When you think of Bollywood films, generally something along the lines of romances, actions or dramas tend to come up. Horror has been and still is an extremely underrated genre in Indian cinema, and it has only been pushed into mainstream media during the '90s. The turning point for Indian horror cinema is marked by the release of Raat in 1992. Indian director Ram Gopal Varma is known for shirking off the conventions of Bollywood cinema, most notably by avoiding musical numbers in his films, so it should come as little surprise that he would dabble in this ostracized genre. Critics absolutely raved at Raat's premiere, unnerved by the atmospheric build-up throughout the film and shocked by the schlocky finale. However, the public was still on the fence about the genre, and would only come around to horror once Varma released his later movie, Bhoot, in 2003, which was a more...

My first thoughts on watching the new Indonesian film Primbon are that it is one of the better horror movies to have come out recently, but the caveat to that is that it has a rather regressive stance regarding the supernatural; the climax is not befitting of the great buildup. That being said, Primbon is actually a good example of how to have the right kind of exposition to set up a horror film. Horror requires some kind of deep dive into the unknown and the mythological legends of a place. The traditional population’s belief in the stories of the old sparks an interest, and one can build up the scenes from the inherent myths in the culture. Director Rudy Soedjarwo does not focus too much on explaining what Primbon is; we get to find out about it organically, almost simultaneously with the characters. That’s the best way...

Actor Vardhan Puri, who is awaiting the release of his horror film ‘Aseq’, has something to tell: his spine-chilling experience when he was attacked by a six and half feet tall unclothed lady in his hotel room.
Vardhan is the grandson of the late actor Amrish Puri, and will be soon seen in ‘Aseq’ which will drop on Ott.
Walking down the memory lane, Vardhan said: “I got attacked by a six and half feet tall unclothed lady in my hotel room early in the morning one day and I had to defend myself somehow before she tried to strangle me. After the experience, I could not be sure if the lady was a human being. It was extremely traumatic to say the least and a lot of people from the unit witnessed the madness. I still suffer from Ptsd (post traumatic stress disorder).”

The controversial reality Bigg Boss 14 is running high on drama these days. From the 'nepotism' controversy involving singer Kumar Sanu's son Jaan Kumar Sanu and Rahul Vaidya to the latest captaincy task, the contestants have been running the show on many accusations, threats, tears and abuses for each other.
In the latest episode, when contestants were fighting hard to become the next captain of the house, a fight between Jasmin Bhasin and Rahul Vaidya turned ugly. The Red Zone contestant Rahul was supposed to snatch the bag from the Green zone's Jasmin in order to take away her opportunity to become the captain. In the process, the two locked horns and Jasmin accused the singer of using 'physical force' on her.
Jasmin refused to leave her bag even after Rahul warned her several times before pulling the bag away from her that she might get hurt in the process.

Bigg Boss 14 is around the corner, and production designer Omung Kumar has opened up on how he revamped the set for the new season amid the pandemic.
"It was not easy for us to redesign 'Bigg Boss' house at a time when everything was shut due to lockdown. There was a limited number of labourers available. Most of them had gone to their villages. The shops were closed. Online delivery was not functioning. We could not import anything from abroad," Omung recalled, while interacting with Ians.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Sanam? As a Bollywood music lover, I think of none other than India’s Fantastic Four who have clocked a whopping 2.7 million subscribers (and counting!) at their YouTube channel, thanks to their wonderful renditions of retro classic hits, modern hits and original compositions.
The fantastic four comprise of brothers Sanam Puri (lead vocals) and Samar Puri (lead guitar), Venky S (bass guitar) and Keshav Dhanraj (drums). I would say they are India’s most commercially successful band, and they have enthralled audiences in various concerts both internationally and in India. As a band, Sanam have also succeeded in bridging the gap between the younger and older generations, through their retro renditions.
I have been fortunate enough to have a chat with the band, to gauge their thoughts on current music trends, whose music they like listening to, and much more!

