Jim Carrey and Laurie Holden in The Majestic (2001)

The Majestic

One of the Best Jim Carrey Movies on Netflix Earned Him Close to $50M Despite Opting Out of a Salary
Image
In the ‘90s, there was no bigger comedy star than Jim Carrey. While the In Living Color actor was a relative unknown when he was signed on for films like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, the runaway success of the mystery comedy made him a star like no other. In the same year, he delivered two more hits and became the biggest name in Hollywood.

While he lost some of his success with experiments like The Truman Show and Man on the Moon, a good old comedy reportedly brought him back to the top as its box office success netted him a higher payday than a lot of his other films. The actor was reportedly not paid a salary for the 2008 comedy Yes Man, which was consistently in Netflix’s top 10 list in the UK.

Jim Carrey was not paid a salary for Yes Man, but still earned close to $50 million...

Why Jim Carrey Backed Out Of A Poorly Received Episode Of The Simpsons
Image
Most folks agree that "The Simpsons" hasn't been very good for a long time. In recent years, you may have heard that "The Simpsons" is good again or that modern seasons have actually delivered some underrated "Simpsons" episodes. But the reality is that this is a show which has been running for a full 36 seasons at this point, and whatever spin you try to put on it, something went fundamentally awry long ago.

Just when this happened remains a point of debate among fans. There are those that swear "The Simpsons" was only good for a few seasons somewhat early in its run, but most will agree the golden years were somewhere between the third and tenth seasons. Others, this writer included, maintain that the series was good right up until the 12th season, but if this handy chart showing IMDb rankings for each season of "The Simpsons" is anything to go by,...

The Most Obviously Reused Movie Props
Image
Making a movie is hard — not just the metaphorical work of writing a script and performing a character, but literally building the world of the film. And what with the rising costs of CGI, big name movie stars and blackmailers these days, studios trim the budget wherever they can. That often means reusing chunks of other movies, even if they’re instantly recognizable. Like…

5 The Golden Idol From ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’

The “Chachapoyan Fertility Idol” is at the center of one of the most iconic action sequences of all time, so you’d think filmmakers would know it’s a little distracting to see it pop up somewhere Indy could never reach. It’s a fun allusion to Harrison Ford in Solo: A Star Wars Story and Andor, but it’s shown up everywhere from The Majestic to Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams. It’s...

Jim Carrey Could Have Starred In One Of Mel Gibson's Biggest Flops
Image
Jim Carrey's career has taken some interesting turns over the years. After becoming a box-office juggernaut in the mid-1990s with the blazing blockbuster streak of "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective," "The Mask," "Dumb and Dumber," "Batman Forever," and "Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls," he found the ditch with the commercial and critical wipeout of Ben Stiller's darkly comedic curveball "The Cable Guy." The thoughtful actor reestablished his commercial connection with mainstream moviegoers the following year with "Liar Liar," then took another risk with Peter Weir's "The Truman Show." The result was one of the best films of 1998, one that received a curious smattering of Oscar nominations for Weir (Director), Supporting Actor (Ed Harris), and Original Screenplay (Andrew Niccol). That a film as acclaimed and successful as "The Truman Show" could be denied Best Picture and Best Actor nods in a weak year felt like a rebuke of its star.

Beloved Jim Carrey Comedy 'Bruce Almighty' Lands on Netflix at the Perfect Time
Image
Bruce Almighty, one of the most beloved comedies by genre icon Jim Carrey, will start streaming soon on Netflix. Per What’s on Netflix, the platform will add the movie just in time to give you something to laugh about as the holidays come to an end. Starting January 1, Jim Carrey fans will be able to eat leftovers from the holidays while watching one of the actor's best films. Which, franckly, sounds like the perfect plan, and Netflix is making it possible.

In Bruce Almighty, Carrey stars as Bruce Nolan, an ordinary TV reporter who’s trying his best to become a news anchor. When he doesn’t get the gig, Bruce reacts badly, and blames everything on God. To Bruce's surprise, God listens to the accusations (God is played by a perfectly cast Morgan Freeman) that he's not doing his job. Bruce is offered the chance to play God,...

All the Surprises at Jowell & Randy’s Elaborate 3D, Star-Filled Reggaeton Bash
Image
On Saturday night, the famed reggaeton duo Jowell & Randy capped off what was undoubtedly one of the most impressive runs of their career with a historic concert at San Juan’s famous José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum. The acclaimed stars had sold out six dates over the last two weekends, playing their hits for nearly three hours every one of those nights.

