For the last couple of months in The Daily Briefs, I’ve been counting down my list of the top 40 horror movies of the 80′s, and now it’s time to unveil #1. But first, here’s a look back at #40 – 2.

Pacific Rim is without a doubt my favorite film of the summer. Indeed, I can’t think of a recent big summer movie I’ve loved anywhere near this much. The action, the visuals, and the sheer spectacle on display are second to none. Beyond that, though, I genuinely like the story and characters. While Travis Beacham and Guillermo del Toro’s screenplay isn’t going to be accused of being the most original thing in the world, the way everything is put together feels so fresh. I’m a big fan of how streamlined and straightforward the story is. Everything about the world is so vivid that it doesn’t need a convoluted, labyrinthine plot to hold up. It works because it delivers heroes doing everything in their power to save the world from monsters (Kaiju) hellbent on destroying it.

Small asteroids tear apart an abandoned Soviet space station causing its orbit to degrade and one of the modules to crash into the NYC Subway system. Officers of the Transit Authority discover lethal spiders pouring out of the debris. Soon the military arrives and establishes martial law claiming there is a deadly virus contaminating the area. This is the latest installment in a long line of awful monster movies directed by Tibor Takacs. It joins Rats (2003) Mega Snake (2007) and Ice Spiders (2007) in his pantheon of projectile vomit.

FM has been covering the theatrical and festival circuit that Spiders has been on ever since it premiered at the 3D Film Festival in Los Angeles back in September. The movie is finally nearing its limited release on February 8th, with it being available on VOD that same day. Today we begin part 1 of a 3 part series in which we talk with the man behind the camera and the two stars in front of it. That would be Tibor Takacs, Patrick Muldoon, and Christa Campbell, respectively.

First up is director Tibor Takacs, a man with a lengthy filmography spanning all sorts of genres, featuring such titles as Sabrina The Teenage Witch, The Outer Limits, The Gate, Mansquito, Rats, Ice Spiders, and My Babysitter’S A Vampire. Tibor Takacs loves him some nature-run-amok action.  The man who gave us titles like Mega Snake, Rats, Mansquito and Ice Spiders (not to mention The Gate) is back with Spiders 3D.  

The flick is in post-production (so says the IMDb, but I swear I've been hearing about this damn movie forever and figured it was done by now) and we found a spiffy new one-sheet.  You can find a larger version after the jump.

Spiders 3D comes to us from Millennium Films, the company behind this week's release The Expendables 2 and the forthcoming The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D.  Maybe they'll squeak this one into theaters?

A poster for Tobe Hooper's Crocodile hangs framed in this L.A.-based guest house-cum-office where writer-director Adam Gierasch works. Even if it's not the most inspired piece of artwork (a reptilian eye staring out from the dark), the one-sheet is rare. One of only a few made. It dwarfs some of the other promo pieces adorning the walls here. Neatly lined up above Gierasch's computer: Sales art for other films he's penned with partner Jace Anderson. Crocodile 2 ("Death Swamp," bitches!). Another Hooper effort (arguably his best in some time) The Toolbox Murders . Dario Argento's Mother of Tears . Rats .
