An Ugly Betty revival could be in the works, but certain conditions have to be met, at least for one of its stars, Ana Ortiz. Inspired by the Colombian telenovela Yo soy Betty, la fea, Ugly Betty ran successfully on ABC for four seasons, before ending in 2010. The comedy-drama series was a star-making vehicle for America Ferrera, who played the titular character, Betty Suarez, and won an Emmy for her performance in Season 1. The series follows Betty, a socially awkward and unfashionable Mexican American woman who lands a job at a New York high-fashion brand, Mode, and has to navigate this new world despite her naivety. Despite wrapping a decade and a half ago, its appeal remains strong with talks of a revival gaining steam after its recent debut on Netflix.

In an unprecedented move, Disney+ Latin America and Colombia’s Caracol TV aired and streamed a series simultaneously, shattering distribution windows that typically start with a free-to-air (Fta) broadcast – if an Fta network is producing – then followed by streaming on a platform.
With “Peter the Great: Greater Than Ever” (“Pedro el escamoso: más escamoso que nunca”), the sequel to Caracol TV’s hit series “Pedro el escamoso,” the sitcom became Caracol TV’s most successful series in recent years with a grand finale that reached a 47.1% share and a 9.3 rating, surpassing its direct competitor, “Yo Soy Betty La Fea,” which reported a 25.1% share and a 5.0 rating.

Update: Amazon now says Season 2 of “The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power” has reached 55 million global viewers since its launch 34 days ago on Aug. 29.
That’s an increase of only 15 million viewers since the total of 40 million that the company reported 11 days after launch. By all accounts, Season 2 viewership has been slower than that of Season 1, which Amazon said hit 25 million viewers in one day when it premiered in 2022. The season recently made its debut on the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 with one billion minutes watched — a drop from the 1.3 billion minutes that Season 1 debuted with, especially when considering that the more recent total combines viewership of both seasons, and that Season 2’s first episodes had a longer runtime than Season 1’s.

Based on the Colombian telenovela "Yo soy Betty, la fea," the ABC sitcom "Ugly Betty" ran for four seasons from 2006 to 2010 and helped make lead actress America Ferrera into a major star. So why did it get canceled so quickly? Will there ever be a reunion? Oh, and also — what was "Ugly Betty" about, besides a girl named Betty who isn't as "pretty" as other women?
The show stars America Ferrera as the titular Betty Suarez, who, despite her braces and admittedly strange fashion sense, lands a job at Mode Magazine in Manhattan as an assistant to notorious womanizer Daniel Meade (Eric Mabius). Along the way, Betty ends up making some unlikely friends and allies, including Daniel himself — the two have a genuinely wholesome friendship, actually — but also has to face off against the imperious creative director of Mode, Wilhelmina Slater (Vanessa Williams), as...

Season 2 of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is a hit, at least according to Amazon. The season was viewed by 40 million people in its first 11 days, per internal metrics provided by Prime Video.
The season is currently one of the Top 5 most-watched Prime Video seasons. The streamer also revealed that an “impressive amount” of the audience for “The Rings of Power” has come from outside of the U.S. and that the series reached the No. 1 spot globally on Prime Video in its first 11 days. Season 1 has also seen a boost with “tens of millions” of viewers tuning into the first season. Because Prime Video — like Apple TV+, Hulu, Peacock, Paramount+ and basically every streamer at this point that isn’t Netflix — is notoriously secretive with its viewership stats, it’s difficult to know exactly how well Season 2 is performing compared to other Prime Video originals.

Reboots are a dime a dozen in Hollywood. But with the smashing success of Prime Video’s “Betty La Fea: The Story Continues,” better known in the U.S. by its English version “Ugly Betty,” Amazon found untapped enthusiasm for beloved Latin American IP over 20 years after it first aired, underlining the benefit of international expansion in the midst of the streaming wars.
Created by Fernando Gaitán for the Colombian network Rcn, “Yo soy Betty, la fea” followed the adventures of Beatriz Pinzón Solano (Ana María Orozco), a secretary with braces, bad bangs and an even worse wardrobe, who falls in love with her playboy boss Armando Mendoza (Jorge Enrique Abello). The show followed Betty’s transformation from an eager assistant helping her supervisor hide financial wrongdoing, into a confident and beautiful executive who takes over as president of the clothing manufacturing company where she works — while her playboy reformed into a doting husband.

