Abhishek Bachchan On 21 Years Of Run
Image
Abhishek Bachchan revisits 21 Years of his romantic action drama Run with Subhash K Jha.

What makes this Tamil-to-Hindi adaptation nominally watchable is the way director Jeeva treats the very old and very predictable story of a headstrong boy from a semi-hick town who falls in love in the metro with the coy and simpering sister of a monstrously possessive gangster who, we are told, chops off a boy’s limb for teasing his precious sister.

“Tum ho hi aisi. Would you prefer girls to tease you? Any boy would do what my son did,” says the limbless boy’s hot-blooded dad.

Sanskar, as you can see, isn’t high on this film’s list of priorities. In fact, a whole commodious parallel subplot featuring the insufferably aggressive Vijay Raaz runs through the main love story. Raaz calls his screen dad (Anjan Shrivastava) every name from a boozard to a smelly skunk.

The car slammed into her chair. It was terrifying.”

Bachchan Saab continued, “The car hit her and took her down a crevice and slammed into a cactus plant. Akshay Kumar pulled the car out and extricated her.

Can the ‘Sholay’ return?
Image
Can someone imagine a sequel of 'Sholay' in contemporary times? Does anyone have the courage to think out-of-the-box instead of dishing out trash in the name of entertainment.

Dear friends, this is the 45th year of the movie that changed the paradigm of Indian cinema. There are umpteen number of stories around the movie itself. Every person you meet has something unique to share about Sholay.

My friend, a cinema critic has defined this movie as a movie in ‘episodes’. Also a point to be noted about the narrative, screenplay, dialogues, direction, etc. is that the movie seems incomplete without any of the characters.

All the characters, scenes, sequences seem imperative unlike contemporary movies where even children find mistakes and there are gross bloopers. Also the high point about the writers is that each character is well defined and has a role to take the narrative ahead.

Imran Khan
Bollywood actors who stepped off the limelight
Imran Khan
Failure, competition and the pressure of staying relevant perennially looms on actors in Bollywood. Some can cope with it and some cannot. Those who cannot, often quit and opt for a different path in another fields.

The author has jotted out a few names, who courted the limelight for a while but could not continue their journey in the world of glitz and sparkle called Bollywood.

Imran Khan

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan's nephew Imran Khan has quit Bollywood as an actor. He broke the news earlier this month. Imran made his debut in Hindi film industry in 2008 with the hit film "Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na". However, most of what followed was forgettable fare as "Luck", "Kidnap", "I Hate Luv Story" and "Break Ke Baad". There was "Delhi Belly" in 2011, but that was an odd success, clearly not enough. Imran's last big screen outing was in 2015 with Kangana Ranaut...

After all these years, superdancer Malaika has come out to reveal a shocking incident about the filming of the song. She was bleeding around the waist while dancing, she revealed.

"I fell several times while shooting for 'Chaiyya chaiyya'. I would sway right and left owing to the strong wind, and to avoid that, the team tied me with the train with a rope through my ghaghra. Sounds of Bollywood Part 2: Naach Gaane
We now dive into Part 2 of the songs of Bollywood. 90s Bollywood had a hefty past of classic films and songs to surpass. From Dilip Kumar walking along a cliff, Dev Anand comically falling down, Raj Kapoor thinking about death and legacy, to Rajesh Khanna staring out at the sea (on another cliff), Sunny Deol stomping his feet as his gang mates went up the hill and Rishi Kapoor righting the wrongs of his past life through a song. How do you top that and still be the lovable, funky, fun and completely absurd Bollywood we knew and love… Easy! From the soft, easy listening music and some jazz combinations of the earlier films, the music and dance sequences transposed to low budget big band music taking on the blasting of the base club beats Ko-ing the western world with a bigger dose of desi swag. As well as dancing queens and dhak dhak,...