The concert series was billed as the first to incorporate 3D technology at El Choli, with staff handing out special glasses to all attendees at the entrance. Once the lights dimmed,...

The Wild, Trashy 2000s Crime Thriller Frank Darabont Was Supposed To Direct
Image
Frank Darabont is credited for directing three of the very best Stephen King adaptations, but between 1994's "The Shawshank Redemption" and 2007's "The Mist," the pulp maestro has rarely had an easy go of it.

If you're wondering what could be so awful about making a movie that constantly flickers around the top spot on the IMDb's ranking of the all-time greatest films, you need to remember that "The Shawshank Redemption" wasn't a runaway success when it hit theaters in the late summer of 1994. Based on a novella from King's celebrated "Different Seasons" collection, the film couldn't be sold as a tale from the "King of Horror," nor could it rely on star power given that Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman were typically viewed as ensemble actors. Its main selling point would be the reviews, and, well, critics didn't initially deliver a chorus of raves.

Things didn't really turn...

Why Did Steve Leave Blue's Clues?
Image
In the late 90s and early 2000s, childrens television programming on Nickelodeon had never been more popular. One show that hooked audiences immediately in 1996 was the now world-renowned Blues Clues. A host welcomes his preschool audience to his home, where his animated puppy, Blue, leaves three blue clues around to help solve the episode's new mystery. The audience is invited to interact and play with the characters, encouraging learning and creating a sense of fun. The first host of the show, and the most notable, was Steve. Played by Steve Burns, the character's green striped shirt, khaki pants and warm, welcoming presence gave children someone to look up to and follow.

Steve was not the only host of Blues Clues, as Donovon Patton would eventually take over the position in 2002. Patton would play Steves brother, Joe, in the episode "Steve Goes to College," becoming the shows new host until the...

The Shawshank Redemption Scene Morgan Freeman Refused To Shoot
Image
Frank Darabont's 1994 prison drama "The Shawshank Redemption," based on a novella by Stephen King, experienced a type of slow success that films don't seem capable of achieving anymore. Released in theaters in late September, "Shawshank" didn't open to huge numbers, and it didn't cause much of a stir in the culture. Reviews were generally quite positive, with many critics praising the film's central performances from Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, and others liking the tenderness of the screenplay. The film currently boasts an 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film was ultimately nominated for seven Academy Awards, but it won zero, crowded out in a year that included "Forrest Gump," "Pulp Fiction," "Quiz Show," and Krzysztof Kieślowski's "Red." It wasn't until "Shawshank" was released on VHS that it began to find an audience. Indeed, audiences grew by leaps and bounds, with some coming to consider it one of...

“I was a struggling actor”: Jim Carrey is Forever Grateful to Clint Eastwood for Giving Him a Shot When The Actor Was a Nobody in Hollywood Before His Ace Ventura Fame
Image
Jim Carrey is known for his comedic roles in films such as The Mask, Liar Liar, and the Ace Ventura series. Popular for his intense physical comedy and loud expressions, Carrey was extremely popular in the early ‘90s and even ventured into dramatic territory with films like The Truman Show and The Majestic.

Before he had his breakthrough with Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, however, he was a stand-up comedian and struggling actor. Carrey credited actor and filmmaker Clint Eastwood for giving him a chance in his Dirty Harry series as a heroin-addicted rockstar named Johnny Squares. He even mentioned how impressed Eastwood was with his audition tape.

Martin Landau movies: 12 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
Martin Landau is the Oscar-winning thespian who enjoyed one of the greatest late career renaissances in cinema history, hitting his stride in his 60’s and remaining active until his death in 2017. Let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.

Born in 1928 in Brooklyn, New York, Landau first came to the attention of movie audiences with a villainous role in Alfred Hitchcock‘s “North by Northwest” (1959). He became a television star playing Rollin Hand on “Mission: Impossible,” for which he received three consecutive Emmy nominations as Best Drama Actor (1967-1968) and a Golden Globe victory in 1968.

After decades of bit roles in B-movies and guest spots on TV (including playing a bad guy on “Columbo”), Landau enjoyed a major career comeback thanks to Francis Ford Coppola‘s “Tucker: The Man and His Dream” (1988), for which he won the Golden Globe and earned his first...

