Nicole Clemens is joining Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios as vice president and head of international originals. Beginning July 7, she’ll report to Kelly Day, vice president of Prime Video International.

Clemens, the former president of Paramount Television Studios, will oversee the international originals regional and production leaders; she’ll work out of Amazon MGM Studios’ Culver City headquarters for a bit before relocating to her new home in Prime Video’s London office. Clemens previously was president of original scripted series for Paramount+.

Prior to Paramount, Clemens was a producer at Anonymous Content. Her résumé also includes top roles at FX Networks (executive vice president and head of series development) and at ICM Partners (partner, head of the Motion Picture Literary Department).

Paramount TV Studios shut down last year amid greater corporate restructuring; Paramount Global is in the process of merging with Skydance.

Clemens, who will start in the role on July 7, will oversee the development and production of original movies and series across more than 20 territories and manage teams across Europe, Latin America, the Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, North Africa, Canada and Australia.

She will onboard and spend a period of time at Amazon MGM Studios’ headquarters in Culver City before relocating to London, per the internal announcement from Prime Video international vice president Kelly Day.

International originals team leaders Javiera Balmaceda, Tara Erer, Nicole Morganti and John Holmes (Director of International Originals Production & Post) will report directly to Clemens.

Nikhil Madhok, who leads international originals in India, will continue to report to Gaurav Gandhi, Prime video’s vice president of the Apac and Mena regions, while remaining part of Clemens’ leadership team.

Clemens joins Prime Video from Paramount Television Studios, where she most recently served as president. In that capacity, she oversaw the development and production of several high-profile series that have found homes on Prime Video, including “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan,” “Reacher,” and “Cross.” Her tenure at Paramount also included a dual role as president of original scripted series for Paramount+, where she helped formulate the programming strategy for the streamer’s launch.

Exclusive: Kelly Day has landed an expanded international role at Prime Video following the exit of Jennifer Salke last week.

Deadline has seen an internal note sent from Prime Video boss Mike Hopkins in the past hour that confirms the well-liked Day will take on Amazon’s international originals, in addition to her current duties as VP of Prime Video International.

Previously, all originals ultimately sat under Salke, who left last week after seven years amid talk Amazon had moved in a different direction with the new-look James Bond on the horizon. In an unprecedented move, Disney+ Latin America and Colombia’s Caracol TV aired and streamed a series simultaneously, shattering distribution windows that typically start with a free-to-air (Fta) broadcast – if an Fta network is producing – then followed by streaming on a platform.

With “Peter the Great: Greater Than Ever” (“Pedro el escamoso: más escamoso que nunca”), the sequel to Caracol TV’s hit series “Pedro el escamoso,” the sitcom became Caracol TV’s most successful series in recent years with a grand finale that reached a 47.1% share and a 9.3 rating, surpassing its direct competitor, “Yo Soy Betty La Fea,” which reported a 25.1% share and a 5.0 rating.

The Caracol TV and Disney+ co-production dominated prime time during its 23 x 60’ episodes, reaching an average rating of 9.3 and a 44.2% share. More than 6.5 million Colombians, on average per episode, were transfixed with the story, according to Caracol.

Alonso Aguilar, head of Mexico Originals at Amazon Studios and showrunner/director Jorge Michel Grau regaled participants of the Madrid confab Iberseries & Platino Industria with a first look at the trailer of Prime Video Latin America’s most expensive production to date, “Every Minute Counts” (“Cada Minuto Cuenta”).

The new original series, that turns on the devastating earthquake that hit Mexico City on Sept. 19, 1985 made use of the Unreal Engine virtual screen technology first used by Disney’s “The Mandalorian,” unprecedented for Mexico, or Latin America for that matter.

“The technology has been used in smaller productions in Latin America but not at this scale,” Aguilar told Variety, who added that they have two ongoing projects, a movie and series, currently in production, that are also tapping into the 3D virtual technology that was originally developed by Ilm and Epic Games.

Barbie star America Ferrera is no stranger to big franchises. Before appearing in Greta Gerwig’s ode to womanhood and in NBC’s beloved sitcom Superstore, Ferrera got her start on a very relatable ABC primetime soap Ugly Betty.

First premiering in 2006, Ugly Betty ran for four season on network television and built up a devoted fanbase. Bright and early at 9:30 a.m. over at Paramount Studios in Hollywood, there was an Ugly Betty reunion with stars Ana Ortiz and Chris Gorham joining writers Brian Tannen, Gabrielle Stanton, Sheila Lawrence, Chris Black, Henry Myers, Cameron Litvack and Tracy Poust on the special picket.

Ugly Betty, based on the hit Spanish-language novela Betty La Fea, aired for four seasons from 2006 to 2010. America Ferrera portrayed the titular Betty Suarez, an unconventional beauty whose unique sense of style doesn’t preclude her from landing a gig at a top fashion magazine. Arcane and Korean supernatural series Hellbound have jumped to the top of Netflix’s new weekly top ten television list.

The animated series, which is based on the League of Legends videogame, was watched by Netflix subscribers for 38.4M hours between November 15 and 21. But it was outgunned by Netflix’s latest Korean thriller, Hellbound, which was watched a total of 43.5M hours in the same period.

Hellbound, which stars Yoo Ah-in and Kim Hyun-Joo, is about a group of supernatural angels appearing out of nowhere to condemn people to hell.

Hit drama “Ugly Betty” is coming to South Africa, and will feature the show’s first Black lead.

Pre-production begins next month, and principal photography will start in January, on “uBettina Wethu,” the South African remake of “Yo soy Betty, la fea,” the megahit Colombian telenovela that inspired the America Ferrera-fronted ABC series “Ugly Betty.”

Borrowing on the tender, comic tone of the hit Colombian telenovela, which has been successfully adapted in 19 territories worldwide, “uBettina Wethu” will mark the first remake featuring a ‘Betty’ who is Black. The first season of the show is a co-production with South African public broadcaster Sabc and will debut in April 2021.

Produced by Known Associates Entertainment (Kae) and Moonlighting Films, the series is the first project of a slate of feature film and television projects to emerge from a newly launched venture between the two companies.

ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke kicked off her executive session at the Television Critics Association press tour with a statement of remembrance for “Ugly Betty” creator Silvio Horta on Wednesday.

Describing Horta “unbelievably talented,” Burke called Horta a beloved member of the ABC family. “Our thoughts are with his friends and family today,” she said.

Horta, who created the America Ferrera-led dramedy “Ugly Betty” for ABC in 2006, was found dead of an apparent suicide in a Miami motel room on Tuesday.

Horta’s family confirmed news of his death in a statement, saying, “Through his friendships, his love and his work in TV and films, Silvio touched the lives of millions. Silvio had an ongoing struggle with addiction and depression, but through it all, he always found a way to turn his struggle into laughter. He was a kind and beautiful man. He may be gone but his light will shine on.

Silvio Horta, who created the hit ABC dramedy Ugly Betty, has died.

Variety is reporting that the 45-year-old was found dead in a Miami hotel room in an apparent suicide.

Sources told the outlet that Horta died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Horta is best known for adapting “Yo soy Betty, la fea,” for American audiences.

The series, known as Ugly Betty, was a roaring success for ABC, propelling America Ferrera to stardom.

Ferrera garnered an Emmy for her role on the series, with the series as a whole winning 42 awards throughout its run.

The series even scooped a Golden Globe for Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy in 2007, with Horta taking to the stage to accept the award.

It focused on a young woman who landed a job at a glossy fashion magazine, despite not being fashionable.

The supporting cast included Vanessa Williams, Becki Newton, Michael Urie, and Rebecca Romijn.
