The 1980 Chevy Chase comedy Oh! Heavenly Dog is getting the remake treatment at Fox 2000, with the studio hiring Tim Hill (Hop) to direct. The filmmaker will also co-write the script with Dave Johnson. Temple Hill, the production company behind the young adult franchise The Maze Runner, are producing. The original movie was set up as a starring vehicle for Chevy Chase and his canine co-star Benji, who were equally popular back when the film was made, with the comedy existing solely on the box office draw of its marquee names.

The story centered on a private investigator (Chevy Chase) who is stabbed to death after discovering a dead body. It is decided that he won't go to Heaven or Hell, but instead is sent back to Earth as a dog, tasked with solving his own murder. Despite solid starts from Diary of a Wimpy Kid and The Bounty Hunter, Alice in Wonderland held on to the top spot for the third weekend in a row, down 45 percent to an estimated $34.5 million. Overall, weekend business was up 20 percent from the same timeframe last year, when Knowing opened to $24.6 million.

Alice in Wonderland's $34.5 million weekend represents the sixth highest-grossing third weekend ever, and its total now sits at $265.8 million in 17 days. On Saturday, Alice surpassed Batman to become director Tim Burton's highest grossing movie ever, though Batman and several others still rank higher in terms of estimated attendance. Alice also topped 300 last Monday to become the highest-grossing March release ever.

Despite a lack of distinctive marketing, Diary of a Wimpy Kid drew a decent crowd, opening to an estimated $21.8 million on approximately 3,400 screens at 3,077 sites. It was the biggest start ever for a non-animated, non-fantasy children's book adaptation.

Tim Hill is in discussions with the 20th Century Fox's Fox 2000 division about directing Alvin and the Chipmunks, a live-action/CG film based on the animated trio of singing chipmunks, who first rose to popularity in the late 1950s.

Hill directed last year's Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties, which Fox released, as well as 2001's Max Keeble's Big Move. His writing credits include The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie as well as episodes of the SpongeBob TV series.

Fox is expected to cast a comic actor in the role of Dave Seville, pal to the three chipmunks, Alvin, Simon and Theodore, who will be computer generated.

Ross Bagdasarian Jr., son of the late Ross Bagdasarian Sr., who created the Chipmunks, is producing along with Janice Karman, president of Bagdasarian Prods., which is producing the project with Fox.
