South Korea celebrated the centennial of the country’s cinema in style. “Parasite” became the first film to win the coveted Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival as well as the first film to be nominated for and win a Golden Globe award after being nominated for both Best Director and Best Foreign Language Film, eventually being awarded the Best Foreign Language Film of the year. Commercially as well, Korean films enjoyed a successful year, with both “Extreme Job” and “Exit” benefiting from a strong word of mouth to secure their places among the highest grossing Korean films of all time at the domestic box office. Simultaneously, independent cinema also flourished last year, with several smaller films winning big at various international film festivals around the globe, sending hopeful signs for the country’s independent cinema.
Naturally, expectations are high from what Korean cinema has to offer this year.

South Korean production giants Cj Entertainment had quite a successful 2019. Beginning the year with “Extreme Job”, which benefitted from such a strong word-of-mouth that it went on two become the second most successful Korean film of all time at the domestic box office, their hit record continued later in the year with the record-breaking “Parasite” and furthered their commercial success for the year with the disaster comedy “Exit”. Their last film of the year, “Ashfall”, is still running successfully in the cinemas when promotions have already started for their next release and it looks as though they will be beginning 2020 as they ended 2019: with a film starring Ha Jung-woo.

Pair to walk Paris beat for thriller '36'
PARIS -- Co-producers Gaumont and French production company LGM said Wednesday that Gerard Depardieu and Daniel Auteuil will be pitted against each other as rival policemen battling to get the same girl and the same job in 36, a thriller by French director Olivier Marchal. The two French stars will be teaming up for the second time, following their 2001 comedy Le Placard (The Closet), with shooting scheduled for February in France. The film, called 36 to signify the address of Paris' police headquarters at 36 Quai des Orfevres, is Marchal's second. Like his first film, Gangsters, 36 will explore the confrontation between two powerful policemen who are forced to resolve their conflicts within the boundaries of their profession. "The story is about two people with a great depth to their personalities, and, like the French classic The Count of Monte Cristo, it has grandeur, decadence and vengeance woven into the plot," said Cyril Colbeau-Justin, head of LGM, which also produced Gangsters. "This is more than mere suspense," he added. Gaumont, which will co-produce and finance the film, declined comment on the picture's budget, which according to French film weekly Ecran Total will be 13.5 million ($15.4 million). The film is due to be released by the end of 2004.

Gaumont reports loss for six-month period
PARIS -- Gaumont posted a 9.3 million ($9.2 million) net loss in the first half of 2002, compared with a profit of 62.9 million for the same period in 2001, according to results released Tuesday. Revenue was down more than 46% to 33.8 million ($33.3 million), compared with 62.3 million. Gaumont attributed the difference to the success of last year's Les Visiteurs en Amerique and The Closet, which racked up more than 5 million admissions. Their best offering in the beginning of this year, The Raid, sold only 1.4 million tickets. Gaumont also cited investments that will not mature until 2003 or 2004 for its sub-par showing. Total capital for the group rose to 146.6 million ($144.4 million), with total debts at 30.9 million ($30.4 million).
