This Forgotten George A. Romero Cult Classic Horror Is Getting a 4K Uhd Release
Image
If you thought that the only deadly simian that you would see on your screen this year was Osgood Perkins' adaptation of Stephen King's The Monkey, you thought wrong. Next month, a cult-classic movie by horror master George A. Romero (Night of the LivingDead) is getting the 4K Uhd treatment: Monkey Shines. The 1988 movie is often overshadowed by Romero's more famous movies, but this one earned a small cult status after an initial lukewarm reception. The special 2-disc edition will be released on June 3.

Monkey Shines tells the story of Allan (Jason Beghe), a man who suffers a terrible accident that makes him quadriplegic. After that, he is given a service monkey appointed to help him with daily tasks. The problem is that the adorable Ella suddenly starts to develop a fiercely aggressive behavior, putting the lives of several people at risk.

The horror movie was written by Romero himself,...

Ellen Pompeo's First Leading Show Since Grey's Anatomy Debuts With Underwhelming Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Ellen Pompeo's first leading role in a television series since Grey's Anatomy debuts with an underwhelming Rotten Tomatoes score. Pompeo made her first on-screen appearance in an episode of NBC's legal drama Law & Order before guest-starring in various television series, including the comedy Strangers with Candy, the medical drama Strong Medicine, and the iconic sitcom Friends. Though her film career has struggled to take off, her overall career took a significant turn in 2002 when she garnered attention for her performance in the romantic drama Moonlight Mile.

In 2005, Pompeo was cast as the titular Dr. Meredith Grey in ABC's medical drama, Grey's Anatomy, following her journey from a surgical intern to a fully certified doctor and eventually the hospital's chief of general surgery. The character became immensely popular, establishing Pompeo as one of television's most acclaimed and highest-paid actresses. By Grey's Anatomy season 19, Pompeo stepped back as a series regular,...

Mary J. Blige on Why Monet and ‘Power Book II: Ghost’ Are Personal Therapy
Image
Mary J. Blige remembers the first time she got positive feedback for her acting. “When I was 7, I did a Christmas play in school, and the word from the other students and teachers was that me and this guy who was also in the play did very, very, very well,” she says. “It put something in me like, ‘Okay maybe I can really do this,’ and I always wanted to act [after] getting that feedback. At some point, I kind of left it alone and got into the music business.”

Choosing the music business early in her career has more than worked out for Blige. To date, the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul has sold over 100 million albums worldwide, won nine Grammys and is set to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in October. And she’s not stopping. She just released “Breathing” with rapper Fabolous, the lead...

Quarantine Viewing: Nostalgia TV and Alt Streaming Options Can Keep You Entertained!!
Julia Stiles
The coronavirus couldn't have come at a worse time for currently airing broadcast television hoping to end their full seasons.

Heck, it's not good for upcoming series or pilots under consideration, either.

While it's possible bubble shows might get a second life so their already carved path continues and viewers can snuggle in with what's already comfortable, if production stoppage goes on for a long time, seasons might not end at all and fall TV could get delayed until January 2021.

But amidst all of the chaos, there are silver linings.

We talk about the glut of great programming all the time and how impossible it is to watch what you want. What better time to check out alternatives than when all of your time is spent indoors?

Two streaming networks that I believe are highly valuable have extended their normal seven-day free trial to 30 days. With that much time with each entity,...

Jennifer Aniston and the Rise of Actor-Producers
Jennifer Aniston
When Jennifer Aniston won a SAG Award Jan. 19, the mainstream media seized on one fact: She and her ex Brad Pitt were together in the winner’s circle. Woo-woo, hot stuff!

For gossip rags, that’s fun, but this angle misses the bigger picture. First, her award for “The Morning Show” was a nice validation for Apple TV Plus. Second, this was a project on which she and Reese Witherspoon are exec producers, meaning actor-producers have moved beyond the realm of “vanity productions,” as such deals used to be called for performers.

The 21st century has seen a sharp rise in actors with successful production companies. That list includes Sandra Bullock, Viola Davis, Jennifer Lopez, Salma Hayek, Eva Longoria and Nicole Kidman.

Though 2019 Oscar nominations inspired protests for lack of gender diversity among directors, the tallies in the best picture rank are better — not 50-50 yet, but getting there. Eight...

