Originally released as an arcade game in 1989, the same year in which Gekikame Ninja Den (1989) was released on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) home console. When the arcade game was ported to the NES a year later, it was re-titled as 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game', suggesting it was a sequel to Gekikame Ninja Den (1989). Even though both games have many elements in common, they do not occur within the same continuity.
In contrast to Gekikame Ninja Den (1989), which was primarily based on the TMNT comics, this game included much more elements from the popular animated TV series Les tortues ninjas (1987), such as Baxter Stockman and Krang, and the theme music.
For the NES version of the game, the original arcade levels were extended, and two new levels and bosses were added: a snow-covered park where the Turtles have to defeat Tora and his climate-changing machine, and a dojo that is guarded by Shogun, a mechanical samurai. The NES version also features quite explicit product placement from Pizza Hut.
This is the 2nd of 5 TMNT games by Konami.

1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles I (NES) 2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game (Arcade/NES) 3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: The Manhattan Project (NES) 4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time (Arcade/SNES) 5. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles V: The Hyperstone Heist (GEN) 6. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles VI: Shredder's Revenge (Switch) by DotEmu
