Anyone with eyes can see that shared universes are all the rage these days, and have been ever since Nick Fury invited Tony Stark to talk about the Avengers Initiative back in 2008. While some shared universes are continuing to persevere (like Marvel and the Dcu), others put their cart a little too far before the horse. Sure, it's gotta be nice for studios and filmmakers alike to build a large sandbox to play within, but more often than not, it's better to just start playing and reveal a sandbox later. That's how a few auteur filmmakers named Quentin Tarantino and Kevin Smith did it in the 1990s, peppering in connections between their films that, in Smith's case, resulted in a full-blown "Avengers"-style crossover movie in the form of "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back." Of course, the horror genre kicked off this entire cinematic shared universe thing, beginning with...

Netflix has shared the premiere date for The Rip, a new crime thriller film from writer-director Joe Carnahan. Starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, the film will begin streaming on January 16, 2026.
The Rip is officially described as follows: “Upon discovering millions in cash in a derelict stash house, trust among a team of Miami cops begins to fray. As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything is called into question, including who they can rely on.”
The cast also includes Steven Yeun, Kyle Chandler, Teyana Taylor, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and Sasha Calle.
“The Rip came out of a deeply personal experience that my friend went through, both as a father and as head of tactical narcotics for the Miami-Dade police department,” Carnahan told the Netflix blog Tudum.
“It’s inspired in part by his life and then, by my enduring love for those classic ’70s cop thrillers...

The Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park is located in the northern part of Los Angeles County, about a 45-minute drive from Hollywood proper (depending on traffic). They are a popular tourist destination because the layered rock formations jut out of the ground at strange, wild angles, giving them an alien look. They were named after Tiburcio Vásquez, a notoriously clever Mexican bandit who hid out among the rocks while eluding the cops back in the 1870s. Hikers have been hiding out among the rocks ever since, admiring their otherworldly beauty.
Vasquez Rocks has been a popular shooting destination for dozens of major films and TV shows, largely because they're such a short drive from all the production offices in Los Angeles. It's easy to bundle the cast of "Star Trek" into a van, dress three stuntman as a Gorn character, and go to the Rocks to film actors pretend-fight each other.

Exclusive: Goodfellas is getting behind Kevin Smith’s mission to theatrically re-release his controversial 1999 religious satire Dogma, starring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon as fallen angels, after a tumultuous launch first time round.
The maverick Paris-based sales company has acquired international rights to the remastered 4K edition of the film, which is screening in the Cannes Film Festival’s Cannes Classics sidebar this year.
The Cannes splash follows Smith’s announcement last October that he had gotten the rights back to the movie which had been out of his hands since the initial release. This acquisition was made by Triple Media Film in partnership with View Askew Productions.
Under the care of Triple Media Film, the film is fully remastered in 4K, and was supervised by Oscar-nominated director of photography Robert Yeoman, who was the cinematographer on Dogma, ahead of going to work on multiple films with Wes Anderson including The Grand Budapest Hotel.

While it's true that Ben Affleck hasn't starred in a bona fide box office hit in nearly a decade, he's still firmly a member of the Hollywood A-list. His latest film, The Accountant 2, is having a solid theatrical run, although it could be argued that it'll actually find its audience when it lands on streaming. Distributed domestically by Amazon MGM Studios, The Accountant 2 is a sequel to the Affleck-led 2016 film The Accountant, which was distributed by Warner Bros. The first movie has developed quite a cult following on home video in the years since its release, which no doubt inspired a sequel to be green-lit. The Accountant 2 hasn't recovered its reported budget yet, but it has already overtaken several of Affleck's past films.
Most recently, it overtook the largely forgotten crime movie Runner Runner, which concluded its run with under $65 million worldwide, and less than $20 million domestically.

Nepo babies seem to be all the rage in Hollywood right now. You can't swing a stick in this town without hitting someone whose parent is a casting director able to pull some strings to get them a recurring role on a sitcom. Many actors are nepo babies that the general public may be completely unaware of, like Daisy Edgar-Jones having a mother who's a film editor and a father who's an executive for a multimedia company.
It's unclear how much pull the likes of editors, costumers, and set designers have when it comes to getting their family members work in the industry. However, when you're related to a famous director, things suddenly fall into place much more easily. Directors often collaborate closely with the casting department to ensure actors fulfill their visions, and if they feel like it, they can totally give a loved one a part. It may be a small cameo,...

