Super Bowl Lix on Sunday will bring in the biggest TV audience of the year — and, following the game, the biggest audience ever for Fox’s game show The Floor.
Those are pretty much immutable facts in the TV landscape. The Super Bowl is, by enormous margins, the most-watched single telecast of any given year. And the show that airs after it gets a big audience as well, typically placing among the top five entertainment telecasts on network or cable TV that season.
The post-game slot has been a showcase for decades, but it wasn’t always that way. In the early years of the Super Bowl, whichever network aired the game (CBS and NBC shared NFL rights back then) went to its regular Sunday night programming afterward — in three of the Super Bowl’s first four years, that meant an episode of Lassie on CBS.
Eventually, though, broadcasters figured...

Luke Combs’ touring drummer Jake Sommers is the latest musician to take on Drumeo’s “For the First Time” challenge, being tasked with playing “Stranded” by French metal masters Gojira.
Sommers’ main gig may be country music, but he seems fairly well versed in rock music. At first, Drumeo host Brandon Toews presents songs by Korn and Porcupine Tree, but Sommers quickly recognizes each, defeating the purpose of the challenge, which is to get drummers to play along to a song they never heard before.
Then, the beginning of Gojira’s “Stranded” is played for Sommers, who responds, “I didn’t know that, whatever that was,” triggering laughter from the sound booth.
“Such a cruel game,” jokes Toews, aware of the difficulty of the song Sommers landed on.
From there, Sommers proceeds to transcribe, using actual pen and paper, the song’s complex rhythms and time signature changes (a Gojira...

Catering directly to my interests, the Criterion Channel’s January lineup boasts two of my favorite things: James Gray and cats. In the former case it’s his first five features (itself a terrible reminder he only released five movies in 20 years); the latter shows felines the respect they deserve, from Kuroneko to The Long Goodbye, Tourneur’s Cat People and Mick Garris’ Sleepwalkers. Meanwhile, Ava Gardner, Bertrand Tavernier, Isabel Sandoval, Ken Russell, Juleen Compton, George Harrison’s HandMade Films, and the Sundance Film Festival get retrospectives.
Restorations of Soviet sci-fi trip Ikarie Xb 1, The Unknown, and The Music of Regret stream, as does the recent Plan 75. January’s Criterion Editions are Inside Llewyn Davis, Farewell Amor, The Incredible Shrinking Man, and (most intriguingly) the long-out-of-print The Man Who Fell to Earth, Blu-rays of which go for hundreds of dollars.

Writer/director Meshal Aljaser’s Naga had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival back in September, and we’ve learned today that it’s now coming to Netflix.
Naga will begin streaming exclusively on Netflix Thursday, December 7.
In the Saudi genre film, “Stranded amid Riyadh’s desert dunes, Sarah, a local Saudi girl, escapes heartaches and the vengeance of a vigorous camel after discreetly sneaking out of her parent’s home for a romantic date that landed her astray.”
Adwa Bader, Khalid Bin Shaddad, Amal Alharbi and Yazeed Almajyul star.
Joe Lipsett reviewed Naga for Bloody Disgusting out of TIFF, raving: “Between the virtuoso camerawork and the ticking clock, Naga‘s closest spiritual comparison is the adrenaline rush of Run Lola Run.” Joe’s review continues, “Naga is an incredibly exciting, dynamic thriller featuring an assured performance from lead actress Adwa Bader.

The story has been told several times in the famous 1990s movie, “Alive,” the excellent documentary “Stranded,” and hell, arguably even “Yellowjackets” borrows its core premise from the story of Air Force Flight 571, which went down in the Chilean Andes mountains in 1972, filled with 45 passengers many of them who were young soccer players on their way to a match.

