25th Anniversary: "The Crucible"
Image
by Nick Taylor

Happy belated Thanksgiving, Tfe readers! In the spirit of American History, here’s a nice slice of cinema on one of the US’s many exemplary passages of telling on itself: the Salem Witch Trials. Arthur Miller’s retelling of these events in The Crucible is so universally well known, but how much the 1996 film adaptation is part of that legacy? I first saw the film in my junior high English class (I’d already chewed through Miller’s play and Death of a Salesman before I was ever assigned them), and aside from a few indelible images of Joan Allen’s silent devastation at court or Daniel Day-Lewis’s artfully grimy self in prison, Nicholas Hytner’s rendition of The Crucible didn’t leave much of an impression. Where Shine presented an opportunity to check off a box I knew I wouldn’t check off without outside incentive,...

‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’: An Epic Spellbinding Guide to All the Horror References, Episode by Episode
Kiernan Shipka in Les Nouvelles Aventures de Sabrina (2018)
[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from Season 1 of “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.”]

A love of horror runs in series creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s blood, and it comes out in “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” his dark take on the classic Archie Comics title “Sabrina the Teenage Witch.” In adapting his comic book for Netflix, he discussed some of those horror influences with Lee Toland Krieger, who would be setting the tone of the series by directing the first two episodes.

“He arranged a screening of clips from some of our favorite movies,” Aguirre-Sacasa said. “The three great witch movies are ‘Rosemary’s Baby,’ Dario Argento’s ‘Suspiria,’ and Robert Eggers’ movie ‘The Witch,’ that came out a few years ago. And then even more recently, Ti West’s movie, ‘House of the Devil,’ and Oz Perkins’ ‘The Blackcoat’s Daughter,’ starring Kiernan [Shipka] actually. In terms of devil movies, we talked about ‘The Omen,’ we talked about ‘The Exorcist,’ the...

The Purge Episode 4 Review: Release The Beast
Ron Hogan Sep 26, 2018

The Purge handles sexual violence in a surprisingly smart manner.

This The Purge review contains spoilers.

The Purge Episode 4

One of the smartest things that The Purge has done is avoid the specter of sexual violence on Purge night. It's people out for blood, not people out to rape or maim. The Purge isn't necessarily a classy film series, but that's a nice touch to keep it out of the muck of exploitation movies and into something a little more palatable for modern sensibilities. Rape as a movie trope was much more prevalent, and acceptable, in the grimy grindhouses of the '70s, not the clean multiplexes of the 2010s.

The Purge television show, four episodes in, decides to not ignore that. Instead, they lean into it, creating an all-female defense squad who rides around in an Rv on Purge night to protect women from would-be rapists and murderers.

Odessa Young, Suki Waterhouse, Hari Nef, and Abra in Assassination Nation (2018)
‘Assassination Nation’ Ads Rejected by Facebook, YouTube
Odessa Young, Suki Waterhouse, Hari Nef, and Abra in Assassination Nation (2018)
“Assassination Nation,” a wicked riff on the Salem Witch Trials and our current social media culture, was always intended to be provocative. What Neon, the indie label that bought the film at Sundance, didn’t count on was that many of those same digital giants it skewers would find advertisements for “Assassination Nation” too hot to handle.

As the movie prepares for its debut on Friday, it is having trouble posting clips on Facebook and YouTube. And it’s not just new media. Billboards, one of the oldest forms of hawking products around, are also proving tough to come by.

To be fair, there’s good reason for the discomfort. Neon has definitely been leaning into the film’s more controversial elements. “Assassination Nation” follows four gun-toting high school girls who take up arms against an anonymous hacker who has leaked all of their hometown’s dirty secrets online. Their revenge is bloody.

Meghan Markle’s Sister Trashes Media, Compares Coverage to ‘Salem Witch Trials’
Meghan Markle
Samantha Markle, the half-sister of Meghan Markle, gave a scathing assessment of the media treatment she faced in the days leading up to her sister’s marriage to Prince Harry.

“In my interviews, I’ve said so many positive things, but they never printed those … They go so far now as to rise to levels of slander and defamation and I feel that they’ve taken this too far, because they know that the lawsuits won’t hurt them financially as much as the lack of sales will,” Markle told reporter Charlie Nash.

Timeless Recap: Son of a Witch — Plus, Was Jessica Happy to See Wyatt?
This week on NBC’s Timeless, Wyatt’s reunion with his dead wife did not go as he imagined, while Lucy and Rufus begrudgingly teamed with Flynn to keep Rittenhouse from conjuring trouble in colonial Salem.

