A Proper Trailer For Thanapon Maliwan’s The Sanctuary

Thanapon Maliwan’s The Sanctuary is a film that we’ve been tracking here for a good while now. Maliwan rose to attention as one of the directors in the Pechpanna Productions stable, the Thai action outfit where both Panna Rittikrai and Tony Jaa got their starts, Maliwan directing both Jaa and his mentor is at least one early pre-Ong Bak film together. And then there’s star Mike B, a Thai stunt man who was one of the key stunt performers in Ong Bak who Maliwan has been grooming for stardom for a little while.

This particular project began life as Dead End before finance troubles forced it to be suspended for a while and Maliwan and Mike B went off and made inconsistent action-comedy Brave instead. That project out of the way the materials from Dead End were reworked and redeveloped and the project re-launched as The Sanctuary...

Universal's "Mamma Mia!" grabbed the No. 1 spot on the overseas circuit for the first time, grossing an estimated $15 million during the weekend from 3,493 screens in 39 markets to best Warner Bros.' "The Dark Knight" by about $3.2 million.

The surprise smash musical adaptation of the stage hit opened at No. 1 in Portugal with an estimated $804,000 from 65 sites for a per-screen average of $12,369. In Korea, it premiered at No. 2 (after the local-language "Divine Weapon") with an estimated $5.5 million from 370 screens. In both markets the film registered the biggest opening gross ever for a musical title.

With an international gross of $280.1 million, "Mamma Mia!" has eclipsed Disney's "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" -- which has accumulated $275.1 million overseas and $416.1 million worldwide -- to become 2008's fifth-biggest boxoffice hit overseas. It has 16 markets to play and opens this weekend in France, Belgium, Brazil, Mexico, Hong Kong and India.

Companies add films to Jaman.com
NEW YORK -- Indie feature film download site Jaman.com has signed distribution deals with Fortissimo Films, Trust Film and Fortune Star and forged a new pact with Dreamachine.

Each 5-to-10-year deal makes many titles available for online download the first time. The Dreamachine agreement builds upon an initial 42-film distribution deal signed in May. Features from the company's Celluloid Dreams and the HanWay Films libraries include Bernardo Bertolucci (The Last Emperor), Wim Wenders (Buena Vista Social Club), David Cronenberg (Naked Lunch), Woody Allen (Match Point) and Kore-Eda Hirokazu (After Life) will be included.

Fortissimo's lineup of mainly Asian features includes Shunji Iwai's All About Lily Chou Chou and Danny and Oxide Pang's Bangkok Dangerous. Trust Film's collection includes several pictures from Lars von Trier (Dancer in the Dark, Dogville) and such directors as Susanne Bier, Lukas Moodysson, and Thomas Vinterberg.

Jaman.com will present the Fortune Star Film Festival, featuring the company's slate grouped as The Best in Martial Art, Legend of Lee's Family (with Bruce and Brandon Lee films), Legend of Chow Yun Fat and The Hollywood Asian Babes (with Maggie Cheung and Michelle Yeoh).
