    modern algeria

the first review printed here is about a totally different film....this film takes place in the algeria of today and is about the problems of getting married.....the acting is excellent, the dialogue is almost entirely in french although the singing is in arabic....if one were to know algeria only from the news reports in the international press, one would be very surprised at this portrait of algerian society....available in france on dvd.....

    Algerian crumbs

A film of women , seductive, first, for admirable job of Carmen Maura. A film about family, women universe, save of apparences, respectability, love and death. Simple and touching story, great portraits and few crumbs reminding Luchino Visconti cinematography. Not surprising because it represents a portrait of a world fall.

Algeria, beginning of war, a delicate- powerful love story and a coffin.

And an energetic woman looking for fair measure.

Drops of humor, large circles of bitterness.

"Le Harem of Madame Ousmane" is a big house, with different flats where different kind of women are surviving the Algerian Civil War by developing their own coping mechanisms. The subject is difficult and the producer succeeds to avoid political statements by focusing on the way of life of these different women. It gives us an opportunity to enter the core of the Algerian people, their doubts, their dreams about Europe and France but also all the troubles that couples can face during these hard times. I watched it in french, have no idea of the quality of the subtitles for non french owners.I am convinced that the previous comment is not adequate for this movie. There is, for sure, a misunderstanding about the title.
