A bold theme on lesbian relationship - sensitively handled by a genius filmmaker

This is a Malayalam language film written and directed by the legendary P Padmarajan.

The film stands out for being one of the first to deal with a lesbian relationship. Being a product of its times, the messaging necessarily had to be subtle. It becomes clear only by the shocking ending. Until then the film seems to go down the path of a love triangle, rebellious teenagers and unrequited love.

Padmarajan's favourite Mohanlal delivers a sensitive performance. But the standout is by the protagonists played by Shari and Karthika who is the real lead here.

Wish the film could have been clear about the theme from the start, the lack of which and the inevitable confusion and dissatisfaction it leaves at the end is the reason for the lower rating. Otherwise, it's hats off to the director for writing a story on the theme and making a film on it!

nice movie though of serious type

A movie about two schoolgirls and the relationship between them . This movie shows the great acting talent of shari and karthika two of my childhood favourites . Not to mention acting of urvashi . Though i got it from a "mohanlal" section of the video selling shop this movie like many others shows the strong characters malayalam film actresses portray and their great acting ability .The raw human being is displayed by sharis character who is sensitive yet strong . I have never stayed in a boarding school but this movie as well as koodevide(1984) i liked very much for their teacher -student relationship as well as plot and acting

A great romantic classic. Romance redefined by Padmarajan Sir !!!

A Padmarajan's romantic classic drama with a very different subject leaving to the audience on the interpretations !!! All actors (Karthika, Shari,Mohanlal and Urvashi) acted brilliantly in their roles. Everyone excelled in their characters and the performances look so natural and pleasing. We are lucky to watch every Padmarajan's movie. Nobody in India would have dared to touch such a subject and present it in the best way. The direction is so brilliant that the audience can take their own opinions and interpretations on the relationship between characters. The giving of love is shown so brilliantly that you can feel for every character. Shari's character is very bold and strong and she faces the life situations smartly. Her love for Karthika's character is just so unconditional and giving at all times. Karthika's character is confused, calm and composed, but her way of showing love is to do whatever it takes to please her loved one. Mohanlal and Urvashi also show their love differently. Padmarajan's take of showing love is at a different level that nobody can match.

Cringe and Sinister

10/10 would not recommend as it's cringe and sinister. The plotline makes Lalettan seem like the villain in this movie. I find the relationship between Lalettan's and Karthika's charcter to be peculiar. Don't get me wrong, Lalettan and Karthika are an adorable on screen couple but not in this movie. The main reason I don't like this movie is because Lalettan seems like the bad guy in this movie as he appears to be endangering Karthika in the movie by leading her on and manipulating her in the end. Urvashi seems like another villain who turns out to be the culprit behing Lalettan's job suspension. All I can say is this movie as a horrendous nightmare and waste of time.
