A Forgotten Mark Wahlberg Flop Was A Remake Of Audrey Hepburn's Best Movie
Image
Audrey Hepburn's 1963 comedy thriller "Charade" was not only one of the actress' best movies, but it was one of the best movies to come out of that entire year. Famously described as "the best Hitchcock movie Hitchcock never made," the movie was a major critical and audience hit. It also won Hepburn a British Film Academy Award for best actress, and won writer Peter Stone an Edgar Allan Poe Award for best motion picture screenplay.

The 2002 mystery film, "The Truth About Charlie," was a remake of "Charade" that sought to achieve the same level of success as the original. This one starred Thandiwe Newton in Hepburn's role, and Mark Wahlberg in Cary Grant's. Wahlberg's character may technically have a different name as Grant's character, but he's written to be as sneaky and charming as the role that marked the end of era for Grant. Despite both Walhberg and...

A Forgotten Supernatural Horror Movie Features One Of The Best Opening Scenes Ever
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Ghost Ship."

In 2002, Steve Beck's "Ghost Ship" sailed into theaters and became a decent commercial success, grossing $68.3 million at the global box office against a $20 million budget. It was no critical darling either, as the film seemed more preoccupied with scary special effects (which look dated now) than telling a coherent story that leaves a strong impression. Still, while "Ghost Ship" is not the kind of horror movie you watch for its riveting plot, it makes for a perfectly enjoyable slasher that doesn't adhere to logic or practicality. It's also derivative as heck for the most part, although "Ghost Ship" doesn't pretend to be something it isn't. The film unabashedly embraces its gimmick-laden B-movie roots and plays as a typical 2000s horror movie, swapping out competent storytelling for ultra-stylized gore.

Sometimes, though, even a thoroughly mediocre horror flick like "Ghost Ship" can feature a cold...

Image
New casting information has just been revealed for the Prison Break offshoot that's in the works at Hulu. The project has a pilot that's currently being put into development, though the reboot hasn't yet been officially ordered to series.

Per Variety, the new Prison Break pilot has cast Emily Browning (American Gods), Lukas Gage (Dead Boy Detectives), and Drake Rodger (Landman) in major roles. While the show is set in the same universe as the original Prison Break, it was expected that it would follow a new cast of characters, and these additions mark the first names to be attached to the project. It's not yet clear if any original Prison Break actors will be making special appearances, but more casting information is likely to soon be released with actors starting to sign on for the pilot.

Full details have not been revealed about the plot of the Prison Break reboot,...

Lilly Hiatt ‘Forever’ Review: An Unrelentingly Focused and Electrifying Rock Album
Image
On her sixth studio album, Forever, Lilly Hiatt explores themes of isolation, self-identity, and domestic bliss. Based on that description, you might think you know what it sounds like: quiet, intimate, and replete with sparse acoustic finger-picking and tenderly sung, soul-baring lyrics. While Hiatt has always been an exceptionally vulnerable songwriter, what Forever adds to her repertoire is its unrelenting barrage of brawling guitars, punkish attitude, and hopped-up melodicism. It’s by far Hiatt’s most exhilarating album, as if filling her psyche with ringing, distorted noise was the only way she could think of to crowd out her demons.

Hiatt’s music often gets slapped with the Americana label, but she’s built an eclectic oeuvre that includes a good number of kick-ass rock songs. Forever, though, is her first full-on rock album, and it’s as bracing as a splash of cold water to the face. The sub-...

The Challenge fans blast Season 40 final as a ‘joke’ and ‘one of the worst’ due to twist and format
Image
Fans of The Challenge expressed frustration with the Battle of the Eras final due to its format and a unique twist introduced earlier in the season.

The first part of the final officially began in the recently aired episode End of an Era Part 1, as the eight finalists started onboard the Sinister ship.

The finalists included former winners Johnny Bananas, Jordan Wiseley, Jenny West, Tori Deal, and Rachel Robinson, as well as first-time MTV finalists Kyland Young, Michele Fitzgerald, and Derek Chavez.

