Austin Nichols Says Filming Kiss With 15-Year-Old Mary-Kate Olsen “Felt Wrong”
Austin Nichols
Austin Nichols has spoken about a moment from early in his acting career that he now views with discomfort. While appearing on the Drama Queens podcast, Nichols described his experience filming a kiss scene with then-15-year-old Mary-Kate Olsen in the 2001 teen movie Holiday in the Sun, saying the situation felt inappropriate at the time.

“I was definitely nervous because Mary-Kate was 15, and I was, I think, 18 or 19, or maybe even 20,” Nichols said. “I don’t remember, but I was too old, and it felt weird, and it felt wrong.”

He explained that although the characters appeared age-compatible on screen, he remained aware of the age difference while filming. “I looked very young, so watching the movie, I don’t think you notice. I’m real tall and skinny and, like, nerdy, but I don’t think you can tell there’s a big age difference. But for my brain,...

Nearly 25 years later, one of the Olsen Twins‘ leading men is reflecting on the problematic nature of their onscreen romance.

Austin Nichols, who starred alongside the twins in 2001’s Holiday in the Sun, recalled that his kiss scene with Mary-Kate Olsen “felt wrong,” acknowledging that she and Ashley were “children” at the time.

“I was definitely nervous because Mary-Kate was 15, and I was, I think, 18 or 19, or maybe even 20,” he said on the Drama Queens podcast. “I don’t remember, but I was too old, and it felt weird, and it felt wrong. And, you know, I looked very young, so watching the movie, I don’t think you notice. I’m real tall and skinny and, like, nerdy, but I don’t think you can tell there’s a big age difference, but for my brain, was like, she’s 15, this is not, this is weird.”

Nichols continued, “So...

16 Problems Only People From Madison Wisconsin Will Understand
Wikipedia

I’m sure that everyone says this about their city, but there’s just nothing quite like living in Madison. And that’s not just local pride talking, either. Madison is constantly ranked at or near the top of the list when it comes to The Best Places To Live In the Us.

Why? The real question is why would you even ask that? Bucky Badger, Babcock ice cream, Concerts on the Square, Olbrich Gardens, The Onion, the bike paths, the festivals, the insane abundance of craft beer and bars! But hey, you don’t need the full list of why Madison is so special because you live that list every damn day as a proud Madisonian.

Still, despite the overall amazingness that is Madison, Wisconsin, it’s not entirely perfect. (It’s just so damn near perfect that we can easily overlook any small issues the city may have.

TV Now: Is the Era of the Big 5 Networks Officially Over?
For the past decade we have been hearing how the television industry is becoming increasingly outdated. But that was more a reflection on its slowness to embrace new technology – whether it was digital media, social media or just recognizing that cord-cutters are growing by leaps and bounds. Less acknowledged is the reality that the Big 5 networks of television are also falling by the wayside due to their dinosaurian programming slates. At the century mark, television was still dominated by the Big 5 of ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and the CW.

Shows not seen on those networks were few and far between – make that “scripted” shows. There was always plenty of “reality TV” fare to be found, whether it was game shows, competition series, cooking shows, sports or recycled movies. But the last decade launched not only new changes in how television was consumed via the Internet, but where it could be found.

Screens and Concept Art From ‘Deadpool’ Video Game
New details on Activision and High Moon Studios’ upcoming Deadpool video game have been released at GamesCon this week, which were accompanied by the release of several new screenshots and concept art from the title. Currently being penned by former Deadpool writer Daniel Way, the upcoming third-person game will feature cameo appearances from several X-Men team members and will allow fans to take control of a wide selection of Deadpool-specific weaponry (ie, machine guns, knives, explosives, duct tape, etc).

Be sure to check out the “official” fact sheet for the game [see bottom of post] that was released alongside the screenshots, written by Deadpool himself!