Picking up exactly where last episode left off, Wyatt apparently got a text from Jessica, who is no longer dead but very alive (and busy, pulling doubles at a watering hole). And despite Wyatt’s warm embrace, he only gets a big chill in return — seeing as he apparently has been Awol for two months (and checked out of their marriage for far longer).

In the past few months, a slew of powerful men — from Harvey Weinstein to Matt Lauer — have been outed as sexual predators. Though many may be shocked, the ladies of Saturday Night Live are here to tell you that this kind of bad behavior is nothing new.

Set in a Candy Land-like setting, host Saoirse Ronan and castmembers Aidy Bryant, Cecily Strong and Kate McKinnon posed as pop princesses to say “Welcome to Hell.”

“Hey there, boys. We know the last couple months have been frickin’ insane,” said Strong before Bryant chimed in, “All these big, cool, powerful guys are...

‘Saturday Night Live’ Sexual Harassment Song ‘Welcome to Hell’ Shows Women’s Daily Nightmare — Watch
Saturday Night Live (1975)
The Dec. 2 episode of “Saturday Night Live” featured the season’s most pointed statement against Hollywood’s ongoing sexual harassment scandals in the form of a candy-colored music video for the song “Welcome to Hell.” In it, host Saoirse Ronan and cast members Aidy Bryant, Cecily Strong, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones educate men who have been shocked about this recent run of news about how life has been difficult for women for hundreds of years.

“Well, House of Cards is ruined, and that really sucks, but here’s a list of stuff that’s ruined for us,” the group sings at one point, before listing things like walking, ponytails, drinking, and hotels. The women also reveal how they arm themselves to walk home at night, and how mistreatment in the workplace can be traced back to a long history of men asserting power over women, such as the Salem witch trials...

Woody Allen Only ‘Feels Sad’ For Harvey Weinstein Because He’s a ‘Sad, Sick Man’
Harvey Weinstein and Ryan Kavanaugh
Woody Allen broke his silence on the Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment scandal over the weekend, telling the BBC, “The whole Harvey Weinstein thing is very sad for everybody involved.” His comments received backlash for seemingly defending Weinstein, or at least for sympathizing with him (“It’s sad for Harvey that his life is so messed up,” Allen said), but the “Wonder Wheel” director has clarified his remarks in a new statement made exclusively to Variety.

“When I said I felt sad for Harvey Weinstein I thought it was clear the meaning was because he is a sad, sick man,” Allen’s statement reads. “I was surprised it was treated differently. Lest there be any ambiguity, this statement clarifies my intention and feelings.”

Another part of Allen’s original statement that received criticism was his comparison of the...

The Unfair and Ridiculous Reasons Black Cats Are Considered Unlucky
Thursday is Black Cat Appreciation Day, which is aimed at correcting the centuries-long string of bad publicity that black cats have had to endure, as well as celebrating them for the fantastic felines they truly are.

Here’s the thing, though: No one’s exactly sure why the poor dears are considered unlucky in so much of Western culture. Some countries — Japan and parts of the U.K. — consider the black cat lucky. In Celtic mythology, there’s a fairy creature called the cat sìth that may be the root of the black cat’s connection with witchcraft: The people...

"The Crucible" Is Just About Witches
The Tony Awards are this Sunday, so all week we’ve been talking stage-to-film adaptations. Here’s Goody Jorge with the mother of all allegorical plays…

At this point everyone knows that The Crucible is not about the Salem Witch trials.

Arthur Miller’s 1953 play is a very straightforward and less-than-obvious allegory for the McCarthy era and the prosecution of believed Communists in the U.S. It has become a staple of American theater and inspired dozens of generations to think twice before finger-pointing.

Underneath even its Red Scare themes, the play is about much more...

Listen to Vincent Price's Insane 1969 Album Witchcraft-magic: An Adventure In Demonology
Vincent Price is one of my favorite actors of all time. I absolutely love all the horror films that he made throughout the course of his career. Until now, I never knew that he made an album called Witchcraft-Magic: An Adventure in Demonology, and it's awesome and creepy!

Price narrates the record, and it offers details on how to cast spells, summon demons, how to protect yourself when they arrive, and even sell your soul to Satan. Just so you know, this album is dead serious!

The first disc features Price detailing rumors about the occult practices of Hitler and the Nazis, giving a brief history of witchcraft in Europe, then describing some of the gruesome tortures that befell accused witches during the Salem Witch Trials.

Then there's disc two, which is where things get crazy:

The second disc begins with Price issuing listeners a challenge, asking: “Do you have...

