Image
Updated: The upcoming Fox event series “The Faithful” has found its first three cast members.

Minnie Driver, Jeffrey Donovan, and Natacha Karam are all attached to star in the first part of the three-part series. Driver will play Sarah, Donovan will play Abraham, and Karam will play Hagar. The official description for first installment states:

“Sarah feels incomplete without the child that has been promised to her and her husband, Abraham, by God. After braving isolation, famine, the ire of Pharaoh, and several more years of barrenness, she resorts to her own plan to bring a child into the world involving her maidservant Hagar (Karam) and Abraham. However, jealousy soon sets in after Hagar gives birth to Ishmael (from whose lineage the Islamic religion traces its roots). Then a miracle happens… And personal freedoms are at odds with long-held grievances and shattered love.”

The role brings Karam back to Fox,...

Andras Hamori, Producer of ‘The Sweet Hereafter’ and ‘eXistenZ,’ Dies at 71
Image
Andras Hamori, the Hungarian film and television producer whose credits included Atom Egoyan’s The Sweet Hereafter, István Szabó’s Sunshine and David Cronenberg’s eXistenZ, has died. He was 71.

Hamori died Sept. 2 in Budapest after a long illness that prevented him from working in recent years, his friend Mia Taylor announced.

Hamori, who worked out of Toronto early in his career and was a partner in Alliance Entertainment, also guided the cult horror classic The Gate (1987), starring Stephen Dorff in his first major role; Stephen Frears’ Chéri (2009), starring Michelle Pfeiffer; and the 2014 History Channel miniseries Houdini, starring Adrien Brody.

The Sweet Hereafter (1997), which earned Egoyan Oscar nominations for best director and adapted screenplay, revolved around a school bus accident in a Canadian town that killed 14 children.

Sunshine (1999) told the story of several generations of a Jewish family set against the backdrop of Hungarian history. It starred Ralph Fiennes, was...

Andras Hamori, Producer of ‘Crash,’ Dies at 71
Image
Hungarian film and television producer Andras Hamori, who produced films like “Crash” and “Sunshine” and shows such as “The Gate,” died Sept. 2. He was 71.

Some of Hamori’s other credits through the late ’90s and early 2000s include films like “The Sweet Hereafter,” “eXistenZ,” “Max,” “Owning Mahowny” and “Formula 51.” From 1991-1993 he served as producer for all 66 episodes of “Tropical Heat” and in 2014 he produced the History Channel miniseries “Houdini” starring Adrien Brody.

Starting as a film critic and short filmmaker in 1970s Budapest, Hamori was first encouraged to move to North America and chase his film-producing dreams by Hungarian-Canadian theater director John Hirsch. In 1981, armed with a print of one of his shorts, Hamori moved to Toronto, temporarily shacking up in Hirsch’s basement.

Hamori got his break working with fellow Hungarian native Robert Lantos before becoming a partner at Alliance Entertainment, a leading Canadian film and television...

Philip Seymour Hoffman Led This Heartbreaking Gambling Drama Based on a True Story
Image
There were few celebrity deaths within the last decade that came quite as much of a shock as the passing of the great Philip Seymour Hoffman in early 2014. Hoffman wasnt just one of the most versatile and acclaimed actors of his generation, but a deeply generous performer who clearly had so many more great performances to give the world. While its tragic that Hoffman isnt still working on new projects today, it's worth looking into the depths of his filmography to shed a spotlight on some of his underrated gems. While many cinephiles may associate him with iconic performances in The Talented Mr. Ripley or Almost Famous, Hoffman starred in many underrated independent dramas, including the 2003 biopic Owning Mahowny.

Keith Knight's 10 Best Movie & TV Roles, Ranked By Rotten Tomatoes
Cynthia Dale, Lori Hallier, Alf Humphreys, and Keith Knight in Meurtres à la St-Valentin (1981)
A Canadian by birth, film and TV actor, Keith Knight, is best known for his roles in movies like Meatballs and Owning Mahowny. However, it is his roles on stage and that as a voice actor on children’s TV series such as The Busy World Of Richard Scarry and The Care Bears Adventures in Wonderland that won him worldwide recognition. Known for his wry comedic sense on screen and hugely versatile voice, it is an unfortunate truth that few people know about him, or even his most notable works in movies and TV.

Related: Every Simon Pegg & Nick Frost Collaboration (Ranked According To Rotten Tomatoes)

While Rotten Tomatoes is usually an extremely reliable website on which to find critics and audience reviews for most movies and TV shows, shows that Keith Knight has worked on are sparsely rated or do not have enough reviews to merit a "Tomatometer" score.

