Jenny Lewis, Serengeti Share Quarantine Video for ‘Idiot’
Image
Jenny Lewis and Serengeti have released their third quarantine collaboration, “Idiot.” Produced by Lewis and Andrew Broder, the track features Lewis singing a hook over a hip-hop beat (“I’m an idiot/Forget oblivion/Joan Didion/Pacific Ocean blue”) while Serengeti raps a verse that, as he describes, is “about a man who gets knocked out by his mom’s boyfriend and then reconnects with his high school girlfriend.”

“These songs with Dave [Serengeti] start with a late-night feeling and access to — because of where we’re at right now in...

Music at Home: Songs for the Bath
Image
As summer comes to a close and sweater season begins, many of us will start to incorporate baths into our routine — or stop taking showers altogether. Whether it’s a simple bath with warm water or additions that include bath bombs, salt, candles, books, or wine, baths are an ideal way to decompress from a long day. And these days most of us need to decompress more than ever. Just ask Alabama Shakes frontwoman Brittany Howard, who’s made a delightful hobby of it: “Some people meditate, some people go for runs,...

Film Review: Railway Sleepers (2016) by Sompot Chidgasompongse
Image
When trains were first introduced to Thailand in the 1890s, through a royal decree heard at the beginning of the documentary, they were seen as a step towards progress and prosperity, but instead, the train system remained frozen in time due to corruption and inefficient management. First time director Sompot Chidgasornpongse spent 8 years, from 2008 to 2016 shooting in various railways in the country, in order to present his trip from the North to the South of Thailand, with his camera sharing the images an actual passenger would witness inside the trains. At the same time, he explains the history of the railways in Thailand, through narration and a sort of an interview with a lines’ surveyor.

“Railway Sleepers” screened at Bertha DocHouse, as part of On The Line, a season focusing on films which traverse the railways of the world.

Mostly shot with a digital camera, particularly in the interior of the trains,...

Music at Home: Nature Songs
Image
Nature hasn’t always been pop music’s closest friend. Unlike unrequited love, coming of age, or escaping your hometown on the open road, songs about oak trees or daffodils or sunny mountain faces don’t tend to inspire the type of cathartic release we expect from our most beloved anthems.

That is, until this spring, when people across the world have been forced to remain indoors indefinitely as we ride out the worst of the global coronavirus pandemic. Almost overnight, three-minute songs about clean air or fresh water sources...

Film Review: The Iron Ministry (2014) by J.P. Sniadecki
J. P Sniadecki collected footage from 2011 to 2013 on China’s humongous railway system, in order to present a film that uses everyday life inside the wagons to catch the essence of the modern Chinese society in the most realistic fashion.

“The Iron Ministry” screened at Bertha DocHouse on Monday, 28 August at 16:00, as part of On The Line, (25th – 28th August) a new season focusing on films which traverse the railways of the world.

The documentary is actually split into two parts. The first one shows a number of “episodes” occurring inside the wagons, which range from some almost grotesque sequences of people cutting meet and relieving carcasses of their feathers, to fairly “regular”, of individuals carrying huge bundles of merchandise to sell to their destination. This part is mostly silent, and has a distinct art-house feel, although the pace is faster than what is usual in such productions, as...

The track will appear on the upcoming benefit album, Let the Rhythm Lead: Haiti Song Summit, Vol. 1, out January 31st from Artists for Peace and Justice via Arts Music.

“Under the Supermoon” finds Lewis recounting the immediate aftermath of the 2016 election. After the election, she set off for Haiti to partake in the song summit that produced Let the Rhythm Lead (the title itself is a nod to the...

Jenny Lewis Isn’t Sure Why Harry Styles Picked Her as an Opening Act
Harry Styles at an event for Dunkerque (2017)
From the dawn of his post-One Direction career, Harry Styles has exhibited quality taste in opening acts: His 2017 Live on Tour shows brought along Kacey Musgraves, Leon Bridges and Warpaint in various parts of the world.

