Despite its popularity, Netflix's The Witcher franchise has been on a bumpy road for the past few years. It can probably be traced to the moment Henry Cavill departed the action fantasy series, but the spinoffs have not been smooth sailing either. After announcing and filming The Rats: A Witcher Tale a few years ago, it seems Netflix has a "disaster" on its hands.
In a new report by Redanian Intelligence, sources told them that The Rats spinoff was a "disaster" behind the scenes, turning out even worse than Blood Origin (which received very poor reviews). This coincides with the fact that Netflix ended production a few months early...

It's hard to believe, but more than two years have passed since The Witcher spin-off, The Rats, "finished" shooting. Since then, we've heard very little about the project, and pretty much nothing from Netflix. Still, no one seems overly bothered, seeing as Blood Origin was such a let-down.
Redanian Intelligence (via SFFGazette.com) has just shared an update, revealing that their sources have said the show "behind the scenes was a disaster," "worse than Blood Origin," and that "everything went wrong."
You may recall reports that production on the series was paused two months into a six-month shoot, allegedly a result of Netflix executives deciding that it wasn't worth continuing...

One of the best ways to scare viewers with horror films is to make them feel realistic. Nothing is scarier than something that could happen in reality. For example, the Final Destination film series shows various ways people can die during everyday activities. Clowns, sharks, anacondas, and more are also a bit nightmarish — thanks to the horror genre — and it seems like Hollywood is not running out of ideas anytime soon. Lionsgate and Pitch Perfect producer Paul Brooks are working on a rat horror flick, and what better place to have the movie set in than the Big Apple? New York City is known for many things, having a lot of rats being one of them. So, the killer rat infestation film will create a new meaning for "the city that never sleeps."

During the pandemic, director Todd Strauss-Schulson made a 4 minute short film called Rat, which was about “a lonely rat in New York City that finds love and dances the night away.” Now, Variety reports that Strauss-Schulson is set to direct the survival horror feature film Rats!, but it has no connection to his short film other than the fact that it’s set in New York City and will have rats in it.
Strauss-Schulson wrote the Rats! screenplay with Paul Sado, whose previous credits include the Adam Sandler movies Leo and The Cobbler. The story Strauss-Schulson and Sado crafted for this one puts New York City in a race against time to stop a killer rat infestation unlike anything the world has ever seen. The concept and setting brings to mind the 2002 movie The Rats (which was based on a James Herbert novel that was actually set in London), but...

Netflix was building up their series The Witcher, which is inspired by a series of novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, to be a major franchise. In addition to the flagship show, they made the anime film The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, a prequel mini-series called The Witcher: Blood Origin, another anime movie called The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep, and there were a couple other spin-offs in the works… but recently, it has looked like it was all winding down. The Witcher season 4 wrapped production last October, with Liam Hemsworth taking over the role of Geralt of Rivia from former star Henry Cavill, and Netflix announced that season 5 will be the end of the show. While we still don’t know when The Witcher season 4 will be premiering, season 5 is already filming – and Hemsworth has been spotted on set, in character!

Production is currently underway on the final ever season of Netflix's The Witcher adaptation, and some new leaked set photos have revealed Liam Hemsworth in action as Geralt of Rivia for the last time. The Australian actor was cast as the character when Henry Cavill stepped away from the show following Season 3. Fans will soon see Hemsworth in action for the first time in the upcoming fourth season (which is expected to release later this year), but we already have a glimpse at Hemsworth's final moments as Geralt.
The new set photos come to us via Redanian Intelligence on Instagram. Season 5 is currently in production in England, and the new photos have given us our first look at Liam Hemsworth in full Geralt of Rivia make-up and costume in the final season. World Rat Day, which falls on the Fourth of April, hopes to dispel the myths surrounding these common and misunderstood rodents. Meanwhile, John Lafia’s The Rats does the exact opposite — it’s designed to exploit our fear and discomfort. And that it does in every inch of its tawdry yet satisfying story of extreme infestation. This 2002 straight-to-television movie doesn’t go beyond the call of your basic creature feature, namely ones of the rat variety, but it does a better job of delivering that sense of crawly familiarity than most.
Originally slated for a mid-September premiere in 2001, The Rats (formerly known as The Colony) was pushed back a year, on account of the 9/11 terrorist attack. Shots of the World Trade Center were subsequently removed from this Fox-aired TV-movie; that opening scene of rats festering inside the head of the Statue of Liberty remained intact, only now a bit emptier...

Fans of Netflix's series adaptation of The Witcherjust can't seem to catch a break. They've dealt with several controversies in the past related to showrunners deviating from the source material, issues with story pacing, and its established lead Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill) being abruptly recast with Liam Hemsworth after Season 3. Despite the repeated disappointment, some viewers have tried to remain optimistic ahead of Season 4's scheduled release later this year. Unfortunately, there's more bad news about the franchise's anticipated spin-offs.

