20 DC Superhero Shows That Deserve to be on Max
Image
Max has become a hub for DC fans, but the removal of countless titles has sparked a debate over which missing DC superhero shows deserve to be on the streaming service. As subscribers navigate the platform in search of hidden gems, classic titles, and even bizarre projects worth rediscovering, the absence of a beloved series has been a tough pill to swallow. However, reflecting on live-action and cartoon adaptations alike, DC Comics-inspired shows seem to have been hit hardest, leaving fans wanting a more complete catalog of superhero content.

Debuting as Max in 2020, Max is a subscription-based streaming service from Warner Bros. Discovery. Initially celebrated for hosting an extensive collection of content from brands like Cartoon Network, Crunchyroll, and Sesame Workshop, the platform's offerings have shifted significantly over the years due to changing partnerships and corporate reorganizations. By early 2025, Max experienced one of its largest content purges to date,...

The Correct Order To Watch The DC Animated Universe Shows
Image
Marvel and DC Comics have both cultivated fandom with a shared universe between series. This web of continuity entangles young minds, who come to see the comics not merely as pulp adventures, but gateways to a whole other world whose history they could study and master. Then, superheroes took over 21st century Hollywood by importing this same storytelling model. But the first major superhero cinematic universe debuted on the small screen, not the silver one. Yes, before the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there was the DC Animated Universe (Dcau). A series of interconnected cartoons with overlapping cast and crew, the Dcau ran for 14 years from 1992 to 2006.

That long run would've been impossible without the people who made these cartoons. The first Dcau cartoon, "Batman: The Animated Series," was co-created by Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski. Timm's distinctive art style (like Jack Kirby meets pin-up girl posters) became the Dcau standard.

Every DC Animated Universe Show, Ranked Worst To Best
Image
Batman: The Animated Series set the stage for the successful DC Animated Universe, creating a legacy of its own. The Dcau TV shows, such as Superman: The Animated Series and The New Batman Adventures, defined the franchise and paved the way for other series like Justice League. The Dcau is one of the best interpretations of DC Comics' mythos, from the standalone Batman stories to the epic-scale Justice League adventures.

Every DC Animated Universe show contributed to creating one of the most successful shared universes of all time. Coming off of the success of Batman (1989), Warner Bros. Animation wanted a Batman animated series that would be released alongside Batman Returns (1995). Batman: The Animated Series’ synergy with Burton’s Batman movies worked extremely well, yet the show would soon create its own legacy. Most of the creative team behind Batman: Tas would return for a Superman animated series, followed by...

Night Court and Batman: The Animated Series Star Richard Moll Dies at 80
Image
Veteran actor Richard Moll has passed away.

Per THR, it was reported that Moll died on Thursday at his Big Bear Lake, California home. The actor's death was confirmed by his publicist, though additional information, such as a cause, haven't been revealed. Moll was 80 years old.

Moll was born on Jan. 13, 1943, in Pasadena, California. An imposing figure standing at 6'8", Moll has had very memorable roles. He launched his acting career in the late 1970s, appearing as the religious figure Joseph Smith in the classic film Brigham. He would go on to appear in dozens of films from there on out, which includes playing the Abominable Snowman in Ringo Starr's Caveman; an undead veteran in the hit horror film House; and the Hell House ghost in the horror-comedy Scary Movie 2. Some of his other many film roles include The Sword and the Sorcerer, Night Train to Terror, Sidekicks, The Flintstones,...

James Gunn's DC Universe Needs To Use The DC Animated Universe’s Best Trick
Image
James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Universe should copy a clever storytelling trick that allowed Bruce Timm's DC Animated Universe to handle numerous characters and plot lines at once. Gunn and Safran have ambitious movie and TV show plans for their reboot, as they aim to avoid all the obstacles that kept the Dceu from capitalizing on DC's full potential. DC's vast gallery of characters has everything it takes to star in a cinematic franchise that correctly balances individual stories with a rich interconnected universe.

For that success, the upcoming DC movies and TV shows can learn from animation. Bruce Timm's DC Animated Universe began in 1992 with the widely acclaimed Batman: The Animated Series, followed by Superman: The Animated Series, The New Batman Adventures, Batman Beyond (which inspired a now canceled movie), Static Shock, The Zeta Project, and culminating with Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. What makes...

In Praise Of The Cast Of Belle, And Good Anime Dubbing
Image
"Beauty and the Beast" truly is a tale as old as time, and has been retold in countless ways, like the Ron Perlman and Linda Hamilton TV series of the same name, the Fran Drescher comedy "The Beautician and the Beast," the teen rom-drama "Beastly," or even in an episode of "Hello Kitty's Furry Tale Theater." Recently, legendary Japanese filmmaker Mamoru Hosoda delivered "Belle," a magnificent animated sci-fi fantasy film that thrusts the tale out of the world of old and into the techno future.

The story takes place in the not-so-distant future where the internet has evolved into a legitimate virtual reality called U, where avatars are created by users' scanned biometric information. A teenager named Suzu creates an avatar named Belle who becomes a pop superstar, but everything changes when her virtual concert is interrupted by the seemingly undefeatable fighter The Dragon (or "The Beast"), who she quickly becomes infatuated with.