Tribeca 2017: Five Questions with Blame Director Quinn Shephard
Most of the conversation surrounding Blame, a new film by writer-director-producer-editor-star Quinn Shephard, focuses on her age. At 22, she seems exceptionally young to be undertaking so many roles on a debut feature, but the results attest to her talent and drive. It should be said upfront that Blame is a poignant and incisive examination of modern American adolescence, as filtered through the lens of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible and the Salem witch trials of 1692, which form the inspiration for this modern-day narrative. The film delves deepest into high school mean-girl culture — with excellent performances by Sarah Mezzanotte and Nadia Alexander, who […]...

Natasha Richardson in La servante écarlate (1990)
How 'The Handmaid's Tale' Became TV's Most Chilling Trump-Era Series
Natasha Richardson in La servante écarlate (1990)
"Girls, I know this must feel very strange," the woman in the black robe says. She is older, stern, severe, authoritarian; she's addressing a group women seated in a circle, all of whom have been stripped of their reproductive rights, forcibly separated from their families and remanded to sexual slavery. "But ordinary is just what you're used to," she continues. "This might not seem ordinary to you right now. But, after a time, it will. This will become ordinary."

The promise of a "new normal," spoken by an apparatchik of a totalitarian theocracy – it's chilling,...

How a 20-Year-Old Filmmaker Wrote, Directed and Starred In Her Feature Directorial Debut — Tribeca 2017
Quinn Shephard
Filmmaker Quinn Shephard didn’t go to film school — instead, she made her own. The New Jersey native was just 15 when she came up with the idea for what would become her feature directorial debut “Blame,” a modern high school-set take on Arthur Miller’s classic play “The Crucible.” Seven years later, Shephard is at the Tribeca Film Festival with the film, one that she not only stars in, but also wrote, directed, edited and produced. At 21, she’s reached a benchmark that usually filmmakers a few more years of work.

The film follows Shephard as high school outcast Abigail Grey, who returns to high school after a mysterious incident the year before, only to form a taboo bond with her new drama teacher (Chris Messina). As their relationship blossoms in very unexpected ways, Abigail’s nemesis Melissa (Nadia Alexander) observes from afar, continually threatening to bust the entire situation wide open (a witch hunt?...

Margaret Atwood
Margaret Atwood Doesn’t Hear Complaints That The Handmaid’s Tale Is Unrealistic Anymore
Margaret Atwood
This story originally appeared in Time.

When Margaret Atwood first published The Handmaid’s Tale in 1985, some readers and book critics questioned her premise: An American government that rolls back women’s rights? Women protesting in the streets? People fleeing to Canada? Impossible.

“When I first published that book, at the outset some people were saying, ‘Oh, Margaret, how could you suggest that we would ever do such a thing,” Atwood, who is a member of the 2017 Time 100, says. “I don’t hear that so much anymore.”

Atwood challenged herself to only include events in the book that had happened...

The Witch (2015)
Robert Eggers Wins Independent Spirit Best First Screenplay Award For ‘The Witch’
The Witch (2015)
Robert Eggers took home the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay Saturday. The writer and director of “The Witch,” Eggers’ debut feature is a beautifully shot horror about a Puritan family’s brush with witches told entirely in old English. Set in New England decades before the Salem witch trials of 1692, “The Witch” was lauded for its daring and inventive new take on the classic genre.

Originally a designer for experimental and classical theater in New York City, Eggers transitioned to film as a designer and by directing shorts. In his acceptance speech, Eggers said: “I want to thank my wife, who had to be around for four years while I was obsessed with witches… Also thanks to the Puritans, who wrote a lot of stuff down. Otherwise I couldn’t have written this.”

During the run-up to “Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them,” J.K. Rowling released a series of Pottermore articles explaining the history of magic in North America. When Rowling wasn’t taking heat for appropriating Native American culture and the real life tragedy of the Salem Witch Trials into her world of wizardry, she was raising the eyebrows of many Harry Potter fans with this little bit of information: There’s a Hogwarts-like school of magic in the United States called Ilvermorny. Now, a deleted scene from “Fantastic Beasts” that has been posted on Facebook sheds a little bit more light on this.

Zach Braff Related to Mitt Romney Through a Witch (Video)
[[tmz:video id="0_9uqnsn9k"]] Zach Braff and Mitt Romney have a weird connection that involves witchcraft ... in the late 1600s. This is gonna sound bizarre, but we got Zach heading out of Catch in L.A. Monday night (not the bizarre part), and he confirmed he and the former Mass. Gov found out they're both descendants of the same real-life witch from the Salem Witch Trials.  Her name was Rebecca Nurse, and she was hanged in 1692. There was reportedly no evidence against her,...
