    Hip Action

Bobby Jones instructs Harold Goodwin and Guy Kibbee on how to use the irons when teeing off.

Of course nowadays they use the woods, or perhaps one of those composite materials, but this movie was made more than 90 years ago. And although I have no great interest in golf, it's good cinema when Jones sends the balls whizzing right past the camera.... and into it.

How I Play Golf, by Bobby Jones #6: The Big Irons (1931)

    ** 1/2 (out of 4)

A man decides to sneak out to the golf course to get a lesson with Bobby Jones but what he doesn't know is that his boss (Guy Kibbee) is also there. As the title correctly points out, this sixth entry has Jones explaining the best way to use irons and when it's the right time for them. As with most films in the series, this here has something for film buffs as well as something for golf buffs so both sides should be entertained. The film buffs are going to enjoy seeing Kibbee, Harold Goodwin and Alan Mowbray as golfers and we actually get a couple good laughs from them. Kibbee is the stand out as he plays a rather bad golfer who fakes a health issue so that he can take his clubs out. The lesson by Jones takes the main focus and there are a couple great scenes here. Had there been 3-D back in the day then this here might have been the greatest film for it. There are some shots that Jones hits right towards the camera that will actually make you jump back. Even more amazing is the audio recording of the sound of the balls going by the camera. One particular shot, according to the IMDb trivia, hits the camera lens dead on and apparently this was Jones' first attempt.

    • Trivia
Bobby Jones probably has the highlight shot of the entire series on this episode as he blasts his iron shot directly into the camera with a subsequent super close-up of the ball. According to a newspaper account by his biographer O. B. Keeler, his 2 iron shot was fired right into the center of the four inch square opening of the camera's lens hood. The camera was stationed 50 feet away from Bobby and about 7 feet off the ground. The cameraman and sound crew were equipped with padded outfits as was the camera. He damaged the lens hood on his very first shot, although the scene was later edited to show him hitting the camera after a few shots.