“Took a beer bottle… and pulled the cap off his tooth”: What Jim Carrey Did for ‘Dumb and Dumber’ is Old School Hollywood at its Finest
Image
Jim Carrey is one of the most prolific comic actors in Hollywood. The actor changed the way comedy stars were looked at in the industry by giving solid hits in the ‘90s with films such as Ace Venture: Pet Detective, The Mask, Liar Liar, and more. Though he has done great work in dramas such as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, he is known for his comedic work the most.

Carrey scored a trio of incredible hits including his breakthrough release Ace Ventura. After the success of the comic book adaptation The Mask, Carrey played the role of Lloyd Christmas in the comedy Dumb and Dumber. The actor was so committed to the role of a stupid limo driver that he chipped the cap off of his tooth to give him the iconic look.

“They’ll be crying”: Stephen King Assured The Shawshank Redemption Director After He Was Concerned Over 1 Major Scene in the Movie
Image
The Shawshank Redemption director, Frank Darabont, bought the rights to Stephen King’s Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption for $5000 in 1987. It was technically their second collaboration after Darabont adapted King’s The Woman in the Room into a short film. Interestingly, King did not see the vision of the director with the film, as the author felt that his 96-page novella was not a cinematic work like Carrie or The Shining.

However, King was proved wrong as Darabont created one of the most critically acclaimed movies ever. King did see his vision eventually as he assured the director of one scene in the climax that concerned him.

Greta Gerwig (‘Barbie’) will be 1st to go 3-for-3 in directing Best Picture Oscar nominees
Image
As she strolls comfortably toward multiple Oscar nominations for “Barbie,” Greta Gerwig is on track to set several Academy Awards records tied to her age, gender and the movie’s financial success. In terms of more general achievements, perhaps the most impressive one in her reach is becoming the first filmmaker to have all of her initial three solo features contend for Best Picture. Over the past 95 years, many directors have had shots at earning that distinction and a few have come remarkably close, but none of their chances have been quite as strong as hers.

Since Gerwig did not produce her first two independently-directed films – “Lady Bird” (2017) and “Little Women” (2019) – and, per academy rules, cannot officially share in a “Barbie” Best Picture nomination due to her screen credit of “executive producer” (rather than the qualifying “producer” or “produced by”), she does not and will not soon have any bids...

Why Jim Carrey Turned Down A Role In The Simpsons
Image
The Simpsons has featured numerous guest stars throughout its long run, and Jim Carrey was almost one of them in season 12, but he had to decline due to time constraints. Carrey could have played the singing hobo character in the episode "Simpsons Tall Tales," but Hank Azaria ended up taking on the role instead. "Simpsons Tall Tales" was not well-received and is not considered canon.

The Simpsons has had a number of guest stars since its early seasons, and surprisingly, Jim Carrey had to turn down an appearance in the series. Although The Simpsons has been around for decades, and despite its quality being in decline for years, the series shows no signs of stopping soon, and it continues welcoming all types of guest stars. Springfield has welcomed singers, actors, writers, and even politicians, all of them interacting with the Simpson family in some way and many of them being directly involved in the plot,...

Wtf Happened to The Majestic?
Image
The year was 2001, in the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11, many studios struggled to find the proper way to market and release their films while still being sensitive to what had just happened. Many films were moved off their original release dates to give the studios, and audiences, more time to figure out the proper way forward. One film, however, was deemed a slam dunk: a feel good story about a man who loses his memory and is taken in by the people of a small town when they assume him to be a long lost son and World War II hero, set against the backdrop of the Hollywood Communist witch hunt of the 1950’s from a respected Oscar nominated filmmaker and starring a lead actor who was in the midst of a dramatic left turn in his career with back to back Golden Globe wins for Best Actor.

Why a Video Game Studio Is Banking on a TikTok Star to Introduce a Franchise
Image
The timeline for a successful video game franchise usually goes like this: The game comes out and soon becomes popular among players. Avid fans start creating content inspired by the game and their favorite characters, helping bring that IP into pop culture. There might be a movie or TV adaptation. And as more people are introduced to the game’s world, more fans are created, leading to more demand for derivative content. Et cetera, et cetera.