Geralt of Rivia has finished the next leg of his journey, and Netflix's monster-hunting fantasy show The Witcher has wrapped filming on its fourth season. This news comes courtesy of reliable Witcher scoop site Redanian Intelligence, who noticed that cast member Freya Allan (Ciri) posted a farewell message to Ciri's new thief accomplices, The Rats, on Instagram. "Mistle, Iskra, Giselher, Reef, Kayleigh, Asse. I love you all. Thank you for the most special season of [The Witcher]," the actor wrote, along with artwork she made for each of the characters.
The Rats are the band of teenage thieves Ciri met at the end of season 3. Season 4 of Netflix's The Witcher has potentially wrapped production, as revealed by Freya Allan in an emotional post on social media. Allan stars as Ciri, the last surviving royal of Cintra who was taken in by Geralt of Rivia and trained to be a Witcher. Despite Season 4's production being hit with some major casting issues, it appears that Netflix has overcome the hump and shooting may have wrapped on the penultimate season of the popular fantasy series.
Allan shared some hand-drawn sketches of her co-stars on Instagram, possibly confirming that the actress has wrapped shooting on Season 4. The drawings showcase her Rats co-stars. At the end of Season 3, Ciri escaped the Frying Pan desert and was taken in by the ragtag group of teenage criminals. "Mistle, Iskra, Giselher, Reef, Kayleigh, Asse. I love you all. Netflix's The Witcher was developing a spinoff prequel miniseries focused on the Rats. The Rats is reportedly being reworked as a special episode in The Witcher season 4. The Rats joining Ciri's storyline in season 4 offers a new perspective and storytelling opportunity.
The universe of The Witcher will continue to expand thanks to Netflix, and Im excited about one spinoff in particular which might finally happen, though not as initially planned and thats whats exciting. Netflixs The Witcher has been one of the most divisive TV series in the last few years. The Witcher started strong and became one of Netflixs top shows, but the second season deviated too much from the novels of Andrzej Sapkowski, which earned the show a lot of criticism. Despite the backlash, The Witcher has continued its course, and it has also branched out with spinoffs.

The Rats spin-off to be featured as a special standalone episode in The Witcher Season 4. Originally planned as an independent series, the recorded footage will now seemingly be a special episode. The Rats: A Witcher Tale will likely air between season parts or before the season premiere in 2025.

More photos from the set of The Witcher season 4 have found their way online and they offer up a first look at Freya Allan's return as Ciri along with her new companions, The Rats.
As Redanian Intelligence explains, this is almost certainly an adaptation of a scene from the books which sees The Rats ambush a baron's carriage in Nilfgaard. It appears Ciri cuts the throat of the baron's daughter, suggesting she's heading down a darker route in these episodes.
However, this is likely in response to the fact the woman's father is among those who hire Leo Bonhart to hunt Ciri down.
The Rats have also been spotted: Ben Radcliffe's Giselher, Christelle Elwin's Mistle, Aggy K. Adams' Iskra, Fabian McCallum's Kayleigh, Juliette Alexandra's Reef, and Connor Crawford's Asse. Once upon a time, they and Ciri were going to take centre stage in a...

No matter how seasoned of a horror fan you are, there is bound to be at least one movie that makes you squirm. Whether it be that it’s simply too scary, overly gory, or so rooted in reality you can’t bear to watch it any longer. Then there are the movies that play into the everyday fears many of us already have. Things like claustrophobia, heights, or, in this case, rats. Sure, some may like to keep rats and other rodents as pets, but to others, rats are simply gross and creepy — making them the perfect villain of a horror movie. Enter 2002’s The Rats, a vermin-infested nightmare of a film that you probably haven’t seen, but definitely should.

Ciri is nowhere to be found. At least, that what the princess' parent figures Geralt (Henry Cavill) and Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) thought when fans of "The Witcher" last saw them recovering from the battle of Tor Lara. Season 3 of the popular Netflix series ends with the pair poised to head in different directions on a mission to save Ciri. Sorceress Yen takes on the task of rebuilding Aretuza after her mentor's death, while Geralt (soon to be recast with Liam Hemsworth taking over for Cavill) plans to track down The White Flame (Bart Edwards), Aka Ciri's long lost father.
That's all well and good, but it turns out Ciri (Freya Allan) actually ended up somewhere unexpected. After portalling to the desert and lizard-bashing her way out of there with the help of some creepy ghosts (or hallucinations), she ended up kidnapped by bounty hunters.

