Before the dawn of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, franchise films used to be made in a far more improvised fashion. Nowadays, we're used to studios and filmmakers having a several-year plan in place for an interlocking series of films and their respective franchises, and while this system can create some very rewarding emotional and narrative payoffs, it doesn't allow for the freedom of spontaneity as much. With this freedom, filmmakers were able to follow their muse to places they previously had never thought of going to, and it's not just characters or moments that were thought up on the fly; in some cases, an entire film came into existence based on a chance encounter.
That's exactly what happened to Kevin Smith during his primary years making films set in his View Askewniverse, named after the View Askew production company he created when he began making movies. Initially, these films were...

Before The Vampire Diaries, Nina Dobrev played a supporting character in Degrassi: The Next Generation, which turned into a series regular. Similar to the many surprises that Dobrev gives fans through her performance juggling different characters in The Vampire Diaries, her first major acting role may also come as a surprise for fans, especially with her iconic sweet smile and dimples. It'd be hard to imagine Dobrev playing a troubled teenager, especially after knowing her performance as Elena Gilbert, the ultimate good person in The Vampire Diaries.

Liz Feldman is back with a new series called “No Good Deed,” and just as she did in her Netflix series “Dead to Me,” she’s set up a pretty good mystery.
Now streaming on Netflix, the show centers on Paul and Lydia, who are trying to sell their very popular and desired home. For them, it’s become haunted after their son was killed there three years earlier.
His death is labeled a casualty of a home invasion, but nothing is quite what it seems on this one. And there are plenty of potential suspects in and around the neighborhood.
Here are the faces you’ll need to know.
Netflix Lydia Morgan (Lisa Kudrow)
Lydia Morgan is a renowned pianist, but after her son is killed, she can’t keep her hands from shaking and temporarily loses her ability to play. She’s brought to life by “Friends” and “Time Bandits” star Lisa Kudrow.

It's the holiday season, so hoop-de-do and dickory dock, and don't forget to hang up your sock so you have more time to rot on the couch in front of the TV watching all of your holiday favorites. Perhaps it's because I'm no longer at the age where turning my hands bright purple to make snowballs or risk popping my hip out of place to go sledding down a hill sound appealing, but the holiday season for me has turned into watching as many festive films and TV shows as my eyeballs can handle and desperately trying not to burn my house down making too many cookies. Unfortunately, watching seasonal movies can be a bit difficult this time of year. Unless a streaming service is trying to entice new subscribers with playlists of the best films in its catalogs, many of these classics end up back on video on demand...

The Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev shocked fans in 2015 by leaving the teen supernatural drama on The CW in its sixth season. The adaptation based on the popular series of vampire novels by L.J. Smith continued for two more seasons without her. That was unexpected, at least given Hollywood conventional wisdom. Dobrev's character, Elena Gilbert, one of many she played, lost her parents in a car crash and served as the series' main protagonist. Critics and fans wondered if the drama could continue with the rest of the ensemble cast.
The other central characters were vampire brothers Damon and Stefan Salvatore, played by Ian Somerhalder and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Paul Wesley. The show later reveals Stefan arrived after the accident and saved Elena. Throughout The Vampire Diaries, Elena finds herself in a love triangle with the two brothers as they attempt to protect her from supernatural forces threatening her town.

Note: This story contains spoilers from the “Brilliant Minds” series premiere.
“Brilliant Minds” introduces Zachary Quinto as Dr. Oliver Wolf, a neurologist whose unique life and skillset is loosely drawn from the acclaimed Oliver Sacks — down to the complex relationships laid out the NBC procedural’s pilot.
“It’s a contemporary version of that character, but it’s not biographical,” showrunner Michael Grassi told TheWrap. “Oliver Sacks lived such a … robust, incredible life and to have that as inspiration, and as a jumping off point has been so helpful … to build this really fascinating character at the center of our medical show.”
Pulling from access to two of Sack’s books — “The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat” and “An Anthropologist on Mars” — Grassi drew from Sacks’ prosopagnosia, also known as face blindness, to craft Oliver’s character. The cognitive disorder, which is revealed in the premiere episode,...

