The original G.I. Joe toyline was conceived in 1963 by designer Stanley Weston and was meant to serve as a more "masculine" counterpart to the female dolls designed for girls. Indeed, the word "doll" was used by marketers to describe babies or dress-up miniature women, not soldiers or men of action. Hasbro came up with the term "action figure" to refer to its G.I. Joes, and the term stuck. For several generations, children's toys were heavily gendered along those lines, with "girl" toys encouraging motherhood, domesticity, and fashion, while "boy" toys encouraged combat and violence.
By 1982, the G.I. Joe brand had become moribund and was in need of a sprucing up. A new line of toys was launched under the new name G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero. These figures were only 3.75 inches high (the older ones were 12 inches) and were composed of 11 cartoony characters. They were American soldiers ... kind of.

Cell is by far one of the most iconic villains of the Dragon Ball franchise, as well as anime in general. A large part of his popularity comes from his charming yet intimidating personality, his flare for the dramatics, and his unmistakable voice. All these traits were first communicated to Western fans in the Ocean dub by the talented voice actor Dale Wilson, one of the most beloved in the industry.
On January 6, 2025, Wilson passed away after an arduous battle against prostate cancer and Parkinson’s disease. His wife, Gail Wilson, was the one who announced via Facebook, letting his fans know about this tragic loss.

Canadian voice actor Dale Wilson, well-known for his various roles in Dragon Ball Z and numerous other anime dubs, has died at age 74.
The news was announced by Wilson's wife, Gail Wilson, in a recent social media post, which reads, "It is with an aching heart that I must tell you. Last evening Dale moved on from this Earthly existence. Having lived with metastasized prostate cancer and Parkinson's disease for many years, he was ready. He was my heart, my soul, my North Star. In the words of Bonnie Raitt, 'He taught me how to live….how to be myself……and how to give.' I know he has for many of you as well. And I know he treasured each one of you; his relatives, friends and fans."

The Energon Universe has been a massive success, and the recent G.I. Joe relaunch continues that trend by being the best-selling single issue released by Image Comics for the month of November. Skybound’s shared Transformers / G.I. Joe universe took the comic industry by storm with the release of 2023's Void Rivals #1 by Robert Kirkman and Lorenzo De Felici, and the imprint shows no signs of stopping as it continues into its second year.
According to Image Comics, the publisher’s top-selling book for the month of November was G.I. Joe #1 by Joshua Williamson, Tom Reilly, Jordie Bellaire, and Rus Wooton, the relaunch of the forty-year-old property.
G.I. Joe #1 was easily one of the biggest launches of the year, but Skybound’s entire line of Energon Universe titles takes the top three spots for Image’s entire catalog for the month of November, as the #2 and #3 spots...

"Transformers" does not have a singular creator — that's what happens when a story begins for commercial reasons, not artistic ones. During the 1980s, toy giant Hasbro imported several Japanese action figures of transforming robots. The Reagan administration had also loosened regulations on advertising in children's entertainment, so now Hasbro just needed a story to sell these "Transformers."
That call was answered by Marvel Comics, who Hasbro had already partnered with Marvel to develop their "G.I. Joe" series. In 1981, writer Larry Hama was pitching a new Nick Fury series. Then in came Hasbro, who wanted creative input for their planned action figure line "G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero." Marvel's Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter first suggested the idea of G.I. Joe as a anti-terrorism team, and proposed that Hama fold his ideas for Nick Fury into "G.I. Joe." Cue an ongoing "Joe" comic written by Hama, published by Marvel hitting stands in 1982.

Since 2007, the Transformers franchise has been a major success at the box office, even if most of the movies weren't exactly successful with critics. On the other hand, fellow Hasbro franchise G.I. Joe largely failed to make a similar cinematic mark, be it critically or financially. Now, the two properties are set to join forces on the big screen, and there's plenty of comic book source material to pull from to make it work.
The G.I. Joe and Transformers franchises have crossed over in the comic book medium. Likewise, they have individual stories that could also be used to influence the movie team-up. By using these elements as a base, the Transformers/G.I. Joe movie might be a success.

Morgan Lofting, best known for voicing the villainous Baroness in animated G.I. Joe movies and TV shows, has died at age 84. Lofting’s agents said she died unexpectedly on Wednesday, November 27, at her home in Burbank, California, per The Hollywood Reporter. “As one of the 10 founding actors at our agency, she meant the world to us and our company,” the agents, CelebWorx’s Nery Lemus and Christopher Arsaga, added. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on February 2, 1940, Lofting marked her first voice acting role playing Princess Invidia on Star Blazers, a syndicated American adaptation of a Japanese anime series, from 1979 to 1984. Warning! This post contains Spoilers for Scarlett #5While Image and Skybound's new Energon Universe has been fascinating and engaging, I'm still waiting for Snake Eyes. Bringing the Transformers and G.I. Joe franchises together alongside brand-new characters and all-new storylines, I have loved how the often separate lores and continuities have been merged in fresh and creative new ways. That said, I'm baffled by the absence of Snake Eyes who's indisputably one of the most popular Joes of all time.
Having first begun with Robert Kirkman and Lorenzo De Felici's Void Rivals in June 2023, the Energon Universe also features Skybound's Transformers by Daniel Warren Johnson and multiple G.I. Joe miniseries including Duke, Cobra Commander, Destro, and Scarlett. Additionally, G.I. Joe #1 will begin in November for Joshua Williamson and Tom Reilly. Per TMZ, law enforcement officials discovered Renaday at his Burbank, California home while carrying out a welfare check on Sunday. He was found deceased when police arrived, and it's believed that his death was from natural causes. Renaday's niece, Mindy Zachary, said that her uncle's air conditioning had been out recently, and temperatures inside his home had reached the 90s. It's unclear if the heat directly contributed to Renaday's death, but the family reportedly doesn't feel that any further investigation is necessary.

