End of Watch was a gritty and realistic cop thriller that became a critical and box office hit when it was released in 2012. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal as Brian Taylor and Michael Peña as Mike Zavala, the film features the two LAPD partners as they work in South Central Los Angeles. Written and directed by David Ayer, the movie really shows the bond between the two young officers. It's now getting a second life on Max where it sits at number five in the top 10 and even climbed as high as the number two spot.
The movie follows Taylor and Peña as they perform their duties and things take a turn when a cartel targets them. Ayer grew up in South Central L.A. and has written several films about corrupt officers working at the LAPD. But for End of Watch, he wanted to showcase two honest and dedicated officers. Ahead of its 2012 release,...

The universe can be a pretty crummy place sometimes, so it's important to seek out every last nugget of joy or, absent something so extravagant, just a smile here and there to ward off total despair. You could argue that we don't even deserve the latter in extraordinarily crummy times such as these, and maybe this is true, but I like getting out of bed in the morning, so I'll afford myself the privilege of hope however it materializes. Did the Cleveland Cavaliers win last night? That's one foot on the floor. Did I text with some out-of-town friends I haven't personally seen in months or years? There's another. Did John Carpenter just win a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association? Oh baby, we're up and headed for that first cup.

The best Jake Gyllenhaal movies showcase how impressive the actor's career has been. He debuted in one of his father's (director Stephen Gyllenhaal) standout films, City Slickers and never looked back. Although initially typecast as a brooding, moody teen in angsty pictures such the twisty cult classic Donnie Darko, Gyllenhaal has since aggressively diversified his acting portfolio. In addition to taking on a wide breadth of challenging roles that have cemented his status as an undoubted A-lister, Gyllenhaal has also performed on Broadway, while picking up a mammoth 30 awards for his various portrayals.
Pulling together a definitive list of Gyllenhaal's movies requires a comprehensive view of his two-plus decade career, so only his films with major roles are considered. A lot of his work as a child saw him only appear briefly on screen and in minor roles. Once he began getting supporting and leading parts, Gyllenhaal's career took off...

Jake Gyllenhaal's versatile filmography showcases his ability to fully embody a wide range of unique and iconic roles. Ambulance may seem like a typical action movie, but Gyllenhaal's dedication elevates the film and makes it worth watching. Despite box office struggles, the success of Ambulance highlights Jake Gyllenhaal's undeniable star power and acting talent.
Over the years, I have become a big fan of Jake Gyllenhaal, and now that his 2022 action thriller is becoming a hit on Netflix, I'm happy it (and he) are getting the attention they deserve. Like many famous actors, Jake Gyllenhaal got his start at a very young age. The actor was only 11 when he appeared in the Western comedy, City Slickers. However, it took another decade for Gyllenhaal to really break through when he starred in 2001's Bubble Boy. Since then, Jake Gyllenhaal's movies have piled up and led to a number of unique and iconic roles.

One of Seinfeld’s very best episodes found the gang ditching New York City and venturing upstate for a weekend at Susan’s father’s cabin. Along the way, they stop over at a nondescript small town to visit a “Bubble Boy” on his birthday — although he turns out to be a vulgar young man (voiced by adult comedian Jon Hayman) who lives behind a plastic divider due to an unspecified medical condition.
The Bubble Boy has to be rushed to the hospital after getting into a physical fight with George over a game of Trivial Pursuit. In response to the history question “Who invaded Spain in the 8th century?,” the Bubble Boy confidently answered “The Moors.” But George claimed that he was wrong, citing the answer on the card, which clearly read “The Moops.”

When it was released in January of 2001, Richard Kelly's bleak time-travel psychological drama "Donnie Darko" caused a notable stir. The title character, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, is a teen struggling with schizophrenia in 1988, a time when Reagan's great Conservative revolution was drawing to a close and adults clung to suburban conformity as it crumbled under them. Donnie is obsessed with time-travel and regularly hallucinates a vicious, strange anthropomorphic rabbit monster named Frank (all while attempting to socialize at school and foster a romance with a classmate played by Jena Malone). Patrick Swayze appears as a cheesy self-self guru, Drew Barrymore plays one of Donnie's teachers, and Maggie Gyllenhaal plays Donnie's sister.
By turns psychedelic and weirdly moving (in a Goth sort of way), "Donnie Darko" quickly became a cult hit and rotated directly into the local midnight movie circuit, attracting a wide swath of misfits and night people.

Spider-Man (Tom Holland) has been the star of one of the best movie trilogies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far, and through it, the MCU subtly paid off a Spider-Man 2 emergency casting plan. After a long wait due to trouble with the rights to the characters, Spider-Man finally joined the MCU in Captain America: Civil War, where he was recruited by Tony Stark to join Team Iron Man, and after this first adventure, Spider-Man starred in his own trilogy, with the third installment, Spider-Man: No Way Home, being one of the biggest multiversal adventures the MCU has seen.
In each of his solo adventures in the MCU, Spider-Man has come across different villains, starting with Adrian Toomes/Vulture (Michael Keaton) in Spider-Man: Homecoming. In his second movie, Spider-Man: Far From Home, the web-slinger met Quentin Beck a.k.a. Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal), who set up the conflict in Spider-Man: No Way Home,...