Host Tj Lavin introduced them to the various tasks they’d compete in, which included swimming back and forth from the ship to various locations to complete checkpoints.

After each checkpoint, Tj informed the competitors who finished first through fourth place for the men and women.

However, at the start of the final, Tj informed them that castmates had cast Karma votes throughout the season, which would determine who won.

Forget Ghost Ship Wes Craven Gave Us the Best Horror Opening
Image
Quick Links Why Wishmaster's Disturbing Opening Outdoes Ghost Ship How Wishmaster is an Underrated Wes Craven Cult Classic What Modern Horror Movies Can Learn From Wishmaster Wes Craven is the Master of Horror Openings

Ghost Ship's initial minutes are often regarded as the best horror movie opening, but arguably, horror icon Wes Craven gave audiences something better. The art of the opening can be grossly underrated and taken for granted by audiences. Filmmakers don't have more than a few moments to capture moviegoers, keep them gripping their seats, and convince them to see where things are going. When it comes to horror movies, the best usually have an iconic opening kill or a thrilling villain to let people know what they're in for. Ghost Ship's opening is undeniably slick and creative, often remembered as the film's standout moment. However, revisiting Wes Craven's Wishmaster reveals an opening that terrifies,...

‘The Demon Disorder’ Review (Shudder)
Image
Stars: Charles Cottier, Dirk Hunter, Christian Willis, John Noble, Tobie Webster | Written by Steven Boyle, Toby Osborne | Directed by Steven Boyle

The Demon Disorder marks the directorial debut of Steven Boyle, it’s also his first credit as a writer, or rather co-writer along with Toby Osborne. He’s no stranger to film though, or to horror for that matter, having effects and makeup credits on films ranging from Daybreakers and Ghost Ship to Boar and Two Heads Creek. And he’s channelled that experience into a tale of dark secrets and demonic activity somewhere in the Outback.

It begins with a nightmare of an old man shackled to his bed turning into a waking nightmare as Phillip wakes up and finds his brother Jake in the barn looking at one of their pigs, skinned but still alive.

This prompts Jake to visit their other brother, Graham. Graham left the...

Why Ghost Ship Still Has Horror's Best Opening Scene
Image
Ghost Ship's opening sequence remains unmatched due to its violent shock factor and unique VFX tricks in the horror genre. The film pays homage to iconic horror director William Castle, integrating tradition with modern-day CGI to create a timeless masterpiece. Those who enjoyed Ghost Ship's opening scene must check out The Fog, 1408, or 13 Ghosts for similarly immersive ghost stories and claustrophobic horror.

Ghost Ship is an overlooked horror movie of the early 2000s that delivers one of the most emblematic opening sequences of the century so far. Horror films tend to open in one of two ways: either with a slow build or a sudden shock. The former is a little safer since there's no risk of peaking too early, but the latter has the potential to get people talking. Director John Carpenter often started his movies with comparatively flashy moments, notably Michael Myers' eye view of his...

House on Haunted Hill (1999) – The Test of Time
Image
From one 1999 horror remake to another. After rewatching The Haunting with eyes that were both more critical and 25 years older, it got me thinking about the other remake that came out that year. One that was a remake of a far sillier movie and that was the first effort from a new studio, namely Dark Castle Entertainment. The original was from a far less dark castle in that of schlock and gimmick purveyor William Castle and it starred Vincent Price as a man offering strangers money to stay in an allegedly haunted house for a night. While The Haunting failed on multiple levels to improve with age, how does House on Haunted Hill (watch it Here) look after a quarter of a century? Does its cheesy yet graphic tone feel at home in the time of A24 and elevated horror or should it forfeit its 1 million dollar check and leave the cursed grounds forever.

The popularity of Arrowhead Game Studio’s Helldivers 2 is not hidden from anyone. This game is gradually increasing and getting better with every passing day. One thing that’s not happening is that it’s not coming to Xbox consoles anytime soon. Despite a bunch of Xbox owners asking for a port again and again, both developer Arrowhead Game Studios and publisher Sony have chosen not to respond.