Degrassi: The Next Generation was certainly no stranger to controversial subject matter throughout its fourteen-season run. But in 2004, the show aired what arguably became its most notorious episode, which was banned from the American airwaves for over two years. Titled "Accidents Will Happen," the episode aired in two parts on CTV in Canada but wouldn't see the light of day on the U.S. network that aired Degrassi episodes during its original release.
This refusal to air the episode sparked outrage among loyal Degrassi fans in America. That's not to mention confusion among the show's actors and creative staff, who couldn't understand why this episode, more so than any other, was deemed too much for American audiences to handle. However, anyone familiar enough with U.S. politics over the years could probably guess what had happened. After all, "Accidents Will Happen" dealt with one of the most polarizing topics in American society: teen pregnancy.

Cadet Kelly is a 2002 Disney Channel film starring Hilary Duff that people have read as containing queer-coded themes for years. In Cadet Kelly, Kelly goes to a military school against her will. Her personality clashes with Captain Jessica Stone, with whom she has a love-hate relationship. The movie contains scenes, motifs, and themes that resonate among the LGBTQ+ community.
The 2000s were filled with many classic romantic and comedy movies about teenage life. Mean Girls is a clear example of a high school-set film transcending time. However, Cadet Kelly, released on Disney Channel in 2002, was a unique approach to the genre. Not only does the film occur in a female military academy, which already goes against gender expectations, but Cadet Kelly also mainly focuses on female relationships, healthy family dynamics, and teenage identity.

Francine Pascal, the author best known for creating hit teen book series “Sweet Valley High,” has died. She was 92.
Pascal died on Sunday in New York, the New York Times reports. The cause of death was lymphoma Pascal’s daughter, Laurie Wenk-Pascal, told the newspaper.
“Sweet Valley High” debuted in 1983 after a friend remarked to Pascal there was no teen version of 1980s soap “Dallas.” Pascal was reportedly inspired to create the series, about blonde Californian twins Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield, immediately. The books went on to spawn hundreds of sequels and spin-offs detailing the twins at different ages, ranging from middle school to college. There were also some wackier books which saw the twins mixed up in murders and even supernatural events.

“CW Forever” and “CW Gold” are offered through Amazon’s free streaming platform, Freevee. (Graphic by The Desk)
Nexstar Media Group’s CW Network has launched its latest free, ad-supported streaming television (Fast) channels through Amazon’s Fast platform, Freevee.
The channels — CW Gold and CW Forever — were quietly added to Freevee last week, The Desk can confirm. It marks the latest effort by the CW Network to build out its Fast business since broadcaster Nexstar acquired a majority stake in the network two years ago.
Distribution terms of the deal between the CW Network and Amazon were not available. The two channels were not initially offered through the CW Network’s own Fast platform — which recently became available through the CW app for Apple TV and iPhones — but the channels appeared on the web version of the CW Fast platform a few hours after this story was first published.

Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from the Season 6 finale of The CW’s All American and the Season 3 premiere of All American: Homecoming.
There are some shakeups happening in the All American universe.
Season 6 of the flagship series ended Monday night with the departure of its star Daniel Ezra, who has led the show as Spencer James for six seasons. With Ezra gone, the show will be taking a new direction that returns to its high school roots, focusing on telling the stories of some newly introduced younger characters.
That doesn’t necessarily mean that the entire original cast is taking a backseat. As the show is making this transition, showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll recognizes “you don’t want to do a clean sweep.”

Andrea Lewis is looking back on starring alongside Hilary Duff in the Disney Channel Original Movie Cadet Kelly and the film’s newfound resonance.
In the 2002 film, Duff portrays Kelly Collins, who is forced by her new stepfather to enroll in the George Washington Military School as a means of teaching her discipline. While she struggles to adjust to the new environment and has a rival in her commanding officer (Christy Carlson Romano), Duff’s Kelly befriends Carla (Lewis).
When reflecting on the role in the beloved Disney film, Lewis said she was “very excited” for the project.
“I loved Disney Channel, loved Even Stevens, loved Lizzie McGuire … I was a [The] Famous Jett Jackson fanatic. I loved the content,” she told People magazine. “So when the movie came in — and I guess this is me revealing something about myself — because I was an actor as a kid, I would more so look at the basics.