But the leaders at Liithos, a multimedia gaming studio led by former PlayStation executives, are about to do things a little differently with their first studio IP, Ashfall, which is set in a post-apocalyptic Pacific Northwest ravaged by climate change, civilian fighting and mutations caused by a dark energy. The series follows Ash Naranjo, a character who was born without arms and is given cyborg-like implants to help him save his family and homeland.

After three seasons of scrambling to save the world, The Umbrella Academy has the opportunity to reinvent itself in season 4 by giving its characters new and different powers. Based on the Dark Horse Comics of the same name, Netflix's The Umbrella Academy season 4 is set to solve some of its biggest mysteries and give the characters another shot at mending their dysfunctional relationships. However, season 4's setup will make the superheroes of the academy squirm a little differently than before.

The Umbrella Academy season 3 ends with another apocalypse avoided and all current members of the academy alive. In fact, there is one more Umbrella alive at the end of season 3 than was alive at the end of season 2. The catch, though, is that all of them have lost their powers. The Shawshank Redemption Made The Green Mile A Risky Move For Frank Darabont
Image
Frank Darabont created a heckuva conundrum for himself when his feature directing debut, "The Shawshank Redemption," wound up becoming one of the most beloved movies of all time. For starters, he joined an elite fraternity of filmmakers who'd hit the bullseye with a difficult-to-adapt Stephen King story. More troublesome, King had just launched into another prison yarn, one that begged to become a motion picture. One that fit Darabont like a bespoke suit.

"The Green Mile" was a publishing event in 1996. Between March and August, King released a new, slender volume imparting the tragedy of John Coffey, a gentle giant wrongfully consigned to Death Row for the rape and murder of two girls. Unlike "The Shawshank Redemption," this serialized story contained the kind of mystical elements one expects from a King novel. Coffey is not only the opposite of a killer, he is a saint possessed of healing powers. King...

The Truman Show Almost Had A Very Different Star And Director
Image
That Peter Weir's 1998 film "The Truman Show" managed to claim as many accolades as it did was kind of extraordinary. It was nominated for three Academy Awards -- Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Screenplay -- and won numerous other awards from various other critical bodies. Part comedy, part high-concept sci-fi film, "The Truman Show" followed the everyday life of the good-natured everyman Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey) as he treks to and from work, makes small talk with his neighbors, and enjoys evenings with his wife Meryl (Laura Linney).

Unbeknownst to Truman, however, he is the lone subject of an elaborate, lifetime-long unscripted TV show watched by billions the world over. His hometown is completely enclosed in an enormous dome, and all the people he has interacted with for his entire life are being fed lines and scenes by the show's all-seeing director Christof (Ed Harris).

Truman, now an adult,...

Jim Carrey and Laurie Holden in The Majestic (2001)
Cannes 2021: who will win the Palme d’Or – and who should
Jim Carrey and Laurie Holden in The Majestic (2001)
As a very strange edition of the festival draws to a close, our film critic predicts who will walk away with the Palme d’Or and other prizes – and awards his own alternative Braddies

So it actually happened – the Cannes film festival defiantly took place in the era of Covid, and two months later than usual, in sweltering July. More tourists, but fewer actual festival-attenders from the media. Some streets were eerily quiet and the legendary bar, Le Petit Majestic, usually packed with movie-world people, getting drunk, exchanging cards and crowding densely out into the street every night until three in the morning, was doing hardly any business.

Masks were worn throughout all films, though not on the hallowed red carpet, and every 48 hours we had to report to a special tent for Covid testing: it was not possible to enter the Palais without having the vital Qr code for “Negatif” on your phone.

Hal Holbrook, the veteran actor known for playing Mark Twain for decades among dozens of other movie, TV, and stage roles, has sadly passed away. Though word of his death is just making it to the media, Holbrook's personal assistant, Joyce Cohen, revealed on Monday that the actor died at his home in Beverly Hills, California, on Jan. 23. An exact cause of death wasn't named. Holbrook was 95 years old.

Hal Holbrook might be best known for portraying Mark Twain over the course of six decades. He first started portraying Mark in the late 1940s in a show for school groups. He later turned the act into the one-man show, Mark Twain Tonight!, in the 1950s. His take on Twain went mainstream when he made an appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1956, and in 1967, he brought back Mark Twain Tonight! for a special on CBS. After winning a Tony award for the stage version,...