When "Yo Soy Betty, La Fea" aired its first and only season in 1999, no one could have imagined the impact a Colombian telenovela that followed Betty Pinzón, a quirky, corporate Latina protagonist navigating her career and love life, would have on millions of people around the world. The show was televised in 180 countries, dubbed in 15 languages, and remade into 28 international adaptations - with one of the most prominent remakes starring America Ferrera as "Ugly Betty."
In "Betty La Fea" - and every rendition thereafter - Betty's long, frizzy dark hair, oversized glasses, mouth full of braces, and bushy eyebrows elicited unwarranted disgust and ire from most of her coworkers. Her looks were the throughline of every episode, which was fitting, given that the Spanish title translates to "I Am Betty, the Ugly One." Ugly Betty, created by Fernando Gaitán and Silvio Horta, is a comedic drama based off a telenovela called, "Yo soy Betty, la fea.". The show starred America Ferrerra as Betty Suarez, an intelligent young woman who gets a job at a major fashion magazine, known as Mode. Early on after its premiere, Ugly Betty was praised for having a diverse cast and centering on the story of a Mexican woman pursuing her dreams, which wasn't common for TV shows at the time. The series ran on ABC for four seasons before it was abruptly canceled due to a decline in viewership. Despite its cancelation, the show has continued to be referenced in pop culture and gained a cult following long after it aired. Ugly Betty remains a bingeable and popular watch among fans who love to revisit the show's energetic characters and melodramatic plot reminiscent of telenovelas.

Barbie star America Ferrera is no stranger to big franchises. Before appearing in Greta Gerwig’s ode to womanhood and in NBC’s beloved sitcom Superstore, Ferrera got her start on a very relatable ABC primetime soap Ugly Betty.
First premiering in 2006, Ugly Betty ran for four season on network television and built up a devoted fanbase. The series, which is now streaming on Netflix, starred Ferrera as the titular “Ugly” Betty Suarez, a braces-wearing 22-year-old fashion neophyte from Queens. The show follows the awkward Betty as she lands a job at high fashion magazine Mode in Manhattan wear she works as a personal assistant under failson editor-in-chief Daniel Meade (Eric Mabius).

America Ferrera has recently joined Barbieland as Gloria, a Mattel employee that helps Margot Robbie’s Barbie when entering the real world. Ferrera is a household name on both the small and big screens, with her more recent TV roles — Amy Sosa in Superstore and Elishia Kennedy in WeCrashed — being lauded by the audience. Nevertheless, her first starring role remains the highlight of her TV career — the titular Betty Suarez in 2006’s Ugly Betty, an American adaptation of the Colombian telenovela Yo Soy Betty La Fea.

For fictional characters to be believable, they need to behave like real people, and so, from time to time, they can be seen watching TV. While real shows typically get inserted into these fascinating worlds from time to time, showrunners have a preference for creating fake shows with unique plots.
Such shows exist to add more layers to the background activities and to make viewers laugh, but at times, they propel the plot forward or communicate specific messages to the fans. They also range from parodies of real small-screen projects to unique creations that span different genres.

ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke kicked off her executive session at the Television Critics Association press tour with a statement of remembrance for “Ugly Betty” creator Silvio Horta on Wednesday.
Describing Horta “unbelievably talented,” Burke called Horta a beloved member of the ABC family. “Our thoughts are with his friends and family today,” she said.
Horta, who created the America Ferrera-led dramedy “Ugly Betty” for ABC in 2006, was found dead of an apparent suicide in a Miami motel room on Tuesday.
Horta’s family confirmed news of his death in a statement, saying, “Through his friendships, his love and his work in TV and films, Silvio touched the lives of millions. Silvio had an ongoing struggle with addiction and depression, but through it all, he always found a way to turn his struggle into laughter. He was a kind and beautiful man. He may be gone but his light will shine on.

Updated with cause of death: Silvio Horta, who created the ABC comedy Ugly Betty and shared its 2007 Emmy nom for Outstanding Comedy Series, was found dead Tuesday at a hotel in his native Miami, and today the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner ruled that Horta died by suicide. He was 45.
Horta created the U.S. version of Ugly Betty, which starred America Ferrera and aired more than 80 episodes over four seasons from 2006-10. Ferrera won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for playing Betty Suarez, a smart, sweet-natured and wholesome Mexican-American from Queens who lands a job at a trendy fashion magazine in Manhattan. Betty embraced her unique appearance — including bangs, heavy-rimmed glasses and train-track braces — and independent attitude in the cutthroat world of New York fashion.
Eric Mabius, Tony Plana, Ana Ortiz, Becki Newton, Michael Urie, Mark Indelicato and Vanessa Williams also were series regulars for the show’s entire run.
