In Canada, the Ontario Film Review Board originally banned the film because it was too pornographic. The film was re-submitted under a pornographic license, and banned because it was too violent. By then, it had been selected for the Toronto Film Festival, and was approved in British Columbia and Québec. On March 8, 2001, the Ontario Film Review Board approved the film, with an R rating.

The lead actresses, Raffaëla Anderson and Karen Lancaume, and one of the directors, Coralie Trinh Thi, were adult film stars.
As a French noun, "un baiser" means "a kiss", but as a verb, "baiser" means "to fuck", so "baise-moi" translates to "fuck me". In some markets, the film has been screened as "Rape Me", but that title in French would be "Viole Moi". In a 2002 interview, "Rape Me" was rejected by directors Virginie Despentes and Coralie Trinh Thi.