Veteran Gears of War game designer Cliff Bleszinski continues his wild left turn, as he and Image Comics bring readers Scrapper, the tale of a heroic super-dog and his campaign against a totalitarian dictatorship. Set in the domed city of New Verona, the second issue begins with Scrapper on the run from the brutal, draconic regime Smite, following the apparent deaths of his owners.
Created by Bleszinski – alongside co-writer Alex de Campi and artists Ryan Kelly and Jordie Bellaire – Scrapper tells the tale of a government-experiment-turned-talking-superhero-dog, and his fight against organized crime and fascism. Bizarre as this premise may be, it looks to be shaping up into an interesting balance of elements. Check out the exclusive preview below from Image Comics:

With so much new content being released, one can very easily be forgiven for thinking that Netflix's The Witcher is as on top of the world as Game of Thrones was at the height of its popularity. Indeed, there is good reason for thinking this beyond all the announced spinoffs. Both currently available seasons of Netflix's The Witcher, despite all their flaws, were very well received by fans, with said fans, of course, eagerly watching the third season, which will be Henry Cavill's final time playing Geralt.
Updated August 6, 2023: This article was recently updated by Robin Reynolds with new information regarding the ever-expanding Witcher franchise, including upcoming spinoffs and known details on their releases.
To keep fans sated in the meantime, however, it appears as if Netflix is going the route of spinoffs in an attempt to get as much out of The Witcher franchise as they can.

This post contains spoilers for "The Witcher" season 3 volume 2.
If you're well-versed in the lore of Andrzej Sapkowski's "The Witcher" book series, the final moment of Netflix's season 3 finale might have left you saying some variation of, "Aw, hell yeah!" If you haven't read the books, Ciri's last-minute name-drop perhaps feels a lot less significant, but it's obvious to even the most casual viewers that it's a major moment. After all, it's not Geralt that gets the last word this season, but Ciri, as she introduces herself to the gang of fellow survivors called The Rats after assisting them in the slaughter of their captors. "Call me Falka," she says, just before the credits roll.
This isn't the first time we've heard the name Falka: The character was first mentioned back in season 2, but audiences met her in the penultimate episode of the new season, during Ciri's vision-filled quest through the Korath Desert.

Netflix’s upcoming The Witcher Season 3 has received a brand-new featurette, teasing much higher stakes for Geralt, Yennifer, and Ciri.
Shared by IGN, the video features a new behind-the-scenes look at the highly-anticipated next season of Netflix's hit fantasy series, promising a more faithful adaptation of The Witcher books. It shows Geralt and Yennefer preparing Ciri for the dangerous threat that’s coming for them, improving her combat skills and honing her magical abilities. The cast and executive producers also discussed the much larger scope of Season 3, as different storylines from previous installments begin to converge.

Exclusive: The Sopranos prequel The Many Saints Of Newark has set its final major lead role. Michela De Rossi, the Italian-born actress who made her debut in Boys Cry, has been set to join Alessandro Nivola, Vera Farmiga, Ray Liotta, Jon Bernthal, Corey Stoll, Billy Magnussen, John Magaro, Michael Gandolfini and the just-cast Leslie Odom Jr. in the ensemble drama for New Line. Production gets underway next week in New Jersey and New York.
Details have been scant on many of the big roles, but I’m told De Rossi will play an ambitious Italian immigrant who comes to America and settles in Newark. De Rossi has never acted in the U.S., and her first trip to the states was to audition for this role, which was highly sought after. The filmmakers sparked to a vivacity and authentic feel she brought to it. Boys Cry was a breakout at...

There’s nothing better than silent films accompanied by live music and I’d go as far as saying there’s nothing better than silent films accompanied by the Rats and People Motion Picture Orchestra. When does a funny story become sad? Typically in television, this kind of question is framed around arrested development: A grown man is still acting like he’s in college, and certain events force him to look himself in the mirror and say, “Getting that drunk and acting that dumb isn’t funny anymore. It’s sad.”
But what if it’s not arrested development? What if it’s unstoppable regression? Continuing its fearless quest to address the anxieties associated with aging, “Grace and Frankie” dares to ask if its characters’ wild misadventures aren’t actually funny anymore. Maybe they’re scary. Maybe these two best friends are losing control of their minds, bodies, and lives. Maybe they don’t even know it’s happening, as it’s happening. Maybe they need help.

Three Buster Keaton shorts: The Balloonatic, The Goat, and The High Sign will screen April 10th at 2pm at the Walt Theater in New Haven, Missouri. The films will be accompanied by The Rats and People Motion Picture Orchestra.
There’s nothing better than silent films accompanied by the Rats and People Motion Picture Orchestra. The group is a treasure and St. Louis is lucky to have them here. The group has actively redefined both the local music and film cultures of the area. The ensemble – equal parts indie/punk-stalwart and academically trained composer and musicians – provide life performance of new film scores to classic silent films.