Rest in peace, Charlotte Rae. The beloved Facts of Life and Diff’Rent Strokes star sadly died at age 92 in her La home on Sunday, Aug. 5, her rep confirmed to Entertainment Weekly. Charlotte had previously revealed that she had been diagnosed with bone cancer in April 2017. "Last Monday, I found out I have bone cancer. About seven years ago, I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer — which is a miracle that they found it because usually, it’s too late. My mother, sister, and my uncle died of pancreatic cancer," the actress told People at the time. (Photo Credit: Getty Images) "After six months of chemotherapy, I was cancer-free. I lost my hair, but I had beautiful wigs. Nobody ever knew. So now, at the age of 91, I have to make up my mind. I’m not in any pain right now. I’m feeling so terrific and so glad to be above ground.

Jane Fonda at an event for U (2006)
Top 6 women who deserve Emmy nominations: Justina Machado, Jenifer Lewis, Marin Hinkle …
Jane Fonda at an event for U (2006)
Emmy voting for the 2018 nominations ended on Monday, June 25, with the official noms set to be announced in just a few weeks on July 12. I’m a sucker for underdogs, so while I love many of of the actors who are widely expected to be nominated, there are a number of candidates I’m still rooting for even though they have distant 100/1 odds based on the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users.

But 100/1 odds don’t always turn out to be so bad. Last year there were nine actors who made the cut across more than a dozen categories despite having those odds in our predictions: Jane Fonda (Best Comedy Actress, “Grace and Frankie”), Zach Galifianakis (Best Comedy Actor, “Baskets”), Kathryn Hahn (Best Comedy Supporting Actress, “Transparent”), Wanda Sykes (Best Comedy Guest Actress, “Black-ish”), Samira Wiley (Best Drama Supporting Actress, “The Handmaid’s Tale”), Mandy Patinkin (Best Drama Supporting Actor,...

'Guys With Kids' Tempestt Bledsoe: Bill Cosby 'put my grades on his dressing room door'
In an age-appropriate role, Tempestt Bledsoe plays a mother of four in NBC's "Guys With Kids." Yet because of her baby face and growing up on "The Cosby Show," people expect her to somehow still be a child, frozen in time.

Bledsoe was Vanessa, the fourth of the five children on "The Cosby Show" (1984-92). Wearing a killer one-shouldered, body-hugging red dress and very high red heels, Bledsoe, 39, reflects on why she was able to resist the pitfalls that engulf so many child stars.

"I wanted to go to college on time, and I did," she tells Zap2it of attending New York University. "When Dr. Cosby found out I was doing that, he moved the shooting schedule" to accommodate her classes, she says.

Decades later, Bledsoe still beams when she says, "He put my grades on his dressing room door."

Bledsoe earned a degree in finance because "I wanted to do something different,...

Global Showbiz Briefs: Rupert Murdoch On Future Of Newspapers, ‘Strong Medicine’, Mario Melchiot In ‘Absolutely Modern’
Rupert Murdoch On Future Of Newspapers Rupert Murdoch restated his faith in the long-term future of newspapers in a weekend address at the annual News Awards in Sydney. Murdoch said that splitting News Corp into separate entertainment and publishing companies next year would see both strive to “dominate against our competitors by providing and distributing the most informative and entertaining content in the world”. He added, “Print will be with us for many, many years”, but we must also provide our readers with the greatest news experience possible on other platforms”. The address was intended as a morale booster for News Ltd.’s journalists after a sweeping restructure by chief executive Kim Williams, which resulted in an estimated 300 layoffs. – Don Groves ‘Strong Medicine’ To Get Reality Treatment In Holland Dutch broadcaster Sbs has commissioned a local reality version of Lifetime drama Strong Medicine. Hollywood Managers Back New Appeal Challenging Talent Agencies Act (Exclusive)
Rick Siegel
Matthew Belloni

Should Hollywood talent managers remain in danger of losing their hard-earned commissions if they are found to have improperly "procured" employment for clients? That issue, long one of the most sensitive in the entertainment representation community, is coming to the foreground again in the form of a new appeal by legal crusader Rick Siegel that is finding broad if not overwhelming support within the talent management community. Siegel, as you might recall, is the manager (now former manager--he left the business) whose case against actress Rosa Blasi (Lifetime's Strong Medicine) challenged the Talent Agencies Act, the California law

Wendi McLendon-Covey
Fox’s new comedy I Hate My Teenage Daughter has nabbed one of this summer’s big-screen scene-stealers.

