Periphery's Misha Mansoor on His Love of Yakitate!! Japan and The Prince of Tennis
Image
For the better part of 15 years, Periphery have been pushing the sound of metal to new domains. From popularizing a sound which has come to be known as “djent” (which according to the title of their fifth album is not a genre) to touring the world playing some of the proggiest riffs you’ve ever heard, it is not a stretch to say that they are responsible for the sound of metal today. Which means that, in a transitive property chain unlike any other, anime is responsible for the way metal sounds today. That’s because guitarist Misha Mansoor has been watching anime since he was a kid, across languages and genres. I spoke with Mansoor about how anime and music speak to the larger way he loves art. Tell me a little bit about your anime origins. Misha Mansoor : So I'm just gonna caveat this right now, I...

10 Anime Sequels That Are Awful From Start to Finish
Image
There’s hardly anything that exhilarates anime fans more than when a beloved, highly acclaimed series gets a sequel. In the competitive, saturated climate of modern anime, not every seasonal show is guaranteed an opportunity to return to screens, with even fewer older classics standing a chance to receive a continuation.

However, one thing worse than an excellent series never getting a follow-up is a poorly executed sequel that leaves fans disheartened and disappointed. Failing to live up to their predecessor’s greatness, the worst anime sequels, at times, are nothing but a letdown, featuring none of the virtues that made fans fall in love with the original. Be it due to uncalled changes to the source material, a drop in production quality, or narrative incompetence, these anime sequels fail from beginning to end.

10 Best Sci-Fi Anime That Are Perfect From Start to Finish
Image
Alluring futuristic worlds, scientific speculations, and reality-bending scenarios — all of these enticing concepts make sci-fi anime the medium’s most acclaimed and fascinating genre. Science fiction in anime is prolific and varied, the genre’s exemplars making up some of the best, most celebrated titles of all time. However, like with any other genre, finding a sci-fi anime that is immaculate from start to finish is no easy task.

While high-concept sci-fi series with enticing premises aren’t hard to come by, titles that maintain the initial excitement throughout — or even exceed fans’ expectations — are rare gems that embody the genre’s most outstanding merits. These sci-fi anime series don’t feature a single dull moment, keeping the viewers engrossed in their worlds from the first episode to the moment the credits roll.

Fans Should Manage Their Expectations for Hideaki Anno’s Gundam Film
Image
This review contains mild spoilers for Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-. Proceed with caution.

In the wake of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury's success, it's safe to say that the Gundam franchise is stronger than ever. However, this is only really true for the premiere mecha anime franchise's Alternate Universes (Au). The original Universal Century (Uc), which chronicled the war between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon, has been stuck in limbo for the better part of the last 20 years. The Uc's new series and films only fill in the timeline's gaps, while not advancing the overall story forward.

But since the war ended both in-universe and in the real world, there's really nowhere else for the Uc to go. Thankfully, this stagnant status quo is about to change with the upcoming anime series Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, which began with the compilation film...

'Big Mouth' Animation Studio to Adapt Image's Horror Comic 'Nights'
Image
The animation company behind Big Mouthis setting out to make another sort of coming-of-age television series, but this time with a decidedly horrific bent. The company, Titmouse, is developing an animated series based on Image Comics' Nights, an ongoing comic currently releasing its second installment of adolescence, supernatural style.

In a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, it is said that the comic book's writer and artist — Wyatt Kennedy and Luigi Formisano, respectively — will be involved in the animation adaptation, and always envisioned the series as such rather than, say, something more live-action in nature. Titmouse hopes to keep and evoke the animation style of the comic's late '90s and early 2000s vibes, while also blending anime and indie influences as well. For those who may not be familiar, Titmouse is the home of such animated series as Legend of Vox Machina, The Venture Bros., Star Trek: Lower Decks,...

‘Nights’ Animated Series in the Works Based on Image Horror Comic (Exclusive)
Image
Nights is hoping to light up the animation world.

An animated series based on the Image Comics horror title is in development from Titmouse, the company known for the Netflix animated series Big Mouth. Nights writer Wyatt Kennedy and artis Luigi Formisano will be involved in the adaptation.

Nights launched last year, and is a supernatural coming-of-age story taking place in a 2003 in which supernatural creatures exist alongside humans, and America is made up of just 31 states. It launched with a 12-issue arc called “Season One.”

Titmouse creative director Alexei Bochenek called Nights a “generational experience in the making.”

“Reading it reminds me of when I used to stay up late watching Flcl at midnight on Toonami, having my mind blown not just by how dynamic it was, but by how seen it made me feel, a mirror to my whole self, good and bad, dreams and fears. If you know you know,...

