There has been a rise in Bible-based tales and series, with shows such as Dallas Jenkins' The Chosen leading the way. Fox has gotten in on the act, as the network has announced its first cast members for its anticipated Biblical event series The Faithful, from Carol Mendelsohn. Per reports, Minnie Driver, Jeffrey Donovan, and Natacha Karam are all attached to star in the first part of the three-part series, which will look to tell some of the most iconic tales from the Old Testament from the lens of its most influential women. The six-episode Biblical limited series will see Driver play Sarah, Donovan will portray Abraham and Karam is set as Hagar in the series' first part. It will be directed and executive produced by Danny Cannon.

Updated: The upcoming Fox event series “The Faithful” has found its first three cast members.

Minnie Driver, Jeffrey Donovan, and Natacha Karam are all attached to star in the first part of the three-part series. Driver will play Sarah, Donovan will play Abraham, and Karam will play Hagar. The official description for first installment states:

“Sarah feels incomplete without the child that has been promised to her and her husband, Abraham, by God. After braving isolation, famine, the ire of Pharaoh, and several more years of barrenness, she resorts to her own plan to bring a child into the world involving her maidservant Hagar (Karam) and Abraham. However, jealousy soon sets in after Hagar gives birth to Ishmael (from whose lineage the Islamic religion traces its roots). Minnie Driver has joined “Emily in Paris” Season 5, Variety has learned exclusively.

The fifth season of the popular Netflix drama series was announced in September 2024, with production kicking off earlier in May in Rome. Lily Collins once again returns as Emily. The cast for Season 5 also includes: Lucas Bravo, Lucien Laviscount, Eugenio Franceschini, Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, Samuel Arnold, Bruno Gouery, William Abadie and Ashley Park.

Driver will play Princess Jane, described as “A friend of Sylvie’s (Leroy-Beaulieu) who married into a royal family.”

Driver is best known for her film roles, including her Oscar nominated performance in “Good Will Hunting.” She has also been in films like “Owning Mahowny,” the 2004 version of “The Phantom of the Opera,” and 2021’s live-action “Cinderella.” In television, Driver has starred in shows like the FX series “The Riches,” the ABC sitcom “Speechless,” and the Netflix miniseries “The Witcher: Blood Origin.”

Andras Hamori, the Hungarian film and television producer whose credits included Atom Egoyan’s The Sweet Hereafter, István Szabó’s Sunshine and David Cronenberg’s eXistenZ, has died. He was 71.

Hamori died Sept. 2 in Budapest after a long illness that prevented him from working in recent years, his friend Mia Taylor announced.

Hamori, who worked out of Toronto early in his career and was a partner in Alliance Entertainment, also guided the cult horror classic The Gate (1987), starring Stephen Dorff in his first major role; Stephen Frears’ Chéri (2009), starring Michelle Pfeiffer; and the 2014 History Channel miniseries Houdini, starring Adrien Brody.

The Sweet Hereafter (1997), which earned Egoyan Oscar nominations for best director and adapted screenplay, revolved around a school bus accident in a Canadian town that killed 14 children.

Hungarian film and television producer Andras Hamori, who produced films like “Crash” and “Sunshine” and shows such as “The Gate,” died Sept. 2. He was 71.

Some of Hamori’s other credits through the late ’90s and early 2000s include films like “The Sweet Hereafter,” “eXistenZ,” “Max,” “Owning Mahowny” and “Formula 51.” From 1991-1993 he served as producer for all 66 episodes of “Tropical Heat” and in 2014 he produced the History Channel miniseries “Houdini” starring Adrien Brody.

Starting as a film critic and short filmmaker in 1970s Budapest, Hamori was first encouraged to move to North America and chase his film-producing dreams by Hungarian-Canadian theater director John Hirsch. In 1981, armed with a print of one of his shorts, Hamori moved to Toronto, temporarily shacking up in Hirsch’s basement.

The Berlin International Film Festival has added special screenings to commemorate the deaths of actors Philip Seymour Hoffman and Maximilian Schell. The festival will present a special screening of "Capote" at the CinemaxX 6 on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at 9.00 pm. "Capote" had screened in competition at the festival in 2006. Hoffman also made his way to the festival for Richard Kwietniowski’s "Owning Mahowny," Spike Lee’s "25th Hour," Anthony Minghella’s "The Talented Mr. Ripley" and Paul Thomas Anderson’s "Magnolia," which won the Golden Bear. In honor of Maximilian Schell, the festival will present his film "Meine Schwester Maria" (My Sister Maria). This screening will be showing at the Urania Filmbühne Berlin on February 9, 2014 at 3.00 pm. In the film, Schell reflects on his relationship with his sister. Schell's documentary "Marlene," about Marlene Dietrich, was screened in the Competition in 1984. He returned to the Competition as an actor in Jeroen Krabbé’s.

