Geeks Vs Loneliness: coming out as depressed
Robb Sheppard Sep 1, 2017

Telling people you're facing depression can be very tricky - but it's worth it.

Welcome to Geeks Vs Loneliness, our spot on the site where we talk about things that are affecting us, you, people we know, people we don't. We don't offer miracle cures, just a few thoughts that will hopefully be useful to a few people. This week, we're handing over to Robb, to talk about his own battle with depression...

It’s just a phase. You’ll grow out of it. Pull your socks up.

These are all phrases which have undoubtedly been heard by every one of us at one point or another. For some it was about their hairstyle, for some their sexuality, for some their body image. It was barely ever about loosely fitting footwear. For many, it was about depression...

Imagine Dragons Frontman Leads Moment of Silence for Chris Cornell at 2017 Billboard Music Awards
Chris Cornell
The 2017 Billboard Music Awards paid tribute to rocker Chris Cornell with a touching moment of silence on Sunday.

Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds led the homage, with an emotional speech about the late rocker’s life and legacy.

“Although tonight is a time to celebrate the music and artists of the past year, it’s also a time to recall a member of our community we lost this past week,” he said. “Soundgarden and Audioslave’s Chris Cornell was a true innovator. A musical architect and pioneer on the cutting edge of the Seattle grunge movement. He was a prolific songwriter,...

Chris Cornell’s Friend Says Rocker Seemed to Be ‘Really Fighting to Get Through’ Show Before Suicide
Chris Cornell
Nearly 48 hours after Chris Cornell died of suicide by hanging following a performance at Detroit’s Fox Theatre, fans and loved ones of the late rocker returned to the Michigan concert venue to pay their respects in a touching sidewalk candlelight vigil.

Among the roughly 50 mourners gathered in the cold, drizzly evening was Detroit artist and musician Kevin Morris — a friend of Cornell’s and onetime roadie for the singer’s bands Soundgarden and Audioslave.

Morris, who talked to Cornell six to seven times a year including at the beginning of what now has become the 52-year-old frontman’s final tour,...

Chris Cornell Ended His Final Concert With a Song About Dying (Video)
Chris Cornell
This is pretty spooky. Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell, who died of a possible suicide after his band’s performance at the Fox Theatre in Detroit, Michigan on Wednesday, closed out his final concert with a song about death. Cornell and company capped the concert, which was loaded with Soundgarden favorites such as “Black Hole Sun” and “Fell on Black Days,” with a performance of their song “Slaves and Bulldozers,” from their 1991 album “Badmotorfinger,” mixed with a refrain from the Led Zeppelin track “In My Time of Dying.” Also Read: Hollywood's Notable Deaths of 2017 (Photos) Sample lyrics: “In my time of dying,...

Chris Cornell
Chris Cornell played his final, sold-out performance with band Soundgarden on Wednesday night in Detroit, just hours before he was found dead in his hotel room after the show — and ended the show with a song about death.

The 52-year-old rocker, who first gained fame as the lead singer of Soundgarden and later the band Audioslave, ended the set with a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “In My Time of Dying,” CNN reports.

“In my time of dying, I want nobody to mourn/All I want for you to do is take my body home,” Cornell sang.

TV Review: Supernatural 8×06 – “Southern Comfort”
Supernatural 8×06: Southern Comfort

Stars: Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins, Mark Sheppard, Osric Chau | Written by Eric Kripke, Adam Glass| Directed by Tim Andrew

Revenge is a dish best served, well, you know the rest. And if there are two characters who know all about revenge, it’s Sam and Dean. Isn’t their initial quest all about avenging a murder, the thing that motivated them all along? And as we all know, a long ways back, they avenged. It seemed that anger at the needless death would have subsided and yes, it did seemingly. There was that fantastic story arc in season four where Sam went dark side and he and Dean fought and fought hard. I loved it. I relished in it. But, like all things, they healed. They moved on. But, all old wounds have this nasty habit of opening up and ripping at you with...

Klone – The Eye Of Needle Album Review
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Release date: 26th March

Progressive metal is a genre that’s been explored and abetted by plenty of bands in recent times: most notably the big names such as Isis, Mastodon, Pelican and Tool have arguably had the biggest impact on the genre. But there are other bands as well, that may not have had as big an impact but have nevertheless done the rounds and have shown their take on the genre and have delved into it. Even though these bands are small, they still make a difference – they may be a young musician’s favourite band and therefore that musician could go on and form a band of his own and carry the torch instead. A prime example of a band like this is Sikth, who are one of the most revered bands in the genre.

