Interview With Park Jengil: For Every Japanese Person Who Does Not Like Koreans, There Is Also One Who Accepts and Respects Us
Image
At their core, director Park Jengil‘s works are about minorities, their lives and their struggles. However, rather than showing only the negative side which we have already seen many times, Park also highlights the community, the family bonds and their connection to the country they live in. His short feature “Muito Prazer” already was something of a departure from how these topics have been treated in many movies, but his feature debut “Poems of Flower Rain” is something different entirely, focusing on the lives of Zainichi Koreans.

In our interview with Park Jengil we talk about the inspiration for the feature, the meaning of the title and the importance of food.

I have to say I got a little hungry watching your film because the characters are eating so many delicious meals and snacks. What would be your favorite food from “Poems of Flower Rain” if you had to pick one?...

Joker 2 Cinematographer Says the Movie Is a ‘Big Swing'
Image
The sequel to "Joker" is close to finishing post-production and is expected to be a big surprise for viewers, with a different approach and new elements. Lady Gaga's portrayal of Harley Quinn and the movie's musical format have generated a lot of anticipation among fans. "Joker: Folie à Deux" has a chance to be the biggest superhero release of 2024, as many other anticipated titles have been delayed due to strikes and production issues.

DC sequel Joker: Folie á Deux could be one of the big surprises of 2024. While many of the most anticipated blockbusters of next year could delay their releases, or have already done so due to the strikes in Hollywood, the Joker sequel is close to finishing its post-production, as revealed by its cinematographer. Surely neither director Todd Phillips nor Joaquin Phoenix, nor even Batman fans imagined that Joker would be such a big success. The 2018 film...

10 Awesome Fatalities Mortal Kombat 2 Needs To Include
Image
Mortal Kombat 2 needs to include fans' favorite fatalities from the video games to capitalize on the franchise's revitalization and maintain momentum. Specific iconic fatality moves, such as Cassie Cage's Selfie Fatality and Sindel's Scream Queen Fatality, would make for great inclusions in the movie and showcase the characters' power. Including classic moves like Liu Kang's Arcade Drop Fatality and Sub Zero's Spine Rip Fatality would pay homage to the original games and provide epic moments in the film.

The upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 has a plethora of fatalities from the games to choose from, but it must include certain fatalities that didn't appear in the first movie. Mortal Kombat achieved mixed reviews when it was released in 2021, but this version of the film is the most successful to date. The first movie version of Mortal Kombat came out in 1995, but only one more film was made after that,...

All Rise (2019)
All Rise Season 3 Episode 10 Review: Fire and Rain
All Rise (2019)
Brandon nation turned things upside down.

Brandon Page thought he controlled the city, and on All Rise Season 3 Episode 10, his followers controlled the courthouse, leaving two lives in balance.

The Smash and Grab case proved how dangerous social media is when used for cult purposes.

The overwhelming chaos on All Rise Season 3 Episode 9 caught up to Teddy and Mark when Teddy wrote the wrong Hernandez sister's name on the search warrant.

The Feds and Da Bravo breathing down his neck made Mark's job even more demanding. He needed to prove to Lola she made the right choice giving him the case.

Mark took the heat for the mistake, never incriminating Teddy. However, when Teddy offered to resign, Mark wouldn't let him and ordered him to find more evidence proving that Brandon was guilty.

Poor Teddy was so nervous. He hated having Mark mad at him. He and Sara...

Complete Buffy reviews: Welcome to the Hellmouth / The Harvest
[Note about spoilers: As with the Complete Doctor Who Reviews, the individual (and two-parter) episode reviews form part of an overview of the show as a whole, and as such, contain spoilers for events not only in the episodes in question, but also potentially those in future episodes and seasons. There may also be spoilers for the Buffy spin-off show Angel.]

Welcome to another set of complete reviews in which I attempt to prattle on about two of the most famous Joss Whedon creations: Buffy The Vampire Slayer (1997-2003) and Angel (1999-2004).

On the surface of it, a TV series franchise stemming from a so-so movie about a teenage girl who stakes vampires doesn't inspire much confidence. In 1992, the film, Buffy The Vampire Slayer pitted Kristy Swanson as the eponymous heroine against a mean old vampire king called Lothos and his motley crew of blood-sucking fiends. The movie didn't exactly set the world ablaze, staked by lukewarm reviews and moderate box office takings.

Writer Joss Whedon was nothing if not persistent though. Translating the original concept to the small screen was something of a gamble, given the tepid reactions to the preceding film. How could it possibly work?