Top 4 Casino Movies That Actually Focus on Gambling
The legalisation of gambling in Nevada in 1931 established Las Vegas as the world’s gambling mecca. But it did more than that – it glamorised the gambling industry. Rumours regarding the flourishing gambling business in Las Vegas and its exuberance reached Hollywood, and before long the public could enjoy gambling movies in theatres all over the country. More than 80 years later, Marvel’s Blade Movie will show that casinos have a special place in the hearts of Hollywood film directors.

Actually The Matrix Slot is based on one of the most popular movies, but not all gambling movies are the same, though. In fact, most of them focus not on casino gaming itself, but rather on its glamour and magnificence – which is great, but we believe there is something even greater.

To us, watching the action is much more entertaining than watching the glamour. That is why we have prepared four...

StreamFix: 5 Philip Seymour Hoffman Titles to Watch Right Now
Philip Seymour Hoffman at an event for Les marches du pouvoir (2011)
Philip Seymour Hoffman, a man once described as "the best of us" by fellow actor William H. Macy (see below), died a year ago today. If ever an actor warranted a full-oeuvre review, it is Psh. Celebrate his tremendous cinematic legacy with these five titles on Netflix right now. "Punch Drunk Love"  Remember when Adam Sandler starred in one of the most touching movies you've ever seen? I know, your brain has since tried to erase that moment out of sheer incomprehensibility. With the exception of "Boogie Nights" (in which Psh is also incredible), "Punch Drunk Love" might be the most universally beloved Paul Thomas Anderson movie.  "Almost Famous" Lester Bangs remains the definitive rock critic of the '70s, and Psh's portrayal of the grizzled journo is just one facet of what makes "Almost Famous" enchanting. Frances McDormand, Kate Hudson, and even a wee Zooey Deschanel play fascinating characters...

Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Turning Point
I’m still in shock about the sudden and untimely death of Philip Seymour Hoffman. It’s not just that we’ve lost one of the best actors of our time, or the realization that he leaves behind a partner and three young children. It’s that a man with such a great gift got caught in the grip of addiction and let it overtake his life. (Ironically, one of my favorite performances of his is in the 2003 film Owning Mahowny, about a man who is addicted—to gambling. I never dreamt that he might have had a personal connection to the character.) I’ve been reading the transcript of an interview I did with Hoffman at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in 2006, right after he was...

Philip Seymour Hoffman: stars pay tribute at Critics' Circle awards
Steve Coogan and Naomie Harris lead eulogies to late star at London Critics' Circle awards, while Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro and George Clooney also release statements

• Twitter tributes to Philip Seymour Hoffman

The British film industry paid tribute to Philip Seymour Hoffman at the London Critics' Circle awards last night, with Steve Coogan and Naomie Harris among the stars lining up to celebrate the work of the late Oscar winner.

Coogan said Hoffman raised the quality of every film he was cast in. "There are actors and there are movie stars and sometimes they're both but he was an actor first and a movie star second," he said. "He did some tremendous work. People have different opinions about actors but you wouldn't find anybody who would have a bad word to say about any of his performances – they were all incredibly nuanced."

Skyfall's Naomie Harris told the ceremony...

Philip Seymour Hoffman at an event for Les marches du pouvoir (2011)
Philip Seymour Hoffman was a bravura actor who made his pain a timeless expression of us all
Philip Seymour Hoffman at an event for Les marches du pouvoir (2011)
I’ll never forget the moment I first sat up and took notice of Philip Seymour Hoffman — the moment that I knew I loved him as an actor and knew, as well, that he was a different kind of great actor from anyone I’d ever seen. It was the moment in Boogie Nights (1997) when Hoffman’s Scotty J., the boom-mike operator who has spent most of the film hanging around the sidelines of the porn set, a sweetly insecure dude in long red hair, his gut poking out of his ’70s tank tops, confesses to Dirk Diggler that he...

Film News: Oscar Winner Philip Seymour Hoffman Dies at 46
New York City – Philip Seymour Hoffman, Best Actor Oscar Winner for ‘Capote,’ was found dead in his New York City apartment early Sunday morning. The 46-year-old Hoffman had struggled with heroin addiction, and police suspect an overdose, but the cause of his death is yet to be determined.

Philip Seymour Hoffman in His Oscar Winning Role as ‘Capote’

Photo credit: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

Philip Seymour Hoffman was a consummate actor and performer, from the cult huckster Lancaster Dodd (“The Master”) to manic sound man Scotty J. (“Boogie Nights), through his Oscar winning portrayal of Truman Capote (“Capote”), Hoffman embraced his roles with a intuitive understanding that was second-to-none among his peers. He was almost unrecognizable as Oakland Athletics Manager Art Howe in “Moneyball,” but every scene he was in, the focus seemed all about him. He recently did a more mainstream role as Plutarch Heavensbee in “The Hunger Games...

