The music world has lost a true icon: Anita Lane, the Bad Seed who helped redefine the spirit of evil in rock & roll. “Once there came a storm in the form of a girl,” Nick Cave famously sang, and for many fans, Anita Lane was that storm. She was a key Cave collaborator, but also an artist and cult figure in her own right, with solo gems like Dirty Pearl and Sex O’Clock. She co-wrote classics like “From Her to Eternity” and “Stranger Than Kindness,” the song that provided...

Anita Lane, the singer-songwriter who cowrote some of the Birthday Party and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ most memorable songs, has died at age 61. Rolling Stone has confirmed Lane’s death; a cause and date of death has yet to be revealed.
As a solo artist, Lane wrote dark, luscious chamber pop that owed a debt to Burt Bacharach and Serge Gainsbourg. Her light, airy falsetto had a knack for cutting through collaborator Mick Harvey’s arrangements. As a lyricist working with the Birthday Party and the Bad Seeds,...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from Lifetime’s remake of “The Bad Seed.” For a non-spoilers take, check out IndieWire’s review.]
In 1956, “The Bad Seed” set the standard for cute kids gone bad on the big screen, tapping into the fear that maybe sweet little Jenny isn’t so innocent after all — that evil is born, not made. It was the antidote to the Patty Dukes and Shirley Temples that had dotted the media, and paved the way for future movies of its kind like “The Good Son” and “Orphan.”
Lifetime’s remake of Mervyn LeRoy’s classic follows the general structure of the original film but gender-flips the single parent, casting Rob Lowe as dad David Grossman, who begins to have uneasy suspicions about his perfect little girl Emma (Mckenna Grace) after an unforeseen tragedy occurs. The film also changes out the gardener/caretaker, who in the original film saw through the little girl’s facade,...

“Basket of kisses! Basket of kisses! Basket of kisses!”
This saccharine phrase heard in Lifetime’s “The Bad Seed” remake is a haunting holdover from Mervyn LeRoy’s classic 1956 psychological thriller. Delivered with just the right amount of false cheer by the titular murderous child Emma Grossman (McKenna Grace), the line is made even creepier because she’s actually practicing saying it in front of a mirror, followed by a calculated smile.
It’s frightening, it’s silly, and it’s exactly the type of camp that’s expected — nay, craved — from the Lifetime remake machine. Sadly, that’s the best part of the entire movie, and it was already blown in the teaser trailer
Rob Lowe executive produces and directs this update of “The Bad Seed,” in which he also stars as the gender-flipped single parent David Grossman who suspects his overachieving “honey bear” is a little off following a tragedy.

1956 is not, from our vantage point, a particularly lauded year in cinema but it's an Oscar field we tend to think of regularly for various reasons including but not limited to:
-Camp value (Ten Commandments, Bad Seed)
-Musicals (The King and I, High Society)
-Strange snubs (The Searchers received zero nominations despite Oscar's obsession with John Ford)
-Delayed foreign grandeur (La Strada and Seven Samurai, 1954 films both, were up for Oscars)
-not one but two kaiju movies (Godzilla and Rhodan)...and more.
What's your favorite movie of 1956? I don't think I've seen enough to feel comfortable with a full top ten but here are the five I like best currently (with much more to see) after the jump...

Usually, when writing these lists, we set the halfway point to define the good versus bad. But while “Gilmore Girls” does not lack for adversaries and antagonists, the fact is that so many of these characters have such charms that ranking them was a real challenge.

Shrouded in grief and chilly to the core, Andrew Dominik’s mournful documentary “One More Time With Feeling” is at once sobering in tone and intoxicating in style. The intimate film follows singer Nick Cave in and out of the studio as lays down tracks for his upcoming album “Skeleton Tree,” doing so in the face of tremendous personal loss. Though it will undoubtedly hit fans the hardest, even those less familiar with the Australian rocker will find much to admire in this lyrical portrait of sorrow, creativity and perseverance, shot in luscious black and white 3D.
Cave commissioned the film himself, intending it to be his first, last and only public statement to support the release of his latest album, and it’s easy to understand why. In July 2015, Cave’s 15-year-old son Arthur died, falling off a cliff in the English town of Brighton. Arthur died before Cave...