The Batman & 9 Other Great DC Animated Shows Not Part Of The Dcau
Paul Dano, Colin Farrell, Robert Pattinson, and Zoë Kravitz in The Batman (2022)
Ever since the classic Batman: The Animated Series exploded back in the '90s, DC Comics and Warner Bros have been renowned for their well-written, faithful, and entertaining animated TV shows based on the DC universe. These shows have always been made at an exceptional level of quality and love, and none more so than the Dcau: Batman, Superman, Justice League, Static Shock, The Zeta Project, Batman Beyond, and Justice League Unlimited.

Nevertheless, while many fans just think about the DC Animated Universe when they think of superhero cartoons, there are actually many fantastic animated series featuring DC characters that have nothing to do with the Dcau.

First Trailer For DC Animation's Suicide Squad: Hell To Pay Looks Brilliant
The first trailer for Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay has arrived, and it looks promising. That used to be something you wouldn't have to say about DC Animated Features, but they've been spotty as of late in my personal opinion so all I can say here is the trailer looks pretty damn good. The lineup of heroes is better than the live-action film, Tara Strong is voicing Harley, and the violence doesn't appear to be limited as Quinn just smacked the head off that frozen guy! Let's just hope Vandal Savage is more interesting this time around than he was in Legends of Tomorrow. Christian Slater also stars in the film as Deadshot!

An original story, Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay finds Amanda Waller’s top secret “Task Force X” – Deadshot, Bronze Tiger, Killer Frost, Captain Boomerang, Harley Quinn and Copperhead – on a mission to retrieve a mystical object so...

Review: The Zeta Project
Lost amid the hubbub over the animated series based on the traditional DC Comics was The Zeta Project, a fun spinoff from Warner Animation’s first original creation, Batman Beyond. Thanks to Warner Archives the two season series, spanning 2001-2002, is being released on DVD.

The series is focused on Zeta (Diedrich Bader), formally known as Infiltration Unit Zeta, a synthoid, who works for the Nsa. The machine was introduced in the season two Batman Beyond episode “Zeta,” written by Robert Goodman, who developed the spinoff.

He violates his programming when he is asked to kill an innocent and goes on the run, vowing never to kill again. Of course, the Nsa wants him back and sends a team, led by the clichéd obsessive, Agent James Bennett (the well-cast Kurtwood Smith), convinced Brother’s Day, the terrorists reprogrammed the agency’s machine. He’s often accompanied by the arrogant Agent...

Review: 'Batman Beyond the Complete Series'
I admit to being leery when Warner Animation announced their plans to follow the amazing Batman the Animated Adventures with a next generation hero called Batman Beyond. After all, it was a clear departure from the source material and there was no knowing how this would work.

As it turns out, there was little to fear. The series, which ran from January 1999 through December 2001, honored the past and showed us a future Gotham City that still needed a Dark Knight. Rather than just add wrinkles and gray hair to all the familiar figures, things have changed. Dick Grayson seems to be gone, Alfred and Jim Gordon are dead with Barbara Gordon now the police commissioner. And sitting in the gloom of Wayne Mansion is a still-angry, infirm Bruce Wayne.

He knows there’s work to be done and in time, targets teenager Terry McGuinness as his successor. The youth has...

[DVD Review] Tiny Toon Adventures: Season 1: Volume 2
Like many things in life (and perhaps even more in entertainment), Tiny Toon Adventures can only be fully understood when considered with what came before and after it. For example, how much more irritating were the Ewoks when you realized that they were paving the way for Jar Jar Binks? Can you watch Jack Nicholson’s original interpretation of the Joker without thinking of Heath Ledger’s more recent portrayal? All the same, Tiny Toons can really only be seen in retrospect as the link between the Muppet Babies of the late 1980s and the subsequent, far more engaging Animaniacs, which premiered in 1993. It should be evaluated on its own terms, but it can’t really be thought of or remembered any other way.

Tiny Toon Adventures takes place (for the most part) at Acme Looniversity, where younger counterparts of nearly all of the original Looney Tunes characters learn how...

[DVD Review] The Zeta Project: Season 1
12.00 Normal 0 false false false En-us X-none X-none MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 When I was the Saturday morning cartoon watching age the big attractions were the animated series of Spider-man, X-men and Batman. These were all classics. Of these three I still hold Batman: The Animated Series above for having writing that elevated it from mere children's programming to good, smart entertainment. I still watch the show on DVD to this day. By the time Batman Beyond rolled around I was long gone from the Saturday morning phase and probably saw one or two episodes at most. It was good, but nothing I was willing to plant myself down for on a regular basis.

A few years later I tuned back in to see what kids were watching on Saturday mornings and I came across The Zeta Project. At the time I was turned off by the sappy writing and "fluffy" animation style. The...

Voices on the series included Diedrich Bader, Julie Nathanson, Kurtwood Smith, Dominique Jennings, Eli Marienthal, Scott Marquette, Michael Rosenbaum, and Lauren Tom.

The 2-disc set will come with the 11 first-season episodes (per the studio's "production season"; note that not all online episode guides agree with this count!).

Here's the breakdown of episodes on each disc for the first season set:
