Swimfan - La fille de la piscine

John Polson
Love, Obsession & High School Revenge in ‘Swimfan’ [The Lady Killers Podcast]
John Polson
“Tell me you love me. You don’t have to mean it, but just say it.”

The old adage tells us that hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Director John Polson adds age to this equation, asking if anything can be scarier than a teenage girl in love. His 2002 erotic thriller Swimfan places Adrian Lyne’s Fatal Attraction within the walls of a modern high school and asks us to sympathize with a reckless young man.

Ben Cronin (Jesse Bradford) is the star of his high school swim team anticipating a scholarship to Stanford and maybe a spot on the Olympic team. But as he’s preparing for an important meet, a new student splashes into his life. Wealthy and sophisticated, Madison (Erika Christensen) sets her sights on Ben and orchestrates a one night stand. When Ben chooses to stay with his girlfriend Amy (Shiri Appleby), Madison decides...

20 Years Ago, A Forgotten Robert De Niro Horror Movie Was A Huge Box Office Hit
Image
(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)

Horror movies may not often get a whole lot of respect, critically speaking. For whatever reason, they are often treated as a lesser form of entertainment. It's only the rarest of rare genre offerings that can go on to become embraced both critically and commercially, with Jordan Peele's "Get Out" serving as a shining example from relatively recent times. That's an outlier though. One undeniable truth though is that these movies are a reliable backbone for Hollywood studios, delivering consistent profits against relatively low investments. Good movies, bad movies, it often doesn't matter.

Hardcore horror fans will tell you that the number of bad movies far outweighs the good in any given year. It's about searching for that diamond in the rough.

Fisher Stevens at IndieWire Honors on the Key to Making a Great Doc Series: ‘Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover’
Image
On June 6, the 2024 IndieWire Honors ceremony celebrated 13 creators and stars responsible for some of the most stellar work of the TV season. Curated and selected by IndieWire’s editorial team, the event was a new edition of previous IndieWire Honors ceremonies, this time focused entirely on television. We showcased their work with new interviews leading up to the Los Angeles celebration.

“Is your desk very messy or is it very clean?”

This was the question host Alex Edelman asked renaissance man, actor, filmmaker, and documentarian Fisher Stevens before welcoming him to the stage to accept the Magnify Award at the 2024 IndieWire Honors. It’s a fair ask, as Stevens remains one of the busiest men in Hollywood and abroad. He’s a jack-of-all-trades, starring in films from Wes Anderson, as well as being a part of the hit series “Succession,” producing movies like “Swimfan” and “Uptown Girls,” and taking on...

How Netflix’s ‘Baby Reindeer’ Humanizes the Female Stalker
Image
No one sets out to be an object of obsession.

On Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer” when Martha (Jessica Gunning) enters the pub where down-and-out comedian Donny Dunn (show creator and writer Richard Gadd) works, she is looking downcast, like she’s trying to disappear. One simple cup of tea opens her up. It’s an act of kindness (or pity), but that’s all it takes for Donny to become her new fixation. Her interest in him unfolds in a montage of colorful outfits, badly applied pink lipstick and lies. She sends him tens of thousands of emails, ranging from the randy (“myy curtains r waitinfro yu they r readyy”) to the ranting (“i just had an egg”). She follows him home and sits outside his window for hours, pretends to be a hot-shot lawyer with politicians’ names in her phone and to own a penthouse in Belsize Park. Martha...

What Happened to Julia Stiles?
Image
10 Things I Hate About Julia Stiles

I hate that her idgaf attitude was not present in more 90s teen rom coms.

I hate that I totally forgot about the movie Save The Last Dance.

I hate that she doesn’t get the respect she deserves.

I hate that I thought she was in that movie Swimfan.

I hate that she got stuck doing generic rom coms.

I hate that her character in the Jason Bourne franchise never got a spin-off.

I hate that I really haven’t seen much of her later work.

I hate that she tricked me into liking Shakespeare as a teen.

But most of all, I hate the way I don’t hate her – not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all. Oh, and I hate that I don’t know what the heck happened to her?

So let’s find out: Wtf Happened to.

It’s a Good Time to Be Fisher Stevens: “I Get to Kind of Do Everything at This Point in My Life”
Image
Given his growing tendency to line up half of Hollywood to appear in his films, anyone cast in a Wes Anderson movie might worry just how much screen time they’ll end up getting.

Not Fisher Stevens.