Wendi McLendon-Covey, who played Rita, the nympho-esque member of Maya Rudolph’s wedding party in Bridesmaids, has joined the pilot of Teenage Daughter, TVLine has learned exclusively.

The actress will play Principal Diego, the woman running the high school attended by the bitchy offspring of Annie (Jamie Pressly) and Nikki (Katie Finneran). Diego herself is a former mean girl and used to torment Nikki back in the day — and it’s something at which she apparently still excels. Strong Medicine‘s Rosa Blasi...

Anyone Watching Shanola Hampton In Showtime Network’s “Shameless”?
I’m not very familiar with Shanola Hampton’s work; partly because her resume begins in 2001, and there isn’t a lot on it – mostly bit parts in TV series like Eli Stone, Scrubs, Strong Medicine and Reba.

In the new Showtime series Shameless, she plays Veronica, described as “sassy, sexy… always willing and able to lend a hand, go dancing with gal-pal Fiona or party down with Frank [her neighbors]. She’s smart and wants to pursue a medical career, if only she hadn’t gotten fired from the hospital for stealing supplies. Veronica and her man Kev are totally hot for each other, and their wild sex life borders on adventuresome.”

So, she’s sassy, she’s also a thief, and has a wild sex life. That about sum it up?

The “Frank” mentioned is the star of the show, played by William H Macy – a single father of 6 spirited kids.

'Lone Star's' Rosa Blasi Talks Divorce, Cougars and Pro Athletes
Guest blogger David Kennerley: If anyone knows how to fight setbacks with a smile, it's Rosa Blasi. After a dicey divorce from a football pro, the multitalented mom (her daughter just turned 4) skewered the experience by writing "Jock Itch: Memoir of a Retired Jersey Chaser," due early next year. The model-gorgeous actress, best known for starring in Lifetime's "Strong Medicine," had a plum role on "Lone Star," one of the most buzzed-about TV shows this fall. We spoke to the bubbly Blasi on the eve of -- can you believe it? -- Fox's decision to cancel the series.

David Kennerley: You played a so-called "trophy wife" in "Lone Star" and "Make It or Break It." Did you draw from your own experience?

Rosa Blasi: Absolutely. On the East Coast, when I was married to the NFL star, I certainly was a trophy wife. On the West Coast, I have...

Andie MacDowell
Exclusive: 'Lone Star' lassoes Andie MacDowell and Rosa Blasi
Andie MacDowell
In what would be her first major TV gig, Andie MacDowell is thisclose to joining the cast of Fox’s best new fall series, Lone Star. Additionally, Rosa Blasi—of Make It or Break It and Strong Medicine fame—has signed on to recur on the Texas-set drama.

MacDowell, whose deal I’m told is 98 percent done, would play the love interest of Jon Voight’s oil tycoon. Blasi, meanwhile, is set for the role of Blake, the Lady Macbeth-esque trophy wife of Mark Deklin’s character, Trammell.

Lone Star revolves around a con man (played by rising star James Wolk...

Though so, the insider revealed that Tamera, who starred in the show alongside her identical sister Tia Mowry, still has to convince her family that 38-year-old Adam is the one. The source disclosed, "Her family is not crazy about him. Tia and Adam don't always get along, but the couple are happy together and giving it another try."

An Unexpected Career
"It's Jungian," says Sam Trammell nonchalantly when describing how his dreams inspire his acting. He's equally offhand when explaining how as a college student he planned to become a theoretical physicist but was forced to lower his sights: "I was advanced, but I wasn't a genius, and at Brown University I majored in semiotics, which refers to the interdisciplinary study of sign systems and how they work, including linguistic theory, Marxist theory, psychoanalysis, feminist theory, and film theory. I did most of my work in contemporary French philosophy."He certainly never imagined himself an actor, let alone one who plays a shape-shifter on a hit HBO show about vampires. The series is "True Blood," created by Alan Ball based on the novels of Charlaine Harris, and Trammell is enjoying the unexpected development. He admits that early in his career, he had a condescending attitude toward television. He would not have...
