Goodbye to David Johansen, the last jet boy standing from the New York Dolls. It wasn’t just his madman energy that helped invent punk rock — it was his warmth and soul. He got a loving send-off in the final weeks of his life, after his daughter Leah Hennessy announced that he was dying of cancer. The news inspired a worldwide outpouring of grief and gratitude. This man was a lifelong personality crisis, preaching his rock & roll gospel that posing and strutting and peacocking through life is not merely fun,...

When Morrissey attempted to reunite the New York Dolls in 2004 for a performance at London’s Meltdown festival, he thought his odds of success were low. “I expected David [Johansen] to laugh at me and put the phone down,” he said that year. “But he was very agreeable and it seemed like now was the right time. He said, ‘Yes, they are great songs.’ I said, ‘Yes, and that’s the reason why you should sing them. That’s the reason why people still want to hear them.’”

The family of David Johansen, the legendary singer for the New York Dolls and a charismatic screen presence, has launched a fundraiser as he faces both stage 4 cancer and a brain tumor.
In a statement, the 75-year-old David Johansen said, “We’ve been living with my illness for a long time, still having fun, seeing friends and family, carrying on, but this tumble the day after Thanksgiving really brought us to a whole new level of debilitation. This is the worst pain I’ve ever experienced in my entire life. I’ve never been one to ask for help, but this is an emergency. Thank you.”
Funds have been set up on Sweet Relief, which is designed to provide financial help to musicians in need. As for David Johansen’s specific needs, the official fundraiser site notes that he currently requires around-the-clock nursing, physical therapy and more. Those seeking to...

Thirty-three films comprise the eclectic lineup for the 56th Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival, the programming team led by the artistic director Karel Och revealed Tuesday. The selection includes 27 world premieres, three international premieres, and three European premieres, covering five continents.
In addition to the Crystal Globe Competition and Special Screenings section, Kviff’s new competition, Proxima, will make its debut in this year’s edition. Proxima aims to be “an inclusive space for pictures by young filmmakers and renowned auteurs alike, presenting bold works that defy categorization,” the festival said. In contrast to the East of the West competition, which it replaces, Proxima has no geographical restrictions.
Thirteen titles in the official selection are directed by filmmakers who have competed in Kviff before. Nine films are debut features. Melodramas, dystopian sci-fis, romantic comedies and essay documentaries are part of the wide-ranging lineup.

In case you didn't know, there's a One Direction edition of the popular Heardle game, and it's the perfect way for Directioners to test their knowledge! If you haven't played Heardle yet, it's pretty simple: you're given the first few seconds of a song, and you have to try to guess the track in the shortest amount of time possible. You get one second to start and can continue adding seconds to the clip until you get it.
If you know the beginnings of songs, this should be easy! That's why we put together a cheat sheet of the opening lyrics to all of One Direction's songs. However, bear in mind that not every song's opening will have lyrics, so you really have to know those intro notes.
The list below contains all of the songs from One Direction's discography - from "Up All Night" to "Made in the A.

Paul McCartney’s handwritten lyrics to “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” are headed to the auction block via Moments in Time. The asking price is 425,000.
The song was pretty close to its final form when McCartney wrote these lyrics down on Apple Corps stationary, but he did cross out a few words in the second verse and make tiny corrections.
“Maxwell’s Silver Hammer,” which centers around a deranged murderer named Maxwell Edison who kills his victims with a hammer, was penned in late 1968 during the writing sessions for The White Album.

It’s an Oscar moment that makes the Moonlight/La La Land fiasco look quaint by comparison. What is an unintentional envelope mix-up next to an intentional slap heard around the world? Twelve hours later, no can stop talking about last night’s Oscars… and that surreal moment when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock across the face because of a joke that was in questionable taste.
The morning after, there are countless reports among entertainment outlets and hard-nosed news organizations alike: Rock is not pressing charges; Smith may be asked to return his Oscar; there was an after-party dance of “Getting Jiggy With It!” And oh yeah, some movies won some awards. Apparently.
For all the ugliness of last night’s spectacle, it is perhaps befitting of what was the most shameful Oscars in recent memory—a capstone on an evening that seemed to be about everything except the movies...

When George Lucas first conceived the Star Wars saga, the original trilogy was just part of a larger narrative. Lucas always planned to complete the series by filling in Darth Vader’s backstory as a wayward Jedi apprentice who got corrupted by Palpatine. More than a decade after finishing the original trilogy, the technology finally existed for Lucas to make the prequels.