Dimension Films gathered together a hell of a cast for their 1998 sci-fi horror film Phantoms, including Ben Affleck, Peter O’Toole, Rose McGowan, Joanna Going, Liev Schreiber, Nicky Katt, and Clifton Powell. And yet, even with all that star power, it didn’t turn out to be a very good movie. It has mostly faded into obscurity – but there’s one thing that still keeps it alive. A joke in the 2001 comedy Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, where it was said that “Affleck was the bomb in Phantoms.” That’s a joke Affleck has heard repeated to him many times over the decades, and he referenced it himself when the film was mentioned during a conversation with GQ.
But Affleck didn’t just quote the joke while talking to GQ. He also reminisced about the experience of working on Phantoms. He said, “I was the bomb at Phantoms, everybody knows that.

Though she became known to the world for playing the feisty rebel champion Princess Leia Organa in the "Star Wars" franchise, Carrie Fisher tended to take roles in comedies. Many of her best roles are in comedies, ranging from starring in a sex scene opposite Warren Beatty in "Shampoo" as a teen to playing a middle-aged nun who picks up some stoner hitchhikers in "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back," but in 1988, she starred in a deadly serious Agatha Christie mystery. "Appointment with Death" follows Christie's most famous detective, Hercule Poirot (Peter Ustinov), as he tries to solve the murder of the wealthy Emily Boynton (Piper Laurie) while on holiday in Europe with her family following the death of her husband and some concerns about his will.

Ben Affleck has had a long career in Hollywood, but you won’t see him surrounded by hundreds of friends as he is more interested in keeping a small, tight-knit circle of friends for a reason. While appearing at SXSW to promote The Accountant 2, Affleck reflected on the close relationship he shares with frequent collaborator Matt Damon, who turned up to add his support to the movie’s premiere, and how he really feels that quality of friends is more important than quantity.
There are many stars in Hollywood who often frequent big lavish parties, or are always seen with a whole posse of followers wherever they go. Affleck is not one of them. He doesn’t really care either. Admitting that one of his only friends in his life is Damon, Affleck told Business Insider:
“I’m really lucky to have had a friend in Matt. It's a beautiful thing.

THR reports that Kevin Smith is bringing the View Askewniverse to Archie Comics. The Clerks writer/director is writing a double-sized crossover comic titled Kevin Smith Presents: Archie Meets Jay & Silent Bob.
The comic will be set after the events of Clerks III, which ended with a significant death, but Smith says, “Archie plays a role in the healing” when the iconic character gets a summer job at the Quick Shop and befriends Randal Graves. “Not only is this my stab at a classic American franchise that existed long before me that I read as a kid … It’s a midlife crisis project about death and learning to deal,” Smith explained.
Smith has long been a fan of Archie comics, and he wrote the first draft for the comic just one day after Archie creative executive Jesse Goldwater pitched him the idea. “Kevin has always been one of my creative heroes,...

Before the dawn of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, franchise films used to be made in a far more improvised fashion. Nowadays, we're used to studios and filmmakers having a several-year plan in place for an interlocking series of films and their respective franchises, and while this system can create some very rewarding emotional and narrative payoffs, it doesn't allow for the freedom of spontaneity as much. With this freedom, filmmakers were able to follow their muse to places they previously had never thought of going to, and it's not just characters or moments that were thought up on the fly; in some cases, an entire film came into existence based on a chance encounter.
That's exactly what happened to Kevin Smith during his primary years making films set in his View Askewniverse, named after the View Askew production company he created when he began making movies. Initially, these films were...

On December 31, 2020, film/TV critic David Opie tweeted, "No one is 'born bi,' you watch 'Scooby-Doo' at a formative age and the whole cast turns you bi." The post, featuring photos of the cast of the 2002 "Scooby-Doo" movie, received 19,000 retweets and 135,000 likes, which might seem strange considering that there's nothing about the movie that has anything to do with bisexuality. At least, not on paper.
The vibes, however, are indeed pretty queer. The movie stars Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne, Linda Cardellini as Velma, and Freddie Prinze Jr. as Fred, all of whom are beloved within the queer community for one reason or another. More importantly, "Scooby Doo" as a franchise has always had a strong queer fanbase. Part of that's due to how the cartoon's aesthetics borrowed heavily from the countercultural movement of the '60s and '70s, and partly it's because of how precious a character Velma is.