And yet, sixteen years later, Buffy is still a huge phenomenon. Seven seasons were produced.

Having a baby of her own has always been a dream of Drew’s – but being a new mom definitely comes with highs and lows. “You have the highest highs and yet you’re facing the biggest fear of, ‘How do I keep someone alive?’” she tells the mag. 'Degrassi' Recap: "Sabotage, Part 2"
You should probably help Degrassi win the Best High School Show Ever Competition. You should probably do that.

Previously on Degrassi, Clare's No Good Very Bad Totally Horrible Life was—you guessed it—no good, very bad, and pretty damn totally horrible. She's out kissing losers and getting wasted and insulting everyone within earshot, so you can guess that this is all about to crash and burn worse than a hearse. Part Two!

Eli is getting really excited about throwing a surprise 17th birthday party when Fiona Coyne has what's probably the best Degrassi line of Season 12: Fiona doesn't even know Clare, why in the frozen turkey hell would she throw a party for her? Eli says that he'll pay her to do it and that shuts Fiona up. Alli feels like this is the perfect time to remind Eli about the time Asher Shostak smushed his girlfriend, except...

2011 Sydney Underground Film Festival: Official Lineup
For their 5th annual event, which is set to run Sept. 8-11, the Sydney Underground Film Festival is looking a little more demented than ever. And that’s saying a lot for this scrappy, still relatively young fest, which typically offers ample twisted cinematic offerings.

The fun kicks off with the Opening Night film, the demented superhero comedy Super, written and directed by former Troma go-to screenwriter James Gunn (Tromeo & Juliet); then ends with the Closing Night wallowing in Sydney’s seedy underbelly, X, by homegrown filmmaker Jon Hewitt.

Crammed between these two excursions into violence and depravity is a lineup filled with perverse visions, scandalous public figures, sickening horror, experimental pop culture remixes and more.

For Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film, the highlight of the fest is Usama Alshaibi‘s Profane, a complex psychological, psychosexual, spiritual morality play about a Muslim sex worker who endures a “reverse...

Whatever Happened To Michael Moriarty?
Normal 0 false false false En-us X-none X-none

By Harvey F. Chartrand

Michael Moriarty, who starred in such classic films as Who’ll Stop the Rain and Pale Rider, exiled himself to Canada in 1995, following a nasty confrontation with U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno in a Washington, D.C. hotel room. Moriarty was invited along with network television executives and producers to hear Reno’s views on censorship of TV violence. Law and Order, one of the least violent shows on television, was cited as a major offender. Incensed by Reno's campaign to “forcibly end violence on television and trample on rights of free expression as guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution,” Moriarty quit the series and left the U.S. in protest. He has been a landed immigrant in Canada ever since. Why the fateful encounter with Reno led to a radical (and seemingly overnight) transformation of Moriarty’s...

Lionel Richie, Ryan Seacrest, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan in American Idol: The Search for a Superstar (2002)
American Idol Recap: Rock and Role-Playing
Lionel Richie, Ryan Seacrest, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan in American Idol: The Search for a Superstar (2002)
There was magic in the air Wednesday night at American Idol. The judges waved their hyperbole-filled wands and turned “good/decent/atrocious” into “amazing,” “revolutionary,” and “perfect in every way.” Nigel Lythgoe reached into his hat and pulled out a gaggle of screaming groupies for Scotty McCreery. And Gwen Stefani used some dark-sided voodoo (aka her L.A.M.B. “fashion” line) to transform the gorgeous Pia Toscano into a bowl of lumpy mashed potatoes.

But let’s not dwell on the judges; if they’re determined to be the beige eggshell paint of season 10, then by all means, they can fade into the background!

Melrose Place Review: "Mulholland"
Melrose Place rarely disappoints because it knows what it is (especially now that Ashlee Simpson is gone): Intrigue below the surface, sexiness, scandal and over-the-top drama.

For the most part, "Mulholland" was a success, albeit a bit slow. Which wasn't so bad, necessarily, for an episode built almost exclusively around relationships. Here's Tvf's review:

Amanda is still poking around for her hidden treasure when she walks into David's apartment and starts checking out the art on his walls. She's interested in his "Sydney Original."

Unfortunately for her, even after some elaborate thievery of her own, it wasn't what she was after. Meanwhile, Riley's business trip to D.C. ends with her kissing her boss Ben.

Not awkward at all. They try to act casual about it. Until Ben decides he's bored with Amanda, then tells Riley he wants her instead. Wow, that was prompt and totally realistic!

Naturally, Amanda...