As they wait for a response, Xbox owners are no doubt getting restless, and it makes sense too. The game has already been out for more than a month, and there’s no news of Xbox ports anywhere. Hence, these fans have decided to go the other way, finding a similar experience on Xbox itself. And Reddit has responded with three games as the best choices for this purpose.

Redditors define these Xbox games as their replacement for Helldivers 2 A still from...

Helldivers 2 is an incredible game; there’s no doubt about this. This game owes its growing success to a bunch of factors. The fact that this game is so approachable and easy to get into is one of the factors. The fact that its developers are continuously allowing this game to grow in unexpected directions is another. Not only are PlayStation 5 and PC owners loving it, but Xbox owners are also asking for its release on their preferred console.

The best part about Helldivers 2 is its ever-growing nature. This game is continuously changing thanks to its special scenario director, Joel. Its popularity is such that developers are already getting requests for a crossover. Whom should they go with?

What game should Helldivers 2 cross over with?

A still from Helldivers 2

It’s nothing new if a developer decides to cross over their title with some other game. It never hurts a...

Gothika (2003) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
The episode of Best Horror Movie You Never Saw covering Gothika was Written and Edited by Paul Bookstaber, Narrated by Kier Gomes, Produced by John Fallon and Tyler Nichols, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

Back in the late 90’s, early 2000s the horror genre was in that weird phase of encapsulating what it truly wanted to be. Hot off the heels of Scream, horror movies focused much more on the teenage angst, and lifestyle. But there comes a time when some hidden gems make their way to the silver screen that branch off the beaten path with a more adult-themed tale, drenched in psychological/mental horror. What if one day you’re living your average life, working your 9-5, and suddenly black, out only to wake up, institutionalized and accused of committing a crime you can’t seem to remember doing? In 2003, director Mathieu Kassovitz gave us a True...

Is Ghost Ship Based On A True Story?
Image
Ghost Ship is not based on any specific true stories, although treasure hunters do often search for shipwrecks to pilfer their luxury cargo, providing the perfect trove for those who aren't risk-averse. The allure of sunken treasure and greed is at the heart of Ghost Ship's Faustian tale, as each member makes a pact for riches and ends up hastening their own demise. There are several historical lost ship stories that could have inspired Ghost Ship, such as the H.L. Hunley and the USS Cyclops, adding to the film's authenticity and historical intrigue.

After Ghost Ship opens with a horrifying bloodbath in 1962 aboard the Italian ocean liner Ms Antonia Graza, it follows the crew of a salvage ship as they explore the now derelict vessel, prompting some fans to wonder if the supernatural horror film was based on a true story. When a weather service pilot named Jack...

10 Must-Watch Horror Movies Set at Sea
Image
When looking for a good fright, watching a horror flick is an easy way to get some sufficient scares, but walking off of a sandy beach and wading into the salty waters of the sea can just as easily be its own chilling experience. Oceans make up 71 percent of the Earth's surface, and with over 4/5ths of those waters still uncharted, the unknowns that may lurk in those vast waters may be just as frightening as the fictional films inspired by them.

Horror movies that are set at sea take the mysteries of the murky depths below the ocean's surface and add their own additional horrors to create a sinking feeling in one's gut. Whether employing an existing oceanic fear of a shark attack as the iconic film Jaws did or creating a new marine monstrosity like the Cthulhu-like creature in Underwater, taking a dip in the water has never been more terrifying.