Saturday’s episode of The Voice India, opened with a quick re-cap of the first two weeks of the show and a precap of this weekends show. The focus then shifted to the coaches who gave a comic breaking news update that coach Sunidhi had coach Mika’s sunglasses! I really do love watching the hilarious comic moments between the Fabulous Four!
The first contestant to perform of week three, was Snigdhajit Bhowmik who is 25 years old from Kolkata, West Bengal. Snighdajit performed ‘Dhan Te Nan’ from Kaminey. Coach Mika was the first to hit the buzzer followed by coaches Shaan, Sunidhi and Hr. All four coaches praised Snighdajit’s performance and then started their comic requests for him to join their team. Coach Hr even sang a popular Bengali phrase as Snighdajit is Bengali! After much cajoling, Snighdajit chose to be in team Shaan.
The second contestant was Garima Khiste.

Talat Mehmood, the unparallel king of ghazal needs no introduction. His super hit ghazals like Sham-E-Gham Ki Qassam ....; Jalte Hain Jiske Liye .... Aye Mere Dil Kahin Aur Chal.... are immortal and shall continue to regale ghazal lovers for centuries to come.
However, readers would be stunned to know that though Talat Mehmood, who ruled the mid-40s and the 50s as the most sought after playback singer, had to face bitter competition in the 60s from emerging new talents like Mohammad Rafi, Mukesh, Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey, Mahendra Kapoor etc.
In fact, his popularity plunged so low that film distributers declined to accept his songs and music directors had to tragically re-record the song in other singers' voice. For instance, in Dilip Kumar's movie Aadmi, music maestro Naushad had recorded a duet on Dilip Kumar and Manoj Kumar.

Ram Gopal Varma has given the Bollywood industry some big films over the years. He has directed, written and produced films across multiple genres – psychological thrillers, underworld warfare, fiction, politics-nexus and experimental films in various languages. His horror films have also been quite a revelation as he has introduced some path-breaking horror films in Indian Cinema.
Right from the year 1992, when Raat was released, which is still considered one of the best horror films made in Bollywood; Rgv has never let his audiences down with this genre.
In 2003 again, Ajay Devgn and Urmila Matondkar’s Bhoot was a hit. Both of them won awards for their outstanding performances. There is no denial in the fact that Ram Gopal Varma has given a list of horror films and recreated the genre with his creativity and visualization.
His other note worthy films in this genre includes Vaastu Shastra (2004), Phoonk (2008) and Darna Mana Hai (2003) among many more.

Let’s face it, 2011 hasn’t been Bollywood’s best year, and there’s much that can be done to make sure 2012 is better. Let’s take a look at what should be the industry’s top fifteen resolutions for the New Year.
1. Use “Hinglish” titles only when appropriate!
I wonder if it’s even fair to label Bombay’s film industry the “Hindi” film industry, because I’d say at least 50% of film titles in 2011 have been in English. Sometimes using English in a title works (i.e. The Dirty Picture, Tanu Weds Manu), but these Hinglish (many times, simply English) titles often elicit a “Wtf.” Titles like Always Kabhi Kabhi, Luv Ka The End and Love U Mr. Kalakaar are unintentionally hilarious (read: stupid) while generic English titles like Game and Ready are just plain lazy. A title is one of a film’s first selling points and...

From reincarnations to haunted mansions. From vindictive oatmeal faced corpses to shape shifting nagins, Bollywood has bravely offered a plethora of films in the name of horror over the years. He broke all the rules of stardom and yet was a star, a romantic hero and an all-rounder par excellence. 47 was no age for one of Hindi cinema's brightest talents to go, but on November 6, 1985, Sanjeev Kumar passed away, leaving fans, friends and the Hindi film shell-shocked. Gulzar remembers Sanjeev Kumar "For me, he was the complete actor. I have always said that I had two anchors - one was Sanjeev Kumar, and the other was R.D.Burman. What most people do not know is that I knew Haribhai (as I called him) from the late 1950s. We were both with the Indian National Theatre where I would write for the plays and he was a stage actor. Sanjeev was a student of P.D.Shenoy, who was also teaching at the Filmalaya School of Acting and later turned film director. Sanjeev was just over 20 years old, and he was playing a father!
