that he will also be producing Company 2, to be directed by Ram Gopal Varma. Appreciating the equation he shares with the filmmaker, Vivek also added that Rgv has always written great characters for him and that he trusts the director's vision completely. Ram Gopal Varma is one of India's most prominent independent filmmakers over the last two decades. From his start with films like the Telugu crime classic Shiva through his Hindi gangster epic Company in the early part of the 21st century, Varma blazed an edgy trail through Indian genre cinema that encouraged and nurtured the careers of many who came after him. No less than the godfather of Indian Independent cinema himself, Anurag Kashyap, got his big break by writing Rgv's Satya over a decade ago. However, the last several years have been rough for Rgv.After a string of a dozen or more massive flops in multiple languages, Ram Gopal Varma has become associated with box office and critical failure. Even his highest profile ventures...

He has been really busy shooting in the snow-capped Poland. He has been filming a song with shock value in the European country for his upcoming, psychological romance, The Secret (which was earlier titled as The Affair) Speaking about the film, Sachiin Joshi said, "The Secret is about an incurable attraction and how social media and technology can doom a relationship." When asked about why he chose Ram Gopal Varma to helm the film, he said, "Like everybody else, I had my reservations too till Ramu pointed out that he's the same man who made Shiva, Satya, Rangeela and Company. He is always mistaken because he looks at things differently. He has a unique take on everything in life and has always gone ahead with his choices.

Bombay Velvet
Starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Karan Johar, Satyadeep Mishra, Manish Choudhary, K K Menon
Directed by Anurag Kashyap
Smoke-filled hazy but hectic frames jostle for supremacy in Anurag Kashyap’s most stylish film to date.
So far all his gangland gaathas were fiercely homespun. Unkempt unwashed immoral sods firing their desi guns in the sugarcane fields of the Indian hinterland. In Bombay Velvet Kashyap jazzes up his gangland theme, spruces up his act, sharpens his claws and emerges with a story of q hustler’s rise to notoriety in the Mumbai …sorry, Bombay, of the 1960s.
The power of the gun is palpable. The ambience of smokey nightclubs and messy shootouts on darkly-lit sinister nights is impeccable. We can almost touch the terror.

Giving out duds at Box-office is not harmful but what is really demeaning is being part of unworthy, embarrassing movies. Though we are not making any perception about the caliber and potential of an actor like Ajay Devgn, there are few flicks which the superstar would also want disown like us or he might always regret of. While we take a look at the disasters he readily (and repeatedly) did, we also hope Ajay steers clear of it in future.
Action Jackson: With the actor putting on his dancing shoes, everyone deemed it to be an image changeover for Ajay Devgn and the most-anticipated spectacle of the year. On the contrary filmmaker Prabhu Dheva and Ajay's combination was shunned by all.