Mubi is exclusively showing Billy Wilder and Alexander Esway's Mauvaise Graine a.k.a. Bad Seed (1934) in the United States and most countries around the world from August 18 - September 16, 2016.In light of his illustrious Hollywood career to follow, Billy Wilder’s obscure directorial debut, Mauvaise Graine (1934), may seem like a mere curiosity. Making the film as he was passing through France by way of Germany en route to America, Wilder regarded the work with little adoration. For him, the experience was one rife with difficulty; it wasn’t fun, there was tremendous pressure, and he simply wasn’t accustomed to have such sweeping control over a production. But the writing was on the wall by 1933, and Wilder, like so many others, was keen to get out of Berlin while the getting was good. Arriving first in Paris, he met other film professionals seeking refuge from the burgeoning Nazi party,...

The best of the bunch in this anthology of vaguely interconnected shorts are the outrageous and uproarious genre pastiches “Friday the 31st” and “Bad Seed.” I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): not impressed by most movies labeled “horror”
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Most horror movies don’t usually do much for me — I tend not to find gore frightening — and the ones that are supposed to be funny typically do even less: I tend not to find gore funny, either. But the little packages of horror and horror comedy that make up the new anthology Tales of Halloween offer among them a few gems that made me laugh out loud or shiver with their creepy atmosphere.

Bone Tomahawk: It’s a horror film, but it’s mostly a western. Add Kurt Russell, some cannibals and basically point me in the direction of the movie theater because I’m sold. “Bone Tomahawk” is an impressive film, one of the best of the year so far; a mix of unusual humor, touches of thoroughly effective and satisfying horror, a beautifully rendered western era composition, and stunning performances from an impressive cast. Richard Jenkins, known to horror fans as one of the operators of horror in “The Cabin in the Woods”, is amazing. Mr. Jenkins constructs a character that is both too old to banter with the mindset of those younger than him but also too old to not share whatever wisdom he can conjure up through insufferable anecdotes. Matthew Fox, from televisions “Lost”, plays a prideful and somewhat despicable hired gun. Mr. Fox might be at his best here,...

Currently in its tenth year, the Toronto After Dark Film Festival (Tad) is set to run from October 15 – 23 in its home, Scotiabank Theatre. Tales Of Halloween is the latest contender to challenge Trick ‘r Treat‘s beloved status as “Numero Uno Halloween Horror Anthology,” and it’s an admirable effort at that. Opting for ten shorter stories from eleven different filmmakers, Tales Of Halloween plays like an old-fashioned radio show that would have been aired on October 31st for those souls who dare not adventure outside. This means each short only runs about ten minutes, calling back to The ABCs Of Death’s more challenging, rapid-fire structure. There are clear winners among these haunted efforts, but the likes of Darren Lynn Bousman, Neil Marshall, Mike Mendez, Lucky McKee, and other indie favorites ensure that their “October Society” rings in Halloween with ample thrills, gore, and good-natured laughs.
The shorts all share a connective bond, as you’ll see certain characters wandering around numerous entries, along with a host of famous faces who bring their cameo stamp-of-approval.

The CW's Supernatural is more popular in Season 11 than it has ever been, and the thrills, shocks and surprises don't show any signs of slowing down over the next few months. The series returns with all-new episodes just in time for Halloween, with the episode titled Bad Seed kicking things off on October 7. While we only have a few short days to wait until Dean and Sam are back fighting the good fight, The CW has released a full two-minute trailer. And be warned, it doesn't look good for the brothers. In fact, one of them may not make it out of this season alive.

Carlivati had been with the daytime drama since 2012, coming off his run as headwriter on sister soap One Life to Live. When news of his dismissal broke on Twitter Friday, many fans credited Carlivati with saving the show around the time that One Life to Live and All My Children were cancelled.

It may only be July, but it can take a while to get in just the right mood for certain annual festivities. So, thank goodness for the early arrival of a trailer for Tales Of Halloween – an anthology horror movie featuring ten different segments, directed by eleven different directors.
“Ten stories are woven together by their shared theme of Halloween night in an American suburb, where ghouls, imps, aliens and axe murderers appear for one night only, to terrorise unsuspecting residents.”
In many respects, an advantage of a horror anthology is the fact that it allows for many filmmakers to showcase their work, giving the whole project a fascinating blend of flavours. However, what is notable about Tales Of Halloween, is that – despite – featuring the work of very individual directors, there is an overall tone that snakes through each one, making it feel very much like part of a larger whole.