After minor roles in The Grand Budapest Hotel (a concierge), Isle of Dogs (the voice of a mutt called Scrap) and The French Dispatch (an unnamed magazine story editor), he’s now set to make a similarly background appearance in Asteroid City, Anderson’s latest, and featuring arguably the director’s most ludicrous array of top-tier talent to date (a list so long, it may test the wide lenses of Cannes’ red carpet paparazzi when it bows May 23). And very happily so.

“I’m around. I mean, you’ll see me in the film. But I wouldn’t say it’s my Oscar-winning performance,” Stevens tells The Hollywood Reporter, adding that blink-and-you’ll-miss-it or not,...

Joshua Jackson Tells All on Explicit ‘Fatal Attraction’ Sex Scenes: ‘You Have to Believe These People Want to F— Each Other’
Image
Joshua Jackson has no problem talking about sex. In our time together, he doesn’t blush when referencing a woman’s nipples or breaking down how two people “fuck” on television. He’s been viewed as a sex symbol since he was a teen, playing the class-clown-turned-heartthrob Pacey Witter on “Dawson’s Creek,” and now it’s just who he is.

And it’s a very big part of “Fatal Attraction.” “The sex scenes are of great importance,” says Jackson, 44, “because they’re furthering the narrative. You have to believe that these people want to fuck each other.” The series, which premieres on Paramount+ on April 30, doesn’t shy away from the kind of nudity that Hollywood used to pepper R-rated adult movies with in the ’70s and ’80s.

Most know the story behind the 1987 film starring Glenn Close and Michael Douglas, which grossed $320 million worldwide and was nominated for six Academy Awards,...

Hulu New Releases: August 2022
FX Movie Download (2014)
You ever notice how HBO’s releases tend to do the heavy lifting in HBO Max’s content library? That makes plenty of sense given that HBO has a track record of producing hits well before the streaming era even began. Well, a similar concept is now playing out over on Hulu. Like many monthly releases before it, Hulu’s list of new releases for August 2022 is highlighted by a whole bunch of FX TV shows.

The initiative once known as “FX on Hulu” is no more but that’s not stopping the cable network-turned quality TV brand from churning out some intriguing titles for the streaming world this month. It all starts early on with season 2 of the delightful comedy Reservation Dogs on Aug. 3. That is followed up by the docuseries Children of the Underground on Aug. 13, Little Demon on Aug. 26, and The Patient of Aug. 30. The most interesting of the bunch,...

ABC Drama Pilot ‘Will Trent’ Casts Erika Christensen
Image
Erika Christensen has been cast in the “Will Trent” pilot at ABC, Variety has learned.

Christensen joins previously announced series lead Ramón Rodríguez in the drama pilot, which is based on Karin Slaughter’s bestselling “Will Trent” novel series.

The show follows Special Agent Will Trent (Rodríguez) of the Georgia Bureau of Investigations (Gbi). Trent was abandoned at birth and endured a harsh coming-of-age in Atlanta’s overwhelmed foster care system. But now, determined to use his unique point of view to make sure no one is abandoned like he was, he has the highest clearance rate in the Gbi.

Christensen will play Angie, a detective with the Atlanta Police Department who has seen it all, but can still crack jokes about the bleak world of being a cop. She’s also Will’s on-again-off-again girlfriend. Friends with Will since they were both kids at a group foster home, they...

Soundtrack Mix #18: The Cinematic Swimming Pool Mix
Image
Due to its persistent on-screen presence, the swimming pool can be taken for granted; but beneath the surface it is cinema’s Jungian friend, representing secrets lying underneath. It exudes glamour and danger, shifting beyond conscious realms. It is a key to transformation, coming of age tales and renewed relationships. It is a status symbol and whether or not the pool is intact says a lot about the mood of the film and the state of its characters. Away from states of intensity, the swimming pool emerges on screen as a signifier of a time to unwind and to forget life past the poolside. The films featured in this mix show how the pool alludes mysterious symbolism and sexual awakening; murder, lust, and love brush shoulders as sun kissed babes in bikinis whisper sweet truths or uncover deadly secrets (such as the strange swimming pool activities in Three Women or...