That tradition extended to the recent announcement of his Love on Tour shows: Opening on all of Styles’ American tour dates next year will be Jenny Lewis, fresh off of the acclaim for this year’s On the Line.

“I’m so excited about it,” Lewis says from her current home base in Nashville.

Jenny Lewis Gets Carried Off by Giant Pink Bunny During ‘Rabbit Hole’ Performance on ‘Fallon’
Jenny Lewis
Jenny Lewis took to the stage on The Tonight Show Wednesday night to perform “Rabbit Hole,” a cut off her latest album, On the Line.

The singer performed in a sparkly disco dress and a Sixties-style bump in her hair, singing repeatedly to a former suitor, “I’m not gonna go down the rabbit hole/With you, with you, with you again,” as she played her tambourine.

But as it turns out, maybe she would go down the rabbit hole again. Lewis’ “suitor” arrived onstage in the form of a giant pink bunny,...

Keith Urban at an event for American Idol: The Search for a Superstar (2002)

From Dave Grohl’s guitar heroics to Jenny Lewis sequin-covered set, here are the best things we saw at Pilgrimage 2019.

Beck Wails on Harmonica in New ‘Freestyle’ Video for ‘Saw Lightning’
Beck strips down his electro-folk single “Saw Lightning” to a bluesy howl in a new “Freestyle” version.

In a grainy black-and-white video, the singer-songwriter alternates between a belted vocal and distorted harmonica — accompanied only by his stomping feet. He speeds up and slows down at random, briefly slipping into a high falsetto.

The original “Saw Lightning” appears on Beck’s upcoming 14th LP, Hyperspace, which Capitol Records notes is due out “sometime in the future.” Pharrell Williams produced the song, contributing “drums, keyboards and mumbles” to the sleek cut.

Hyperspace will follow Beck’s 2017 record,...

Michael Jackson Fan Clubs in France Sue ‘Leaving Neverland’ Accusers for Defamation
Michael Jackson
Three Michael Jackson fan clubs in France have filed a lawsuit against Wade Robson and James Safechuck, the two men who accused the late pop star of sexual abuse in the HBO documentary Leaving Neverland.

The three organizations – Michael Jackson Community, Mj Street and On the Line – accused Robson and Safechuck of posthumously damaging Jackson’s reputation. While libel laws in the United States and the United Kingdom do not extend to deceased people, there are laws in France against the public denunciation of a dead person, The Associated Press reports.

See Jenny Lewis Whimsically Perform ‘Wasted Youth’ on ‘Colbert’
Jenny Lewis
Jenny Lewis and her band performed a whimsical “Wasted Youth” from her fourth solo album, On the Line, during The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Monday. She and her seven-piece band wore matching outfits with flower crown-adorned skulls in front of a flower motif backdrop.

While the song’s title recalls themes of her own difficult childhood, the performance captures the playful side of being young. On a colorful upright flanked with two bright pink phones on display, Lewis played the jaunty melody buoyed by a string section. “Why are you lying?...

Pharrell Williams
Beck recruited Pharrell Williams for the singer’s new track “Saw Lightning,” the first single off his upcoming new album Hyperspace. Beck and Williams co-wrote and co-produced the track, which melds the jangly acoustic guitar of Beck’s folksier work with the dancefloor-ready programmed beats prominent in his 2017 LP Colors; Williams also contributes, according to the song credits, “drums, keyboards and mumbles” to the track.

“Saw Lightning” also features as part of an upcoming Beats by Dre ad campaign helmed by Atlanta and “This Is America” director Hiro Murai.

Review: Jenny Lewis Tells Some Brilliant La Stories on ‘On The Line’

“I believe that one can never leave home,” wrote Maya Angelou in Letter To My Daughter; “I believe that one carries the shadows, the dreams, the fears and the dragons of home under one’s skin, at the extreme corners of one’s eyes and possibly in the gristle of the earlobe.”

