Censorship in anime and just about every form of art is a tricky subject. On the one hand, banning or censoring something on the basis of current social norms could lead to a slippery slope where nothing is safe. But, conversely, giving anime creators total freedom but with no discipline can and will lead to offensive material being made mainstream. In the case of these anime, it was a good thing some key censors and cuts were made.

More often than not, anime adaptations of more mature and adult-leaning manga tend to water down or outright cut some of their characters' backstories due to how dark things can get. This isn't too surprising, and it also makes sense. At the end of the day, anime is a form of mass entertainment. Making even the edgiest story marketable is just a fact of life in the business.
This, however, is not the case for these anime. Unlike their contemporaries, these anime risked it all by adapting their characters' dark backstories as accurately and unabridged as possible. The end results were rarely (if ever) pretty to look at, nor were they always well-received. That said, the fact that these anime left these backstories uncensored and got away with it is a feat in and of itself.

Yu-Gi-Oh!has existed for nearly 30 years, and it's changed a lot over that time. What began as a humble manga about a meek boy and the cruel spirit who'd possess him in order to exact vengeance on those who wrong him via various games eventually morphed into one of the most successful anime and trading card game franchises in history. While the shift in focus of the series toward the Duel Monsters card game made Yu-Gi-Oh! more popular than it ever would have been otherwise, it did lose something special in the process.
The late Kazuki Takahashi's Yu-Gi-Oh! began as a horror manga, but these origins have been increasingly buried by each new installment in the anime franchise. While Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters, Yu-Gi-Oh! Gx, and Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's retained the eeriness and the mystical trappings of the manga, they rarely actively tried to be scary. And, for as dark as they can get,...

If there’s any franchise that seems like it would lend itself to an assembly-line game series, it’s Yu-Gi-Oh! Just let people battle with a ton of recognizable cards from the anime and manga and call it a day. And while there are certain series that offer this straightforward approach Yu-Gi-Oh! ’s video game history is surprisingly complicated. It’s a mixed bag as to whether or not a game was released outside of Japan, some of the games aren’t necessarily based on the card game itself, and if they are based on the card game, the application of the card game’s mechanics grows with each entry. Go back to the earliest entries and you might find some familiar things missing. All of this makes a release like Yu-Gi-Oh! Early Days Collection more than just a repetitive package. Instead, it’s a snapshot of the nascent era of Yu-Gi-Oh! video games,...

In Yu-Gi-Oh!, young Yugi Muto is a high school student who unlocks a mysterious puzzle and battles opponents while playing the Duel Monsters card game. As Yugi and his friends participate in various tournaments, they face epic challenges revolving around Ancient Egyptian mythology. The high-stakes card game battles have Yugi and his allies saving the world from ruthless villains, summoning monsters, and casting spells against each other.
Yugi's Millennium Puzzle is one of the most iconic artifacts in Yu-Gi-Oh! lore, and it's central to both Yugi's story and the rise of his alter ego, the Pharaoh. The powers of the Millennium Puzzle are remarkable, and its deeper lore enriches Yu-Gi-Oh!'s story. As one of the key pieces in Yugi Muto and Yami Yugi's journeys together, the Millennium Puzzle plays a very important part in Yu-Gi-Oh!'s anime story, and it all began thousands of years ago in Ancient Egypt.

If you're anything like me, a certain segment of your childhood revolved around watching "Yu-Gi-Oh!" The cards were important too, don't get me wrong, but the show is what riveted me -- gluing me to the TV every Saturday morning even with the frequently ridiculous dialogue of the 4Kids dub. If that was your childhood too, then you may be surprised to learn just how many different "Yu-Gi-Oh!" shows and movies have come out since then. The franchise has never let up for a second, making the task of watching everything a tall one, to say the least.

Some anime stand the test of time, being talked about years after they finish their original anime runs. This is especially true of the shows released during the American anime boom of the late 1990s and early 2000s, with many of the shows broadcast on American television in that era remaining highly praised and instantly recognizable. However, Yu-Gi-Oh bucks this trend. Despite airing during the American anime boom period and the card game remaining one of the most popular TCGs ever created, the original Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters anime is painfully overlooked today. But those who return to this classic anime will find that the series still holds up.

There is no doubt that the original protagonist of the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime series, Yugi Muto, was one of the best duelists of his time. His time as King of Games is legendary, with his biggest feats still being remembered fondly by fans of the franchise. Few players can claim to have challenged Yugi and won their encounter.
Yet, when his playing style and deck-building strategies are analyzed from afar, his legendary status begins to be put into question. Although he is undoubtedly one of the best protagonists in the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise, he has many flaws that would cost him his title outside the anime. There is another equally beloved character who could rival Yugi’s prowess if they ever dueled in real life: Jaden Yuki.