Lady Gaga (“House of Gucci”) and Jake Gyllenhaal (“The Guilty”) sat down for a virtual chat for Variety’s Actors on Actors, presented by Amazon Studios. For more, click here.
Lady Gaga hasn’t added “movie critic” to her résumé yet — but she can’t help raving about Jake Gyllenhaal’s latest film, “The Guilty.” When she sees Gyllenhaal at our photo shoot for Actors on Actors, her praise is as effusive and passionate as fans who’ve watched her recent red-carpet run-ins might expect. “It was phenomenal,” Gaga says about Gyllenhaal’s 2021 Netflix film. “My heart was pounding out of my chest.”
Gyllenhaal plays a 911 dispatcher in the Antoine Fuqua-directed thriller — shot in only 11 days. The short time frame may have helped generate intensity, but left some doubt in its star’s mind: Gyllenhaal confides in Gaga that he wished he could have gone back and redone parts of his performance.

Jake Gyllenhaal loves BossLogic's latest Spider-Man: Far From Home and Bubble Boy mashup. The world is undergoing a lot of stress at the moment and BossLogic has been working hard to keep comic book fans entertained. Gyllenhaal stumbled upon the artist's new mashup and it gave him a good laugh, so he decided to pay it forward and share it with his fans on social media.
A lot of people feel like Bubble Boy at the moment as everyone tries their best to practice social distancing and stay at home. With that in mind, BossLogic took Jake Gyllenhaal's Jimmy Livingston character from the 2001 movie and turned him into Spider-Man: Far From Home's Mysterio. He's standing in an empty toilet paper aisle with the last few rolls in his hands promoting the "Bubble Man" movie. Gyllenhaal had this to say about the excellent poster.

It’s October, and that means it’s horror movie season. Netflix is ready to scare your pants off with the streaming platform’s latest original horror movie, “Eli.” Check out the trailer below.
Directed by Ciarán Foy (“Sinister 2”), the film follows Eli (Charlie Shotwell from 2016’s “Captain Fantastic”), an 11-year-old boy with an auto-immune disorder who, sheltered from the dangerous environmental stimuli of the world, is checked into a “clean house” for treatment. But he soon discovers that the house is not just “clean” — it’s haunted. Think “Bubble Boy” meets “The Conjuring.” Similarities to the latter are reinforced by the presence of Lili Taylor (star of “The Conjuring” and the recently canceled Netflix series “Chambers”) in the film’s cast. Kelly Reilly (recently seen in TV’s “Yellowstone”) also stars.

The death of Verne Troyer has officially been ruled a suicide by a Los Angeles County coroner. Verne Troyer passed away in April of this year. He was 49-years old. Troyer was a struggling alcoholic for many years and also dealt with depression. At the time of his death, suicide was rumored, but was never confirmed until now. The coroner says that the actor died from a "sequelae of alcohol intoxication," which means that he drank a lot of alcohol, causing him to be hospitalized for the last three weeks of his life.
At the time of his hospitalization, reports say that Verne Troyer's blood alcohol level was more than triple the .08 limit, which is pretty high, especially considering that he stood at just below 3-feet high. Police rushed to his residence back in April after receiving a call that he was suicidal, which got him into the hospital, where...

Jake Gyllenhaal has won over plenty of fans throughout the years. While he may have kicked off his career as a child actor in films like City Slickers and A Dangerous Woman, it wasn't until he broke back into the Hollywood scene as a young adult starring in movies like Donnie Darko and Bubble Boy that people started noticing he was just as hot as he was talented. Some could argue that he has gotten better looking with age, but we can't seem to forget how adorable he was at the start of his adult acting career. So we rounded up 25 photos of the Hollywood A-lister from back in the day. Please enjoy.

Jake Gyllenhaal is within arm’s reach of his first major comic book role. And we couldn’t be more excited.
News broke earlier this week that Gyllenhaal, star of Stronger, Nightcrawler and The Day After Tomorrow, has come into contention to headline Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 as Quentin Beck (Aka Mysterio), where he will presumably star opposite the returning Michael Keaton (Adrian Toomes/The Vulture).
Marvel Studios is yet to announce anything official, so it’d be foolish to rush to conclusions. Still, the mere fact that Jake Gyllenhaal is negotiating for the role is exciting in and of itself – not least because he jumped to the tip-top of Marvel’s wishlist after Ryan Gosling (!) bowed out of the race for Mysterio.

"I'm messing with your life." "My life is better with you in it." Warner Bros has debuted a trailer for the adaptation Everything, Everything, a drama about a young woman with a disease that keeps her locked up inside her home. She longs for a boy who lives across the street, and of course they try to get together. Amandla Stenberg, who played Rue in the original The Hunger Games (but is all grown up now), stars as Maddy in the film. The cast includes Nick Robinson as the boy she's in love with, Ana de la Reguera, Anika Noni Rose, and Taylor Hickson. It's based on the book by Nicola Yoon. This looks particularly cheesy and sappy, but that makes sense. It's obvious why Warner Bros released this on Valentine's Day - it looks like a mix between Me Before You and The Space Between Us and Bubble Boy,...