Jay and Silent Bob movies have seen the iconic stoner duo playing supporting characters as well as leading their own movies, and despite the madcap absurdism, they do have something of a continuity and chronological order. Writer/director Kevin Smith became an indie sensation thanks to his micro-budget debut Clerks in 1994. That was also the movie that introduced the world to Jay, a foul-mouthed, obnoxious, weed-loving punk, and his mostly mute friend Silent Bob. The popularity of these characters would lead to them appearing in several other movies that followed.
Long before the MCU, Smith created his own cinematic universe with the View Askewniverse, with Jay and Silent Bob as the common thread through all the movies. The characters have appeared in cartoon series and even shows and movies outside of Smith's own cinematic universe, but the Jay and Silent Bob movies of the View Askewniverse show the characters' wild...

Kevin Smith has released a never-before-seen, behind-the-scenes video from his breakout film, Clerks. The 1994 comedy follows convenience store employee Dante (Brian OHalloran) and video store worker Randall (Jeff Anderson) as they deal with the minutia of day-to-day convenience store life, as well as coping with the likes of drug dealers Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith). Clerks was a hit with critics and audiences alike, launching Smith's career as a filmmaker, and creating a body of work that has lasted for three decades.
The video, posted to Smiths YouTube channel, starts with a montage of the director slating a series of shots with the clapperboard, followed by a series of outtakes, bloopers, and unused takes. While the legacy of this movie is important context for any modern review, it's also important to remember it as an independent filmmaker's standalone statement during a time of cinematic change. Clerks is equal parts a timeless ode to "bad" jobs and a time capsule of life in the '90s that simply can't be replicated today.

As the controversial Kevin Smith movie celebrates its 25th anniversary, Dogma is getting a re-release.
The View Askewniverse director revealed that his 1999 religious satire is returning to theaters and getting a new home release after another company purchased the distribution rights from Miramax.
“The movie’s been bought away from the guy that had it for years and whatnot,” he said on That Hashtag Show. “The company that bought it, we met with them a couple months ago. They were like, ‘Would you be interested in re-releasing it and touring it like you do with your movies?’ I said, ‘100 percent, are you kidding me? Touring a movie that I know people like, and it’s sentimental and nostalgic? We’ll clean up.'”
Smith continued, “Right now, 2024 is our 25th anniversary, this year. November is when we came out. So, I think 2025 it looks like is when the movement’s going to happen there.

Writer/director Kevin Smith recently revealed the unique condition that Carrie Fisher had to appear in his 2001 comedy, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. While not exactly a sequel to Clerks, the movie is still part of the universe, focusing on the titular drug dealers played by Smith and Jason Mewes. Considering the title is a direct reference to Empire Strikes Back, Princess Leia star Carrie Fisher also had a role, portraying the Nun, who provides the characters with a car ride.

Kevin Smith's newest movie has arrived in theaters, courtesy of Saban Films. Called The 4:30 Movie, the film is a period piece set in the 1980s that follows a group of young friends sneaking viewings of movies at their local theater, much in the way Smith did himself at that age.
In an interview with Kevin Polowy of Cbr, Smith opened up on the development of The 4:30 Movie. He explained how the plot was partly inspired by Smith's real-life adventures of sneaking in screenings of many movies after only paying for one at the very same theater The 4:30 Movie was shot in. Beyond that personal touch, Smith also shared how the movie was reminiscent of his first feature film, Clerks, as the whole idea stemmed from first establishing a location before then coming up with the story.

Kevin Smith shares his thoughts on removing the original dark ending of Clerks. Smith's first film, Clerks, was released in 1994. The movie stars Brian O'Halloran as Dante Hicks and Jeff Anderson as Randal Graves, two best friends who work at Quick Stop Groceries and Rst Video. Clerks was later followed by two sequels and was also the first installment in Smith's View Askewniverse.
While speaking with GQ, Smith talks about being convinced to cut Clerks' original ending. Initially, the film shows a robber coming to Quick Stop and shooting Dante, who then dies. Smith details how Producer's Rep John Pierson told him he needed to remove the ending. Pierson believed the reason Smith killed off the character was because he didn't have a better way to end the movie.

