I love watching My Uncle Silas, it's a great drama series, i first watched it in January 2003, so i missed a couple of series, i got right into it and when it was advertised on tv, i thought to my self that this programme will be great and i watched the 6 episodes from a series for 2003 and it was enjoyable.
In a time of space invaders and dashing new technologies, this kind of television takes you back to a quieter and simpler existence of life in the old countryside when adult innocence often included a childish approach. A rare gem among modern programming, fluid in every way throughout its presentation. Not too tart, not too sweet, rather just right. Albert Finney's character is as enchanting as it is brilliant, all delivered with the innocence of a puppy and the integrity of an old master.
The tone of the show is cloying in the extreme, from the cheery theme music to Albert Finney's over-the-top, hammy portrayal of the lead character. My Uncle Silas depicts a lecherous old man who drags his young nephew all over the countryside then tells the kid to scram so he can hit on the ladies. Uncle Silas typically gets his women drunk or high, even slipping them a mickey without their knowledge. When he's not pursuing women, Uncle Silas is poaching fish and game, which he gleefully allows the young boy to witness. The whole message of this show seems to be "boys will be boys," and somehow that's okay if it's set in the 1800s and the costuming is authentic No thank you.