Jim Carrey and Laurie Holden in The Majestic (2001)
The General Assembly of Ficav in Times of the Covid-19 Epidemic
Jim Carrey and Laurie Holden in The Majestic (2001)
The General Assembly of the Vesoul International Festival of Asian Cinemas was held at the Ficav house on Friday, October 16, 2020 in the evening, in the strictest respect for health recommendations in times of the covid-19 pandemic.

After approval of the moral report and balance sheet by members of Ficav, it was debated whether to keep the implementation of the 27 th Ficav from 26 January to 2 February 2021 .

Analysis and Reflection:

On February 18, 2020, the 26 th Ficav closed. The virus was already there and had prevented us from welcoming our Chinese guests. But the festival could proceed normally, with nearly 33,000 spectators.

On March 17, life stopped in France for several weeks.

The pandemic was here. The summer lull gave us hope, but the fall disappointed us

However, the good progress, in September-October, of film festivals such as Deauville, La Roche-sur-Yon, Saint-Jean de Luz, Bordeaux, the Cinémed de Montpellier and the Festival Lumière de Lyon, were...

Ace Ventura détective (1995)
Jim Carrey's 20 best film performances – ranked!
Ace Ventura détective (1995)
The rubber-faced funnyman made Ace Ventura, The Mask and Dumb and Dumber in the same year. But as he prepares to publish his memoirs, we ask: was that as good as it got?

By and large, Jim Carrey either makes good films or very, very bad films. The latter includes mush such as The Majestic, comedic misfires such as The Incredible Burt Wonderstone and such dreary genre misfires as Dark Crimes. But it also includes The Number 23, a thriller in which Carrey becomes obsessed with a book that he forgot he wrote, about the number 23. The book was written by a man named Topsy Kretts. Say it out loud. That’s right: it sounds like “Top Secrets”. The Number 23 is a terrible film, but you can watch the heck out of it drunk.

The B-Side – Jim Carrey
Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars and not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between.

Today we talk about some serious movies from iconic funny guy Jim Carrey, star of the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog. After making his bones on In Living Color, the elastic performer had what is arguably the greatest movie star year ever. With The Mask, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Dumb and Dumber all coming out in 1994 to various degrees of large success, Carrey was a household name. We talk about what happened after. Joining the podcast is Evan Cutler Wattles, a filmmaker in New York City who runs the impressive production company Silentface.

Our movies include the 2001 Frank Darabont flop The Majestic, the 2005 remake Fun With Dick And Jane, the 2007 thriller The Number 23 and, finally, the based-on-a-true-crime drama Dark Crimes.

Shining (1980)
Jim Carrey Becomes Jack Nicholson in Unsettling The Shining Deepfake Video
Shining (1980)
Jimmy Carrey becomes Jack Torrance in a new deepfake video pulled from The Shining. And it's no laughing matter. Carrey was known early on in his career for doing his Jack Nicholson impression. It's a funny bit, perfected over the years. And many have wondered what it would be like if this version of Jack replaced the real thing. No we get to see what that looks like, and it's as far removed from being funny as anything can be.

Jimmy Carrey's face has replaced Jack Nicholson via deepfake technology, and it's unnerving to say the least. You can still see bits of Jack peeking through, and we hear the actor's real voice coming out of Jim Carrey's mouth. More than anything, it's creepy. And it brings a chilling new look at an iconic scene from one of the greatest horror movies of all time.

Here, we see Jack Torrance typing away,...

Jim Carrey at an event for L'incroyable Burt Wonderstone (2013)
In the world of sad clowns, there are the ones who hide how much they’re crying on the inside, because they want to give the people what they want. And then there are the ones who let their inner darkness out as early and often as possible.

Jim Carrey belongs to the latter group. He rose to TV fame playing comic grotesques like burn victim Fire Marshal Bill and steroid abuser Vera de Miloon on In Living Color, then became a movie sensation with the 1994 trifecta of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective,...

Guilty by Suspicion
Movies about the blacklist aren’t common, probably because as Robert Vaughn wrote, the period produced no happy stories, ‘Only Victims.’ Robert de Niro, Annette Bening and George Wendt give a bite of immediacy to the way the blacklist upset careers and blighted lives. Few of us would like to be publicly branded an Enemy of the People, but doing so seems to be America’s number one spectator sport.