Acclaimed filmmaker Kevin Smith breaks down how a bit part in Scream 3 led him to make Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Smith went over every single movie that he has been a part of, including Scream 3 which, unbeknownst to him at the time, would become one of the biggest moments of his entire career. "So, we were asked by the folks at Miramax, 'Hey man, do you want to pop up in the next Scream movie as Jay and Silent Bob?' And they were like, 'Wes is into it,' meaning Craven," Smith recalled. "And you've got to remember most of the movies I made, all the movies I made, none of them were on a lot. In 2015, writer, director and podcaster Kevin Smith was lucky enough to play a voice in a Star Wars film, but Smith admitted he wasnt sure which stormtrooper he actually voiced. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Smith talked about doing voice work in J.J. Abrams The Force Awakens.

Kevin Smith picks Clerks II as his favorite movie he has ever made. The cult favorite director has been writing and directing since the 1994 indie hit, Clerks. Smith has since gone on to create his own cinematic universe, The View Askewniverse, that connects the majority of his movies. Clerks II picks up 12 years later and finds Dante and Randal getting new jobs at the fast food restaurant, Mooby's, after Randal accidentally burns down The Quick Stop. Throughout his career, Smith has directed 16 movies, including the recently released The 4:30 Movie.
Now, reflecting on his career with Entertainment Weekly, Smith chooses Clerks II as his favorite movie he wrote and directed. Smith notes that Clerks II was intended as a gift to his fans after they supported the original Clerks. He also used the movie as motivation to create his podcast network and touring business, something he is still actively doing nearly 20 years later.

As Hollywood attempts to keep up with the ever-changing face of streaming, Kevin Smith has gotten into the movie theater business.
The director’s latest film is The 4:30 Movie, which serves as a love letter to small-town cinemas. It came at a time when he was feeling “existential” about being “one more goofy-ass tile to this never-ending wall” of film and television content on streaming platforms.

“I meet people who tell you wonderful things about movies you’ve made years ago that other people lambast, and they’re like: ‘That’s my favorite movie.

Princess Leia might be Carrie Fishers most famous role, but shes been in all kinds of incredible projects aside from Star Wars. Whether it was a leading role or a side character, Carrie Fisher always added a pizzazz to any movie she appeared in. Right up until her sudden death in 2016, Fisher was active in the industry. Besides the return of Star Wars, where she returned as Princess Leia for the sequel trilogy, she had many iconic performances that remain memorable today.
Carrie Fisher was born to two parents who already had quite the experience in show business. Fisher tended to be fun-loving and easy going about her choices of roles to play, often poking fun at herself along the way. Thirty years ago, Kevin Smith burst into the world of independent filmmaking in a blaze of glorious serendipity that nobody could replicate if they tried. Self-financed for less than $30,000 and shot entirely in the convenience store where he worked, the original “Clerks” was an electrifying mix of slacker wit and utter absurdism at a time when putting pop culture-obsessed male mediocrity on the big screen felt like a genuinely novel concept. Even after double digit viewings, the film still feels like a pitch-perfect punk rock farce that can make even the most discerning cinephile laugh out loud more than it has any right to.
None of Smith’s subsequent work caught that kind of lightning in a bottle, but quite a few of his early films were close enough to the original high to be watchable. “Mallrats” is a passable ’90s comedy, “Chasing Amy” is a clever character study anchored...

"For you, movies make life make sense." Yes, we're talking to you. And fine, maybe it's also a poignant movie quote from The 4:30 Movie, Kevin Smith's new passion project of a feature that hits the masses this week. Sadly, you won't see the charming New Jersey native on the big screen in this one, though Smith is certainly not done starring in movies. A third Jay & Silent Bob film is in the works, and as the hilarious trailer for The 4:30 Movie suggests, there will "probably" be a Clerks IV down the line, which could certainly feature a Silent Bob cameo. Why not?