Many of the recurring faces on "The Simpsons" have the same voice: Harry Shearer. Alongside Hank Azaria, Shearer does more than double duty in playing the series' supporting cast. As a testament to his range, his roles run the gamut from nice guy Ned Flanders to milquetoast Principal Skinner (don't say Armin Tamzarian) to evil Mr. Charles Montgomery Burns, owner of the Springfield Nuclear Plant and Homer Simpson's boss.
Shearer is the definitive voice of Mr. Burns (he's been doing it for 30+ seasons), but he wasn't the first actor to voice the character. That would be the late Christopher Collins, who was briefly part of the "Simpsons" cast during its first season, which aired from 1989 to 1990. Collins voiced Burns in the following episodes: "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire," "Homer's Odyssey," "There's No Disgrace Like Home," and "The Telltale Head."
Shearer took over in the season 1 episode "Homer's Night Out.

Instead of a Transformers crossover, G.I. Joe needs a TV series. A G.I. Joe TV series will allow the franchise’s iconic characters to be properly fleshed out for a new generation. G.I. Joe's previous crossovers with Transformers were never vital to either franchise.
The G.I. Joe franchise is decades old, but it's still mostly defined by the 1980s series: G.I Joe: A Real American Hero. The series oozed the sentiments of the era and the toyline was translated into a successful line of comic books and a cartoon. A voice actor since the 1970s, Cullen is best-known as the voice of Autobot leader Optimus Prime. He first portrayed the iconic character in the 1984 animated series The Transformers, with his portrayal of Prime becoming a father figure to a generation of viewers. It looks like Amazon MGM Studios has He-Man’s power sword as the studio is in early talks to produce a live-action “Masters of the Universe” film, according to a insider with knowledge of the project.
Netflix put the property into turnaround after investing $30 million in its development. The project has been bouncing around Hollywood from Mattel and producer Todd Black for over 15 years, with Warner Bros. and Sony, as well as filmmakers like Jon M. Chu and McG temporarily involved.

A new collectible figure based on the Cobra Mothership from G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero has been revealed at this year's edition of New York Comic-Con, celebrating forty years since the premiere of the animated series that defined a generation. Every respectable action villain needs to have a base of operations that can be intimidating and dangerous for the heroes that approach it, and Cobra's Mothership fulfills every requirement. Shaped like the snake the evil organization represents, the vehicle is menacing enough to make it a formidable transport for the main villain of the story, and the new collectible from Super 7 could be an impressive addition to any collection.

In celebration of Skybound Entertainment acquiring the G.I. Joe license, the publisher will be re-releasing the first issue of the classic '80s series. This time, however, that historic issue will be published with Larry Hama’s original, unedited dialogue for the very first time. Skybound surprised the comics world earlier this summer when it announced that it had acquired the Hasbro properties Transformers and G.I. Joe, which will be relaunched in an all-new shared continuity dubbed the Energon Universe. In addition, Skybound will also be picking up the baton from previous publisher Idw for Larry Hama’s G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero continuation of the classic Marvel series, which ended on a cliffhanger with the 300th issue last year.
If that wasn't enough, Skybound will be re-issuing a special edition of the very first issue from 1982, presenting a version of the classic comic that fans have never seen before.

The godfather of all things G.I. Joe, Larry Hama was instrumental in developing Hasbro’s fledging action figure line. In addition to writing the file cards for the figures, Hama also wrote the Marvel Comics tie-in book from 1982 to 1994. This article contains spoilers for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
When we first meet Noah Diaz (Anthony Ramos), he’s a tech genius struggling to find a job and a purpose. By the end of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, he’s found a purpose by playing an important role in helping the Autobots and Maximals stop the Terrorcons from bringing the planet-destroying Unicron to Earth. But he still doesn’t have a job. That is until he’s approached by a man who knows what Noah has done for the planet and wants to recruit him. The name on the man’s business card? G.I. Joe.
By this point, shared universe teases such as these have become commonplace in blockbuster films, often pointing to larger franchises that nobody really wants (R.I.P. Dark Universe). But the G.I. Joe reveal in the latest Transformers might have a...

In addition to over 500 figures and 200 vehicles, GI Joe has inspired adaptations in other media, such as cartoons and films. GI Joe: A Real American Hero also has a long and storied history in comics; during the line’s heyday, Marvel Comics published a highly popular GI Joe: A Real American Hero title, written by Larry Hama.

GI Joe began as a series of twelve-inch Hasbro action figures for boys representing the U.S. military in 1964 and went on to become a smash hit that's spanned nearly six decades. Rebranding in the early 1980s as G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero saw the introduction of 3.75-inch action figures and military vehicles (in competition with Star Wars) and an exciting storyline that pitted the U.S. military against the terrorist organization known as Cobra. Inspiring a hit Saturday morning cartoon series, a twelve-year Marvel Comic book run and three live-action movies over the years, the Real American Hero and his brothers-in-arms made an impact on pop culture that won't soon be forgotten.
In 2009, the first live-action G.I. Joe movie, The Rise of Cobra, hit theaters, earning more than $302 million at the box office worldwide, and while that encouraged Paramount Pictures to produce two more films for the franchise...