10 Best Anime Westerns, Ranked
Image
An incredibly prominent and influential genre of fiction, Western, in the most traditional sense, refers to stories exploring the American Wild West, its culture, and folk tales. Recognized by its timeless symbols - like horse-riding cowboys, vigilant gunslingers, and the dangerous wilderness of the American frontier - Western, nonetheless, long since expanded past its initial genre definitions.

From contemporary Westerns weaving Wild West elements into urban settings to space Westerns bringing cowboys and gunslingers to space-faring worlds of the future, modern Westerns are fascinatingly diverse and no longer intrinsically tied to American culture. Western’s unique relationship with Japanese media goes back to the rise of samurai cinema in the late 20th century, with both genres influencing each other greatly. Anime also doesn’t shy away from incorporating elements of the Western genre - countless incredible series belonging to the category of anime Westerns.

10 Chaotic Dandadan Moments That Fans Can't Stop Talking About
Image
This article contains spoilers for season 1 of Dandadan.

The anime adaptation of Yukinobu Tatsu’s Dandadan brought some of the most hilarious and unhinged scenes since the airing of the cult classic, Flcl. What started as a fun venture between two teenagers aiming to prove the existence of aliens and ghosts turned into a series full of testicle jokes, suggestive content, and comically absurd moments that made Dandadan the no. 1 anime of Fall 2024.

Dandadan balances humor, drama, and high-stakes action in an unpredictable ride that will give any viewer an experience that is both equal parts enjoyable and weirdly uncomfortable. There is at least one unforgettable moment in every episode, each one carrying a wave of chaos and controversy big enough that Dandadan could ride it all the way to its second season.

Cartoon Network Failed to Land the Best New Anime of 2024
Image
There has been no shortage of outstanding new anime in 2024, and one series that held enormous potential was the anime adaptation of Junji Ito's iconic manga, Uzumaki. A master of the horrifically surreal, animated translations of Ito's longer works haven't always been the easiest to capture with grace. After a somewhat questionable live-action film adaptation in 2000, Ito's fans were skeptical when they learned Uzumaki would undergo another attempt, this time as an anime mini-series. And they had good reason to be worried.

As a medium, anime seems the perfect outlet for the surrealist psychological horror that is Uzumaki, but sometimes it takes more than just remaining faithful to a beloved story to achieve a successful anime adaptation. Liberties will always be taken, bits and pieces of the story might be altered, and that's to be expected, so fans braced for the debut of Uzumaki: Spiral Into Horror on Cartoon Network.

'They Were Trying to Belittle Us, Pay Us Less': Anime Producers Open Up About the Reality of Industry Freelance Work
Image
Buta Productions (ButaPro) CEO and co-founder Federico Antonio Russo (commonly abbreviated as Far) recently revealed the challenges their anime company faced while working alongside major Japanese studios. Before converting to a studio-based production model, Far's employees were "belittled" and financially exploited due to, among other factors, a critical lack of negotiating power.

In a recent interview with Anime Trending, Far recounted how, while doing freelance work on major productions such as Wonder Egg Priority and A Couple of Cuckoos, their workers often dealt with "issues" caused by their collaborators. "We also, in certain instances, had issues. Not necessarily every time, but it was relatively common to have issues with [the] production. People in Japan, oftentimes they were trying to belittle us, and oftentimes they were trying to find ways to pay us less, or to simply be in a position of power."

These DC Properties are Perfect for the Suicide Squad Isekai Formula
Image
Suicide Squad Isekai has been a major success for the DC property, and it showcases how malleable the group of lovable villains can be. Jumping on the bandwagon of the isekai genre being perhaps the most ubiquitous in comics, it also proves that DC can provide ample material for anime productions. While they might not necessarily all work as isekai, other DC characters and properties would be perfect for anime adaptations of their own.

These could be gritty thrillers starring street-level heroes, or cosmic political dramas featuring the willpower-wielding defenders of the universe. Said anime could be made in the same vein as other popular works in those genres. Regardless of which characters are chosen, however, there's a lot of crossover potential between the world of anime and the DC Universe.

Anime Studio Gainax Declares Bankruptcy

Gainax is best known as the studio that produced Neon Genesis Evangelion , Flcl , Gunbuster , Gurren Lagann and many more classic anime. The statement, penned by representative director Yasuhiro Kamimura, apologized to creditors, those who were working with Gainax to help alleviate the situation prior to the bankruptcy and fans. Kamimura wrote, “We had no choice but to choose bankruptcy because we were unable to fully achieve our goals.” Kamimura states that since 2012 Gainax’s “financial situation worsened" in relation to managing a restaurant, starting a CG company and sizeable unsecured loans to then-executives, all of which caused debt to accrue. Ghibli's Best Coming-of-Age Stories, Ranked

Coming-of-age is the most popular kind of character arc in Studio Ghibli films. Coming-of-age stories can be very varied, and even occur at different ages and surround different themes. Most commonly, they are stories where a child learns what it means to go from childhood into adulthood.

In some movies, it means learning lessons while establishing autonomy. Some characters learn what their true life passions and vocations could be. Other protagonists learn how to make peace with the past and determine what it means to them as they transition into adulthood. Coming-of-age doesn't always come all at once; sometimes it comes in pieces.

This Adult Swim Original is a Must Watch for Anime Fans
Image
E&h Productions, Sola Digital Arts, Sunghoo Park, and Takashi Okazaki work on Ninja Kamui, delivering intense, fast-paced fight scenes praised by viewers. Ninja Kamui's story may be lacking depth, but only because its emphasis is on action. The decision to watch Ninja Kamui subbed or dubbed depends on personal preference, with both versions offering different strengths in performances.

Every once in a while, Adult Swim or Toonami bring the American anime community something magical. It could be anything from a new season of a beloved anime, an anime in English before it was in Japanese (Space Dandy), or something else that blurs the line between Western and Eastern animation. Somebody at William Street knows how much its audience loves anime and is ready to cater to that desire with a special treat.

Wayfarer took the metal world by storm with their sweeping black metal epic album American Gothic in 2023. The album provides a unique look at the history of the United States, and drummer Isaac Faulk has previously discussed numerous different elements that influenced the album’s creation. Faulk’s long-running relationship with anime manifests itself in countless ways in Wayfarer’s music, as well as the music of his numerous other projects like Stormkeep and Blood Incantation. From anime OSTs to subject matter to artistic presentation, the medium is deeply influential in his creative process. I chatted with Faulk to learn a bit more about how Trigun and Flcl were pivotal in making one of the year’s best albums. 9 Best Streaming Services That Aren’t Funimation
Image
Funimation's shut down has been a rough blow for many anime fans. It was one of the go-to anime streaming services for years, with exclusive rights to some of the best series around. The ongoing controversy around Funimation's merger with Crunchyroll will definitely play a role as anime fans consider what the next best place to watch all their favorite series will be.

The most unfortunate aspect of Funimation's shutdown is that any media purchased through their service will no longer be available. This highlights the biggest problem with purchasing digital media: that it's not truly owned by the purchaser. This is definitely a learning experience for the anime fandom that puts the current streaming landscape into perspective. Whether anime fans have been forcibly pushed off Funimation due to their shutdown, or are simply looking for anime to check out while ignoring the drama, there are plenty of solid...

Flcl: Adult Swim Isn't Making Anymore Sequels, But That's Good
Image
Flcl, a beloved anime classic from 2000, was known for its strange and surreal storytelling that defies genre and logic. Flcl's sequels, Progressive, Alternative, Grunge, and Shoegaze, were largely unsuccessful and received criticism for bland characters and being seen as pointless downgrades from the original. Despite the financial sense behind creating more sequels, it is a good thing that the Flcl franchise is officially over to better preserve the original anime's legacy and to prevent more lackluster follow-ups.

Flcl is well-known among hardcore anime fans, especially those outside of Japan who first became interested in the medium during the early 2000s. Flcl was an early staple of Adult Swim's anime programming block and one of the better examples of anime's truly outrageous and limitless nature. Flcl was a gateway series for many curious anime newcomers, which makes it particularly disappointing that the franchise is closing its doors, albeit with...

Coolest Anime Weapons, Ranked
Image
Anime has some of the coolest and most creative weapons of any medium. While shonen anime is the first type that normally comes to mind when thinking of weapons and a large portion of anime's best-designed weapons hail from shonen series, there are others from seinen and fantasy anime, as well.

Forgotten 2000s Anime You Watched But Can't Remember the Name Of

Some of anime's coolest weapons are incredibly large and imposing, like Soul's scythe form from Soul Eater being larger than its wielder, or Nicholas D. Wolfwood's human-sized cross from Trigun. Others are unassuming everyday items, like guitars or notebooks, that surprisingly make for some of the most deadly weapons in their respective universes.

Which Anime Are The Weirdest?
Image
"How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift?" breaks the mold by focusing on the impact of a healthy lifestyle rather than the typical cute or romantic scenarios. "Tonari no Seki-kun: The Master of Killing Time" captivates viewers with its simplistic yet creative ways of passing time in class, leaving them flabbergasted. "Kotaro Lives Alone" may seem like a lighthearted comedy, but it tackles serious issues like child neglect and abandonment, surprising viewers with its depth.

The wonderful world of anime has given audiences stories based on almost everything. From bizarre plots revolving around fantasy beings enjoying high school life on Earth to mecha machines coming out of a guy’s head, the fans have seen it all. However, some anime series walk on the thin rope between total madness and portraying unconventional themes that more or less make sense.

Image
Rick and Morty Season 7 kicks off with a new narrative as Rick tries to figure out how to take out Rick Prime. Birdperson, Rick's best friend, has a bigger mission to tend to than supporting Rick's crew. Birddaughter, Birdperson's daughter, hates him and is into petty crime, causing trouble for her father. The following contains spoilers for Rick and Morty Season 7, Episode 1, "How Poopy Got His Poop Back," which aired Oct. 15 on Adult Swim.

As Season 7 of Rick and Morty kicks off, it's safe to say the show has transitioned past the Justin Roiland issue. Thankfully, Rick and Morty doesn't have a voice problem, as many felt it would have after Roiland's firing. This allows for a quick segue into the new narrative, with Rick trying to figure out how to take out Rick Prime.

10 Best Anime Every Fan of Metal Music Needs to Watch
Image
Deciding whether an anime is fitting for Heavy Metal music fans or not is a tricky proposition, but this selection ought to give a good sense of what it entails. A "metal" anime needs more than just a soundtrack full of screaming and guitars, though it does help. Rather, the following selection of shows has an edge to them that pushes audiences out of their comfort zone.

There are many ways to be metal enough for genre enthusiasts to take an interest. Besides getting the right band on board, this selection also has suitably gritty tales, extreme visuals, or just simply has characters putting in the right guitar work. Either way, metal fans have a breadth and variety of hard-edged shows they can appreciate when they want both a visual and an audio experience to get their adrenaline pumping.

Flcl Grunge Review: A Weak Start With Great Promise of Potential
Image
Flcl: Grunge has sparked controversy among fans due to its divisive 3D animated art style, which many feel doesn't capture the feel of the original series. The introduction of Shin, the protagonist of Grunge, has been criticized as weaker compared to previous seasons, with his lack of personality and resemblance to past characters. Despite its animation and character flaws, Grunge has potential in its greater narrative and exploration of a dying Earth, but whether it can overcome the animation style remains uncertain.

The third Flcl sequel series, Flcl: Grunge, began airing on Adult Swim's Toonami block, but the series premiere has many fans questioning the creative decisions behind the series.

Flcl was an Ova series originally released in the 1990s which found success as a cult classic on Adult Swim's late night anime in the mid-2000s. It was originally created by Gainax, and was the immediate follow-up to Neon Genesis Evangelion,...

Children of the Sea Explained: What Does the Ending Mean?
Image
Children of the Sea is a visually stunning and philosophically complex film, comparable to Neon Genesis Evangelion. The climax of the film is visually outstanding but narratively complex, with protagonist Ruka experiencing a perspective change of a lifetime as she becomes immersed in intergalactic sea life. The film explores deep concepts of the microcosm-macrocosm relationship and humanity's place within the cosmos.

Children of the Sea is a difficult film to understand. Directed by Ayumu Watanabe and adapted from Daisuke Igarashi's five-volume manga, the film is philosophically comparable to Neon Genesis Evangelion. Watanabe's psychedelic antics have successfully intrigued, dazzled, and ultimately bamboozled countless viewers, some of whom still aren't clear about the movie's conclusion.

Far and away the most confusing part of the film is the climax, wherein protagonist Ruka is absorbed into a maelstrom of intergalactic sea life and spat out the other end with the perspective change of a lifetime.

Flcl: Grunge Review – A Lackluster But Colorful Return
Image
This review contains no spoilers and is based on the first episode of Flcl: Grunge.

“The people who live here never think about the future…”

Flcl is a cherished anime relic of the 2000s that’s only six episodes, but still found international acclaim after airing on Adult Swim in 2003. It’s frequently considered to be the golden goose of anime coming-of-age stories where lost youth accept the unpredictable nature of life and embrace the harsh truth that nobody has full control over the world’s whims.

Flcl’s success was lightning in a bottle programming that in all likelihood probably shouldn’t have been (repeatedly) returned to and milked into an increasingly generic IP. Adult Swim’s previous sequels, Flcl: Progressive and Flcl: Alternative weren’t received as well and seemed to touch on the same ideas, albeit in new ways, but with diminishing returns. This understandably...