Kevin Smith will always hold a special place in my heart as one of the filmmakers who defined my formative years in cinema. "Clerks," "Mallrats," "Chasing Amy," "Dogma," and even the silly "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back" were packed full of hilarious yet immature laughs and pop culture references that tickled my funny bone and my geek gland. Jason Lee's best movies and TV show roles highlight the career of an actor who has been popular in a number of notable projects but whose talents are still sorely underrated. Lee started his career as a professional skateboarder, earning a name for himself as the sport was picking up mainstream popularity in the early 1990s. While that path led to him getting some movie roles, he proved to have a natural talent on screen with a likable charm, strong comedic sense, and an easygoing demeanor.
It didn't take long for Lee to become known more for his acting than his skateboarding, thanks largely to the fact that he was welcomed into Kevin Smith's universe of recurring actors. Marvel Studios never ventured into R-rated territory before the naughty Merc with a Mouth came slicing through the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The comic book movie house kept things PG-13, though they did manage to let their first f-bomb ever into "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3." Of course, all of that relatively clean language that Captain America reluctantly defended in "Avengers: Age of Ultron" gets tossed right out the window with "Deadpool & Wolverine," which drops a plethora of profanity and other vicious vernacular.
Yes, "Deadpool & Wolverine" doesn't shy away from dropping many f-bombs. Apparently the folks at Discussing Film kept a tally, and the magic swear word is unleashed 118 times, bringing the total count of f-bombs in the MCU to 119. That's not a bad number at all, and it's enough to surpass the word's usage in "Deadpool 2," probably because Wolverine is throwing it around quite a bit in this movie too.

Jay and Silent Bob are bringing rudeness and lewdness back to the big screen for a third time, and Kevin Smith has revealed the title for the eagerly-anticipated threequel. The iconic weed-smoking duo, played by Jason Mewes and Smith respectively, first appeared in Smith's debut feature, Clerks. The duo have since reemerged in most of Smith's films, including Mallrats, Chasing Amy, and Dogma. Not content with being sidelined, the pair also starred in two standalone movies, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot.
Appearing at San Diego Comic Con, actor, writer, and director Smith revealed that a third Jay and Silent Bob film is in the works. The new film has been given the official title, Jay and Silent Bob: Store Wars. Smith didn't reveal too much about the movie, which is currently in early development. However, he did tease View Askew fans with a rough outline for the film.

Snoochie Boochies! While Kevin Smith announced last year that a third Jay and Silent Bob movie would be hitting screens, he provided some more details on the threequel this weekend, telling his audience at the San Diego Comic-Con that the movie will officially be titled Store Wars.
While little was revealed, Smith did say that the next movie will find Jay and Silent Bob opening a weed dispensary — presumably in Smith’s home state of New Jersey — and finding some stiff competition with a rival joint.
For the die-hard fans of the View Askewniverse, the confirmation of a third Jay and Silent Bob outing will be just what they need. Writer-director Kevin Smith sure knows how to line them up. While introducing his devoted fans to his upcoming coming-of-age film The 4:30 Movie at the ongoing San Diego Comic-Con, Smith also announced that he will next direct a third installment in the Jay and Silent Bob series. Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Smith popularized the concept of shared universes with his cult classic View Askewniverse movies, which also include the three Clerks films. The third Jay and Silent Bob movie will be titled Jay and Silent Bob: Store Wars, and will find the two characters running a dispensary, and entering a war of sorts with a rival store.

Kevin Smith is well aware of the power of pop culture, so the fact that he is bringing a touch of The Evil Dead to his new Jay & Silent Bob movie is probably not the biggest surprise. While the actor/director/producer/writer has recently completed his new project, The 4:30 Movie, Smith has already announced that his next film will be the return of Jay & Silent Bob in their third titular effort.

Shannen Doherty, known for her roles on the wildly popular series “Beverly Hills, 90210” and on the witchcraft fantasy “Charmed,” has died after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. She was 53.
“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress, Shannen Doherty,” Doherty’s publicist Leslie Sloane said in a statement. “On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease. The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace.”
Doherty rose to fame in 1990 as the fresh-faced brunette Brenda Walsh on Fox’s “Beverly Hills, 90210.” Along with her twin brother Brandon, played by Jason Priestley, the Walshes were the classic fish-out-of-water family that had recently moved from Minnesota to Beverly Hills and were...