The Yu-Gi-Oh! anime franchise is known for its exciting stories and epic monsters. Throughout the original Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters anime, the protagonist and his friends encounter a vast and intriguing cast of supporting and side characters. The show had a bit of everything, from regional champions obsessed with insects to members of ancient organizations trying to bring about the end of the world.

For more than two decades, the Yu-Gi-Oh! Anime franchise has given fans a plethora of amazing shows to enjoy. Each entry in the series has distinguished itself by introducing unique characters, mechanics, and stories. While some topics are indeed shared, they often do not prevent the plot of a new show from shining, which has kept the franchise engaging since the beginning.
Yet, there is a trope that has been utilized by almost every anime, one that could be considered the darkest of them all. Excluding Yu-Gi-Oh! Sevens, a series made primarily for a new younger audience, all the shows in the franchise have included either a horrific tragedy or a genocide as part of their plots. From Duel Monsters to the most recent Go Rush!!, this trend seems to unify the series.

Throughout Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters, many talented duelists were introduced to audiences. Yet, few of them were as powerful and dedicated as Yugis main rival, Seto Kaiba. Yearning to become the best player in the world, Kaiba spent years acquiring a variety of powerful and unique cards, as well as honing his skills as a Duel Monsters player.
By the end of the series, Kaiba had demonstrated time and time again why he was among the few duelists capable of playing against Yugi himself. His success as a player relied on his high intellect and the outstanding monsters, spells, and traps found in his deck. While Kaiba was often forced to play second fiddle to Yugi, many consider his deck and cards stronger than those of the protagonist.

The heir of the gravekeeper family is better known for becoming possessed by his dark side during the exciting and sometimes infuriating final duels of the Battle City Tournament. Yet, his actions during the beginning of season 2 prove that his original personality is severely more dangerous than his evil side.

Several of Yu-Gi-Oh!'s earliest titles, first released on Game Boy in the '90s and early 2000s, are now heading to Nintendo Switch and Steam in a special re-release, 25 years after the initial launch of the trading card game.

The Yu-Gi-Oh! anime series is one of the most beloved franchises, thanks to the entertaining game it created, memorable characters, and the intriguing plot of all its seasons. While the main focus of all shows in the franchise is the card game itself, all seasons had an overarching story that kept viewers invested.
Due to the complex storylines and the understandable focus on the game, some details in the franchise were never given a proper ending or explanation. These unresolved plot lines have become mysteries that Yu-Gi-Oh! fans have wondered about for many decades. This franchise is certainly not lacking in the enigmatic department, from characters miraculously recovering lost items to cards that were never revealed.

Seto Kaiba might not be the protagonist of the beloved Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters series, but he is still one of the most beloved characters in history. Despite his enormous ego and uncaring attitude, he gained the hearts of fans all around the world thanks to his amazing dueling skills, outstanding intellect, and fierce determination.
Yet not many Seto fans know about one of his most impressive feats, as it was only included in a lesser-known manga. The two-shot series known as Transcend Game, served as a prequel to the Dark Sides of Dimensions movie, the fourth in the franchise, in which Kaiba has a short but epic duel against Sera, one of the movies most important characters. This duel is the perfect example of how spectacular Kaibas character can be.

Even the best and most beloved anime have their ups and downs, and Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters is no exception. At its core, the series is about high-schooler Yugi Mutous journey to save the world through epic card game battles and help an ancient spirit rediscover his mysterious past. Though these elements are ever-present throughout the series, not all seasons serve them to the fullest.
Most storylines found throughout Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters 200+ episodes gradually progress the overarching plot while others take it in very different directions. New challenges and characters appear regularly in sometimes questionable but never dull ways. While all five seasons of Yu-Gi-Oh! More than two decades later, Yu-Gi-Oh! remains an anime classic and a staple of many fans childhoods. First airing back in 2000, Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters would go on to introduce the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game, three movies, and several spin-off series into modern culture. Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters was so beloved that YouTuber Little Kuriboh created Yu-Gi-Oh! The Abridged Series, the flagship of the pop culture phenomenon in which fans shorten and re-dub anime for parody.
In both the anime and the trading card game, there are three types of cards: Monster, Magic, now known as Spell, and Trap. Thousands of cards have featured in the many incarnations of Yu-Gi-Oh!, but, much like first generation Pokmon, none stand out quite like those from Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters. Among the countless cards seen in seasons 1-5, a select few outshine the rest.

The original Yu-Gi-Oh! anime and manga series is still beloved by many, with the characters seen there being just as fondly remembered as the monsters on the cards. One of these was a villainous duelist who's now set to receive a new collectible figure.
Acting as one of Yugi Mutou's fiercest rivals, Seto Kaiba was a vengeful and arrogant duelist in the classic Yu-Gi-Oh!: Duel Monsters anime. Now represented by a cute but cunning figure from Good Smile Company, the dark antagonist is decked out with his Duel Disk and trademark jacket. With the card game related to the franchise now turning 25 years old, there's no better time to d-d-d-d-d-d-d-duel -- relatively speaking.