“Master of None” is known for deftly hopping between narratives. One episode may split its focus among an array of New Yorkers whose only bond was going to the same movie, and the next will dial in on a character trying to come out to her family over the course of several Thanksgiving dinners. Season 3 does shift its story while introducing a new central character, but unlike previous entries, it doesn’t move on. Subtitled “Moments in Love,” the truncated, five-episode Season 3 tells the story of Denise (Lena Waithe) and Alicia (Naomi Ackie) as their relationship progresses from domestic bliss to personal challenges and beyond. Fans will remember Denise from previous seasons, but a lot has changed since she last visited, and the same can be said for “Master of None.”
Anyone who missed out on the marketing campaign may be taken aback by the shift in focus. After all,...

1. “Master of None” Season 3
Why Should I Watch? By the time Season 3 premieres, it will have been more than four years since “Master of None” last dropped new episodes. Obviously, a lot has changed — as has the new season, which moves Lena Waithe’s supporting character from Seasons 1 and 2 into the spotlight. Season 3, subtitled “Moments in Love,” follows Denise and her partner Alicia (played by Naomi Ackie) as they work through long-term relationship highs and lows, including fertility challenges and divergent personal growth.
Co-creator and executive producer Aziz Ansari will still appear in the series, but his main duties have shifted to writing and directing; he helms all five episodes and co-writes the scripts, as well. Can Season 3 capture the old spark that saw “Master of None” honored with three Emmy Awards and 12 nominations?
Bonus Reason: Ansari’s investment in romance is far from a fleeting endeavor. The former “Parks and Recreation...

After four years, the popular Netflix movie series To All The Boys came to a close. When the first film, To All The Boys I've Loved Before, came out in 2018 it became one of the most re-watched original movies and Netflix - a feat the third and final film, To All The Boys: Always and Forever, is most certainly going to repeat. Czech-Slovak 1960s drama Word, inspired by the director’s grandparents, is a second instalment in a planned trilogy. Emerging Czech writer-director Beata Parkanová is currently in production with her sophomore feature Word. Parkanová’s first feature-length outing was the intimate drama Moments, unveiled in the East of the West section at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in 2018. The film is a part of an intended trilogy written by the director with autobiographical aspects. While Moments was based on her experiences, the next instalment Word is inspired by her grandparents and the trilogy should conclude with Lights, following a six-year-old protagonist. Set between 1968 and 1969, Word revolves around the married couple of Václav and Věra. They promised each other that they would stand by each other's side in good times and bad times. The story follows the couple as they are tested after Václav refuses to become a member of...

In Palm Springs, the new romantic comedy starring Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti, things couldn’t be any better, but they certainly couldn’t get much worse. Have you ever been to a resort so idyllic that you never wanted to leave? Well, what if you couldn’t leave even if you tried?
First-time director Max Barbakow and screenwriter Andy Siara are probably feeling that same “this could be heaven or this could be hell” dichotomy; on the one hand, the coronavirus pandemic kept their Sundance hit, which broke the previous record for the highest sale from the film festival, from premiering on big screens where it belonged. However, if there’s a bright side it’s that the sheltered existence most people have been living since mid-March has added strange new weight to the film’s Groundhog’s Day concept.
Samberg plays Nyles, a shaggy nihilist caught in the midst of a time-loop.

Sharon Van Etten adds an artful glow to Lucinda Williams’ “If My Love Could Kill” in her cover of the song, issued on the Alzheimer’s Association’s new compilation LP, Music Moments.
“Murderer of poets, murderer of songs/Who robbed me of your memory, who robbed me of your time,” Van Etten croons over staccato piano, pulsing synth and marching drums. “Made her way into the symphony/Of your beautiful mind, of your beautiful mind.”

Writing and recording the perfect album is a delicate art form. The very best examples possess themes and debates that run through each and every song, giving the finished article a unified and coherent feel whilst capturing the zeitgeist and reflecting the inner states of those who were part of its recording process. With this in mind, the sequencing and track-listing of the LP is of paramount importance and no song’s position is more vital than an album’s closing track.
Of course, an incendiary and arresting opening track is required to engage the listener and set out the artist’s stall but a record’s final track should offer closure. An essential closer should strive to tie-up all of the record’s loose ends, answer the questions offered throughout its preceding songs and conclude in such a way that its listener feels enriched and satisfied as the needle pops out of the groove.

In Marc Spitz's new book, "Poseur: A Memoir of Downtown New York City in the '90s," the author offers a glimpse into the gritty beginnings of his life as a rock journalist. While rubbing shoulders with Courtney Love in the late '80s and running with "It Girl" Chloë Sevigny in the '90s, Spitz lived a dark existence characterized by fame-chasing, heroin addiction and post-punk debauchery that rivaled the antics of the musicians he idolized. From his years as an unpublished poet and playwright to his career as a cover reporter for Spin magazine, the self-deprecating writer chronicles his experience in the underbelly of New York's cultural scene.
Check out an excerpt from Spitz's book below where he dishes on downtown theater, and let us know what you think of the memoir in the comments section.