Philip Seymour Hoffman (1967-2014)
Very sad news has been confirmed today as the tremendously talented actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead at the much too young age of 46. No cause of death is currently known, but Hoffman has struggled with substance abuse in the past and an overdose is suspected here. Few in the business had a more diverse filmography than him, so as tragic a loss as it always is whenever an entertainer is taken from us, this one just seems all the more depressing and hard to process due what he still had left to share with the world. A Best Actor Oscar winner for his lead performance in the biopic Capote, Hoffman was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his scene stealing turns in Charlie Wilson’s War, Doubt, and last year for The Master as well. Along with multiple BAFTA, Golden Globe, Independent Spirit, and Screen Actors Guild citations,...

Syfy Picks Up Season 4 of Lost Girl
Hopefully you’ve been watching this really fun, entertaining supernatural show. If not, now’s the time to get going on that. Lost Girl brings us new supernatural creatures nearly every week as well as longer story arcs, some nice fight scenes, great cast chemistry, and lots of sex between pretty people. What’s not to like?

The series is produced in Canada and airs on Showcase there; Showcase and Syfy both announced the new season pickup yesterday. Unfortunately, while Canada is getting the next season in late 2013, we in the U.S. have to wait until 2014. Hopefully that isn’t set in stone…

Currently halfway through its third season on Showcase, Lost Girl is centered on sexy succubus Bo (Anna Silk). Grab Your Calendars: Syfy Announces Winter Schedule
It’s true; no matter what certain networks may claim about their “winter finales,” winter doesn’t actually start until December 21, and isn’t over until March 20. Syfy, at least, understands this, and has announced their appropriately-titled winter schedule accordingly.

Happily this means that, starting on Monday, January 14, 2013, we will have some great television to get us through the cold months, including the return of Being Human and Lost Girl, and the premiere of Continuum, and later in the week, the return of Ghost Hunters and Face Off.

Here’s the schedule of premieres, along with series synopses:

Lost Girl Finds a Season 3 Guest Star in Linda Hamilton
Canadian TV series "Lost Girl", which also airs on Syfy here in the States, has lined up a pretty impressive guest star for its upcoming Season 3: none other than ass-kicker supreme Linda Hamilton.

TVLine reports that Hamilton (The Terminator, "Beauty and the Beast") will guest star in Season 3's tenth episode as Acacia, “a tough, sexy, and ruthless assassin who has enjoyed a storied and deadly career.”

Season 2 of "Lost Girl" is currently finishing out its run on Syfy by moving to Friday nights at 10:00 Pm, and Season 3 will air on both Syfy and Showcase in 2013 (Syfy says January while Showcase just says winter).

Synopsis:

Anna Silk (Being Erica) stars as seductress Bo, a Succubus (a powerful female entity in folklore) who feeds off sexual energy. Raised by human parents, Bo had no reason to believe she was anything other than the girl next door – until she “drained” her first boyfriend to death.

Lost Girl Snags Linda Hamilton For Guest Role As An Assassin
Of course, for the most part I only know of Lost Girl from its U.S. airing, but I’m a fan, and Linda Hamilton showing up is just too cool.

Excellent news about a fun, entertaining supernatural crime show with some cool creatures, a fair amount of sex and terrific chemistry between the characters. Hopefully you’ve been catching Lost Girl on Syfy, Mondays at 10/9c. The show is Syfy‘s only “acquired” scripted series. I love Syfy for airing the show, but it’s tricky for some fans who may find themselves unsure how much they want to invest in a show, when the network you’re watching it on isn’t really in control of what happens.

Maury Chaykin obituary
Actor who was at his best in shadowy roles

In Canada, Chaykin was something of a national treasure. He won a Genie award for best actor for his performance as a Brian Wilson-like burned-out rock star in Whale Music (1994), gave remarkable performances in three films directed by Atom Egoyan...

Mighty Mouse Movie in Development
This may be old news to some, but the classic Terrytoons character Mighty Mouse is apparently poised to make a triumphant return sometime in the next couple of years, with Paramount currently developing a "reboot" of the animated series for the big screen. The L.A. Times [1] reports that a Mighty Mouse movie has been in utero for years, with Brian and Mark Gunn (cousins of James Gunn) having written a script for Nickelodeon at one point in time, as well as Maurice Chauvet (Owning Mahowny) and Chris Vail. Paramount is now actively looking for a new writer and director for the project, and hoping to move forward with it in the near future.