Television shows that allow their characters to grow alongside their audiences hold a unique place in the hearts of viewers. They are mostly coming-of-age series that slowly evolve from simpler beginnings into more mature narratives that mirror the growing complexity of their characters and their fans. They start with one or more main characters at early life stages and explore deeper themes and more challenging issues as those characters age, reflecting the journey of growing up.
Boy Meets World is a great example of a series that evolves naturally from themes of adolescence to high school and eventually college. As Cory and his friends grow, the storylines mature to address issues such as underage drinking and career choices. Similarly, Gilmore Girls follows the dynamic mother-daughter duo of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore from Rory's high school years into her post-college life, delving into topics like family bonds, professional ambition and love...

Degrassi: The Next Generation was certainly no stranger to controversial subject matter throughout its fourteen-season run, but in 2004, it aired what arguably became its most notorious episode, which was banned from the American airwaves for over two years. Titled "Accidents Will Happen," the episode aired in two parts on CTV in Canada but wouldn't see the light of day on the U.S. network that aired Degrassi episodes during its original release.
This refusal to air the episode sparked outrage among loyal Degrassi fans in America, not to mention confusion among the show's actors and creative staff, who couldn't understand why this episode, more so than any other, was deemed too much for American audiences to handle. Of course, anyone with more than passing familiarity with American politics over the years could probably guess what had happened. After all, "Accidents Will Happen" dealt with one of the most polarizing...

April began with showers, plus a tiny regional earthquake on the East Coast, but that didn’t keep anyone away from theaters, even if it was a slower weekend than much of March. Read on for the weekend box office report.
There was little surprise that Warner Bros.’ “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” would win its second weekend at #1. Despite dropping 60% from its fantastic opening weekend, it still was able to take first place with an estimated $31.7 million to bring its total to $135 million after crossing the $100 million mark in its first week. It also passed the $361 million mark globally, with another $59.3 million grossed overseas this weekend.
The weekend offered two new wide releases in Dev Patel‘s directorial debut, the action-thriller “Monkey Man,” and 20th Century’s horror prequel “The First Omen,” the former released into 3,029 theaters vs. “The First Omen’s” 3,375 theaters. “Monkey Man” came into the...

Vanessa Morgan isn’t saying goodbye to The CW any time soon. After spending over six years portraying Southside Serpent Toni Topaz on the network’s quirky Archie Comics-inspired teen drama Riverdale, the actress has found a home on a new CW series: Wild Cards.
The Canadian-American series, which is co-produced with CBS and currently airs weekly, is part crime-solving procedural, part comedy, and part will-they/won’t-they? romance. Morgan stars as Max Mitchell, a clever and charismatic con artist who teams up with no-nonsense cop Cole Ellis (Giacomo Gianniotti) to solve crimes in exchange for staying out of jail.
At the 2024 Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour, Morgan — who’s previously appeared on shows like Finding Carter, Degrassi: The Next Generation, A.N.T. In 2004, Degrassi: The Next Generation aired what would become their most controversial episode with “Accidents Will Happen,” which premiered in Canada in two parts on January 26 and February 9, 2004. However, the episode would not see the light of day on Degrassi’s U.S. network, The N, for another two years. This sparked outrage among Degrassi fans and confusion among the show’s stars, who couldn’t understand why, out of every sensitive topic Degrassi had touched upon, the storyline in “Accidents Will Happen” was too much for America to handle.