‘Haunting of the Queen Mary’ Review – Gary Shore Chills the Bones with an Overstuffed Supernatural Voyage
Image
The retired Rms Queen Mary docked in Long Beach, California is considered one of the most haunted locations in the world — which only somewhat shines through in Gary Shore’s Haunting of the Queen Mary. Any wishes to relive Dark Castle Entertainment levels of production design in Ghost Ship won’t be fulfilled, but that said, Haunting of the Queen Mary is more successful than its brushed-under-the-rug release undersells. Shore and co-writer Tom Vaughan channel the Queen Mary’s grave history for a supernatural infestation that spans decades, complete with atmospheric haunts akin to what’s accomplished in remakes of Thir13en Ghosts or House on Haunted Hill. Proper spookiness prevails, even though the over two-hour length gunks up the film’s gears with subplots that slow momentum.

Alice Eve stars as Anne Calder, who pitches Queen Mary’s Captain Bittner (Dorian Lough) on a virtual 3D tour experience to resurrect the ship’s reputation.

Review: The Last Voyage of the Demeter is Based on a Book You Might Like
Image
Back in the early 2000s, audiences could treat themselves to a near-endless array of middlebrow, high-concept films every week. Pitch Black (2000), Reign of Fire (2002), Ghost Ship (2002), and every Final Destination film are just a handful of the offerings released during this era – some of which hold a special place in fans’ hearts. Whether it was a man with an ocular transplant fighting nocturnal aliens on a faraway world, or a bearded Matthew McConaughey jumping into the maw of a marauding dragon, it was easy to take for granted the embarrassment of riches at our collective moviegoing fingertips. Above all, these films presented an opportunity to set your mind to a low-thought mode and just enjoy the images unfurling in front of you in an endless stream of violent bliss.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter is a throwback to yesteryear, a film that seems like it would’ve done gangbusters...

9 Actors We Forgot Were In The Riddick Movies
Image
Vin Diesel might be the name that towers over The Chronicles of Riddick franchise, but it includes many excellent actors whom people forget had anything to do with it. Diesel's break-out role as intergalactic criminal Richard B. Riddick debuted in Pitch Black, a sleeper hit in 2000 that featured a small cast and scope due to budget constraints, but its popularity allowed for an increase to both for its 2004 sequel The Chronicles of Riddick. With more world-building came more recognizable actors, and by the time the third movie Riddick premiered in 2013, it was full of familiar faces who have even more prominent careers today.

With Riddick as the central protagonist, the franchise isn't known for the same cast camaraderie as Diesel's Fast & Furious series, but his lone-wolf personality presents an opportunity for a revolving door of performers with him to interact as he makes his way across the galaxy. Looking...

Thailand’s Censors Get Heavy With Horror Film ‘Hoon Payon’
Image
Thailand’s film censors have upset the release of local horror movie “Hoon Payon,” which should have arrived in cinemas pn Thursday.

The film had a successful world premiere screening on Tuesday at a gala in Bangkok. But censors have since intervened to demand five scenes be cut and to impose a 20+ rating on the Five Star Production picture.

The rating means that spectators must be age 20 or older, thus excluding the film’s key teenage demographic, and it obliges cinema operators to check the ID cards of all patrons.

The film’s story involves a man who travels to a village in a border region where his brother, a novice Buddhist monk, has been accused of murder. As more bodies pile up, the man questions the villagers’ blind faith in a supposedly protective doll or mannequin.

The scenes that have caused offense involve the fictional monk engaging in heated...

HBO Max New Releases: March 2023
Image
There’s nothing quite like when HBO is airing one of its trademark watercooler-worthy dramas weekly. Thankfully, we’ll get to it experience exactly that and more on HBO Max in March 2023.

The big ticket item on HBO Max this March is undoubtedly Succession Season 4 on March 26. Part prestige drama and part screwball comedy, Succession is about as fun a watch as they come. Season 4 of the series about egregious wealth will find the Roy siblings reeling after trying and failing to take down their father, Logan (Brian Cox).

HBO Max’s other major TV option this month is another weekly release from HBO. Matthew Rhys returns as the titular lawyer in Perry Mason Season 2 on March 6. Season 1 of this period piece reboot flexed the classic TV character’s detective skills. From the look of the trailer, it seems as though this is the year Perry makes his name in the court room.