That said, there must be San Fernando Valley silt in Jenny Lewis’ lobes. The child SoCal film star came out as a singer-songwriter adept in the ‘00s with Rilo Kiley, flirted with Omaha’s indie scene for a hot minute,...

Watch Jenny Lewis Dazzle ‘Kimmel’ With ‘Red Bull and Hennessy,’ ‘Wasted Youth’

Jenny Lewis brought some classic country flare to Jimmy Kimmel Live Thursday, performing two new songs “Red Bull and Hennessy” and “Wasted Youth.”

Strapped with an acoustic guitar painted pink and blue, Lewis moved through the smoldering “Red Bull and Hennessy,” which captures the peaks of desire in a new relationship, then the ways they slowly disintegrate. “I’m on fire, c’mon and get next to me/I wanna ride with you,” Lewis sang before her guitarist launched into a mesmerizing closing solo.

Jenny Lewis: 10 Great Moments from Her Stellar Career
Jenny Lewis
Jenny Lewis’ stellar songwriting chops were visible back in 2001 on Takeoffs and Landings, the first LP by Rilo Kiley, the band she co-fronted with Blake Sennett. To give some context to On The Line, her fourth solo LP, here are some highlights, past to present.

Lance Bass Inks With ICM Partners Ahead Of ‘Boy Band Con’ Bow At SXSW
Exclusive: ICM Partners said Thursday it has signed Lance Bass and his production company. The news comes ahead of the world premiere of the feature documentary The Boy Band Con: The Lou Pearlman Story at SXSW, on which Bass is an executive producer.

Boy Band Con, which will bow March 13 at the Paramount Theatre in Austin, centers on the rise and fall of Pearlman, the notorious record producer and convicted fraudster who was behind hit 1990s and early 2000s acts including Backstreet Boys, O-Town and Bass’ Nsync. It is slated to eventually premiere on YouTube.

Pearlman was convicted in 2008 for running a $300 million Ponzi scheme among other felonies and got a 25-year prison sentence. He died in 2016 at age 62.

Nsync sold more than 80 million records worldwide, led by its 2000 album No Strings Attached which sold a then-record 1.1 million copies in its first day of release.

Song You Need to Know: Jenny Lewis, ‘Redbull and Hennessy’
Jenny Lewis
“What’s the matter with me?” Jenny Lewis sings on her latest single, “Redbull & Hennessy.” On her first solo offering since 2014’s The Voyager, Lewis offers a darkly suggestive tale of dissolution and desire. Riding a sparkling Seventies pop-rock piano riff, Lewis’ narrator second-guesses herself into a haze of liquor and regret.

Lewis has long been a master at juxtaposing candy-sweet melody with ominous narrative (see 2014’s “Head Underwater,” or Rilo Kiley’s classic 2014 “Portions for Foxes”), and her latest is no exception. Lewis’ bright vocal betrays an unadorned vulnerability...

Southwest Airlines Employee Personally Delivers Luggage to Cancer Patient’s Home
A Southwest Airlines employee became a passenger’s “light in the darkness” when she personally delivered luggage filled with important cancer-related items to her home in the middle of the night.

Sarah Rowan, a Southwest Airlines customer service agent at Pittsburgh International Airport, received a call the night of July 23. On the line was Stacy Hurt, who had just flown into Pennsylvania from Nashville to make it to her chemotherapy appointment the next morning. Hurt was worried because her luggage had not yet arrived, and Rowan explained that the bags were loaded on a previous flight she had booked which had been rerouted and canceled.

“The guys spent the entire night together,” a source told People at the time. “They all sat in a group and just reunited, relived and had such a ball.

Press Gang's most mind-blowing episodes
Robin Bell Feb 6, 2017

A salute to some of the brilliant and hard-hitting episodes in Steven Moffat's first TV series, the evergreen Press Gang...