This article contains spoilers for the first two episodes of Silo.
The Apple TV+ series Silo is set in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity has been forced into an underground silo because the outside world has become toxic.
The silo’s inhabitants don’t know how the world became toxic or who built the silo that became their salvation, nor are they allowed to ask questions about it. People are permitted to explore the outside if they demand it, but there are no take-backs once the request has been made. The sensors that show the barren wasteland on the other side of the airlock do a pretty good job of deterring even the more curious citizens of the silo, but there are still those who question whether what they see outside is reality.
If you’re already intrigued by the premise of this series from the first two episodes and...

MipTV 2023 is coming to an end, with many international execs and stars having jetted in for the 60th edition of the sales confab and Canneseries events. Despite large portions of the Croisette being dug up amidst reams of construction work before the Cannes Film Festival, there was a positive feel. That will please organizer Rx France, which has faced down of ongoing talk of the event’s reduced status in the post-Covid-19 era. Footfall was notably lighter than pre-pandemic, but a less frenetic pace isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Read on for our key takeaways.
Scripted Slowdown Is Real
“The TV bubble has burst,” said Studiocanal boss Anna Marsh, who delivered the weighty proclamation during a keynote on Monday afternoon. Her refreshingly candid admission, a reference to the end of the high-end TV drama boom, was echoed by many of the execs Deadline chatted with throughout the week in Cannes.

Exclusive: Australian network Seven has picked up Stranded on Honeymoon Island, the new adventure dating format from Married at First Sight creator Snowman Productions.
Seven has swooped for the format on the eve of Mip TV and more territory deals are incoming.
Distributed by Married at First Sight seller Red Arrow Studios International, Stranded sees four couples matched by experts following a speed dating event who are taken to a deserted tropical island, where they have to live together and fend for themselves with few resources. The original launched on Belgium’s Vtm last month and doubled the network’s audience share for the 15-34 year old demo, according to Red Arrow.
Snowman will set up and manage a southeast Asian production hub from where all versions will be produced. Endemol Shine Australia is behind Seven’s version.

In 1812, a novel called The Swiss Family Robinson was published. In 1965, a reimagining of this story was told through a television series titled Lost in Space. And in 2018, a reimagining of that series premiered on Netflix.

Lost in Space focuses on a family of space colonists, and they have certainly experienced some high highs and low lows while on their adventures off of Earth. While fans wait for the third and final to drop, they can imagine what houses these characters would end up in, if they were part of the Sorting Ceremony at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry!

With Timeless‘ two-hour series finale fast approaching (though not fast enough, frankly), we decided to cut to the chase and seek out intel on its very final scene.
Season 2 of the NBC drama ended last May with a doozy of a cliffhanger: Future versions of Lucy and Wyatt arrived in the present-day bunker with a potential plan to save their dead teammate Rufus. NBC’s decision not to renew the series for Season 3 threatened to keep Rufus’ fate forever in flux, but closure was ultimately offered in the form of a double-episode finale event, airing Thursday, Dec. 20 at 8/7c.

The most beautiful words ever spoken about Aretha Franklin came from her friend and producer Luther Vandross, back in 1982: “This woman ain’t entertainment. She’s done opened the books to my life and told everybody. Like Roberta Flack used to say in ‘Killing Me Softly,’ ‘I thought he found my letters and read them all out loud.’ She was the spokesperson for a lot of people and how they feel.” Aretha made countless listeners people feel that way, which is why she reigned as the greatest rock, pop or soul singer ever.

It’s true; no matter what certain networks may claim about their “winter finales,” winter doesn’t actually start until December 21, and isn’t over until March 20. Syfy, at least, understands this, and has announced their appropriately-titled winter schedule accordingly.
Happily this means that, starting on Monday, January 14, 2013, we will have some great television to get us through the cold months, including the return of Being Human and Lost Girl, and the premiere of Continuum, and later in the week, the return of Ghost Hunters and Face Off.
Here’s the schedule of premieres, along with series synopses:
Syfy’S 2013 Winter Programming Highlighted By Series Premieres Of Ghost Mine, Robot Combat League, Stranded And Continuum Season Returns Of Hits Being Human, Face Off, Total Blackout, Ghost Hunters, Lost Girl, Haunted Collector And Final Season Of Merlin