The Oscar-winning actor was found at his home at 35 Bethune Street in Manhattan's West Village earlier today (February 2), New York City Police said.

We don't mention it a lot around here, but Syfy's supernatural series "Lost Girl" is the number one original cable drama among Adults 18-49 and 25-54 in its time period (Monday, 10Pm) so it obviously has a lot of fans. Which must be why the network announced its renewal for a fourth season.

It’s true; no matter what certain networks may claim about their “winter finales,” winter doesn’t actually start until December 21, and isn’t over until March 20. Syfy, at least, understands this, and has announced their appropriately-titled winter schedule accordingly.

Happily this means that, starting on Monday, January 14, 2013, we will have some great television to get us through the cold months, including the return of Being Human and Lost Girl, and the premiere of Continuum, and later in the week, the return of Ghost Hunters and Face Off.

Canadian TV series "Lost Girl", which also airs on Syfy here in the States, has lined up a pretty impressive guest star for its upcoming Season 3: none other than ass-kicker supreme Linda Hamilton.

TVLine reports that Hamilton (The Terminator, "Beauty and the Beast") will guest star in Season 3's tenth episode as Acacia, “a tough, sexy, and ruthless assassin who has enjoyed a storied and deadly career.”

Season 2 of "Lost Girl" is currently finishing out its run on Syfy by moving to Friday nights at 10:00 Pm, and Season 3 will air on both Syfy and Showcase in 2013 (Syfy says January while Showcase just says winter).

Synopsis:

Anna Silk (Being Erica) stars as seductress Bo, a Succubus (a powerful female entity in folklore) who feeds off sexual energy. Raised by human parents, Bo had no reason to believe she was anything other than the girl next door – until she “drained” her first boyfriend to death.

Of course, for the most part I only know of Lost Girl from its U.S. airing, but I’m a fan, and Linda Hamilton showing up is just too cool.

She’ll be guest-starring as an assassin no less, and it ought to be a rather fun trip. Call me crazy, but this show just gets better and better, and I love to see things coming south.

Excellent news about a fun, entertaining supernatural crime show with some cool creatures, a fair amount of sex and terrific chemistry between the characters. Hopefully you’ve been catching Lost Girl on Syfy, Mondays at 10/9c. The show is Syfy‘s only “acquired” scripted series. It’s a Canadian production and has been broadcast there with great success and rabid fans, if my international Twitter feed is any indication.

It was renewed for a third season in Canada back in December, before Season 1 debuted here on Syfy in January. Syfy began airing Season 2 the week after Season 1 concluded, and Season 2 is still rolling out now. It’s great news that we’ll be seeing the third season here as well. Here’s the press release:

Well, there’s a much bigger audience for this news than there was when I mentioned that the second of Lost Girl was coming, so hopefully there are a lot of you out there that are glad to hear that Season 3 is getting underway.

It’s timely news as well, now that Syfy kicked off Eureka! last night, which hopefully gave Lost Girl even more of a boost. It’s also timely, because I know there are some folks out there who started to wonder when Syfy began talking about Season 2 of a rebroadcast show that didn’t actually have a Season 3 yet.

I love Syfy for airing the show, but it’s tricky for some fans who may find themselves unsure how much they want to invest in a show, when the network you’re watching it on isn’t really in control of what happens.

This may be old news to some, but the classic Terrytoons character Mighty Mouse is apparently poised to make a triumphant return sometime in the next couple of years, with Paramount currently developing a "reboot" of the animated series for the big screen. The L.A. Times [1] reports that a Mighty Mouse movie has been in utero for years, with Brian and Mark Gunn (cousins of James Gunn) having written a script for Nickelodeon at one point in time, as well as Maurice Chauvet (Owning Mahowny) and Chris Vail. Paramount is now actively looking for a new writer and director for the project, and hoping to move forward with it in the near future. The property seems like it could be a gold mine, considering the popularity of both superhero flicks and family-oriented live-action / CG hybrid comedies. BERLIN -- Australia's Beyond Films snapped up a brace of titles during the weekend, taking on sales duties to No One Gets Off in This Town, from director Richard Kwietniowski (Owning Mahowny), and Gillies MacKinnon's Flesh and Blood. Gets Off has lined up a cast including Brenda Blethyn, Jane Horrocks, John Hurt, Amira Casar and Rupert Evans, Beyond said. It will be produced by Jason Newmark, through U.K. production banner Dan Films. MacKinnon will direct Gary Lewis in the lead role of Flesh and Blood, which will be executive produced by Sally Hibbin and produced by Jane Robertson. Beyond also announced that Marc Evans has been tapped to direct its South African war story The Dead Wait, which headlines Colin Firth and is being produced by Sheryl Crown.