A Note From Developer High Moon Studios

You may be wondering why our game character is writing his own fact sheet. Our team also wondered and wasn’t all that aware of who Deadpool was until this red-suited, katana-wielding Marvel Super Hero burst through our door. But after a...

War Horse Premiere. Oscar Updates Soon.
Just a quick note that tonight -- er, last night -- was a big night. It was the World Premiere of War Horse here in NYC. After I sleep on it, I'll finish updating the Oscar charts for the week. The red carpet was long but, as you know, most of the War Horse cast are relative newcomers.

And most of them took to the stage to introduce the film. It was particularly exciting to see Emily Watson looking great and Tom Hiddleston being ridiculously sexy in what I think was a velvet suit (?). Steven Spielberg apologized that he didn't bring the horse "Joey" on to the stage to introduce the movie but joked that it would not be fair since several horses played the role.  The audience was filled with luminaries as well. Spotted: Phyllicia Rashad, Tyler Perry, Celia Weston, Stephen Daldry (adorably huggy with David Kross who he...

You Instead review
David Mackenzie’s rom-com, You Instead, was shot in just five days. Here’s Carley’s review of a film that doesn’t quite overcome its low-budget status…

We’ve just come to the end of another great British summer, filled with barbecues, long walks on the beach, and sun-drenched music festivals. No, scratch that – it was filled with rain, disappointment and muddy music festivals. But in spite of the horrible weather, the music festival has become a British obsession, with hundreds sprouting up over the summer. These range from big ones, such as Reading and V, to smaller ones, like the Ben & Jerry’s Sundae Festival (free ice cream – yum).

It was probably only a matter of time, then, before one of these became the setting for a romantic comedy, which is exactly what you get with director David Mackenzie’s You Instead, filmed on location at 2010’s T in the Park in Scotland.

'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1': Behind-the-scenes video
Helena Bonham Carter
This might only be for rabid Harry Potter fans (so, most of us, I guess?), but some newly released behind-the-scenes footage offers a nice, offbeat glimpse at the filming of Deathly Hallows, Part 1. Among the choice scenes: Helena Bonham Carter cracking up in full Bellatrix regalia; Mark Williams and Julie Walters as the Weasleys, practicing their dancing for the wedding; and some fun shots of Robbie Coltrane and Daniel Radcliffe on the motorcycle. Also funny (to me, at least), Radcliffe and Rupert Grint manfully slinging their wands and shouting “Stupefy!” to a nearly silent room. See the videos embedded after the jump.

Totalement jumelles (2001)
Warner Brothers overhaul of 'Harry Potter' studio to include exhibit, tour: Dreams Do come true!
Totalement jumelles (2001)
I wouldn’t call myself a Harry Potter fanatic, but even I’ve had the dreams: You’re walking the misty grounds of Hogwarts, mesmerized by the magical sight before you, when a group of uniform-clad kids stops you and invites you to play a game of Quidditch. Anyone? Just me? Okay…

Regardless, I know that will never happen, but the second best thing is on the way. Warner Brothers confirmed to EW that a Harry Potter exhibit will be part of their multimillion dollar overhaul of Leavesden Studios in London, which has been home to the Potter film franchise for the last decade.

Daniel Radcliffe on 'The Simpsons': 'Harry Potter' star pokes fun at 'Twilight'
Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Dan Castellaneta, and Yeardley Smith in Les Simpson (1989)
When pop culture phenomenons collide: On The Simpsons’ annual “Treehouse of Horror” episode — which aired last night, bringing relief of all us still dealing with Halloween withdrawal — Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe voiced a vampire character named Edmund, who, naturally, closely resembled a certain Twilight hero, even if his green eyes weren’t so golden. (And even if he couldn’t quite convince Lisa to transform into a fellow immortal being: “Eight forever? Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. I can’t spend eternity using kids’ scissors. They barely cut anything!”) But there wasn’t just a two-part pop culture collision on The Simpsons last night — Radcliffe,...