There’s a scene in “Bad Seed,” the fifth episode of Fxx’s riotous new ‘toon Major Lazer, part of the network’s Animation Domination lineup, when the title character is battling a giant weed boogeyman named Mr. Mary-Jane and becomes snared in his opponent’s vine-like clutches. “I’ll keep growing back, Major Lazer, you’ll never kill me!” The creature snarls. The event series run of Fox's "Gracepoint" ended on Thursday (December 11) night and if you don't wanna know whodunnit, you'd better stop reading... now. Ok, really, I'm about to talk about the finale and its aftermath before segueing into my post-mortem chat with co-showrunner Dan Futterman... So you've been warned. Oh and I guess the conversation and article spoil "Broadchurch" as well. It's a somewhat specific focus. Apologies... So Ellie's husband Joe did it! Or not. For around the first 20 minutes of the finale, all signs were pointing to the guilt of Josh Hamilton's Joe, the same killer from "Broadchurch" and I was worried that I'd have to call everybody involved with "Gracepoint" a liar for keeping the same killer and the same basic motivation -- Joe was having an unconsummated emotional affair with 12-year-old Danny Solano -- but only changing the method -- Danny tripped while fleeing with Joe...

"20,000 Days on Earth"

Calling 20,000 Days on Earth “a documentary about Nick Cave” is both accurate and deeply reductive. Yes, its primary focus is a walk through Cave’s life and career and zeroes in on the creation of his last album, 2013’s Push the Sky Away, but it is so full of stunningly considered ideas and cheeky surrealism that it is unlike any rock doc ever made.
That was the point, according to Cave. “Music documentaries are often very similar to meeting a hero, you know? You love the person’s music but you wish you never met them,” he told EW during a discussion of the film.

One of the most unlikely collaborations in pop history came in 1995, when Kylie Minogue appeared on Nick Cave's Murder Ballad 'Where The Wild Roses Grow'.
The pair remained friends and have reunited, Minogue appearing in Cave's upcoming film 20,000 Days on Earth.
"Kylie, we just on the off chance, we got her to sing this song. It became this kind of minor hit in its day," Cave said.
"She came in this beam of light into our lives for a short time.
"It was a beautiful thing to be sitting with her in this way driving around in this car. it was great."
Other guests in Cave's car during the movie include Ray Winstone and former Bad Seed Blixa Bargeld.

Directors: Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard; Screenwriters: Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard and Nick Cave; Starring: Nick Cave, Warren Ellis, Ray Winstone, Kylie Minogue Running time: 97 mins; Certificate: 15
Nick Cave isn't one to do things like everyone else, so it's no surprise that 20,000 Days on Earth isn't your bog standard rock doc. There's a lot of talking, a lot of music and a smattering of archive in this collaboration with Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, but it's pieced together in a fittingly arch, self-conscious style that fits Cave like a dark black glove.
The film is ostensibly a day in the life of Nick Cave - his 20,000th day. (It's not.) In lieu of the usual talking heads, Cave instead wakes up in bed with his wife, before trudging out to see "his psychiatrist" (real-life psychoanalyst Darian Leader), have a catch-up lunch and chat with Bad Seed Warren Ellis, and...

"I wake, I write, I eat, I write, I watch TV..." so says rock icon Nick Cave in his opening narration voiceover. And in doing so lays out the template of this exceptional documentary. Of course, if you know the artist Cave, you will know that his life isn't quite that simple. And while the film plays like a day in the life of Nick, from the opening scene of him waking up in bed next to his wife Susie to final crescendo of an evening performance of an absolutely riveting live version of "Higgs Boson Blues" from his last album, it is everything in between that really explores and exposes the artist as a work in progress.
Directors Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard started out filming what was supposed to be an Epk for Nick's latest album Push The Sky Away but ended up with this truly revelatory film.

Orange Is the New Black, Season 2, Episode 13: “We Have Manners. We Are Polite.”

Directed by Contantine Makris
Released Friday, June 6 on Netflix Instant
“Bad seed,” “insane,” “psycho,” “the real evil”—these are just some of the ways in which Vee is referred to this episode. Strangely, it is a finale that works hard in its side stories to show a fuzzy line between good people and bad people, and mostly succeeds in doing so. So why exactly it features a central story that works to prove the complete opposite, about a sociopath with no redeeming qualities who is treated like a cancer on the prison, is a mystery. Are we really supposed to cheer her death after we just learned our lesson over the course of two seasons that life is not so clear cut? Close out the story singing “Ding Dong the Witch Is...

Though considered a straight-up rip-off of major Hollywood blockbusters at that time, the 1979 sci-fi horror mash-up The Visitor is a true classic in its uncut form. One that stands alongside its influences as a great example of 70s cinema. Sure, it culls its innards from plenty of iconic genre masterpieces. But working like some long lost Quentin Tarantino grindhouse epic, the movie proves itself to be a wholly original entity that surfs on its own unique wave of ridiculous awesomeness.

And if you love classics from that era, you'll not want to miss The Visitor, as Drafthouse Films rolls out a remastered theatrical release in several major cities.