Maya Erskine (‘PEN15’) on playing a version of her teenage self: ‘When you’re 13 everything is life or death’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
“When you’re 13 everything is life or death,” says Maya Erskine, the star, co-creator and co-writer of Hulu’s Emmy-nominated comedy “PEN15.” “It is so extreme. What’s a way to show that can be funny, but can also be heartbreaking? I love this age because it was such a turning point for me. I had so many traumatic moments. I was very ashamed of those things that I felt like I was the only one going through, yet I found that so many people can relate to it.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

Erskine and Anna Konkle are both 34 years old, but play middle-schoolers dealing with the cringeworthy moments that teenagers face on a daily basis. “If you actually had a 13-year old doing the things we were going through, I don’t think it would be funny,” Erskine explains. “I think it would be heartbreaking the whole time.

‘The Dry’ Review: Eric Bana Stars in Australian Thriller About the Peril of Going Home Again
Image
A dusty, volatile little town in the middle of nowhere, this slice of Australia is going to burst into flames at any minute. That’s just a fact of life in this fictional place. The whole area around Kiewarra has been parched in a drought for at least the last 10 years, and 324 days have passed since the last drop of rain when the bodies are found at the Hadler house in what seems to be the first part of a murder-suicide.

Karen is lying flat in the front hallway from a shotgun blast to the chest, while her son Billy is dead in his room around the corner (Karen’s baby girl was mercifully spared). Luke Hadler’s corpse is found a ways down the road, and everyone assumes that he killed his wife and kids before offing himself. A lot of folks in Kiewarra still think Luke was responsible...

Sam Zvibleman (‘PEN15’ director and co-writer) on diving into ‘deeper emotional’ moments with stars Anna Konkle and Maya Erskine [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
“I think the performances are even better this year,” praises “PEN15” director Sam Zvibleman when discussing the accolades Season 2 of Hulu’s hit comedy has received. The series stars Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle as middle schoolers and awkward social outcasts in the year 2000. “Maya and Anna were obviously wonderful the first season. I think they got to dive into maybe some deeper emotional stuff. The world of middle school sort of pummels them a bit harder and they really got to show off their dramatic acting chops.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

Zvibleman co-wrote the pilot episode, but stepped in to direct the last four episodes of Season 1 and the entirety of Season 2. “In the first season those episodes in the back half were getting to some of the potential of what the show could be,” he explains when describing his decision to direct. “I think we’re...

Mortal Kombat Sequel: What Should Happen Next
Image
It Has Begun!

Or it will. Mortal Kombat came out and did all right for itself. The reboot has its highs and its lows, but one thing I will say it does a better job at is setting up a sequel. The 1995 original had a decent enough cliffhanger with a kaiju-sized Shao Kahn popping in and everyone ready to just kick his ass, but at the time, there weren’t too many promising places to take the sequel.

The first movie was just so front-loaded that the second didn’t have enough to rope us in. That’s why it’s probably for the best that Johnny Cage is currently being treated purely as a sequel hook. He’s the carrot on the stick meant to keep us interested in keeping this franchise going.

Also there’s still a tournament. As someone who has seen every adaptation of Mortal Kombat,...

Berlinale Captures Growth, Innovations on Non-u.S. Series Drama Scene
Image
Year by year, the Berlin Film Festival’s drama series strand and market movers closer to center-stage. As in so many ways, Covid-19 may merely accelerate that process. The Zoo Palast Berlinale Series showcase no longer screen a time-consuming 20-minute taxi ride from the festival center, but online, its titles as accessible as festival movies.

For industry attendees movies — first arthouse and documentaries, later studio-style indie tentpoles — were the name of the game at Berlin. Now many producers who go to Berlin to talk movies are looking for a future with TV. After canvassing marketgoers, five takeaways about Berlin’s drama series lineup and Berlinale Series Market, which celebrates March 2 its Co-Pro Series pitching sessions, emerge:

Luca Guadagnino has played quite a bit in various forms of visual storytelling. Watch: Luca Guadagnino & Sufjan Stevens Reteam with Music Video for Tell Me You Love Me
Considering recent developments, it’s hard to imagine the long-rumored Call Me By Your Name sequel will ever happen (unless it took more from André Aciman’s sequel novel Find Me and focused primarily on Michael Stuhlbarg’s character), but that’s not stopping Luca Guadagnino and Sufjan Stevens from continuing to collaborate.

On the heels of a recent short-form Guadagnino video, he’s now directed the music video for Stevens’ “Tell Me You Love Me,” from his latest album, The Ascension. Made in collaboration with Alessio Bolzoni and Celia Hempton, the Giuseppe Favale-shot video is a quarantine-friendly look at dancers splaying out in a white room, with intercuts featuring snowy scenery, neon lights, and seemingly hand-painted art. It is a video, indeed.