New 'Harry Potter' featurette: Same drama. New joke!
Daniel Radcliffe
Because we think it’s worth watching Daniel Radcliffe speak anytime he has stubble, and we can’t get enough of that Harry doppelgänger scene, we suggest you watch the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I behind-the-scenes video below. Mad-Eye Moody gets a great line when the gang arrives to transport Harry: “Yeah, he’s absolutely gorgeous. Let’s say we get undercover before someone murders him.” Cherish that dark humor, friends. It’s all the levity you may get.

Rupert Grint, Daniel Radcliffe, and Emma Watson in Harry Potter et les Reliques de la Mort : partie 1 (2010)
What pop culture phenomena still lies before you unspoiled, making your friends insanely jealous?
Rupert Grint, Daniel Radcliffe, and Emma Watson in Harry Potter et les Reliques de la Mort : partie 1 (2010)
The new behind-the-scenes featurette on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 below doesn’t really tell us anything new — they’re alone, on the run, outside Hogwarts, we know — but it does run through the first six films in the series in a way that made me think how amazing it would be if you’ve never read the books or seen the movies and still have all of that to look forward to. The idea was fresh in my mind after seeing a recent trailer for Deathly Hallows, turning to the friend I was with, and having...

'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' tickets now on sale
Michael Gambon, Rupert Grint, Daniel Radcliffe, and Emma Watson in Harry Potter et le Prince de sang-mêlé (2009)
The end is officially beginning. Tickets for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I, which hits theaters Nov. 19, are now available. What’s your plan? Midnight screening? Opening night? Opening weekend? More importantly: To take the wand or to not take the wand? I remember really wishing I owned a wand to raise at the end of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. And now I do… What will you do?

'Harry Potter': New TV spots are dark (unless pale Radcliffe is in a bra)
Michael Gambon, Rupert Grint, Daniel Radcliffe, and Emma Watson in Harry Potter et le Prince de sang-mêlé (2009)
New TV spots for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I continue to make some fans want to pee themselves out of fear and/or anticipation. A few things are becoming clear (besides how good the special effects are looking): For starters, the filmmakers will rely on the multiple-Harrys Polyjuice Potion scene to lighten the mood. “Look away. I’m hideous,” says Hermione-Harry when her body takes the shape of his (pictured). They want you to know that romance is still a part of the story, even if it won’t be as prominent as it was in...

Another day, another new set of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I posters. This crop continues the unsettling tone with shots of Bellatrix Lestrange and Lucius Malfoy, and Scabior and Fenrir Greyback staring us down. View them below, along with a slightly Twilight-esque photo of Hermione and Ron (though Edward would never wear that shirt). But first, check out this surprisingly sexy image of Hermione and Harry and remember all the times you wanted those two to couple. (Not just me, I assume.)

I know their friendship is one of the books’ most beautiful relationships — that deep of...

'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows': New posters let you look the main characters in the eyes
Daniel Radcliffe
With 42 days left until the release of the highly anticipated Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I, Warner Bros. has released seven new character posters to further promote the film. The posters are simple, dark, and totally striking, spotlighting one of the film’s seven major characters: Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint), Hermione (Emma Watson), Snape (Alan Rickman), Bellatrix Lestrange (Helena Bonham Carter), Fenrir Greyback (Dave Legeno), and Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes). (Collector’s item, anyone?) I was ridiculously excited to see this movie even before I saw these posters, but now I am beyond ready for Nov. 19th.

Totalement jumelles (2001)
New 'Harry Potter' posters aren't playing around
Totalement jumelles (2001)
I don’t know if I’ve ever been as invested in a movie as I am Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I. I’ve already teared up reading about the cast talking about how it looks like a war film with the massive destruction done to Hogwarts. The new posters, featuring Harry, Hermione, and Ron on the run with their wands drawn and the tagline “Nowhere is safe,” preys upon that intense reaction (which was echoed by more than one reader). They’re dirty and bruised and looking over their shoulders in a way no teen should ever have to.
