Minnaram (1994) : Brief Review -

Not a great comedy but a very fine emotional drama. Priyadarshan makes one of the most silliest mistake by giving away the most vital twist in the middle. Priyadarshan was forming new themes of his own in 90s after making several worthy films before Minnaram so, the product value of his work kept increasing. Such increased hype sometimes put a lot of burden on the director and it happens with almost every good director, even many legendary directors in past have gone through such phases. Minnaram has some hilarious situational gags that can make you laugh even after 2050 but rest of the show is not enough to call it a great comedy. After those glorious laughters, the film shifts to a new section of family drama, romantic drama and emotional drama at the same time. The film is about Bobby who leads a carefree life until his former lover arrives at his place with a baby girl claiming she is his daughter. However, Bobby must find the truth behind her claims to prove his innocence to his family. Priyadarshan has done one big mistake that can't be tolerated or forgiven and that is, he opens his most important twist in the middle of the story. After that, the film is left with nothing more to reveal and becomes highly predictable. Keeping that medical term issue unrevealed until the climax would have given it a solid twisty portion and it would have been a painful shock for the audience. But sadly, we realise it just after the interval point and then we don't really care much about it when the narration tries to groove us emotionally with the same thing in the climax. Rest, It's a fine emotional drama with some good comedy scenes that can be enjoyed together by all three generations in the family. Mohanlal, Thilakan and Shobna makes your experience worthy enough. That "Chithram" kind of storytelling and burn is missing though. I am reducing half a star for directorial lameness.