On January 26, 2004, Canadian television drama Degrassi: The Next Generation aired a highly controversial episode. The two-part episode "Accidents Will Happen" centers around young Manny Santos (Cassie Steele), who discovers she is pregnant and feels conflicted about what to do next. Part one of the episode follows as she discovers her pregnancy and weighs her options. With the stomach flu going around, she initially doesn't see her symptoms as anything but that. Still, when her friend Emma (Miriam McDonald) asks why she hasn't had her period, Manny realizes she may be pregnant. After a pregnancy test confirms her suspicions, Manny tells the father, Craig Manning (Jake Epstein), who, to her surprise, supports having a baby.

Gear up for a new season of Amazon’s breakout action hit Reacher, which is based on the popular novels by Lee Child that served as the basis for Tom Cruise’s attempted franchise, Jack Reacher. Although Cruise’s film adaptation was able to capitalize with the sequel, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Prime Video’s Reacher series aimed to stick closer to the novels and presents a new case for each season. For example, major characters from season one, like Roscoe and Oscar Finlay, will not play prominent roles in this season. Drake, 36, has faced skepticism over the years for his friendship with “Stranger Things” actress Millie Bobby Brown, 19. On new track “Another Late Night,” Drake fires back at those who side-eye the rapper befriending a then-13-year-old Brown after first meeting in Australia back in 2017.

Lea Thompson and Stacey Farber shined in the new mystery series, The Spencer Sisters. The series combined light-hearted crime drama with family angst well.
The Spencer Sisters Season 1 Episode 1 introduced both Darby and Victoria Spencer and hinted at why they had been estranged.
As an introductory chapter, the series did a decent job previewing the issues our leading ladies may have and what motivated them to go into the private investigation business together.
The Spencer Sisters was similar to many of Canada's other breezy procedurals, where private investigators solve crimes, typically bloodless ones, with plenty of humor sprinkled in. It reminded me of Private Eyes, which made sense since Alan McCullough created and produced both series.
The CW was fortunate to pick this series up since programming was lacking this fall during the strike. It fits right in with their programming, and both actresses have a massive fanbase.

Drake played a behind-the-scenes role as an executive producer for Netflix's Top Boy revival, helping to bring the show back after it was canceled by Channel 4. Drake's most hands-on role is promoting the show and using his fame to bring in new audiences, while he leaves the direction and writing to the original creative team. Despite not acting in the show, one of Drake's songs, "Behind Barz," appears on the Top Boy soundtrack. It gained over 40 million streams prior to its official release and generated attention for the show.
Rapper and actor Drake played a prominent role in Netflix’s Top Boy revival. The British crime drama Top Boy tells the story of Dushane and Sully, two best friends who partake in drug dealing and gang violence in the Summerhouse estate of the London Borough of Hackney. The first two seasons aired in 2011 and 2013 with only four episodes each.

Drake got very philosophical in an Instagram video posted Wednesday after being was asked what his biggest fear is.
“I’ve never really had a good answer for it, but my answer was that all this is for nothing. Kind of the idea that like, one day life ends and it just all goes black,” the rapper explained in the video. “And I guess that question like, sent me, you know, obviously deep into a spiral of thought. And it makes me think about my life and how surreal it feels at times.”
He proceeded to reflect on a life-changing audition he had for a TV show when he was “13 or 14.”
“I go back to this day when I was like 13 or 14. I had an audition for a TV show that ultimately shaped my life and before my audition, I went to this kid’s house and I – out of,...

Degrassi: The Next Generation star Jake Epstein has reflected on the impact of the series both on society at large and his own life. The long-running high school drama is one in a long line of Canadian television series that began with The Kids of Degrassi Street (1979-1986) and includes Degrassi Junior High (1987–1989), Degrassi High (1989–1991), Degrassi: The Next Generation (2001–2015), and Degrassi: Next Class (2016–2017). Epstein played Craig Manning, the musician stepson of returning character Joey Jeremiah (Pat Mastroianni), for 91 episodes between seasons 2 and 8.
TV Insider recently sat down with Epstein ahead of the release of his new Hallmark rom-com The Wedding Contract. During their conversation, he reflected on the fact that he "spent more time on set filming at Degrassi than I was in my actual high school." He also shared that he is proud to be a part of such a "cornerstone of Canadian entertainment" that meant so much to so many people.
