A few years back the pioneering disc boutique Mondo Macabro imported a number of exotic Eastern horror films, such as Purana Mandir from India. The movies seemed a real cultural curiosity, an imitation of our genre filmmaking with local touches added. Phil Hardy’s Encyclopedia of Horror reference book whetted my appetite for scores of amazing-sounding foreign horror pictures, that I thought I’d never see. Many have been made available in the digital age, although not always in this Region. A friend loaned me this exotic picture,...

Bollywood Dabbles in Fright Night Country with Neighbours
The headline pretty much says it all, no? Still, we have a trailer and more for Shyam Ramsay's latest flick, Neighbours. Check it out, and marvel at the fact that it isn't home to zany impromptu dance numbers.

Neighbours is the latest horror film directed by Shyam Ramsay. It is the first attempt at vampires by Bollywood. It is a typical Ramsay-styled cinema that has stood the test of time and will bring back memories of a happy childhood watching horror films such as Veerana, Purani Haveli, Purana Mandir, Bandh Darwaza, etc.

Happy Bollywood Halloween!
There is nothing better on Halloween than watching a scary film. It gets even better if it is a spooky, bone chilling, terrifying Bollywood film. With the spine tingling themes of haunted abandoned havelis (mansions), reincarnation, revenge of the dead and wandering lost spirits – who said that Bollywood only told romantic tales?

In a Cult of their own (Part – I)
Films that gained a ‘cult following’ over the years, despite being unnoticed on release

Back in the 80s, all we had was Doordarshan. Anything you wanted to know about cinema, mythology, world literature, astronomy, science fiction, history; it was all there – right in your living room. By the third time I caught her on TV, she had won a Booker Prize for fiction, for her book The God of Small Things. She was Arundhati Roy – the above-mentioned films were made by her then husband, Pradip Krishen. But we’re more interested in the second film – In Which Annie… was about a group of students in an Architecture College in Delhi,...