HBO Max Adding Over 200 Movies And TV Shows Next Month
The first of the month is typically when the variety of streaming services on offer bolster their respective libraries with a mixture of original and pre-existing content, freshening things up for subscribers in the process. January 1st also happens to be the first day of 2021, though, so people might be expecting a little more than just a handful of new additions, and HBO Max are stepping up to the plate in a big way.

Of course, Wonder Woman 1984 is set to entice millions to sign up for Warner Bros.’ platform, especially when the entire slate of theatrical releases are also heading to the streaming site on the same day that they hit the big screen. And keen to capitalize on the inevitable influx of new customers, HBO Max is adding a massive amount of film and television titles on January 1st, with the onslaught set to continue over the next 30 days.

Interview: Horror Queers Hosts Trace Thurman and Joe Lipsett Talk Favorite Episodes, The Films They Won’t Cover, Joe Bob Briggs, and What Sets Them Apart
Image
Trace Thurman and Joe Lipsett might not have initially set out to make such a big mark on the horror podcast landscape, but they’ve done it anyway. Started in January 2019, Horror Queers is the spinoff podcast to their Bloody Disgusting horror column of the same name. Each week, Joe and Trace deep dive into different horror-related films through their unique queer lens, often sifting through coded gay characters, homoerotic innuendo, or outright queerness.

Not only have they covered major franchise films like Scream, It, and Final Destination, but they also particularly specialize in covering lesser-known films like Ginger Snaps, Tragedy Girls, Phantom of the Paradise, Daughters of Darkness, and Swimfan. A cornerstone of Horror Queers’ objective is to broaden a horror fans’ palette, exposing them to different facets of horror they might have previously written off.

If they do cover a franchise film, it’s not the usual Friday The 13th,...

Pool of London
Image
I’d never heard of this gem of a British production; now it goes on my list of highly recommended titles. A dock area on the Thames is ‘the pool,’ and the sailors that disembark from the cargo ships are susceptible to the temptations of black market trade. A single eventful weekend traces the fates of a half-dozen young people, the women that like the sailors, and the sailor that gets mixed up in a deadly serious crime. Director Basil Dearden’s excellent cast is mostly unfamiliar to us Yanks, but we get really tied up in their problems. This picture should be much better known. It’s the first English movie to depict an interracial romance, and it does so without sensationalism or special pleading. The best new extra is an interview with actor Earl Cameron, who at 103 years of age has his act (and his memories) totally together.

‘Fantasy Island’ Review: Blumhouse’s Awful Reboot Is a Total Nightmare
Jim Carrey and Ben Schwartz in Sonic, le film (2020)
Just how dire is Hollywood’s dependence on intellectual property? The “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie wasn’t even this week’s most desperate attempt to bring an old brand into multiplexes. Not that rebooting ABC’s “Fantasy Island” for the big screen was an inherently bad idea — the 1977 television show’s “‘Twilight Zone’ in paradise” vibe is always sunny and evergreen — but , and this slapdash programmer is such a complete shrug of a movie that it feels almost defiantly apathetic from the moment it starts. Dumb in ways that range from inane to insulting, but always growing duller by the minute, this new “Fantasy Island” is only a few minutes old before your greatest wish is to be watching literally anything else.

So there’s an island. And fantasies come true there. But — and here’s the catch! — people need to be careful what they wish for. Aladdin learned that lesson,...

Melissa Gorga Weighs in on Teresa Giudice Possibly Dating Her "Hot Pool Boy" & That Shirtless Selfie
Anthony Delorenzo takes a mean mirror selfie. But despite his impressive abs and history with Real Housewives of New Jersey's Teresa Giuidice, it doesn't sound like the two are going to become an item any time soon. "He's a good guy," notes Giudice's Rhonj co-star Melissa Gorga in this clip from Wednesday's Watch What Happens Live. As she explained earlier, Anthony is her husband Joe Gorga's childhood friend and maintains a similarly platonic relationship with her sister-in-law. "I would love for her to end up with Tony," Gorga tells host Andy Cohen. "But I honestly...