Sanju Music Review
Sanjay Dutt has survived 40 years in the Hindi film industry taking on many varied roles, hairstyles and personalities. While not always a person of great virtue, he remains nonetheless a supremely popular star amongst the changing multitude of stars in Bollywood. Sanju, the new film by Rajkumar Hirani, gives audiences the chance to experience the whole story of Sanjay Dutt from Naam till Kaante and beyond. Produced under his own banner along with Vidhu Vinod Chopra and starring Ranbir Kapoor, the music for it would seem to have to be as varied as Sanjay Dutt’s own life and thus the responsibility is put in the hands of Ar Rahman, Sanjay Wandrekar and Rohan Rohan.

The first song Main Badhiya Tu Bhi Badhiya is parody song of music from yesteryear. Sanjay Dutt’s early career seems to have been about convincing his legendary father Sunil Dutt. With this track, Sonu Nigam...

The beginner's guide to Bollywood
Dave Lawrie Aug 16, 2017

Fancy a film that mashes up Reservoir Dogs and The Usual Suspects, with a few song and dance numbers? Step this way...

Film is such a diverse medium that it is possible to call yourself a fan without ever venturing out of your favourite genre. Hell, it is perfectly acceptable nowadays to add 'films' to your list of hobbies by watching nothing more than the output of the McU. Getting some people to venture into the wonderful world of foreign cinema can admittedly be a tall order. We’ve all met one, right? The 'I go to the cinema to watch, not to read!' crowd. That’s fine. There is nothing wrong with having your entertainment packaged as you like it.

Kaabil review – preposterous Hrithik Roshan melodrama stuck in Bollywood's past
Sanjay Gupta’s tale of a blind dubbing artist avenging the ghost of his wife is the sort of nonsense the Indian film industry stopped churning out 20 years ago

Set against the prospect of Shah Rukh Khan playing a mobster in this weekend’s other major Hindi release, Raees, this teeth-grinding, mouth-foaming melodrama is destined to appear Bollywood trad, proceeding from the kind of innately preposterous premise a screenwriter might have tried to get away with 20 years ago. Here – no word of a lie – is the story of a blind dubbing artist (honey-eyed pin-up Hrithik Roshan) who embarks on a kill-crazy rampage after his equally sightless beloved is driven to self-sacrifice by well-connected thugs. It’s not good, exactly, but I can’t say it’s not watchable on some far-out level.

Sanjay Gupta, the crime specialist who directed the Hindi redo of Reservoir Dogs (2002’s Kaante), eventually embraces the full absurdity of this setup.

Sanjay Gupta is the man who has been one of the most tech savvy filmmakers around and knows his men, as apparent in macho entertainers like Kaante, Zinda, Musafir and Shootout franchises.

No wonder, when the two decided to join hands for Kaabil with Hrithik Roshan in the lead, it was pretty much on the cards that the film would bring in the right mix of emotions, style and performances.

“I have been a huge fan of Sanjay and have been interacting with him for last two-three years. He used to discuss quite a few subjects with me and I was looking forward to work with him since he is superb when it comes to technically mounting a film,” says Rakesh Roshan, “When he...

Blog: In Praise of Teraa Surroor Music
Two years after The Xpose, Himeshji has returned with a lot of hard work and extreme dedication to improving his physique, acting and (as always!) giving us stellar music! ‘Teraa Surroor’ is the second film of the ‘Surroor’ franchise. ‘Aap Kaa Surroor’ movie was a super hit at the Box Office in 2007. The songs from the first movie are all evergreen and are very much loved by each and every Reshammiyan (fans of Himeshji). Let’s take a look and see the new musical gift that Himeshji has given us this time, with ‘Teraa Surroor’.

Main Woh Chaand

A romantic ballad, ‘Main Woh Chaand’, is about the aching and the longing moments of love. The song has been sung wonderfully by Darshan Raval with a small violin portion having vocals by Himeshji himself. The melody is soothingly beautiful and the piano rifts give a special touch. The song has lyrics by Sameer Anjaan ji.