Joey's final duel in Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters was unfair and made Zigfried look better. The plot favored Zigfried to set up his duel against Kaiba. Joey's last duel should have been against Grandpa Solomon, showcasing his growth as a duelist.

Yugi's iconic deck would struggle in competitive play due to outdated strategies and inconsistent card choices. Ancient Egyptian magic won't help Yugi in real-life duels, as his deck lacks the efficiency needed to compete. Yugi could revamp his deck by focusing on Dark Magician support cards for a more competitive edge in modern gameplay.

Yet, when thinking about Yugi’s deck in the real-life card game that was inspired by the series, his strategies, deck building, and choice of cards are far from optimal.

Summoned Skull was a powerhouse in Yu-Gi-Oh! due to its high attack points and low tribute requirement. Despite its strength, Summoned Skull never achieved the same iconic status as Dark Magician in the show. The game evolved, leaving Summoned Skull behind, but he remains a beloved classic in Yu-Gi-Oh! history.
Despite not being among the most famous Yu-Gi-Oh! creatures in Yugi’s deck, Summoned Skull found its place as one of the best monsters in the card game. For many years, this unassuming normal monster (meaning it has no effect), remained one of the most reliable and sought-after cards. It completely eclipsed iconic creatures like the Egyptian God Cards, becoming more prevalent than even Yugi’s signature monster, the Dark Magician.
The card surpassed most others in Yugi’s deck when brought to the real game due to its incredible stats, at 2500 attack points, with only one monster as a sacrifice required for its summon.

When watching dubbed anime, most audiences understandably assume that what the English-speaking actors say are word-for-word translations of the original Japanese scripts and performances. It goes without saying that most anime villains are fated to lose. They embody the kinds of evils that the anime's heroes and viewers should oppose, and their respective worlds would be better off with them vanquished. That being said, some anime villains only really fell because their rival heroes had a uniquely unfair advantage on their side.
Thanks to some questionable power-ups or contrived scenarios, these villains lost even when they could've plausibly won. They would've done much better or even won if they were fortunate enough to be another story's antagonist. That's not to say that another group of heroes couldn't best them, but they'd stand a better chance of winning elsewhere.

Tamashii Nations' new figurine isn't the only recent product that celebrates the late Kazuki Takahashi's work by specifically spotlighting the franchise's monsters. For example, Animate released a special apparel collection earlier this year that includes a variety of T-shirts, stadium jackets and hoodies. The best kinds of anime are those that make fans wish they'd have an infinite number of episodes. Some anime become so popular and successful that they make this wish come true, only for fans to realize that too much of a good thing can be bad. Although these anime aren't terrible, they still outlived their welcome.

Fans of anime and manga know that it's extremely common for manga series to be adapted into anime, more so than original stories being created as anime directly. However, while some adaptations are fantastically faithful to the manga, such as Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, others... aren't. There are many reasons why this might be the case; in some situations, it's because the manga isn't finished being written yet, and the anime ran out of material to adapt. In others, it was never meant to be the exact same, but rather more "inspired" by the manga. In a few cases, it even happens because fans were unhappy with the manga, and the anime was written with those complaints in mind.

The voice star behind some of Pokémon’s best-loved characters has retired from the anime.
James Carter Cathcart has provided multiple voices for the anime since 1998. These include Professor Oak and his grandson Gary and, since 2006, he has also voiced Team Rocket members James and Meowth.
It was reported in January that Cathcart had advanced cancer, which started in his tongue and had spread to his neck. The news was announced by his wife Martha via the website CaringBridge.
In a new post shared on 17 April, Martha, who previously said the cancer was treatable, revealed that the voice actor’s tumour “didn’t respond to the induction chemotherapy”.
Cathcart, 69, will now undertake a more aggressive form of chemo, which will begin in May.
While sharing the update Martha added: “In other news, Jimmy has decided to retire from script adapting and voice dubbing for Pokémon USA, effective at the conclusion...

July has been a nice experience so far for anyone with a streaming service subscription. Nearly every platform has offered exceptional new content to watch, and as usual, Netflix leads the pack with some of the best new movies and shows available.
Subscribers have already been treated to the underrated epic Cloud Atlas, Adam Sandler’s often forgotten I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry and emotional boxing tale Million Dollar Baby, among many, many others. And now, today brings even more new stuff to add to your binge list.
First up, Jason Mantzoukas and Tony Revolori star in the 2018 comedy The Long Dumb Road, and the title alone pretty much covers what this road trip flick is about. Critics praised the duo’s chemistry when the film released, and it currently sits at a fairly decent 74% on Rotten Tomatoes. So, if you’re in the mood for a humorous...