‘Fatal Attraction’ Remake: Glenn Close Is Right to Want the Story Told From Female Perspective
Adrian Lyne
When Adrian Lyne’s unlikely blockbuster “Fatal Attraction” hit theaters in the autumn of 1987, the psycho-sexual thriller a critical and commercial hit, garnering $320 million at the box office and six Oscar nominations, including one for Glenn Close. Now, the actress has said in a recent interview with IndieWire that “Fatal Attraction” is due for a remake from the perspective of her character, Alex Forrest. And she’s exactly right.

While the sub-genre doesn’t have much heat in Hollywood these days — though Gillian Flynn’s novels have spawned some notable exceptions like “Gone Girl” and “Sharp Objects,” and the horror genre has always been compelled by unstable women and their inner lives — Close herself is hoping to give it some new blood with a fresh perspective.

“We’ve gone back to Paramount to find out, because they own the title,” Close told Deadline. “I think they’ve had some things in the works,...

Shiri Appleby, Jesse Bradford, and Erika Christensen in Swimfan - La fille de la piscine (2002)
Why Swimfan Is the Most Underrated Thriller of the 2000s
Shiri Appleby, Jesse Bradford, and Erika Christensen in Swimfan - La fille de la piscine (2002)
Fifteen years ago, Swimfan came to the big screen. Made for $10 million, Swimfan grossed $34 million worldwide. This tale of a swimmer (Jesse Bradford) who engages the wrong girl (Erika Christensen) in a one night stand, was essentially Fatal Attraction for the teen set. And, as hyperbolic as this may sound, it was also the best film of 2002. Even if it doesn't make IMDb's most underrated list for the Aughts.

Okay, so it came nowhere near an Academy Award nomination. Hell, it didn't even pick up an MTV Movie Awards nod. Does anybody believe that the best picture winner for any given year is really The best picture? If we ignore that idea altogether, then it is plausible Swimfan was indeed the best overall film released all throughout 2002. It may not have done the biggest box office, barely anyone remembers it now, but what it did in a cerebral sense, and with its visceral imagery,...

Amell easily made it through all six obstacles, never exercising the option to tag-in his coach Kacy Catanzaro. (I get why this choice was needed for some of the competitors, but I have to admit: I felt a bit cheated.) Once he got to the top of the Warped Wall,...

Red-Carpet Video Interview: ‘Swimfan’ Star Erika Christensen of ‘The Case for Christ’
Chicago – HollywoodChicago.com publisher Adam Fendelman interviews Erika Christensen at the star-studded red-carpet premiere of the new film “The Case for Christ” at Chicago’s AMC River East on April 6, 2017. To begin the interview, Adam reminisces back to Erika’s stalker stardom in “Swimfan” and gets pleasantly videobombed by “The Wire” star Frankie Faison.

Based on a true story, Chicago Tribune investigative journalist and self-proclaimed atheist Lee Strobel (played by Mike Vogel) sets out to disprove the existence of God after his wife, Leslie Strobel (played by Erika Christensen), becomes a Christian.

The film, which opened on April 7, 2017, is based on Lee Strobel’s award-winning, best-selling book of the same name. “The Case for Christ” also stars Faye Dunaway, Robert Forster and Frankie Faison. Watch our interview below!

Sidney Kimmel Entertainment, Ivanhoe Pictures form Sk Global
The original companies will continue to release film and TV projects under their respective labels.

Clayne Crawford, Ethan Embry, Mykelti Williamson, and Chelsea Bruland in Convergence (2015)
Director Drew Hall on Redemption in his film convergence
Clayne Crawford, Ethan Embry, Mykelti Williamson, and Chelsea Bruland in Convergence (2015)
Dark Sky Films has brought us films as diverse and bold as The House Of The Devil, The Innkeepers, and Stake Land. Joining that esteemed company is the recently released (and now available on DVD, Blu-ray, and VOD) Convergence, in which a cop (Clayne Crawford, Swimfan, Jericho) finds himself trapped in limbo and must find redemption before he can escape. With support from veteran actors Ethan Embry (Vacancy, Once Upon A Time) and Mykelti Williamson (The Final Destination, Forrest Gump), the nightmarish action-horror film deals with weighty themes of religious fanaticism and atonement. We spoke with writer-director Drew Hall about his inspiration, beliefs, and symbolism.

Famous Monsters. Convergence is very timely since we’re in a period of religious extremism. Is that what prompted you to write the film?

Drew Hall. Yes. I grew up during a time period of very aggressive but non-violent anti-abortion protests. My family would take...