Jazbaa Music Review
Ever since this film was announced, the hype surrounding Jazbaa has been almost surreal. The film sees director Sanjay Gupta (Shootout at Lokhandwala, Kaante, Musafir) working with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan for the first time with a stellar cast of national award winning actors Irrfan Khan and Shabana Azmi. Jazbaa is an action thriller with a hard hitting storyline. Its soundtrack is however, is very soothing to the ears with songs that are not over the top at all. Jazbaa is not the kind of film that would rely on music to influence its plot/storyline. It is a thriller and often with these kind of films we hear fast paced/dramatic songs but in the case of Jazbaa, the music is totally the opposite.

Bandeya – Jubin (Amjad – Nadeem)

‘Bandeya’ is the first song that released from the album and from the promo itself, one could tell that the song would...

Jazbaa First Look Review
She does not not call it a come back but we cinema enthusiasts probably will continue to mark Jazbaa as a comeback of sorts as it is the return of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to the silver screen after a five year hiatus. (Yes we know she’s been busy brand-ambassador-ing her way to glory in this hiatus period but we still did not get a movie!)

So apart from stunning us in various elegant gowns at Cannes 2015 and performing her Loreal brand ambassador duties, Aishwarya’s attendance at the festival had more to it. She also unveiled the Jazbaa first look. Unless you have been living under a rock you’re probably already aware that Jazbaa is a Sanjay Gupta (Kaante) directorial which also stars Irrfan Khan, Jackie Shroff and Atul Kulkarni in title roles. There is some buzz that Shabana Azmi is also part of the project and that...

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
Sanjay Gupta ropes in Hollywood action director for Jazbaa
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
A while back we had reported that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, contrary to reports of her making her comeback with Mani Ratnam's Tamil film, would in fact first be seen in Sanjay Gupta's next titled Jazbaa. Soon after, Aishwarya confirmed the development while making a statement at the Cannes Film Festival. Now we hear that Gupta has roped in known Hollywood action director Spiro Razatos to helm the action sequences in the film. Spiro, who is best known for his work on films like Back to the Future (1985), Fast & Furious 6 (2013) and the more recently Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) , will be in the city for the film. Interestingly while Spiro has previously worked on Bollywood ventures like Kaante and My Name is Khan, this will be the first time that the action director will be in India for a shoot. Jazbaa, which is said to be an action drama,...

Sunny Leone at an event for 2012 AVN Awards Show (2012)
Sunny Leone as Laila Lele in Milap and PNCs Mastizaade
Sunny Leone at an event for 2012 AVN Awards Show (2012)
With the big success Ragini Mms 2 under her belt, Sunny Leone is indeed hitting the mainstream button with vengeance. She has green-lighted her next Bollywood outing in the form of Mastizaade. The film is special as it also marks the return of Milap Zaveri as a director. With three back to back hits as a writer behind him (Grand Masti, Main Tera Hero and Shootout At Wadala), Milap is indeed raring to go. If the title is exciting enough, Sunny Leone would be playing a character by the name of, hold your breath, Laila Lele. "I am really excited to have Sunny as my Laila," quips Milap, whose Shootout At Wadala incidentally had Sunny in an item number titled 'Laila'. While the film's screenplay has been written by Mustaq Sheikh, dialogues are by Milap Zaveri. Mastizaade also marks the return of Milap with Pritish Nandy Communications (Pnc). "After writing...

Sanjay Gupta to use music that embellishes, not blemishes
Sanjay Gupta

Gupta has given hits like "Kaante" and "Shootout at Wadala" and these movies too had item numbers "Maahi ve" and "Laila teri le legi", respectively, but he says not any more.

John Abraham Will Kick Your Ass In Extreme Slow Motion In The Shootout At Wadala
The first trailer for Sanjay Gupta's highly anticipated cops vs. gangsters flick, Shootout at Wadala has appeared online and it looks pretty fucking stylish. Twitch readers might know Gupta from a few of his older films like Kaante or Zinda, but this looks like a significant step up from those films, even though I enjoyed them well enough. This film is a thematic prequel to a film he produced back in 2007 called Shootout at Lokhandwala, which recreated a famous gun battle between gangsters and Mumbai cops. Wadala takes the feud back to the seventies, when India was even more inundated with wicked mustaches than it is today. While the trailer is stylish enough on its own, it is really the cast of this beast that...