Chris Cornell “Songbook” Album Review
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

As lead singer for Soundgarden and Audioslave, Chris Cornell carved out a reputation as one of the finest rock singers of his or any generation, and in Songbook, his brand new acoustic live solo album, he proves once again what that reputation was founded on. Cornell takes up his acoustic guitar and leads the listener through sixteen careful chosen tracks with the engaging presence of a man completely at ease with his own abilities.

Cornell’s voice has always been soaked in soul, as well as carrying an irresistible smokey edge that injected poignancy to even the most bold rock songs he lent it to in his former roles, and it has never sounded as good or as hard-hitting as when teamed up here with a simple guitar as company. Most importantly, for an artist who was somewhat cruelly criticised from some quarters about his decision...

Listen: Chris Cornell’s “The Keeper” From Machine Gun Preacher
Former Soundgarden and Audioslave front-man Chris Cornell is rightly heralded as one of the greatest rock singers of his generation, and next month (on the 21st to be specific) sees the release of his latest new album. “Songbook” will feature live performances from his current tour of the same name, including acoustic versions of essential Cornell-penned tracks, like the iconic brilliance of “Black Hole Sun” as well as covers. The full track list follows below.

Recently, Cornell wrote and performed ‘The Keeper,’ the poignant original song for Relativity’s feature film Machine Gun Preacher (directed by Marc Forster) which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival this month, and is set for wider release in the UK on November 2nd. The film stars Gerard Butler and is based on the true story of Sam Childers, a former drug-dealing criminal who finds faith leading him on a path to help the children of East Africa.

Books: Book Review: Mick Wall: Enter Night: A Biography Of Metallica
Maybe it isn’t Mick Wall’s fault that he’s insufferably self-obsessed. One of the writers immortalized by name in Guns N’ Roses’ anti-journalist screed “Get In The Ring,” he’s taken that notoriety as license to inject himself shamelessly into his rock books, most notably Paranoid: Black Days With Sabbath & Other Horror Stories, which gives more ink to its author than to its ostensible subject. Wall’s latest, Enter Night: A Biography Of Metallica, is by all appearances a conventional bio. Yet he feels the need to cast himself as some sort of important player in Metallica’s ...

Klone Debut Eerie Clip for "Give Up the Rest"
Stirling Gardner, D. Reynolds, and Shiva Rose in Black Days (2001)
Klone is an extreme metal band from France who seem to be busting their way onto the world stage lately, and for damn good reason: they tend to mix up lots of unusual musical styles, themes and instruments (including loops, exotic percussion, harp, flute, even saxophone) to create a massive, nightmarish sound that is all kinds of epic. They've just released a new video for the track "Give Up the Rest" from their latest album Black Days – the imagery is haunting in a low-key way, but the song itself will shake the paint off your walls, so check in and check it out! "Give Up the Rest" is one of eleven tracks from Black Days – which came out earlier this year in Europe through Season of Mist Records...

Soundgarden Reunited For First Show In Thirteen Years
Soundgarden played their very first show together in thirteen years at Showbox at the Market in Seattle on Friday night. Billed as "NudeDragons" (an anagram of Soundgarden), Chris Cornell and the guys played a 100-minute set in anticipation of their headlining gig at Lollapalooza.

Even billed as NudeDragons, the show sold out within minutes, with tickets going for as much as 00. The secret fan show kicked off at 10pm, with the band kicking off with the single "Spoonman" from their 1994 best-seller, "Superunknown."

While they played another "Superunknown cut," "Fell on Black Days," one track was noticeably missing: their biggest hit, "Black Hole Sun." Instead, the set included tracks from their 1988 debut "Ultramega Ok," like "Flower" and "Beyond the Wheel."

1989's "Louder than Love" was represented in songs like "Gun," "Hands All Over," and "Big Dumb Sex," while 1991's "Rusty Cage," "Outshined," and "Slaves & Bulldozers" were lifted from 1991's "Batmotorfinger." They...

Soundgarden Reunite In Seattle For Secret Show
For first concert in 13 years, set list includes 'Spoonman,' 'Outshined,' other fan faves.

Soundgarden's Chris Cornell performs in Seattle on Friday

Seattle — On Friday night, 13 years after last taking the stage together, the members of grunge-era band Soundgarden reunited in front of about 1,000 fans at Seattle's Showbox at the Market for a rousing performance that kicked off with fan favorite "Spoonman" and closed with a cover of the Doors' "Waiting for the Sun."

The surprise performance comes just four months after singer Chris Cornell proclaimed that Soundgarden would return to action. Since that January announcement, the band's inclusion in August's Lollapalooza festival in Chicago had been made public, but no additional concert dates had been set.

On Thursday afternoon, Seattle radio station 107.7 "The End" began tweeting about the possibility of a "secret" show, and news soon spread that fans on the band's...