Jake Gyllenhaal's recent movie wives don't even have a lifespan long enough to survive the trailer. At least that was the case with Southpaw and now Demolition, the latest movie from Wild and Dallas Buyers Club director Jean-Marc Vallée. In it Gyllenhaal stars as a man facing some tough times when his life is shattered by the death of his wife. That may be a somewhat familiar setup for a movie, but what looks to really take Demolition to the next level is yet another remarkable performance by Gyllenhaal. It seems like year after year he's getting better and better material to work with (he's certainly grown a lot since Bubble Boy), and it's probably a safe bet that this is a movie to keep an eye on for his performance alone. When our Erik...

The Weinstein Company released their new drama film, "Southpaw," into theaters this weekend, and the top, major movie critics have turned in their reviews. It turns out that the movie got a pretty mixed bag with an overall 57 score out of a possible 100 across 41 reviews at Metacritic.com site. The film stars: 50 Cent, Forest Whitaker, Jake Gyllenhaal, Oona Laurence and Rachel McAdams. We've added blurbs from a few of the critics, below. Mick Lasalle at the San Francisco Chronicle, gave it a really nice 100 score, stating: "The experience of Southpaw is rather like seeing the truth behind the cliches, revived in all their pain and power to surprise." Richard Roeper from the Chicago Sun-Times, gave it an 88 score, saying: "While Southpaw will surprise almost no one who has seen a fair amount of boxing movies, Fuqua’s direction and the excellent performances keep the action humming." Alonso Duralde over at TheWrap,...

Jake Gyllenhaal has come a long way since Bubble Boy, so it's always fun to take a look back to see when stars were just beginning to make a name for themselves! The Oscar nominee sat down with E! News to talk about the movie that put him in a bubble for a long time, and joked that while the bubble was a hassle, it was incredibly "protective" during death-defying stunts. Even though he was definitely nervous, he told the director, "Let's go!" when it came time to almost get sucked into an engine. Even though it looks like a pretty basic prop—a giant plastic bubble—Gyllenhaal revealed to us at the time that it was anything but basic. It often malfunctioned or caused other problems,...

The long-delayed trailer for David O’Russell‘s quirky comedy, Accidental Love, has finally dropped, and the fact that it was filmed seven years ago couldn’t be more evident.
Previously titled Nailed, the film tells the story of a waitress (Jessica Biel) who’s ditched by her fiance (James Marsden) when she’s shot with a nail in the head that she doesn’t have the insurance to remove. This leads her to seek the help of a pretty politician, played by a baby calf-looking Jake Gyllenhaal, to reform health care.
Accidental Love is a departure from Russell’s most recent project American Hustle, with the tone feeling like a mix of Bubble Boy and Win a Date with Tad Hamilton. Despite the film’s campiness, you can’t help but imagine what it would’ve done for Biel’s career back when it was made in the 2000s.

Jake Gyllenhaal lost a bunch of weight for his Nightcrawler role, but it appears he gained it all back (and then some) for his upcoming boxing flick Southpaw. The first image from the film has been released, featuring the actor's new look for the Antoine Fuqua movie, and by "new look" I mean a ton of muscle. "You got something to say about Bubble Boy? Step into the ring, bro!" A few months ago Gyllenhaal told Variety he worked out six...

For this week’s spotlight piece, I wanted to take a look at one of Hollywood’s most interesting stars. It’s certified A-lister Jake Gyllenhaal, the rare actor who’s only becoming more famous as he pursues more and more interesting fare. In fact, for a true blue A-list actor, he’s only rarely gone the blockbuster route. More often, he chooses unique work that requires him to really go above and beyond. Already an Academy Award nominee, he’s someone who’s due for not just another nomination, but a win as well. I have no doubt that Oscar will come calling soon, perhaps even next year, but when that time comes, he’ll be incredibly deserving of that honor. As such, it’s a pleasure to fete him this week in my Spotlight on the Stars series. Gyllenhaal got his start on screens with a small role in City Slickers,...

Completely out of nowhere, Moone Boy became my favorite comedy of 2013 -- ending up in the No. 1 year-end slot. I started to evangelize its coming-of-age goodness to anybody who would listen and went out of my way to sell it hard to both John Landgraf of FX and Ted Sarandos of Netflix. Being Human (USA) hits the ground running in its season four opener. Here's Kaci's review...
This review contains spoilers.
4.1 Old Dogs, New Tricks
Being Human (Us) is finally back and hitting the ground running. It's been three months since the last episode and Josh is still a wolf...mostly.
First things first: Aidan and Nora are friends again! After their fall out last season, it made me really happy to see the two people who care about Josh the most come together to take care of him in his, uh, "time of need." That time of need happens to be every day of the month except the full moon — which is the only time he's human. He rehumanizes thirty minutes before Nora wolfs out, which means they really only have half an hour per month to be together. Happy honeymoon, right?
After Nora has to leave for her turn,...
